In honor of America's 250th birthday and American Icons month (in a cool, liberal way), we're celebrating the trailblazers who helped shape the country, and few reached greater heights than Sally Ride. This week, we're telling the story of the physicist who became the first American woman in space, broke through one of the world's most exclusive boys' clubs, and inspired generations of girls to dream bigger. But behind the headlines was a woman who fiercely guarded her private life. For nearly three decades, Sally shared her life with her partner, Tam O'Shaughnessy, a relationship the public didn't learn about until after Sally's death. We explore why she chose privacy, what it meant to be a gay woman navigating fame in the 1980s and '90s, and how her legacy extends far beyond her historic spaceflight. From NASA missions and media scrutiny to quiet courage and lasting impact, this is the story of an American icon whose influence is still reaching for the stars. Episode 298 of Tom Clark's 6M Podcast is a look at The Superman Wars: A Battle for Truth, Justice, and an American Icon by William Bernhardt. Tom breaks down the 2026 book that explores the decades-long battle behind the creation of Superman, focusing on Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's journey from two young creators in Cleveland to the men who changed comics forever. He examines how Superman was born, the infamous $130 sale to DC, the legal battles over ownership, and the decades of struggle for creator recognition, compensation, and credit. He also discusses Bernhardt's research into the court cases, copyright fights, the restoration of the creators' names, the impact of industry legends who fought on Siegel and Shuster's behalf, and what the Superman saga means for modern creators protecting their own work. Is The Superman Wars a powerful reminder of the human cost behind one of the world's greatest fictional icons, or does the complicated legal history show just how difficult creator rights remain in entertainment? Send us Fan MailFew figures loom larger in aviation history than Amelia Earhart. Yet after hundreds of books, countless documentaries, and nearly a century of speculation, how much do we actually know about the woman behind the legend? In this episode, Laurie Gwen Shapiro talks about her bestselling book, The Aviator and the Showman. Drawing on newly digitized interviews, archival discoveries, and years of research, Laurie argues that the real mystery of Amelia Earhart isn't what happened to her at the end of her final flight—it's understanding who she was as a person. We explore Earhart's journey from social worker and hobby pilot to international celebrity, the complicated role publisher and promoter George Palmer Putnam played in her fame, and the tension between aviation skill, public image, and advocacy. We also discuss the extraordinary ways Earhart used her platform to champion both aviation and women's rights.Along the way, we venture into the world of some of Earhart's remarkable contemporaries, including Eleanor Smith, Louise Thaden, Lady Mary Heath, Bessie Coleman, and Jackie Cochran. We also talk about the challenges—and rewards—of writing history that is deeply researched, rigorously sourced, and unafraid to embrace the complexity of its subjects.Whether you're a lifelong Amelia Earhart enthusiast or someone who has wondered why she continues to captivate the public imagination nearly a century later, I think you'll find this conversation both thought-provoking and illuminating. And if you're a writer hoping to dig into a different historical mystery, you'll learn from Laurie's expertise as an author, journalist, and professor of journalism. Buy the book: https://literaryaviatrix.com/book/the-aviator-and-the-showman/Some links we discuss in the episode: NASM Amelia Earhart Project Recordings: https://sirismm.si.edu/EADpdfs/NASM.2020.0025.pdfArchive Grid: https://researchworks.oclc.org/archivegrid/Book Finder: https://www.bookfinder.comDid you know you can support your local independent bookshop and me by shopping through my Bookshop.org affiliate links on my website? In this episode, we speak with renowned-Roosevelt scholar and former host of the podcast Michael Patrick Cullinane about his new book Theodore Roosevelt and the Tennis Cabinet. We often imagine Theodore Roosevelt as a singular force who reshaped the presidency through sheer energy and will. But Cullinane offers a different perspective, showing how Roosevelt relied on a network of informal advisors—his “Tennis Cabinet”—to generate ideas, implement policy, and expand the reach of the federal government. Together, we explore how this network functioned, what it reveals about the emergence of the administrative state, and how it reshapes our understanding of executive power, both in the Progressive Era and today. You can purchase the book directly from the University of Nebraska Press here. It turns out that the islamic terrorist who killed at ODU isn't the only ISIS terrorist receiving a lenient sentence and put back on the streets of America. Why are TERRORISTS getting tried in cfederal courts and receiving light sentneces? These aren't white collar criminals convicted of stealing retirement accounts. They're terrorists plotting the mass murders of Americans in the name of Allah! Meanwhile, the left had a hysterical reaction to Trump's responsee to the Japanese reporter who confrinted Trump for not warning Japan before the beginning of Operation Epic Fury. If only they had as much outrage over the killing of Americans at the hands of Iran. What is the "boob tax" and what does it have to do with Airlines? Send us Fan MailIn this episode, we are joined