The Kinks' concept album Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround Part One was released on the 27th of November, 1970. The LP featured two hit singles: the titular track, Lola (a top 10 song in the UK and the US) and Apeman (which made it to No. 5 in the UK). The single Lola marked the start of the band's second wave of success in the USA, after having been banned from there for four years (1965-9). Your hosts Adam (Kinks expert) and Liam (Kinks beginner) go through each track of the album, and ask themselves how the songs complement the concept of the concept album.

With the 2025 tour up and running, we're heading to our next destination - the home of the Braves in Atlanta, Georgia that hasn't seen a Pearl Jam show in nearly 13 years. This episode will cover the last time that they played in the Phillips (now State Farm) Arena back in 2000 that they will be returning to this week. We'll talk a little bit about the history of Atlanta shows that of course will mostly include one of the greatest Pearl Jam shows of all time in 1994. This show was given the distinction of being an Ape/Man show, which means it was one of a few handpicked shows that the band recommended that fans give a chance to when the official bootlegs were all released in stores. A lot of our conversations will be us trying to determine if they made the right decision selecting this show. There are definitely performances that stand out. For Crazy Mary, it was the first time that they ever passed a bottle of wine around during the jam. It's also the first appearance of the Romanza intro for Better Man that got played for the majority of 2000. We'll also dig deep on Binaural era tracks Nothing As It Seems, Breakerfall and Rival that we almost never get to talk about. Find out if we think that this one was worthy of the Ape/Man tag. Also to note, this episode was recorded prior to the start of the tour, so if you're looking for in depth analysis, head on over to our Patreon to check out the instant reaction episodes for both Hollywood, Florida shows! Two books set in Hollywood show different sides of the film business, from industry-shaping success to the personal frustration of rejection. First, Louis B. Mayer & Irving Thalberg: The Whole Equation is a history of the duo behind MGM Film. The nonfiction book by Kenneth Turan, a regular critic for the Los Angeles Times and NPR, follows the unlikely trajectory that led both men to the movies. In today's episode, Turan joins NPR's Scott Simon for a conversation that touches on early MGM films like Ben-Hur and Tarzan the Ape Man, antisemitism in Hollywood, and Mayer's complicated relationship with Judy Garland. Then, Simon speaks with British actor Rupert Everett, who's out with a new collection of short stories inspired by Hollywood rejection. The American No draws from film concepts and screenplays the actor pitched but never got the chance to make. In today's episode, he and Simon discuss Everett's autobiographical writing, his upbringing in a military family, and his early exposure to Julie Andrews. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

This our first of many episodes this year celebrating 25 years of Pearl Jam's excellent Binaural tour from 2000. This was the first tour year that the band produced bootlegs of every show that could be easily attainable at any big box or local record store. You may have seen on some of these CD's a little icon that features a silhouette of an ape and a human. These shows were a part of the Ape/Man collection, which were specific shows that the band selected as stand outs from this tour. Tampa is an Ape/Man show, and they were absolutely right to use the moniker for it. This was the seventh show on a bit of a tumultuous first leg run in North America. Taking place shortly after the Roskilde tragedy, a few of the early shows had some unease and tension on stage, but for this night they were able to compartmentalize what happened to put on a phenomenal shows with boundless amounts of energy. Eight Binaural songs are played at this show, including a handful that are incredibly rare to hear today such as God's Dice, Evacuation and Sleight Of Hand. We'll talk about how this era sounded sonically where the band, specifically Mike, put heavy emphasis on utilizing pedalboards more than any tour year to that point. You'll hear a lot of that come through in songs like Nothing As It Seems, the Daughter jam and Rearviewmirror. This is a great show that should be on everyone's list to listen to, and we hope to guide you in that direction! Also in this episode we'll talk about the Last Exit mishap, hydraulic machines and one of the strangest things that Ed's ever uttered at a Pearl Jam show, which will bring up a semi-obscure reference to a King Of The Hill episode. Haven't we all wanted to just get away from the complexities of modern life? Escape the city, quit our jobs, and hit the hammock on some island in the South Pacific? This has been a predominant theme of Ray Davies' lyrical output. Life today is too stressful; the past was more orderly and harmonious. In this song Ray goes WAY BACK to an imagined eden, a primordial jungle, when there are no jobs, obligations, or need for financial security. Perhaps Ray's tunes were initially instigated by a compelling feeling of angst, frustration, and resentment, but, consummate artist that he is, he transformed those cringey feelings into ironic, joyous fuck yous for our vicarious pleasure. Well, maybe it's not so simple; maybe we can't afford the time lost or the hefty cost of such a longed-for retirement. But, we can, at least, slip away for a few moments of psychic refreshment with our pals, The Kinks.

