Was this revenge? Was this the occult? Who killed the Evangelist family? "On the quiet summer evening of July 3, 1929, Benny Evangelist and his family were brutally murdered in their residential Detroit home on St. Aubin Street, mutilated by an axe-wielding killer. His wife and four children were butchered while sleeping in their beds, while Benny himself was killed—and nearly decapitated—in his study. "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth". There are 4.8 billion people alive that believe this to be an accurate description of how our world came to be. In the 1920's, there was a man living in Detroit who believed that the true creation story was VERY different than the one were given in the Book of Genesis. So, he wrote his own. Soon, hundreds were coming to him for religious teaching, magic rituals, curses, hexes, and love potions. He was living the American dream, until one day in 1929 when someone broke into his home and murdered everyone inside with an axe. Someone who has never been caught. This is the story of the Benny Evangelist Family Massacre. _________________________________________ Episode Written and Produced by Tyler Liston Music used with full permissions and licenses from Artlist.io _________________________________________ Want to be a part of a future bonus episode of The Timber? The news was shocking. Occult obsessed cult leader Benny Evangelist, his wife, and their four young children had been murdered in their lavish Detroit home by an ax-wielding maniac. Beheaded. Dismembered. As police ran down the long list of suspects, an unfathomable possibility emerged. Was Benny himself behind the murders? The 1929 St. Aubin Street Massacre is one of Detroit's oldest and most notorious cold cases, but it is not alone in its tragedy. In 1990, it happened again. And while the circumstances were very, very different, the end result was the same- six lives lost, and many more destroyed in a massacre on St. Aubin Street.

On the quiet summer evening of July 3rd, 1929, the entire Evangelist household was brutally murdered in their home on St. Aubin Street, in Detroit. The decapitated body of Benny Evangelist was found seated at his desk in the study, his hand clasped together as though in prayer, his severed head lying on the floor beside his chair. His wife, Santina, and their four children had been butchered while they slept. The horrific murders shocked the local community, however, not everyone was entirely surprised… You see, over the years Benny had built up quite a reputation for himself as a self-proclaimed ‘prophet', ‘mystic', ‘faith-healer', and, arguably, a cult leader – something which probably garnered him just as many enemies as adoring fans. For these people, their kills have involved into a ritual – something that done to serve their Satanic cult worship or simply to satisfy bloodlust. These are 4 terrifying ritualistic killers. 4. Howard Green and Carol Marron On December 1979, a passing motorist in West Paterson thought he saw two figures lying by the side of the road. Police were called in to investigate and what they found were two sackcloth-wrapped bodies of a male and female. The two were later identified as Carol Marron, 33, and Howard Green, 51. Finding dead bodies by the roadside was disturbing enough but police found more evidence it was more than just casual murder. Both the victims had been severely beaten until they died. 3. Ottis Toole Born on March 5, 1947, Otis Toole led a disturbed life since childhood. He was born to a mother who was a zealot Christian while his older sister abused him at a young age and forced him to wear girls dresses. His grandmother was a Satanist who forced Ottis to help her rob graves and secure body parts she needed for her rituals. Prior to his father leaving them, he also abused young Ottis by forcing him to do various sexual acts for his male friends. In addition, Ottis only had an IQ of 75 and was likely a functional autistic. When he dropped out of school by 9th grade, he would meet local men in local gay bars. Ottis would later admit to police he knew he was gay by the time he was 10 years old and had come out to his family. 2. Evangelist Family Massacre Born in 1885 in Naples, Italy, Benjamin Evangelista, moved to the United States, in Pennsylvania by 1904 at the age of 19 years old. He changed his last name from Evangelista to Evangelist and decided to take on an unusual job. In 1906, Benny Evangelist began receiving "visions from God" and decided to record the visions in a four volume book called "The Oldest History of the World: Discovered by Occult Science." He soon declared himself to be a divine prophet, mystic healer and spiritual leader while working as a carpenter for his day job. 1. Richard Ramirez Texas-born Richard Ramirez grew up in a large family. At a young age, Ramirez received multiple head injuries, particularly when he was hit by a swing at the age of 5. This caused him to start having epileptic fits. During his adolescent years, he began taking drugs and became heavily influenced by his cousin, Miguel. Miguel Ramirez was also a violent war veteran who often told Richard how he had tortured various Vietnamese women while in service. He even took pictures of his brutality and showed it to Richard. By the time Richard was 13, he witnessed Miguel kill and murder his wife. There were 4 Terrifying Ritualistic Killers ------------ These sadistic killers all had many things in common – a lust to kill, inflict pain and a seemingly endless drive to ritually carry out their twisted rage onto innocent individuals
On July 3, 1929, Italian immigrant and occult mystic healer, Benny Evangelist, was beheaded with an ax in his home office. The killer than murdered Benny's sleeping wife, Santina, and their four children upstairs. The murders remain a mystery, but what kind of motivation could inspire such a frenzied and brutal attack? In this episode, we delve into occult practices, magic, folk Catholicism, magical healers, a suicide inspired by fear of the ax killer, Italian folklore, as well as a look at the misconceptions about immigrants at the time, and how that may have affected the case, leaving it a perplexing, eternal mystery.
We continue our week of supernatural true crime stories with the murder of an American mystic and a clairvoyant connection from England. Jonatan's tale is of the 1929 St. Aubin Street Massacre. Was it someone who believed they'd been conned by Benny Evangelist, a follower who lost their faith or an opportunistic killing? Ana tells the infamous story of the Red Barn murder. In 1826, 25-year-old Maria disappears and her step-mother dreams of a gruesome end which leads to a shocking discovery. Did Maria connect with her step-mother from beyond the grave? And there's a short story about a ghostly car crash. If you've enjoyed the show, please share it with someone else who you think might enjoy it as well!