by Laurie Gwen Shapiro, a bestselling author, journalist, and adjunct professor at NYU's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. A member of the Explorers Club, her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and The New York Times. She is the author of The Stowaway, the true story of a teenager who stowed away on a ship bound for Antarctica during the Jazz Age, and The Aviator and the Showman: Amelia Earhart, George Putnam, and the Marriage that Made an American Icon, a New York Times Editors' Choice and one of the best books of the year by NPR, The New Yorker, and Smithsonian Magazine. But before our conversation with Laurie, we set the stage, because the Amelia Earhart story is deeply a Pan Am story. On January 9, 1929, three defining figures of the aviation age stood on the tarmac of Pan Am's new Miami terminal, Juan Trippe, Charles Lindbergh, and Amelia Earhart. Trippe invited Earhart aboard Pan Am's Fokker F-10A, captained by Edwin Musick, for the inaugural flight to Havana. At the center of that relationship was Fred Noonan, Pan Am's greatest navigator, who charted the transpacific routes. When Earhart assembled her team in 1937, Noonan was the navigator every conversation kept returning to. Trippe extended Pan Am's full cooperation, and Pan Am mechanics spent a week on her Lockheed Electra in Miami. On July 2, 1937, Earhart and Noonan departed Lae, New Guinea, bound for Howland Island - 2,556 miles of open ocean...and vanished. This episode also features rare archival audio from the Elgen and Marie Long oral history collection...aired publicly for the first time. Their 220-plus hours of recordings are preserved at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum as the Amelia Earhart Project Recordings. Among those voices is Pan Am's Harry Canaday, recorded in 1985 at age 76, reflecting on Noonan, the Pacific survey flights, and the world that produced the Earhart flight. These recordings are presented courtesy of David Jourdan of Nauticos and the Smithsonian Institution's Amelia Earhart Project.Support the showVisit Us for more Pan Am History! Support the Podcast!Donate to the Museum!Visit The Hangar online store for Pan Am gear!Become a Member! Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!A very special thanks to Mr. Adam Aron, Chairman and CEO of AMC and president of the Pan Am Historical Foundation and  Pan Am Brands for their continued and unwavering support!

It's Thursday, February 26th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Russian-Ukrainian war in its fifth year The war between Russia and Ukraine entered its fifth year this week. International Christian Concern reports religious communities in the Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine continue to face harassment and violence. Protestant churches are especially targeted with intimidation, raids, and closures. The European Evangelical Alliance is calling on Christians to pray for their brothers and sisters caught in the conflict. The organization noted, “Churches continue to serve courageously. Acts of compassion and solidarity are widespread. Stories of protection, provision, and spiritual awakening remind believers that God remains present and active even in the darkest times.” Romans 8:28 reminds us, “We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” 1.8 million casualties in Russian-Ukrainian war After four years of fighting, Russia and Ukraine have experienced an estimated 1.8 million casualties. That includes people killed, wounded, and missing.  U.S. President Donald Trump continues to broker peace talks between the two countries even as the war drags on.  Ukrainian representatives plan to meet with U.S. envoys in Geneva, Switzerland today. This is ahead of a potential trilateral meeting between the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine next week.  U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently wrote on X, “President Trump wants a solution that ends the bloodshed once and for all.” European Commission fines X $140 million Speaking of X, the company is challenging a $140 million fine imposed by the European Commission.  The commission is using the European Union's Digital Services Act to impose censorship on American tech companies. Jeremy Tedesco with Alliance Defending Freedom stated, “The platforms the Digital Services Act targets … are the modern public square. They are where Americans debate politics, share their faith, and hold the powerful accountable. … The EU Commission is targeting X for a simple reason: X is committed to free speech, and the Commission demands censorship.” El Mencho's Mexican cartel extorted and harassed pastors As The Worldview reported on Tuesday, Mexico's military forces killed the drug cartel leader, Nemesio Cervantes,  known as “El Mencho” on Sunday. He was the most wanted person in Mexico and one of the most wanted people in the United States.  The cartel he led was known for terrorizing not only businesses but also church leaders in Mexico. Pastors faced intimidation, extortion, harassment, and threats at the hands of the cartel.  Trump affirmed “one nation under God” In the United States, President Donald Trump delivered his 2026 State of the Union Address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday.  The speech lasted for an hour and 48 minutes, the longest State of the Union Address in modern tracking.  