Hello Interactors,My daughter has developed a keen interest in synthesizers. She has even created illustrated characters named Morg and Snorf, inspired by keyboard brands like Korg and Nord. Recently, she borrowed an old Korg synthesizer and has begun composing her own music during what she calls, “Korg time”. The evolution of electronic music has been remarkable since its inception, with even classical composers now embracing technology in their work. Notably, Ada Lovelace, one of the earliest computer programmers, foresaw in 1842 that computers would eventually be used for music composition — a prediction that has come to fruition. The blending of acoustic music and computer-generated sounds prompts me to reflect on how we shape our environment, which in turn shapes us. This interplay mirrors the story of evolution: nature nurturing nature ad infinitum. However, I wonder if technology as we know it today will ever truly integrate into the fabric of nature. Will we see human-like robots or robot-like humans? What if technology is already embedded within nature, and we are on the brink of learning to program it just as we would a computer?Let's find out…MAN OR MACHINE?“Are we not men?” This was a question presumably posed to and by members of the band DEVO who masquerade as part human and part machine. The answer by the humorous humanoids was “We are Devo!”. This question and answer became the title of their first album in August of 1978. It served as both a declaration of their band name, DEVO, but also as a rhetorical question that questioned humanity during the early rise of digital technology and its perceived, and actualized, dehumanization.DEVO is an abbreviation of the term de-evolution. The band's founding member, lead singer, and keyboardist, Mark Mothersbaugh had come across a 1924 pamphlet produced by Rev. B.H. Shadduck titled “Jocko-Homo Heavenbound” which critiqued, often humorously, Darwinian evolutionary theory.“Jocko-Homo” translates to Ape-Man which refers to human's evolution from apes. The critique is born out of teleology — the belief organisms are the design of a Christian god…and may be subject to evolutionary decay. Some claimed that by not adhering to the moral precepts of strict forms of Christianity, like dancing or drinking alcohol, that you could pass along devolving genes to your children. As a society, it could lead to a backwards slide of humanity, a devolution. As art students at Kent State, Mothersbaugh and co-founding member and friend Gerry Casale were mostly drawn to the satire and comedic illustrations in ‘Jocko-Homo'. But the book's premise came to the fore when they witnessed the killing of student war protesters in 1973. It made them wonder if perhaps humans really were devolving. After all, the Ohio National Guard had acted more like killing machines, not thinking or feeling humans. They seemingly failed to ask themselves, “Are we not men?”Mothersbaugh and Casale had already begun experimenting with guitar laden punk rock when Mothersbaugh saw Brian Eno perform a synthesizer solo with the band Roxy Music. He'd heard plenty of synth solos from other bands of the 1960s and 70s, but no one played it like Eno — bending and twisting electronic knobs and dials like guitarists and singers bend strings and larynx muscles. Eno sounded and dressed like he'd been transported from the future or another planet.Just a few years later, Brian Eno became the producer for DEVO's first album, “Q: Are we not men? A: We are Devo!”. The album included the song “Jock-Homo” which featured short bursts of monkey sounds Eno synchronized with the machine-like beat of the song. Much like acts of the time, like Roxy Music and David Bowie, DEVO leveraged stage theatrics to convey their message. Their performances featured matching futuristic outfits, often with their red signature energy dome hats. Their choreographed robotic movements reinforced a cyborg-like identity serving as a visual critique of modern society's mechanization. As AI and robots of today have captured the attention of a global society seemingly in decay, it may sound cliché to say, but they, and their contemporaries, were ahead of their time. While I don't believe we are devolving, I do think DEVO accurately portrays, both theoretically and practically, a blending of man and machine that may just be part of developmental evolution — though perhaps not exactly as Darwin had envisioned. Interestingly, DEVO could not have known their band name would become part of a branch of evolutionary biology, called Evo-Devo, or evolutionary developmental biology. That abbreviated term emerged in the early 1980s, perhaps inspired by DEVO.GEOGRAPHY GUIDES GROWTHEvo-Devo, which evolved from 19th-century embryology, explores how the development of an organism grows and matures from a single cell into a fully formed adult. It considers how cell division, their differentiated specialization for specific functions, the development of the resultant organism's shape, and body structures and organs shape evolution.Early thinkers like Karl Ernst von Baer and Ernst Haeckel recognized how species shared similar early developmental stages but then differentiated at later stages. The genetic underpinnings of this wouldn't be fully understood until much later. Darwin recognized these genetic developments as potential drivers of evolutionary change, but it took the Modern Synthesis of the 1930s — which focused on genetics and natural selection — to realize these ideas.By the 1970s, the discovery of mutation genes like Hox genes (which control the body plan of animals) reignited interest in the connection between development and evolution. This research demonstrated how small tweaks in developmental processes could lead