Partnering with Grand Nordic, a non profit that promotes cross country skiing, they are launching a new youth cross country ski team for 3rd-5th graders this winter called the Grand Nordic Gliders."Our motto is 'as many kids as possible for as long as possible,'" said Chris Michalowski. He emphasized that skiing shouldn't be reserved only for those who can afford expensive equipment, and their goal is to create a path for any kid in Grand County to experience the sport. "Hopefully this team can get kids on the snow having fun," Michalowski added, expressing his hope that the program will become a feeder for the middle and high school teams and a catalyst for a lifelong love of skiing.Register for the Red Barn Relay

Charlie finally wraps up corn harvest, and that means a weight is lifted as part of a Christmas Miracle. But now we have Bridge Payments to fret about! What the heck are they, how are they calculated and when does it all happen?  We have some of those answers to go along with a whole lot of Ryan and Charlie speculation for this week. Weather looks very un-Christmas-like, markets certainly are scrooge-worthy, and Charlie was a winner in harvest Bingo this year. Ryan is already deep into meeting season. Charlie is still harvesting corn in the snow. Temps have already pushed below zero and the markets still suck. But we ponder this: How many times have you lamented about what is wrong with your world, your community or your country, and wanted it to be different? This week we sit down with Mike Thompson, a District Sales Manager for a regional seed company who has decided to try and make a difference by running for the Indiana State Senate seat in District 17. After recapping the year in the field on test plots, genetics and what's in the pipeline, we shift to his senate run, the thought process and ask "have you gone mental, man?"...but in a polite and curious way. This episode speaks a lot about ambition, loyalty, community pride and setting an example.

Murder is a ghastly matter. At the hands of a loved one, it truly becomes heinous. Most murder victims are murdered by someone they know and a high percentage are killed by either a lover or spouse. This is not a new statistic. History proves that to be a fact. Polstead, Suffolk, England was not a place where one would expect a murder to occur, particularly in 1827. But a crime of passion did take place here and a young woman was left dead. The horrifying murder was nicknamed the "Red Barn Murder" because of the location of the murder. The paranormal takes center stage in the solving of this case as the victim's stepmother was visited by her spirit at night, three times. And then there is the cursed skull of the murderer and his spirit. Great stories here, like responding to good and bad decisions with big and small reboots to stay competitive, lessons learned from his Dad—and the need for civic minded people who can “drain the swamp” and fix our broken political ecosystems.

"Send us a Fan Mail Text Message"What would you do if your job was on the line, but your safety was at risk? This episode of the Ol' Dirty Basement podcast is a heartfelt journey into the personal experiences of our mothers—Sharon, Rita, and Rose—during the Three Mile Island disaster of 1979. Sharon takes us back to her days at the Red Barn restaurant, where she made a gut-wrenching decision to leave despite her boss's stern warnings. Listen to these incredible women share their gripping stories of fear, confusion, and the indomitable spirit of a community in crisis.Unravel the complex web of public perception surrounding nuclear power in the late '70s. We reflect on the influence of media portrayals, like "The China Syndrome," and discuss how our understanding of radioactivity was shaped by proximity to places like Three Mile Island and Los Alamos. Personal anecdotes bring to life the mixed reactions during the evacuation—some fled immediately, while others grappled with uncertainty. Our mothers recount the varying neighborhood responses, the eerie quiet of deserted streets, and the overwhelming anxiety fueled by mixed signals from officials. The conversation doesn't just stop at the moment of crisis. We delve into the long-term health concerns and fears of radiation exposure that haunted the Harrisburg community. As we reminisce, lighter moments surface, offering a nostalgic look at local dining spots and vintage cinema. From the chaos of evacuation to the poignant return home, this episode is a tribute to the resilience and enduring spirit of those who lived through one of the most significant nuclear incidents in American history. Jojola's family roots are an amazing part of America. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwUX-IypQnY   A dedicated father, Jeremy Jojola felt horrible about how his engagement with Twitter (X) detracted from his time with his now four-year-old daughter and put him in a foul mood. So he stopped, and it has been a year of better mental health. https://jeremyjojola.com/2024/05/06/one-year-clean-and-sober-from-twitter/   Jojola discusses his favorite movie, The Milagro Beanfield War, and the discussion gets enlightening. The story reminds the host of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Ernest Hemingway and the host's recent trip to Spain. Spanish roots run deep. https://jeremyjojola.com/2023/08/22/why-the-milagro-beanfield-war-still-matters-35-years-later/   Nazis and far-right extremists have been the subject of Jojola's most important reports. Four years ago, Jeremy won the Don Bolles Medal awarded by the Society of Investive Journalists and Investigators. Discussion of Trump's United Reich talk and possible election ensues. https://www.9news.com/article/about-us/jeremy-jojola-don-bolles-medal/73-42f1031c-b327-4916-b8cd-d4b5b711b1d5   Recently, Jeremy Jojola won the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award (for a second time) for his 9News story about the Red Barn on the way to Denver International Airport. You can see and hear the amazing artistry of Jojola's storytelling talent. https://www.9news.com/article/news/local/storytellers/denver-international-airport-old-red-barn/73-8fbd8c8c-f7d4-4f94-8152-44d63549230f   Troubadour Dave Gunders debriefs his host on his Spain trip and discusses the impact of Trump's “Unified Reich” posting. A menorah purchased in Spain triggers stories, as do friends in Andalucia. As for Nugs and Avs collapses, we review connections to the law firm of "champions no more." In the first half of the 19th century, there was a single murder that, having ensnared the English countryside in a web of scandal, permeated throughout society and popular culture for decades after its conclusion. Having all the elements of a story written as a gothic thriller, theso-named Red Barn murder sparked a year-long mystery, culminating in a revelation that exposed a history of darkness, hidden beneath a façade of respectability that shocked the nation to its core. In this week's episode of The Venue Rx Podcast, our host Jonathan Aymin sits down with Ryan and Danielle Patrick, owners of The Red Barn Weddings & Events. Ryan and his wife share their journey of transforming their walnut orchard in Northern California into a wedding venue. They delve into the hurdles they encountered, such as securing county approval and building permits, and detail the renovations undertaken to transform the property into a suitable space for weddings. The couple reflects on their agricultural backgrounds and the transition into the wedding industry. Sharing insights, they elaborate on booking events, handling power supply logistics during functions, and adapting venue packages to accommodate diverse needs. Additionally, they shed light on their respective roles in the business, their approaches to marketing, and their future aspirations for the venue. About Our Guests:  Ryan and Danielle are the owners of The Red Barn Weddings & Events. The Red Barn has been in Ryan's family for over 25 years, undergoing various transformations from a Nuts & Gifts Store to a Walnut Hulling & Shelling facility, and most recently becoming the beautiful venue it is today. In 2018, Ryan and Danielle made the decision to expand and redefine the future of The Red  Barn. Through research, hard work, and patience, they navigated the permit process and embarked on a journey of renovations. Their official permit was obtained in June 2019, marking the beginning of the transformation from a Walnut Huller to a Wedding Venue. Over the course of a year, they created the bridal suite, groom suite, renovated the reception barn, and added a spacious 15,000 sq. ft. lawn for the ceremony area, all in preparation to host remarkable weddings and events. However, just as they were on the verge of opening, the pandemic struck, altering the landscape of special events. Undeterred, Ryan and Danielle used this time to enhance and create additional remarkable spaces for future weddings. Now, The Red Barn features a large wooden arbor, a stunning chandelier for romantic first dances, and a truck stage capable of hosting either a band or a DJ, allowing guests to dance the night away under the stars.