At one point, he asked a question. TRUMP: “One of the great things about the State of the Union is how it gives Americans the chance to see clearly what their representatives really believe. So tonight, I'm inviting every legislator to join with my administration in reaffirming a fundamental principle. “If you agree with this statement, then stand up and show your support. ‘The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.'” (Republicans applauded) Not surprisingly, all the Republicans stood and all the Democrats remained seated, revealing the stark contrast between the two major parties. Throughout his speech, the president mentioned the upcoming 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. He acknowledged the hand of Providence in our country's destiny and celebrated recent renewal in religious interest among young people. Listen. TRUMP: “I'm very proud to say that during my time in office, both the first four years, and in particular this last year, there has been a tremendous renewal in religion, faith, Christianity and belief in God. “This is especially true among young people, and a big part of that had to do with my great friend, Charlie Kirk, a great guy, a great man.” (You can watch the State of the Union here.) Singer Johnny Cash remembered for faith in Christ And finally, today marks the birthday of Johnny Cash. The iconic American singer was born on February 26, 1932.  He rose to fame in the music scene in the 1950s before coming to Christ later in the 1970s. He became known as the “Man in Black” for his all-black stage suits.  After his conversion, Cash would use his music to share the Gospel, often performing at Billy Graham Crusades.  Cash remains one the best-selling music artists of all time. He was inducted into the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame.  One of his last recorded songs was called “I Came to Believe.” Listen to the chorus. “I came to believe in a Power much higher than I. I came to believe that I needed help to get by. In childlike faith, I gave in and gave Him a try. And I came to believe in a Power much higher than I.” Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Pick up a copy of Greg Laurie's biography entitled, Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon.  And watch the Christian movie by the same name.  Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, February 26th, in the year of our Lord 2026. Follow us on X or subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music, or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.  Plus, you can get the Generations app through Google Play or The App Store. While the rest of the world is talking about celebrity cameos and "Free Bird" soundtracks, Zappi is looking at the numbers that actually move the needle. Nataly shares exclusive insights from their testing of Budweiser's "American Icons" ad, revealing a fascinating disconnect between Gen Z's emotional response and their brand recall. We also tackle a glaring missed opportunity in the industry: why women influence 85% of household spending but are still underrepresented in Big Game creative. If you've ever wondered why trying to appeal to "everyone" is a recipe for a marketing flop, this data-heavy deep dive is for you.Key Takeaways:// Entertainment vs. Sales Impact: Why an ad that "wins" the social media conversation often fails to drive short-term purchase behavior—and how to measure the difference.// The Gen Z Brand Recall Gap: An analysis of why younger audiences (under 36) loved Budweiser's 2026 ad but struggled to remember the brand, and what that means for your creative strategy.// The Power of Icons: Why the Clydesdales and the American Bald Eagle drove Budweiser into the 88th percentile for sales impact among older demographics.// The "Female Influence" Arbitrage: Women make up nearly half the NFL audience and control $31 trillion in spending; Nataly explains why giving them only 1/3 of the "speaking time" in ads is a massive strategic error.// The Failure of "Universal" Appeal: Why the most successful ads are those that speak clearly to a defined segment rather than diluting the message to please everyone.// Emotional Peaks and Troughs: How using recognizable music and "timeless" storytelling creates the engagement necessary to keep viewers from tuning out.Connect with Nataly: LinkedInZappi Super Bowl Study, Live Beginning 02/09: The Study____Join the MHH Collective! This week we're bringing you a powerhouse series of episodes that celebrate some of the most formidable women to ever take the mic on Second Act Stories. These conversations are fueled by bold decisions, hard-won confidence, and the kind of reinvention that only comes after you've lived a little. From breaking the rules to rewriting the script, these women didn't just pivot; they claimed their second acts with clarity, grit, and momentum. Whether you're a longtime listener or tuning in for the first time, these episodes capture the fire at the heart of our show: fearless choices, earned wisdom, and stories that prove it's never too late to bet big on yourself. Stuckey's is a legendary and iconic thread in the fabric of Americana. Founded in Eastman, Georgia in 1937 by WS "Sylvester" Stuckey, Sr., Stuckey's grew into a roadside empire by the 1970s, with 368 stores in more than 30 states. Part of the charm that made Stuckey's so iconic were its ubiquitous billboards, more than 4,000 of them, which were dotted along U.S. highways. Stuckey's was an inextricable part of what became known as "The Great American Road Trip." Fast forward to 2019, Stuckey's was on life support. The brand had gone through hard times, and its former stand-alone locations, still identifiable by their teal blue roofs, were now relics of a bygone era. Some were abandoned and boarded-up; others became home to less-than-savory businesses. By this time the brand had changed hands multiple times and become an unprofitable line item on a bigger company's balance sheet. But