to dramatic changes in form. In the 1990s, Evo-Devo solidified as a field, with researchers like Sean B. Carroll emphasizing gene regulation's critical role in shaping life's diversity.Today, Evo-Devo has expanded, embracing genomics and epigenetics to explain how organisms evolve through the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors, reflecting a broader and more dynamic vision of evolution. In a sense, DEVO's fusion of human and machine echoes these evolutionary dynamics, where both biological and technological systems evolve through reconfiguration and integration, creating emergent complexity that Darwin could not have imagined. While Darwin spent years observing the interplay between biology and the physical environments of the Galápagos and beyond, he also could not have fully anticipated the extent to which physical forces directly influence biological development and shape natural selection.Physical forces play a crucial role in shaping the development of complex biological structures. Mechanical stress, for instance, influences how cells behave during growth and regeneration. Cells respond to tension and pressure in their environment through mechanotransduction — where physical signals are converted into biochemical ones — allowing tissues to adapt to their surroundings. This process is essential, for example, for the simple healing of a small cut to the complex formation of organs where precise force patterns ensure proper development. Similarly, physical stressors like fluid dynamics and gravity are critical in determining the structural features of organisms. In mollusks, for example, the formation of their shells is heavily influenced by the mechanical forces exerted by water currents and the mollusk's own movements. These physical inputs guide how calcium carbonate is deposited, shaping the unique curvature and strength of their shells. These examples highlight how environmental forces and biological development are deeply intertwined, driving evolutionary change through the interaction of physical and genetic processes. This view aligns with the work of researchers like Michael Levin, who propose that environmental cues, including bioelectric and biochemical signals, play a crucial role in guiding the development and behavior of organisms. Michael Levin is a pioneering figure in the field of developmental biology and regenerative medicine, where his groundbreaking work explores how organisms use bioelectric signals to guide growth, regeneration, and even behavior. His research has expanded our understanding of how cells communicate beyond traditional biochemical and genetic pathways, showing that electrical signals between cells play a critical role in shaping an organism's development. Levin, and his collaborators, has demonstrated how manipulating these bioelectric signals with computer programs, they can reprogram biological processes — enabling, for example, the regeneration of complex structures like limbs in animals. This represents a major shift in biology, as it challenges the conventional view that genetic blueprints alone dictate development, highlighting instead the role of bioelectricity as an under appreciated but vital component of life's regulatory networks. In other words, genes can be thought of as hardware and they communicate, collaborate, and compete through bioelectronic circuitry, or software.BLURRING BOUNDARIES, REDEFINING LIFEMichael Levin's research, and others, emphasize that biological systems — whether single cells or complex organisms — operate through networks of bioelectrical, biochemical, and biomechanical signals, processing information much like computers. Cells communicate and make decisions through these signals, allowing them to respond to their environments. In this way, living organisms already function as computational entities, capable of performing sophisticated tasks typically associated with artificial systems.Levin's vision extends into synthetic biology, where organisms might be engineered to function like programmable devices. By manipulating bioelectric and cellular signals, scientists could design organisms capable of performing specific tasks, responding to commands, or adapting their behavior, effectively merging biology with computation. This concept could, for example, blur the distinction between biological pets and programmable machines, imagining a future where living systems are fully customizable. This integration of biology and technology is further reflected in the development of soft robotics and biohybrid systems, where machines incorporate biological tissues for enhanced sensory and adaptive functions. Levin's work on bioelectricity supports the idea that these biological machines could operate through naturally occurring computational processes, challenging traditional distinctions between organic life and artificial intelligence.Clearly these developments raise profound ethical questions, and Levin is the first to say it. It poses many questions about the nature of intelligence, the potential for sentient machines, and the rights of biologically-based computing systems. But these developments could also help advance some of our most pressing health problems.Including in the brain. There's already a brain grown in a petri dish that can learn to play Pong. Called organoids, these are lab-grown, miniature models of human organs, developed from stem cells, can replicate structural and functional characteristics of actual organs.Brain organoids, in particular, mimic basic aspects of brain architecture and neural activity, allowing researchers to study development, disease, and neurological functions in controlled environments. These "brains in a dish" have advanced to the point where