Marriage: it was the end of all illusions and the beginning of philosophy: marriage was a lesson in impermanence - not an idea, a daily unfolding. To remain calm in storms not of my making. Dinner is late. Plans change. Cushions are moved. I nod, smile, adapt. an ardent disciple of Aurelius. Closet space shrinks mysteriously. my belongings become philosophical concepts. Arguments teach a truth: words are insufficient. “Where do you want to eat?” “Anywhere.” (Anywhere is wrong.) And I discover the absurd as Camus sighs in his grave. I broach the thesis: “Let's watch a movie.” I receive the antithesis: “Let's talk.” And confront the synthesis: talk about why no movie is being watched. “What did I do wrong?” “I don't know.” But something is wrong. And thus begins a lifelong inquiry into metaphysics - what can truly be known? I examine questions of existentialism: what gives life meaning? Choice? Duty? Love? I lay in bed, see the fan whirl, and ask - what is love, bereft of drama? what is self, when it must bend? what is happiness, when it must be shared? What, indeed, is life, when it seeks surrender, but masquerades as gift. Essay: I sometimes feel that a philosopher dissects the deeper meanings of life, only to figure out that it is meaningless. And invariably, it has to do with human interaction, thought, foibles, decisions, reactions. And within the rigour of its investigation and compulsions is the real time change which humans wrought on each other. Marriage is the ultimate test of change and resilience. Crafted inside the crucible of love, it continuously tests the human power to forbear, resist, surrender and claim victory in survival. A less cynical view would view the wedded journey as a partnership which keeps on recalibrating itself until it hits a rhythm and a seamless marching cadence. In actuality it is a flawed construct, with a societal burden of "till death do us part". Which of course provides a longevity to breeding, rearing and mutual survival, but comes up wanting in providing universal succour. We are complex creatures. Feeling, hurt, chemistry, comfort, vulnerability, ego, belief, residual memory, remembrance, all swirl inside us like a Milky Way seeking their pre-eminence. And invariably coming up short when sought singularly. Luckily we are social creatures , necessarily living in a world which won't exist if not for cohabitation and coexistence. Thus ironically, the most successful marriages are the ones which recognise this need and build an ecosystem of relationships rather than one rooted in ownership, bound in jealousy, and closeted in insecurity. And just this musing is what makes a simple man transition into philosophy. Unknowingly, a man walks into marriage a simple human being and walks out wiser. As you heard last Wednesday, the focus was on quotes about April Fool's Day. Then on Friday, I decided I would do some more quotes about fools. However, I got so into talking about the first quote that I only did that one quote in Friday's episode. Therefore, I am doing the rest of the quotes I have on fools this week. I have three quotes about fools and foolishness for you each day this week. As always, I am so grateful to all of you who support the podcast! I do this show because of you. Aurelius Systems is tackling one of defense's most critical challenges: cost-effective counter-drone warfare. The company builds lightweight, edge-deployed laser weapon systems with 10-million-x marginal cost advantages over traditional interceptors—shooting down drones for approximately 10 cents versus $2 million per Sea Sparrow missile. With systems priced in hundreds of thousands rather than tens of millions of dollars, Aurelius is proving that commercial manufacturing principles can revolutionize defense technology. In this episode of BUILDERS, I sat down with Michael LaFramboise, CEO and Co-Founder of Aurelius Systems, to unpack how his background spanning automotive manufacturing at Chrysler, R&D at Coherent (the largest U.S. laser manufacturer), and defense sales positioned him to build what he calls "the F150 of directed energy systems." Topics Discussed: Why Michael's unusual combination of heavy industrial manufacturing, high-power laser R&D, and directed energy sales made him one of "probably like five people under 70 in the country" positioned to build this company Aurelius's contrarian R&D thesis: build everything from commercial off-the-shelf components first, only upgrading to bespoke when field tests fail The tactical fundraising progression: first prototype to pre-seed, DIU grant in February 2025, Singapore Defense Force joint challenge, Army X-Tech competition wins Government relations as infrastructure: why Aurelius retained a lobbyist six months post-pre-seed and how Congressional support addresses 1-3 year sales cycles