Stuckey's was about to experience a surprising rebirth. In 2019, former Georgia legislator Stephanie Stuckey, a practicing attorney at the time, received a fateful phone call. Stuckey's, the brand started by her grandfather all those years ago, was up for sale. With no experience in running a business, 53-year-old Stephanie defied the odds (and the advice of virtually everyone she spoke to), cashed in her entire life's savings, and traded her future to buy back and revive the business bearing her family's name. Since then, Stephanie has become a legend in the business community. A perfect storm of scrappiness, shrewd business sense and passion, she's now a bone fide rock star with all the street cred to stage a successful turnaround. And she has the receipts to prove it. Under Stephanie's leadership, Stuckey's and its flagship pecan log rolls are back in black. In this episode, Stephanie discusses growing up with an iconic last name, her career as a legislator and attorney, her decision to lay it all on the line to buy back her family's business, how she's rebuilt the brand, and what's next for Stuckey's. Stephanie chronicles her life on the road at her Instagram account, @stuckeystop. Her new book, "UnStuck: Rebirth of an American Icon," is available at Amazon or wherever you buy books. ******* If you enjoy Second Act Stories, please leave us a review here. Specifically, what does it mean to be sexy in today's consumer marketplace? Using Sherman's book Selling Sexy: Victoria's Secret and the Unraveling of an American Icon (co-authored with Chantal Fernandez) as a jumping-off point, they trace the rise and fall of Victoria's Secret from its 1970s roots to its hyper-polished “angel” era and eventual cultural backlash. They explore how internal power dynamics, the male gaze, the #MeToo movement, and the shadow of Jeffrey Epstein all collided with Gen Z's changing relationship to sex and identity, alongside new marketing playbooks and social media.Along the way, they compare old standards of sexiness to new ones across industries (from fashion to autos), celebrities (from Rihanna to Kim Kardashian), and brands (from Calvin Klein to Byredo). Finally, they explore how certain 'unsexy' brands (like Talbot's and Eileen Fisher) might be revived by embracing modern ideals of beauty, aspiration, and consumer desire.

Revolution: Prince, the Band, the Era (Backbeat Books, 2025) is a detailed exploration into the era of Prince's most prolific and groundbreaking music made with considerable inspiration and performed by a unique cadre of musicians he gathered and relentlessly drove to be the sonic, visual, and ideological reflection of his evolving vision. Although being the most self-contained, versatile, and prolific artist of his era, Prince reveled in the band, a multi-racial, intergender unit that acted as both family and loyal acolytes that embodied his ethos, expressed his pathos, and lifted him to rarified heights of pop dominance. This is the story of the genre-shifting, multi-media, trailblazing Prince & the Revolution from their humble inception to their precipitous rise in celebrated hit singles, albums, films, and tours to their controversial and shocking demise. James Campion is a columnist, essayist, and associate editor for the pop culture magazine The Aquarian Weekly, where he's reported on and interviewed rock stars and reviewed concerts and albums for thirty years. He has also authored three previous books on music: Shout It Out Loud: The Story of KISS's Destroyer and the Making of an American Icon (2015), Accidentally Like a Martyr: The Tortured Art of Warren Zevon (2018), and Take a Sad Song: The Emotional Currency of Hey Jude (2022). My Business On Purpose
The Hidden Chaos Holding Back Your Contracting Business (And How to Stop It)

My Business On Purpose

You know that dashboard in front of you when you get in a car and start driving it around? One of the things you're looking at, obviously, is the speedometer, odometer, the fuel gauge—those sorts of things. But it's also those lights, those warning lights that can come up and let you know what the performance of the car is doing. And so in business, we have a dashboard. We operate via dashboard. And with that dashboard, there are also some warning lights—some yellow lights, some red lights—that we can look for. Hey, it's Scott Beebe with Business On Purpose. I wanted to walk you, as a business owner, through just a couple of red flags that you can begin to look for. Not to be obsessed about, but to simply understand as warning signs. Now, we do something in our business that we actually took from a book I read years ago called American Icon. It was the story of Alan Mulally, the guy who came from Boeing and descended into Ford and essentially helped Ford resurrect what they were in—about a $12 billion hole—back near the 2007–2008 time frame. One of the things he did was incorporate this idea of green, yellow, and reds into their system. So I want to talk about some of the reds that I think could be helpful for you as a business owner as you begin to sort of audit where you're at as a business. You often feel like your week is a constant whirlwind of just putting out fires. You're putting on the fire suit, putting out these little fires, and they always seem to pop up. You feel like you're drowning in emails, spending hours every day just trying to keep up and spinning. (I actually outsourced my email about three months ago, by the way.) Those are telltale signs that your business might be running on very thin ice, on low fuel—and you're running on chaos rather than a well-oiled system. Too many of our businesses are actually leveraging the wrong fuel. Instead