they can exhibit learning behaviors, like playing Pong.In this experiment, a brain organoid was connected to electrodes, which allowed it to interact with a simplified version of game. Over time, the organoid learned to play the game by modulating its neural activity in response to feedback from the game environment. This groundbreaking demonstration revealed the potential of organoids not only for studying brain function but also for creating neural systems capable of learning and adapting, pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence and bioengineering.Such advancements highlight the possibilities of merging biological neural systems with computational tasks, a direction that may influence both neuroscience research and the future of AI. I wonder if DEVO ever imagined their man-machine themes and robotic humanoid movements would have emerged, in experimental form, in their lifetime.DEVO and their contemporaries didn't just create music; they engineered an evolutionary shift in sound that mirrored both cultural and biological processes. By blending analog instruments with emerging technologies like synthesizers and drum machines, their work reflected the modularity featured in Evo-Devo, where biological traits evolve through the recombination of existing genetic modules. Just as Evo-Devo shows how small adjustments in developmental pathways lead to novel evolutionary outcomes, DEVO's music was a synthesis of tradition and innovation, where new soundscapes emerged from reconfiguring the familiar all influenced by the culture and environment in which they exist. This creative evolution parallels biological processes, where complexity arises not linearly but through recursive adaptation and innovation often resulting in sudden unexpected leaps.Much like geography's dynamic role in shaping biological evolution, DEVO's sound was also shaped by external forces — cultural, technological, and industrial. In biology, physical environments like mountains, rivers, and urban landscapes impose selective pressures that drive adaptation, and similarly, DEVO's music arose at the intersection of human creativity and technological advancement. These external forces didn't serve merely as a backdrop but as active, reshaping elements, much like how geographic isolation on islands drives rapid speciation. The adaptability of organisms to urban environments mirrors how DEVO adapted the rigid precision of machines into organic, expressive art, blending the mechanical with the human, much like how species blend with their changing habitats. This fusion of man and machine is now emerging in the cutting-edge field of synthetic biology, where organisms are engineered to function like programmable devices. In the same way that DEVO's music blurred the lines between human creativity and machine precision, synthetic biology allows for living systems to be designed with programmable traits, merging the biological with the technological. Maybe Morg and Snorf will not just be 3D models on a 2D screen, but real bio-sythentic musical pets that invent and collaborate on music together — and with us.These biohybrid systems, where living organisms can perform tasks traditionally associated with machines, further illustrate the evolution of complexity through reconfiguration. Whether in music or existence, the distinctions between what is natural and what is artificial are growing more ambiguous, illustrating the continuous evolution driven by adaptation, creativity, and the interaction with outside forces. In Sussex, in 1912, men quarrying in a gravel pit near Piltdown village turned up a human skull. According to Charles Dawson, a lawyer and amateur archeologist with a remarkable track record for finding ancient treasures, it belonged to a palaeolithic man, possibly millions of years old, and was therefore the earliest trace of mankind ever found in England. Greater still, Piltdown man as he came to be known, seemed to be the ‘missing link' between apes and men. The discovery inflamed and delighted British society, confirming and buttressing dearly held beliefs about the evolution of modern Europeans, and radically transforming understandings of the origins of humanity. In the wake of the find and the widespread corroboration of its authenticity by some of the best academics of the age, further digs were conducted in the area, which unearthed even more wondrous discoveries - a jawbone, primitive tools, and strangest of all, a cricket bat; perhaps the first hint that all was not as it seemed…was the greatest discovery of all time nothing more than an audacious and extraordinarily skilful hoax? And if so, who was the culprit in this grand mystery?  Join Tom and Dominic, as they describe the most mystifying archaeological discovery in English history, and one of the most unscrupulous tricks of all time, revealing as they do the truth behind the history of mankind. _______ *The Rest Is History LIVE in the U.S.A.* If you live in the States, we've got some great news: Tom and Dominic will be performing throughout America in November, with shows in San Francisco, L.A., Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Boston and New York.  *The Rest Is History LIVE at the Royal Albert Hall* Tom and Dominic, accompanied by a live orchestra, take a deep dive into the lives and times of two of history's greatest composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. To think that none of them are actual apes. In this episode: Jason uses his handy dandy blow torch to slowly thaw the plot out, but it turned into wet sludge. Then William, while sharing this movie's production history, commits the greatest atrocity to Mother Nature. And who is Zippo? The answer: it's a new Universal Detective Club title. Episode 17 - Murdock and Marvel: 1979 This week the industry tries to pick itself back up after the disastrous DC implosion, the Direct Market starts to take on its modern look, and sales and hope are dwindling with retailers, publishers and creators.  