Navigating the DOD acquisitions reorg: 100+ technology acceleration organizations consolidating to 10-20 under new PAE structure, with goals of 90-day turnarounds replacing multi-year cycles The demonstration strategy that changed everything: earning signed memorandums from high-ranking officers after shooting down drones in Hawaii and Austin under adversarial conditions (heavy rain, 99% humidity, heat warping, night operations) Founder-led marketing ROI: why acquisitions officers, funders, and engineering talent all follow different channels (LinkedIn vs. X) and require different voices The three-stakeholder sales complexity: when your end user (warfighter), purchaser (acquisitions), and budget authorizer (Congress) are separate entities who don't communicate GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Follow proven playbooks in specialized markets, then execute obsessively: Michael explicitly followed Anduril's early-stage defense playbook, particularly around government relations: "I think it's like following the Anduril playbook for how you do an early stage defense company is probably a very appropriate thing to do." In highly specialized B2B markets (defense, healthcare, financial services), pattern-match to companies that have successfully navigated regulatory and procurement complexity rather than inventing process from scratch. The differentiation comes from execution and technology, not from reinventing go-to-market structure. Treat specialized expertise as infrastructure, not overhead: Aurelius hired a lobbyist six months after their pre-seed—before significant revenue—because defense sales involve three disconnected stakeholders. Michael explained: "your purchaser, your end user, and your authorizer for funds are all separate people that don't know each other... whenever you have these different points, it doesn't expand linearly the difficulty or the complexity of the sales cycle. It expands exponentially." B2B founders should map stakeholder complexity early and staff accordingly. If your buyer doesn't control budget, your user doesn't make purchase decisions, or your champion needs internal air cover, these aren't edge cases—they're your sales model. Demonstration beats documentation when overcoming category skepticism: After decades of directed energy failures, Aurelius spent 2024 conducting nationwide field demonstrations, culminating in adversarial drone shoot-downs in heavy rain, 99% humidity, and night conditions. Michael noted they needed to "clean up the mess that a lot of these other companies have created" with signed memorandums from high-ranking officers. When your category has a failure history, customer education isn't about better pitch decks—it's about systematic proof that eliminates objections through witnessed performance. Plan for demonstration costs and timeline in your first-year budget. Build your R&D thesis around manufacturing reality, not engineering perfection: Aurelius's core principle: build everything from commercial off-the-shelf components, upgrading only when field tests fail. Michael's insight from automotive and laser manufacturing: "you can get 80-90% physics perfection on a system for 2% of the cost" versus traditional directed energy's approach of "400 ARL and AFRL PhDs all coming together to make the most super bespoke, hyper perfect thing ever." They use material processing lasers (identical output at 1/10th the cost of directed energy lasers) and commercial components from automotive supply chains. B2B founders should define their "good enough" threshold explicitly and build cost structure around it—perfection is often the enemy of scalability and margin. Attack market dislocations where wrong-fit solutions reveal unmet needs: Aurelius doesn't compete with Sea Sparrow missiles for shooting down aircraft at 9 miles—they target the dislocation where $2M missiles designed for large ordinance are being misused against $500 drones with 30% effectiveness. Michael identified that "there isn't anything in the market that's been developed for counter drone at any significant distance." The opportunity isn't better missiles; it's purpose-built solutions for Group 1 and Group 2 drones (FPV quadcopters and small planes) where no appropriate system exists. Map where customers are forced to use expensive, inappropriate solutions—that's where new categories emerge. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co // Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I Hire Senior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams. This episode spotlights three themes driving BlueTech's current research cycle. Rhys and Divya open with the momentum behind ceramic membranes, ahead of the 11 December web briefing with Dr. Graham Pearce and the release of BlueTech's Ceramic Membranes 2025 Update. Once a 2% niche, ceramics now claim ~10% of the market, lifted by cost reductions, flat-sheet formats, and the EU's proposed PFAS restrictions that could phase out PVDF. With players like MetaWater, Sōbra, Stech, and Filtech expanding into wastewater and desalination, ceramics are shifting from premium to increasingly mainstream. The episode then moves to BlueTech's Innovation Tracker, highlighting VBact, a 4.5/5 BlueTruffle-rated bacterial scanner offering real-time, AI-driven microbial monitoring at low operating cost. Already deployed in food and beverage, it stands out for continuous phenotypic fingerprinting—though regulatory acceptance remains the key barrier. A full report on bacterial monitoring systems lands next month. Finally, the hosts examine Aurelius' acquisition of Xylem's international metering business, a move TAG experts describe as strategic refocusing. The divestment allows Xylem to double down on software, analytics, and digital twin partnerships, while Aurelius takes on a complex, hardware-heavy portfolio.Together, these threads capture the technology, regulation, and market shifts framing BlueTech's year-end research priorities--Presented by BlueTech Research®, Actionable Water Technology Market Intelligence. "All that happens, happens right: you will find it so if you observe narrowly..."This week, I am reading a quote from Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, written around 171 AD.Reflection questions:When you think about a failure during the campaign, how are you observing narrowly for the right things that came out of it?How are you using failures to spark deeper conversations with donors?Reflection on quote:In working with capital campaigns, it's not surprising that I'm well-acquainted with failure as well. A donor event that no one shows up to. A campaign stewardship update that has hardly any opens. A direct mail campaign that goes out later than expected. As much as I want every activity during a capital campaign to be successful, that's not real life. When failure happens during a time of economic uncertainty, it can feel even more overwhelming. A wise campaign volunteer once told me that a capital campaign is like a riding a wild stallion without a saddle. There is a lot that is out of our control and that can bring failure. All that happens, happens right. Notice that Aurelius didn't say, all that happens, happens perfectly. Or, successfully. But, he says “right if you observe narrowly.” We can get stuck in embarrassment or paralysis. We can fear that donors and prospective donors will stop giving to the campaign because of our failure. This fear can be particularly damaging during economic uncertainty. Instead, we need to have a different mindset about failure. A failure can help us have more honest interactions with donors. For instance, ask donors for suggestions on keeping them updated with the campaign. Or, a failure can lead to the right conversations with the right donors. For example, a smaller-than-hoped-for event can open up a more in-depth conversation that wouldn't have been possible if the event was larger. Failures can lead to growth when we have the right attitude, which is the second half of the quote. Let your aim be goodness in every action. We don't fail in fundraising because we want to fail. But we will fail because failure is a part of life. So, we don't aim for perfection or status. We aim for goodness. Goodness for the cause that we serve. And, remember, donors don't give to us. They give to the cause through us. They want to see the expansion succeed for the good of the community, which is their community too. This work has entered the public domain. What do you think? This book rediscovers a lost history of the Roman Empire, written by Sextus Aurelius Victor (ca. 320-390) and demonstrates for the first time both the contemporary and lasting influence of his historical work. Though little regarded today, Victor is the best-attested historian of the later Roman Empire, read by Jerome and Ammianus, honoured with a statue by the pagan Emperor Julian and appointed to a prestigious prefecture by the Christian Theodosius. Through careful analysis of the ancient evidence, including newly discovered material, this book re-examines the two short imperial histories attributed to Victor in the manuscripts, known today as the Caesares and the Epitome de Caesaribus, and discusses a wide range of both canonical and neglected authors and texts, from Sallust and Tacitus to Eunapius and the Historia Augusta. I'm joined by Scott Berdahl, CEO of Snowline Gold (TSX.V:SGD - OTCQB:SNWGF), for an update on the company's recent drill results and broader exploration progress across the Yukon. Key discussion points: Jupiter Target (Einarson Project): Strike length extended by ~550m, bringing mineralized trend