“The Tragic Life of Classic Cinema Star Gail Russell” (082) - 4/07/2025 Hollywood legend has it that ethereal beauty GAIL RUSSELL was discovered after a Paramount Studios talent manager picked up two hitchhiking Santa Monica high school boys who told him all about the "Hedy Lamarr of Santa Monica High School." Allegedly, he then tracked down Russell at school and arranged for a screen test. The rest, as they say, is Hollywood history. If only it had been that easy. Russell, who was painfully shy and had no interest in a career as an actress was pushed in front of the camera by her ambitious mother and the executives at Paramount who saw dollar signs in her startling blue eyes. This week, we explore the life and career of one of Hollywood's most tragic beauties, GAIL RUSSELL. In this conversation, John Cornelison and Russell Guest from Retro Movie Roundtable discuss the film noir movie Leave Her to Heaven (1945). They share their initial thoughts on the movie, the director's background, and the unique elements of the film. They explore the genre of film noir and how it can be seen in different genres. They discuss the performances of Gene Tierney, Cornel Wilde, and Vincent Price, as well as the dark and complex character of Ellen. They also touch on the themes of obsession, possessiveness, and the tragic endings of some Hollywood stars. Overall, they recommend the movie but caution that it is a dark and heavy film. **Reviews Mentioned Retro Movie Roundtable** Retro Movie Roundtable - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/retro-movie-roundtable/id1439985015 Inherit the Wind (1960) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUNuzRMhqyk&t=232s Laura (1944) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81lsl7b9MbA Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgaUrsbAYTQ The Maltese Falcon (1941) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fvk2AoXUZ0g Double Indemnity (1944) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWDT7L2P9_I The Asphalt Jungle (1950) -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SW24rggaww The Third Man (1949) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVMftCxsX6s Breaker Morant - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyPTJjzluGo Strangers on a Train (1951) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkMlWFdX4ME Leave Her to Heaven (1945) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ccOhs-Az_0&t=36s **Reviews Mentioned Classic Movie Review** Laura (1944) - https://youtu.be/C9hSo2NTyC8 The Shanghai Gesture (1941) - https://youtu.be/cLUAQC_N4e4 Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) - https://youtu.be/N8UDFuzujXk The Maltese Falcon (1941) - https://youtu.be/iDqjuPCKUVc Double Indemnity (1944) - https://youtu.be/3KFf4vhmYxI The Asphalt Jungle (1950) - https://youtu.be/fynIloiiVDY Dark Waters (1944) - https://youtu.be/KEdr_A9FZ9o Angel and the Badman (1947) - https://youtu.be/qTwF_0eN_KA Breaker Morant (1980) - https://youtu.be/9MGaGJnn7F4 **My Links** Social - https://mtr.bio/classicmovierev My Merch - jcornelison.redbubble.com My Site - https://classicmovierev.com/ My Books - https://www.amazon.com/John-E-Cornelison/e/B00MYPIP56 **Affiliates** Libsyn Podcast Hosting - https://signup.libsyn.com/?promo_code=CMR Grammar Checker Links - https://grammarly.go2cloud.org/SH1ax Internal Link Juicer WordPress - https://r.freemius.com/2610/2395752/ **The Equipment I Use for YouTube** Camera - https://amzn.to/3SjOUnI Audio - https://amzn.to/3gsatFu Teleprompter - https://amzn.to/3CQZQUf GoPro 9 - https://amzn.to/3ITZcbw **Say Hi on Social** Website: https://www.classicmovierev.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/classicmovierev/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/classicmovierev **Chapters** 00:00 Introduction and Background 01:25 Initial Thoughts on the Movie 04:19 Film Noir Elements in 'Leave Her to Heaven' 07:15 The Use of Technicolor in a Noir Film 08:39 Gene Tierney's Performance and Tragic Life 12:59 Character Transformation of Cornell Wilde 20:16 The Ultimate Sacrifice and Darker Twists 23:11 Legal Consequences and Ellen's Villainy 25:35 Impact and Recommendation **Disclaimer** CMR is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to www.amazon.com. This week we head to Scotland as we explore the tragic life of Amber Gibson. Aged just three, Amber, along with her five-year-old brother Connor, had already endured a life of neglect and abuse - it was all she knew. But when she was removed from the family home and placed into foster care, it looked as though she was destined for a happy ending... However, as we know all too well, it doesn't always happen like that. While her foster family was loving and supportive, a catastrophic chain of events had already been set in motion that would see her betrayed in the cruellest of ways. Ame Deal should have been a thriving and happy 23-year-old, and instead, her legacy is one of heartbreak and suffering. Child abuse can take many forms, and the bystander effect may cause us to believe that what happens within another family is ‘not our business'. In reality, it is everyone's business to call out abuse and contact authorities, whether you are a mandated reporter or not. Ame was treated differently from her siblings by the entrusted adults in her life, culminating in one of the most disturbing instances of child abuse and murder I've ever covered. Who's to blame for the tragic life of Blanche Monnier? This week, The Alarmist (Rebecca Delgado Smith) speaks with Zoe Friedman about Blanche Monnier and the unspeakable abuse and imprisonment she was forced to endure for over 26 years in her family home. We know some of the culprits involved, but what drove them to such madness? Was fear of losing their place in high society driving these cruel acts? Could oppressive puritanical standards be to blame? Or were they simply in too deep? Fact Checker Chris Smith and Producer Clayton Early join this haunting conversation. The cases you usually hear on true crime podcasts, the ones we usually cover, have a clear perpetrator and a clear victim. One person is in the wrong, the obvious suspect, the “villain” in the case. One person is innocent, the one who has been wronged and whose justice we long for. But then come cases that flip on their head our conception of wrong or right, good or evil. Today's story is of one such case. It is a case of a woman, abused, tormented and emotionally tortured until she snapped. This is the story of Dr. Chamari Liyanage.