Its time to see if the 70s go out with a whimper or a bang (hint: it's a whimper).  Lets look at 1979. The Year in Comics  Notable and Newsworthy Industry Trends Eagle Awards The Year in Marvel The year of licensed I.P.s Events & Happenings New Titles New Characters Series Ending Who's in the Bullpen ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Steven Grant The Year in Daredevil  Appearances: Daredevil #156-161, Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #26-28, Captain America #234-236, and Avengers #190  Writing credits: Roger McKenzie (156-161) Mary Jo Duffy (157)  Pencilers:  Gene Colan (156-157), Frank Miller (158-161) The year begins with Daredevil at Avengers mansion picking a fight with Beast, Hercules, Captain America and threatening Black Widow. After again issuing the warning to Widow, Daredevil collapses and is rushed to the hospital – where we learn he's gone into a coma.  During his hospital stay we see a dream sequence where Daredevil fights himself (which explains the cover of the issue (Daredevil fighting Daredevil) and Death-Stalker tries to make a move to kill him once and for all. He's first delayed by the Avengers and then confronted by an awakened Daredevil himself before escaping.  Next we see the Ani-Men trash the Legal Storefront and hurt Foggy as Heather Glenn, Becky Blake look on and Black Widow tries to create a diversion so Murdock can become Daredevil. Ultimately Murdock is kidnapped by the Unholy Three. Though Widow is able to take down Bird-Man as they make their escape.  This leads to a final confrontation with the Death-Stalker in a cemetery – next to a grave site with Matt Murdock's name on it. Death-Stalker kills Ape-Man and Cat-Man rather than giving them their reward for bringing him Murdock. We also learn that the Death-Stalker was once another villain Daredevil took on – The Exterminator (whom he fought way back in issue 40). Daredevil and Death-Stalker fight but the fight ends when Death-Stalker re-materializes while passing through a tombstone. This is our spotlight this week.  The year ends on a three-book story arc involving Eric Slaughter who is hired by a mysterious Mr Poindexter to capture and/or kill Daredevil for half a million dollars. This leads to Daredevil fighting them at a pier at midnight and when they are unsuccessful in taking him down, we learn that Poindexter aka Bullseye has kidnapped Black Widow as a way to get to Daredevil.  Meanwhile we see Ben Urich looking into Daredevil and Matt Murdock at Fogwell's Gym (and it seems like he's made the connection).  Back in the action, Daredevil goes to confront Bullseye and Slaughter at Coney Island. Bullseye stages a death of Black Widow on a roller coaster but Daredevil “sees” right through it. The scene shifts to the arcade where a final battle takes place between Daredevil, a freed Black Widow and Bullseye, Slaughter and his men.   Bullseye briefly gets the upper hand before Daredevil is able to knock him to the ground. Bullseye tells Slaughter and his men to attack, but they refuse saying they respect Daredevil and don't believe he'll honor their contract – which allows Daredevil and Widow to tie him up and take him to the authorities. New Powers, Toys or Places New Supporting Characters New Villains This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #158 from May 1979 “A Grave Mistake!”  Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway ROM and the Toys of 1979 Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you!  Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES  Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm.  You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/.  The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts.  Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data.  Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details.    The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years.  Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time.  Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics.  This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377.  My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss.  This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage.  BOOKLIST  The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show.  Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it!  Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo.  Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon.  London: Titan Books, 2020.  This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print.  It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion.  So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing.  Wells, John.  American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964.  Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015.  Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read.  Wright, Bradford.  Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America.  Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001.  This is the revised edition.  Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2022.  The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021.    Cowsill, Alan et al.  DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2010.  Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to.  Dauber, Jeremy.  American Comics: A History.  New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022.  An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments.  An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