to ~1.9 km and open along strike. Highlight intercept: 6.8 g/t gold over 9m. Strategy mirrors Valley's early success with large step-outs to quickly test scale before infill. Next steps: blend of selective infill, deeper tests, and additional step-outs to north and south. Valley Deposit (Rogue Project): Current resource: 7.9 Moz Indicated + 0.9 Moz Inferred. New mineralized zone discovered east of the proposed pit, with visible gold. Recent holes confirm continued growth at the margins, including intercepts beyond the current pit shell. Engineering and environmental baseline work advancing alongside drilling. Regional Exploration: Seven additional targets drilled at Rogue in 2025 (Cujo, Ramsey, Aurelius, JP, Gracie, Duke, Charlotte) totaling over 6,000m. Two holes completed at Neptune (Einarson Project); assays pending. Strategic goal: identify another Valley-scale system while continuing to expand Valley. Snowline is executing on a dual-track strategy - advancing Valley toward development while systematically testing district-scale opportunities. The combination of strong Valley resource growth and Jupiter's step-out success highlights the potential for multiple large discoveries across the company's portfolio. Updating your perspective on the world can, for some, be like seeing for the first time. Many of us have seen videos of colorblind people getting access to new tech that helps them see the full spectrum. When they tap in for the first time, it's overwhelming and emotional. Something true shines through a veil that they've been burdened with forever. I remember when I started to reconnect with my faith several years ago, and things were becoming clearer to me about who I am and why I am here. I would get distracted while driving by trees and landscapes. Particularly Japanese Maples and other crimson trees mixed into mostly green gardens. Something was more striking about everything. Refined Jedi Sight Consider this poem out of the Star Wars universe about the role of the Jedi Order in bringing balance to the galaxy."First comes the dayThen comes the night. After the darknessShines through the light. The difference, they say,Is only made rightBy the resolving of grayThrough refined Jedi sight."― Journal of the Whills, 7:477It's a beautiful stanza. Light is reality. Darkness is equally valid and inevitably enters the world, complicating whatever light came before it. What confounds so many of us is when the canvas then turns gray. Complex experiences and feelings stop us in our tracks.Am I loved? What is the right thing to do here?Somebody gets hurt, no matter what I choose. We overthink. We ache. You need a worldview, something that reconciles or can be used to interpret what you're experiencing. Glasses. Philosophy. Story. Philosophy is in many ways a kind of story. The danger is, of course, that not all glasses reveal tru th equally. The Jedi, this poem suggests, have refined sight or an ability to interpret what's happening. You might call that wisdom. How We Label ThingsJ.R.R. Tolkien wrote in his celebrated essay, On Fairy Stories, about the role of a good story in illuminating the world for its audience. He called it “recovery” in the sense that our vision and health have been compromised. A good story heals.Separating himself almost directly from the Stoics, Tolkien quipped, “I do not say ‘seeing things as they are' and involve myself with the philosophers,” which is what Marcus Aurelius or Epictetus would call for. “I might venture to say,” Tolkien continues, “seeing things as we are (or were) meant to see them.”Geeky Stoics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The Stoics had a dogmatic commitment to blunt reality and practiced it by doing things like calling wine “the mere juice of crushed grapes,” so as not to romanticize what it's called for commercial purposes. Steak is a piece of dead cow, scorched and salted. That's the “truth”. Dead Scorched Cow is a little less appealing for 12oz at $45 than calling it Premium Aged Ribeye Steak.“We need, in any case, to clean our windows; so that the things seen clearly may be freed from the drab blur of triteness or familiarity—from possessiveness,” Tolkien adds.Whether it's eyeglasses, windows, or stained glass, the idea that unites so many great thinkers is that something exists outside of the room we're living in. There is something we're missing, and either smudges, a faulty prescription, or the absence of light is preventing us from seeing what we're supposed to see on the other side.Truth. Beauty. Purpose. Design.Overexposure and familiarity dull the senses to what would otherwise take our breath away. The Stoic mindset, though it has a lot to offer, has some pitfalls, including this one. Aurelius refers to sex as just “friction between bodies — followed by a convulsion”. Okay…..He's