of leveraging the fuel of vision, mission, values, repetition, predictability, and meaning—we're leveraging the fuel of chaos. So I want you to consider your team's performance and morale. If your team members seem confused or you're receiving poor performance reviews and negative feedback, it's time to start evaluating your process. We actually do a healthy owner assessment and a healthy team member assessment every year for each of our clients. This sort of gives these yellow or red flags—or in some cases, green flags—so you can understand what's working. Even if you're conducting surveys, the results might be pointing to some underlying issues in your organizational structure that you need to be aware of. Those are red flags to be looking for. Another red flag to watch out for is the absence of regular, agenda-driven leadership meetings or team meetings. These are essential for keeping everyone aligned and focused on your company's goals. If you find your production meetings are starting to drag on for two and three hours, that is a clear red flag. You've got to be looking at that. So, if you're not having meetings on a regular basis—Scott, what do you mean by regular? Let's start with weekly. If you're not having meetings weekly, that could be a red flag. If those meetings are going beyond one hour, that could be a red flag. And in many cases, it is a red flag. Those meetings need an overhaul. “Scott, we need more than an hour.” No, you don't. If you can't get it done in an hour, what about those decisions we have to make? Well, usually those decisions are between two or three people in the meeting. So identify the situation, have them write it down, and let them go on a one-off. That should not take more than five, ten, fifteen minutes. If they need longer than that, that's a workshop to begin to work on separately. Another red flag: missing schedules and falling behind on bill payments. These are serious symptoms of a disorganized business. If you find yourself in a position of robbing Peter to pay Paul—in other words, shuffling money around to cover immediate expenses—you are treading on very thin ice. In fact, you are running on pure chaos at that point. That practice of robbing Peter to pay Paul, while sometimes necessary in very dire circumstances, is quite unsustainable, risky, and sometimes illegal in the long run. All of those are signs pointing to a chaotic system. You're running on chaos fuel, and that system is really holding your business back. You're going to start lurching just like a car that's got bad gas in it. Without a solid framework in place, you're going to continue to struggle with efficiency, productivity, and growth—all the things you want. So it's time to step back, assess your current process, and implement systems that will bring order to chaos. Remember: a well-structured business is not just more profitable, it's also far less stressful to run and far more satisfying for everyone involved. Hey, we can help you with all of this. If you go to businessonpurpose.com/contact, we actually have metrics, systems, and tools that identify the green, the yellow, and the red. We can help refine those systems in your business. We've got it all templated out, ready to be customized for your business—so you can be liberated from chaos and make time for the things that matter most. Producers note: Folks, if you've been following this show for a while now, you know we go hard. All of the time. From last week's event in Washington DC to upcoming events later this year, to the non-stop news appearances (not to mention I make Paul walk around New York filming himself talking into a camera), to the multiple organizations he's helping run (Independent Veterans of America, American Veterans for Ukraine, Operation Liberty), we keep the hammer down.  But like Paul's mentor Les Gelb taught him, if you don't take a break you get stupid, and we don't want to get stupid. So today, we're taking a break. And throwing it back to one of our most popular guests and popular episodes with an American Icon that is in the headlines, and in Trump's crosshairs. So this week we're jumping in the Righteous Media time machine and traveling way way back to Episode 78 from September 24, 2020 with Stephen Colbert. It's a great conversation and one we think you'll enjoy revisiting. From Episode 78: “Fear is the mind killer. If you're laughing you're not afraid.” Wise words in this groundbreaking new episode from a truly iconic guest: Stephen Colbert (@StephenAtHome). [06:14] Stephen joins us from his home–uninterrupted and unedited in this fun, candid and inspiring episode. As we enter the most trying and important fall of our lifetime, Angry Americans is bringing in the big guns to get you through this trying time. And there are few bigger than Stephen Colbert.   President Mayhem is sheer chaos. He's doing anything and everything he can to disrupt our country, our unity and our day. And this conversation is the antidote. Stephen and host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) break down the current state of the country and what the future might hold. Stephen beams in from his home office and shares wisdom, jokes and some amazing stories. He talks about his trip to Iraq to visit the troops and why he shaved his head while he was there. His first car story is one of the best we've ever had. His answer to what makes him happy is heartwarming. But also painful. And expensive. This is Stephen Colbert like you've never heard him before. You'll just have to listen.  Because Independent Americans is built on the Righteous Media 5 Is: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. And this episode has it in spades.