In 1928 he would savagely murder and butcher five-year-old Dorothy Schneider of Mt. Morris, Michigan. With his identity still unknown, he would earn yet another name, The Slayer. Few clues were given as to who this fiend could be. Who was he? Where was he? The key that led to the killer and his capture could be described as almost supernatural. Johnny Weissmuller made his debut as ‘Tarzan The Ape Man' on April 2nd, 1932, when MGM released the first talkie to feature the jungle hero - spawning a Tarzanmania craze. The blockbuster, loosely based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' 1912 novel, was commissioned in part because the studio held additional footage from their African-set hit from the previous year, ‘Trader Horn'.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal how Weissmuller's Olympic swimming career had hinged on a forgery; explain how the filmmakers created Tarzan's famous yell; and investigate why MGM stepped in to fund their big star's divorce… Further Reading: • ‘Johnny Weissmuller Dies at 79; Movie Tarzan and Olympic Gold Medalist' (New York Times, 1984): https://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes.com/learning/general/onthisday/bday/0602.html • ‘The 50 MGM Films that Transformed Hollywood - Triumphs, Blockbusters, and Fiascos, By Steven Bingen' (Lyons Press, 2022): https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/The_50_MGM_Films_that_Transformed_Hollyw/bYh0EAAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=tarzan+ivor+novello&pg=PA50&printsec=frontcover • ‘Trailer: Tarzan the Ape Man' (MGM, 1932): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIoPPD0NKhA This episode first premiered in 2023, for members of

George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast to review five all-time great classic films released on Blu-ray in December.  We go through each of the films and the included extras to help you decide if you want to add these films to your home collection. We start with the highly requested  TARZAN, THE APE MAN (1932) from MGM starring Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan.  This terrific casting made this film a hit on its initial release and led to a series of films.  But this is the one that started it all and the new 4K scan means that you now get to see and hear the film in the best condition since its initial release.  The same can be said for our next film, ANNA CHRISTIE (1930) starring Greta Garbo in her first "talkie" film.  Garbo shines, and the film still packs a punch 93 years after its initial release.  Next is the Academy Award-winning film THE GREAT ZIEGFELD (1936) starring the irrepressible William Power, Best Actress winner Juice Rainer, and Myrna Loy in the biopic on the famous entertainer.  We review all of the extras on this packed disc and George details the restoration and many of the stars of the film.  Our fourth film is the powerful drama MADAME BOVARY (1949), starring Jennifer Jones, Van Heflin, Louise Jourdan, and James Mason.   We discuss the powerful teaming of director Vincente Minnelli and composer Milos Rossa and their importance to the film.  And we detail the extras, especially the MGM 25th Anniversary retrospective film.  We wrap up our discussion with the fan favorite GENTLEMAN JIM (1942) starring Errol Flynn in his favorite role and directed by one of his favorite collaborators, director Raoul Walsh.  This is pure entertainment at its best, combining drama, comedy, and sport. The disc is loaded with extras and makes for a tantalizing release.Purchase links:TARZAN, THE APE MAN (1932)MADAME BOVARY (1949)THE GREAT ZIEGFELD  (1936)GENTLEMAN JIM (1942)ANNA CHRISTIE (1930) The Extras Facebook pageThe Extras Twitter Warner Archive & Warner Bros Catalog GroupOtaku Media produces podcasts, behind-the-scenes extras, and media that connect creatives with their fans and businesses with their consumers. As Daredevil continues to struggle to develop its voice as a title, the characters continue to evolve and transform into the heroes we know them as today. In Daredevil #9, Matt gets his first “you-may-get-your-sight-back” story as well as the first DD villain who never shows up again – in fact, never even sees mention again. Klaus Kreuger acts as a rough Doctor Doom stand-in, and finds himself slipped into Matt & Foggy's past, and then just as easily slips right back out again. But of course, regardless of anything else, Matt's struggles against ableism are far from over. Next – Daredevil continues to transform as a title before The Billy Club's eyes! Join Nico and Tori as they take a look at Wally Wood's Daredevil script, a story taking DD from his previous element to the next stage of his storytelling – a crime/superhero hybrid! The Organizer recruits The Organization (convenient!) featuring Cat-Man, Frog-Man, Bird-Man, & Ape-Man to cause a crimewave as Foggy Nelson becomes a political figure. In some ways, these are the base elements of what will become Daredevil's building blocks going forward, but at the same time, this silly story never moves to where it needs to to sustain the Crimson Crusader and his place in the Marvel Universe! Then – Well, we knew this was coming. In an effort to create more Daredevil, Daredevil stops being Daredevil, exactly. Daredevil makes the switch to monthly and in, to accommodate additional issues, a three-part story about Ka-Zar completely replaces the title. It's a weird choice. Ka-Zar, while a staple of the Marvel Universe, is not a great fit for Daredevil and the weird dynamic created by forcing Daredevil into a story in his own title meant to facilitate crafting a bigger picture for the burgeoning comic line, Daredevil truly begins to get