trying to deter himself from lust by demystifying sex and pointing out some of its peculiar and unattractive realities. That may have some utility, but it's cold, and sex, like Tolkien might suggest, is meant to be something far more powerful, warm, and beautiful than this. The triteness and overfamiliarity Tolkien describes is also a good way to think about pornography and what it does to the viewer over time. Clean your windows from the “drab blur”. Have you ever seen Mount Rainier just beyond Seattle, Washington? It's a wonder. The mountain stands so tall and grand that on a clear day, it's like an alien spaceship landing on the horizon. The first few times you lay eyes on it, particularly if you're not from that mountainous region, you'll do a double-take.How is that real?Let's return to the issue of the steak. What if the answer is neither the Stoic insight, that it's merely a charred strip of animal flesh, nor is it this thing we excitedly call steak? What if it's just sustenance, nourishment, and a gift deserving of gratitude? That is the perspective most of us are missing every single day. It's not “Thank you Lord, for this ham, eggs, and sourdough,” it's actually, “Thank you Lord, for this bounty.”Call the food whatever you want to call it, but what matters most at the end of the day is the value you attach to it. It's a pretty good value to consider your meal a blessing and to be grateful for it. Has gratitude ever steered a person wrong? New on YouTube This is a public episode. FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text Message"Whatever we face, we have a choice. Will we be blocked by obstacles or will we advance through and over them?" This powerful question, posed by Ryan Holiday in his bestselling book "The Obstacle Is the Way," frames our exploration of ancient Stoic wisdom and its remarkable relevance to modern challenges. We dive deep into the philosophical foundation that transformed emperors into legends, examining Marcus Aurelius—the Roman emperor who ruled during plague and war yet maintained unwavering wisdom and integrity. His personal journal, "Meditations," continues to inspire millions with its practical guidance on resilience and virtue. As the last of Rome's "Five Good Emperors," Aurelius embodied the Stoic principles that teach us to focus on what we can control while accepting what we cannot. This Mojo Minute unpacks the profound yet simple truth that what stands in our way often becomes the way forward. We distinguish between mere action and "directed action"—the thoughtful, purposeful steps that truly move us toward our goals. "Action is commonplace. Right action is not," Holiday reminds us, highlighting that persistence without deliberation misses the mark. True progress comes from approaching obstacles with courage, creativity, and a clear mind.Whether you're facing personal challenges, professional setbacks, or simply seeking a more resilient mindset, these timeless Stoic principles offer practical wisdom for transforming obstacles into opportunities. Join us as we explore how to take directed action with "deliberation, boldness and persistence" to create a flourishing life. While preparing for our discussion on Stoic encouragement, I came across two profound sentences from Marcus Aurelius that could truly transform your life. They emphasize the art of listening—truly understanding and connecting with the person you're engaging with. This approach serves as a powerful framework for healing, fostering empathy, and building deeper relationships. Though just two sentences, their wisdom has the potential to be life-changing.
The Calocaerus Revolt (334 CE) was an uprising led by a certain Calocaerus, the Magister Pecoris Camelorum (Master of the Flock and Camels) in Cyprus, who declared himself emperor. The revolt was short lived and ruthlessly suppressed in the same year by Flavius Dalmatius, half brother to Emperor Constantine I. We know of the events from historians such as St. Jerome (Jerome of Stridon), St. Theophanes the Confessor and (our earliest source) from Sextus Aurelius Victor in his work De Caesaribus. Written in the 4th century, it provides a concise summary of the lives and reigns of Roman emperors from Augustus to Constantius II, and it draws heavily from the Enmannsche Kaisergeschichte, a lost source that served as a common framework for several late Roman historical accounts. This short (but important) source springboards us to next month's episode: the little known and enigmatic Calocaerus Revolt with Maria Castello!
