“OLD HOLLYWOOD's TOXIC TRIANGLE” - 5/19/2025 (088) Hollywood in the mid-20th century was a world of glitz and glamour, a realm where dreams could be made or destroyed in an instant. It was an era when the silver screen crafted illusions of romance and perfection, yet behind the scenes, the personal lives of its stars often unraveled into chaos, scandal, and tragedy. Few stories exemplify this dark side of Hollywood better than the volatile love triangle involving actress BARBARA PEYTON and actors FRANCHOT TONE and TOM NEAL. What began as a passionate romance descended into obsession, violence, and ultimate ruin—forever marking the three as cautionary tales of unchecked desire and self-destruction. In this episode, we explore this explosive love triangle and its aftermath. Always Hope

For many of us, belief isn't always easy. Life throws curveballs. Promises don't pan out the way we thought they would. Secularism raises doubts in our minds. It's hard to reconcile the joy we sing about this time of year with the struggles we face in our day-to-day lives. But belief doesn't always start with clarity. Sometimes, it starts in the messiness of life, when everything feels out of alignment. That's where Christ finds us. That's the story of Christmas. And that's where this episode begins—by looking at faith not as a perfect, clean answer, but as a journey. A journey that's deeply personal, sometimes hard, but always transformative. Today, I'm sitting down with Dr. Tom Neal, to discuss the origin story of his faith life. Tom is a brilliant mind, a loving soul, someone who has dedicated his life to teaching the gospel, but like all of us, has had a journey. Tom's story—from questioning faith to experiencing a profound, life-changing encounter with Christ—reminds us that joy and belief can exist, even in the hardest moments. This is a vulnerable and candid episode about how we encounter Christ and why we still believe amidst hardship. So, sit back and let this story unfold. Because as we reflect on this Advent season, this isn't just about belief in theory—it's about what happens when belief meets real life. As always, please leave questions in the comments.   Full quote from Fr Carlo Carretto: https://nealobstat.wordpress.com/2021/08/19/the-church-broken-so-the-light-can-enter-in/ Chapters 00:00:00 Introduction 00:06:08 Tom's Upbringing and Family Life 00:15:53 Tom's Miraculous Encounter with Christ 00:22:03 The Aftermath and a Newfound Faith 00:31:07 Choosing Catholicism 00:38:51 Exploring Other Religions Through a Catholic Lens 00:49:45 Maintaining Belief Amidst Hardship 00:54:05 The Importance of Prayer 00:57:56 Am I a Bad Catholic? 01:02:04 Mario's Journey of Faith 01:13:05 The Intelligibility of the Catholic Faith 01:22:57 Tertullian's Paradox 01:27:33 Fr Carlo Carretto Quote on the Mystery of the Catholic Church   Not sure how to start a conversation with a someone you find attractive? This week the docs take a brief jaunt OUT of Los Angeles to the sunny and gorgeous sands of Hollywood's Desert Playground - aka  Palm Springs. Although a year round destination for relaxation and glamour, there are dark aspects among the glittering sapphire pools of the Oasis of the Desert's past. After all, a place with golden age ties to Hollywood is bound to have some sordid stories to tell - case in point: the tumultuous life of Tom Neal, a promising Hollywood actor in the late 1930s, groomed to be the next Clark Gable. Neal's career, however, was overshadowed by scandalous affairs and headline-grabbing incidents that eventually derailed his success. Despite a brief resurgence as a leading man in the 1940s, his off-screen behavior, including a notorious altercation with actor Franchot Tone, led to his downfall. By the 1950s, Neal struggled to find work, relegated to minor roles on local soap operas, where he continued to clash with colleagues. Despite several attempts to reinvent himself over the years, his desperation and addiction led to business failures, scandal and a brutal murder.CrimeCon UK September 2024: Tickets Berkshire Podcast Festival October 2024: Tickets Join our Patreon family! You can find all of our resources on our website: https://www.la-not-so-confidential.com/  L.A. Why did God give us free will? Think about it. All the poor judgments made by humans, the evils we have committed, the collective sins of history… wouldn't creation have been better off without free agency? By the end of this show, you'll know why the answer to that question is an unequivocal “No.” I bring back my good friend Dr. Tom Neal, and his patience, as he allows me to wrestle with these deep and troubling questions. Once again, his wisdom shines through in his answers. In this episode, we go after why God gave us free will, how without we could not love, the problem of moral evil, how we are not mere puppets in the hand of capricious God, why we need to cherish this supreme gift endowed on us, and glimpse of what our free will may look like in heaven. I know I say this with all my episodes, but this truly is another gem of a show. At times, we get philosophical but hang it there, because it is worth it. You'll walk way cherishing the gift of your freedom. Don't forget to subscribe to the show, share with friends, and hit me up on Facebook or Instagram, @drmariosacasa.