lost in the lack of an identity presented by being not-quite-Spider-Man-for-adults. Last – It's been an exciting weekend for Daredevil fans!! Your Billy Club hosts Nico & Tori couldn't be more thrilled about all of the amazing news that came from San Diego ComicCon this year, so we've put together a little reaction special just to talk about it! Don't worry, they'll be back with their usual DD deep dives on our next installment. Until then, stay fearless! Goin' Ape: RSR hosts Fred Williams & Doug McBurney welcome RSR's resident “ape-man” expert Brodie Leitch back for more analysis of exhibits from the evolutionists premier temple of “ape to man” evolutionary tales the “Hall of Human Origins.” *Loco-Motion: The evolutionary mechanisms of “competition” and “survival of the fittest”, (that generations of American government school teachers have flogged) is not apparent in the fossil record, even to evolutionists and train aficionados like Brendan M. Lynch. *Stupid is as Stupid Does: Hear about a bit more fun Fred had with ChatGPT with an inquiry as to whether “human evolution is stupid.”  INSERT Stupid Evolution Chat IMAGE *Sponsor the Broadcast: Join us in building a thriving ministry speaking biblical truth to a world gone mad! Click through to sponsor a year, a month, a week, (or even just one Friday) of Real Science Radio right now! *Don't Trade Genesis! Doug and Fred ask Brodie his best advice for equipping young people to resist evolutionary dogma. His advice? Follow the advice of the Late Great Bob Enyart, never trade Genesis for what the evolutionists lack! (An actual theory of human origins). *Licks for the Leakeys: Hear how Doug was “flogged” but good in 8th grade science class, (mostly for acting up), but tangentially, for laughing out loud about assertions regarding human evolution that Mary Leakey herself would later admit were “nonsense.” CORRECTION – the most feared paddler at Doug's government school was actually Mr. Witcher in science class and not Mr. French who belted it out in Auto-Mechanics class, (just in case any old class-mates are keeping track). *One of These Days…. One of These Days, Lucy… Brodie and RSR pursue an edifying and eye-opening evaluation of more of the evidence for a supposed human ancestor called Australopithecus Afarensis in the “scientific” journals, (but named Lucy in the schoolhouse). INSERT Laetoli Footprints IMAGE *The Laetoli Footprints: The Smithsonian claims that Laetoli contains “the oldest documented bipedal footprint trails” (which supposedly belong to afarensis) but in 2005, an article from “Scientific American” reported that: “The prints show that whoever made them had a humanlike foot arch, and the reconstructed A. afarensis foot exhibits just such an arch... The problem, Harcourt-Smith and Hilton say, is that the reconstruction is actually based on a patchwork of bones from 3.2-million-year-old afarensis and 1.8-million-year-old Homo habilis. And one of the bones used to determine whether the foot was in fact arched--the so-called navicular--is from H. habilis, not A. afarensis.” Along with the fact that the Laetoli footprints probably don't even belong to afarensis, they aren't the “oldest documented bipedal footprints”. “Science daily” reported in 2017 that: “Newly discovered human-like footprints from Crete may put the established narrative of early human evolution to the test. The footprints are approximately 5.7 million years old and were made at a time when previous research puts our ancestors in Africa -- with ape-like feet.” This, while nearly annihilating the classic “out of Africa” story, is only one of the many discoveries squeezing evolution. The Smithsonian (like many evolutionists) claims that Afarensis “stood on two legs and regularly walked upright”, but in the same article, pose the questions: “Did Au. afarensis usually walk upright like modern humans, or did they spend more time climbing trees like other living African apes?” and “We know Au. afarensis were capable of walking upright on two legs, but they would have walked differently than modern humans do today; so, what did their bipedal locomotion look like?” Evolutionists J. T. Stern Jr., and R. L. Susman, partially answered those questions when they wrote in the “American Journal of Physical Anthropology”: “The fact that the anterior portion of the iliac blade faces laterally in humans but not in Chimpanzees is obvious. The marked resemblance of AL 288-1 (Lucy) to the chimpanzee is equally obvious… It suggests to us that the mechanism of lateral pelvic balance during bipedalism was closer to that in apes than in humans.” With evolutionists William Harcourt-Smith and Charles Hilton concluding: “afarensis almost certainly did not walk like us or, by extension, like the hominids at Laetoli.” While “afarensis” being occasionally bipedal wouldn't prove that they were human ancestors, (after all, lots of animals are bipedal and apes occasionally walking upright is nothing special) the hypothesis that afarensis was bipedal isn't worth much thought because there are so many Problems with ‘Lucy' as an Upright Walker. Some evolutionists have recognized the issues with “afarensis” as a human ancestor. Algis Vincent Kuliukas wrote in the journal “Advances in Anthropology”: “The general shape of the pelvis of Australopithecus afarensis is confirmed to be fundamentally different from both Homo and extant great apes, and not intermediate between them.” With Britannica defining “Australopithecus” (not just afarensis) as a “group of extinct primates closely related to, if not actually ancestors of, modern human beings”. Which means that the scientists writing for Brittanica are also not convinced that the “most famous human ancestor”, is actually a human ancestor.