In this episode, Marcus Aurelius Anderson discusses the popular advice 'never meet your heroes' and why he believes it is overly simplistic and often misleading. Drawing from his own experiences as a leadership coach, author, and speaker, Marcus shares the lessons he learned from meeting his heroes, such as the co-founder of Quest Nutrition, Stephen Pressfield, and other prominent entrepreneurs. He emphasizes the importance of seeing heroes as humans, not placing them on pedestals, and understanding that success requires hard work, not handouts. Marcus provides actionable advice on how to approach meeting your heroes and underscores the need for focused action and dedication to achieve personal success. Marcus Elyot - 30 Puzzle Design Lessons Another YT video - Frankly obscenely wide ranging and deep (and I mean deep, like, Oceangate deep) on puzzle design. Mairi Uketu Strange Pictures AN ACTUAL BOOK. ACTUAL PROPER CULTURE. THANK YOU MAIRI, THANK YOU. Oh wait it's by a Youtuber. However, a Youtuber that wrote a book that Mairi polished off in a single sitting. And, frankly (my word of the day), I have never met someone as easily distracted so, hats off Uketu. You broke Mairi. Recommendations summarised by the editor, Jon; who was, by the end, so utterly enraged by having this entire set of show notes accidentally deleted that he really went off on one and then began writing about himself in the third person. What a guy.

Episode OverviewThis week, I consider the Stoic philosophy of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations and Epictetus' Enchiridion, part of Ted Gioia's Humanities List (link below!). Moving from Greek dramas to 2nd-century Roman Stoics, we first talk about the move from Greek lit to Roman, how the mindset and history will impact what we read. I cover Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus in depth, mention Admiral Stockdale (a modern Stoic) and end the episode with Rudyard Kipling's poem "If." Marcus Aurelius' MeditationsMeditations, the private journal of a Roman emperor, emphasizes self-focus, humility, and inner peace. Key takeaways include: Focus on your own mind and skills, not others' actions or opinions. Embrace nature to cultivate curiosity and appreciation for the world. Accept life's brevity and smallness, acting virtuously without expecting rewards. Find peace within, not in external escapes like vacation homes. Hold pleasures loosely to achieve contentment in the present moment.I note the surprising modernity of Aurelius' advice but question its contradictions, like the futility of life versus the call to virtue.Epictetus' EnchiridionEpictetus, a former slave turned philosopher, offers a direct, practical guide in The Enchiridion. I prefer Epictetus' straightforward style, finding it more relatable than Aurelius' introspections. Highlights include: Distinguish what harms the body from what affects the will—Epictetus' own lameness adds poignancy to this teaching. Know your limits and operate fully within them, committing wholeheartedly to your purpose. Avoid excess in speech, laughter, or indulgence, embracing simplicity.Consider the parallels to Biblical teachings like Colossians 3:17.Reflections and ChallengesI don't love Stoicism, as I think it sacrifices deep love and beauty. But there's no doubt that its ideals have a place in society--Stockdale and Kipling both reflect that. Translation struggles (George Long's arcane 1877 version versus Gregory Hays' readable Meditations) and time management issues due to travel delayed this week's reading. Classical music (Haydn's Symphonies 45, 94, and 104) enriched the experience, though I skipped the art. What's NextNext week, I explore Suetonius' Twelve Caesars with Mozart's symphonies and Italian art by Botticelli and Caravaggio. Phoenix Aurelius is a modern day alchemist & founder of the Phoenix Aurelius Research Center [specializing in spagyric medicine] tucked away in the mountains of Webster County, West Virginia. On this esoteric excursion into the mind of an alchemist, we open on the four dimensions of our multi-dimensional reality: the physical, the astral, the causal, and the spiritual. From there we delve into the history and teachings of Paracelsus, the 16th-century alchemist & physician, exploring topics such as: fire-water-air-earth; sulfur-mercury-salt as the soul-spirit-body of any material; life-death-rebirth and reaching immortality in the laboratory; the difference between herbalism & spagyria; and the historical alchemists' fixation on generating gold. Phoenix then describes in vivid detail the recipe for creating the legendary Philosopher's Stone, that if ingested, according to lore, brings everlasting life! Following is a wild story about a FBI phone call & the death of a fellow alchemist. After thoughts & impressions on past-lives, dwarves, and Carl Jung's alchemical psychology, Phoenix shares a potent story about his near-death experiences as a kid with lucid visions of ancestors & the lobby of heaven. Pop open your bubbling lab flask & take a huge swig of this mind-bending sonic elixir!