Show Notes Episode 409: Everybody Knows (OJ Did It) Part 1 of “Wheezing the Juice” This week Host Dave Bledsoe sprints through the bar toward the exit with a Jameson in hand one step ahead of the bouncers, just like OJ through the airport. (If OJ were a fat, white, middle aged drunk dude) On the show this week we kick off our Summer Series with Part One of “Wheezing the Juice” (We tried to convince him NOT to name it that!) talking about The Juice and all the things that led up to the Events of 1994. Along the way we learn that Dave thinks he was very “progressive” for adhering to the basic tenets of criminal procedure. (Honestly, we kinda have to give him this one) Then we dive right into the backstory of Orenthal James Simpson. (Relax, we keep it pertinent). From there we explain why White America loved OJ! (He was one of the ”Good Ones”) and why OJ thought he could get away with murder. (He DID play Norberg on Police Squad!) Finally, we do as best we can to discuss the crime without being excessively childish. (He BARELY pulls it off.) Our Sponsor this week is Murder-abelia dot com, your source for murder related sports collectibles. We open with OJ pontification on the art of acting and close with Eydrey explaining how we all KNOW who did it. March 17, 1828. The celebrated clown, Joseph Grimaldi, rises from his sickbed. Once London's most energetic performer, he's gradually been crippled by decades of pratfalls and acrobatics. He can barely manage the short walk to Sadler's Wells theater, where he's about to star in a final show. Grimaldi dresses backstage as if he's in a daze, burdened by a lifetime of personal sorrows. And yet, when the curtain rises, he'll summon the old strength. He'll entertain this last of his countless audiences and send them home happy – unlike the clown himself. Who was Joseph Grimaldi? And how did he blend humor, irreverence, and humanity to fundamentally change comedy? Special thanks to our guests, Andrew McConnell Stott, author of The Pantomime Life of Joseph Grimaldi: Laughter, Madness and the Story of Britain's Greatest Comedian, and Naomi Shafer, Executive Director of Clowns Without Borders USA. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
All around Europe, there are small brass bricks inlaid into the ground before the front doors of apartment buildings and houses. These bricks are like a decentralized memorial—they are known as Stolpersteine—which means stumbling stones—and engraved on each one is the name of a citizen who was persecuted or exterminated by the Nazis during World War II. At an apartment building in Berlin that stands at Wielandstrasse 15, you will find the name of Charlotte Salomon on one of these stumbling stones. As it says on the little brass brick, she was born in 1917 here; she fled Germany to France in 1939; she was interned at a French concentration camp in Drancy; she was deported and murdered in Auschwitz in 1943. Charlotte was also a visionary young artist, and she created a hugely ambitious work of art called Life or Theater. Made in just over a year while living in exile in France, Life or Theater consists of more than 1,000 individual gouache paintings, sectioned into three acts. It is an artwork that defies easy categorization. It is something like an autobiography, but also not quite. There are characters that are just like her own family and friends, but their names are slightly changed. There is music that is meant to accompany her vividly painted scenes, which tell the story of her coming of age as a young woman and an artist. The story shows what played out on Wielandstrasse in Berlin as the Nazis rose to power; the persecution of her family; the death of her mother from suicide, and later her grandmother. It tells about her suffering in exile, it discusses a murder. It also captures the birth of a brilliant artist who finds a lifeline in making art. It is hard to neatly summarize everything Life or Theater addresses—but as Charlotte put it herself, the piece is “something crazy special.” Not only is the work picturesque in the way it is painted and formally ground-breaking, Charlotte managed to achieve something deeply intimate and personal but also universal with this work. She gave it to a friend for safekeeping before she was taken to Auschwitz and it survived the war and is now in the possession of the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam. People do not seem to be as aware of Salomon as they should be giving the pioneering, avant-garde nature of this artwork. On the occasion of an upcoming exhibition of Life or Theater at the Lenbachhaus in Munich, Artnet News's Kate Brown was joined by the show's curator Irene Faber, who is also the curator of collections at the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam, and an expert on Charlotte's life and art.