*Missing Link: RSR hosts Fred Williams & Doug McBurney welcome RSR's resident “ape-man” expert Brodie Leitch to analyze skeletal fossils and other sundry bits surrounding the one thing the evolutionists don't have, (i.e. a theory of origins). This makes you wonder how they get away with calling their premier temple of “ape to man” evolutionary tales the “Hall of Human Origins.”  * Fake Gender Friday: Listeners remind RSR that there is a show on NPR that mimics Real Science Radio from time to time, (when they happen to mention octopi that is. Not when they're promoting the criminal mutilation and molestation of children). *Lost Generation: The negligence of the church in understanding and teaching the science of Genesis, and human origins has proven fatal to millions of kids born into nominal Christianity, but abandoned by fearful, ignorant adults to secular myths that lead straight to Hell!  *Earth to Captain Kirk: Doug tells the story of the late great pastor Bob Enyart leading his church group through the Denver Museum of Natural History's “Prehistoric Journey” exhibit, and causing the curator, “Dr.” Kirk Johnson to question his own existence. (“Captain Kirk” has since failed upward through the ranks of bureaucrats to become assistant secretary of something or other at the Smithsonian).  *Open AI Shuts Down: Fred sent ChatGPT into “Network Error” mode by asking it for "evidence against ape-man”, and then showed the stupidity of the Open AI programmers by asking it about something stupid, (i.e., human evolution).  *Sponsor the Broadcast: Join us in building a thriving ministry speaking biblical truth to a world gone mad! Click through to sponsor a year, a month, a week, (or even just one Friday) of Real Science Radio right now!  *Lucy in Disguise with Lies on…: Listen in as Brodie Leitch out-smiths the Smithsonian in his analysis of the rather extraordinary sleight of hand, (and mind) baked into the myth of “Lucy”, and other popular ape-to-man evolution stories. Australopithecus afarensis (Lucy)             *Army of < One: While anthropologists brag that the bones of AL-333 represent an “army” of hundreds of implied skeletons, a closer examination of the record proves each “specimen” is actually a bone fragment, (equal to about 1.33% of a skeleton) and not even one complete skeleton at all!             “Australopithecus afarensis” (pronounced: “Ah-strey-low-pith-eh-kus a-far-en-sis”,) was formally named in 1978 after several fossil finds in Ethiopia and Tanzania. However, fossils found as early as the 1930s (40 years prior) have been labeled as “afarensis”.  “afarensis” is best known from the following specimens:  AL 288-1   AL 288-1 (AKA “Lucy”) is arguably the most famous of the “Afarensis specimens”. It's a group of bones which were collected from a large hillside and assembled into a partial skeleton. Some evolutionists claim that the skeleton is around 40% complete, but of the 207 bones that supposedly existed, only 47 have been found, making this “skeleton” (by bone count) only 22.7% complete. (47 ÷ 207 = 22.7%) Many evolutionists claim that all the bones in the skeleton belong to a single creature or at least a single species. This idea was brought into question when it was discovered that a baboon bone had remained in the skeleton for over 40 years. (If you think that an ape-man turning out to be a conglomerate after 40 years sounds familiar, you may be on to something.)   *Out With a Roar: Hear about the metatarsal bone attributed to one of Lucy's relatives, (and said to be serious evidence of an upright walking posture), and judge for yourself if someone examining it could be mistaken, (especially if they examined it with certain presuppositions)?                              *Making ChatGPT See RED: When Fred asked ChatGPT about “apemen”, it started off OK, but then appears to have lost its temper, and stormed off into a “Network Error.”
