    Ivy Insights

The Our True Crime Podcast is an absolute gem in the world of true crime podcasts. As someone who has always struggled to focus on podcasts, this show has completely changed my perspective. I discovered it during a bout of insomnia and now find myself listening to their episodes every night as part of my self-care routine. This podcast has truly become like family to me, providing comfort and stress relief during difficult times.

One of the best aspects of The Our True Crime Podcast is the genuine passion and fascination that both hosts, Cam and Jen, have for true crime. It's clear that they deeply care about sharing these stories with their listeners and they go above and beyond to provide well-researched and detailed accounts of each case. Their humor adds a delightful touch to the show, making it engaging and enjoyable to listen to. Additionally, I appreciate the fact that they prioritize diving right into the crime story before any announcements, allowing listeners to be immediately immersed in the content.

Another great aspect of this podcast is the hosts' likability and relatability. Cam and Jen's banter feels like sitting down with friends and having a conversation. They are down-to-earth, compassionate, and inject their own personal touches throughout each episode without detracting from the true crime narrative. Furthermore, their Midwest accents are charming and easy on the ears for international listeners like myself.

As for any potential downsides of The Our True Crime Podcast, it's hard to pinpoint any major flaws. However, some may argue that occasional use of slang or repetitive phrases like "whatever" can be off-putting or distracting. Nevertheless, I find these quirks endearing rather than problematic.

In conclusion, The Our True Crime Podcast is an exceptional true crime podcast that deserves all the praise it receives. With passionate hosts who strike a perfect balance between informative storytelling and lighthearted banter, this show stands out among others in its genre. It has become an essential part of my daily routine, providing entertainment and a sense of connection. I cannot recommend The Our True Crime Podcast enough to fellow true crime enthusiasts.

    315. Horror in St. Louis Hills: Ellen Dooling and Gary Consolino

The neighborhood of St. Louis Hills was quiet that evening in November 1980. The leaves were turning as winter was making its way in. John Dooling was suddenly jolted awake by a loud sound. Was it A scream? Or had he imagined it? He immediately thought of his 18-year-old daughter, Ellen. Ellen had gone on a date that night. She should have been home by now. John threw off the covers and moved to the window, peeling back the curtain. That's when he saw a blue Oldsmobile Cutlass idling in front of the house. The car wasn't moving. He grabbed his robe and stepped outside. Something was wrong. It was Ellen; she was slumped over in the car.John yanked the door open when he saw her face. He screamed so loudly that it would surely wake the neighbors in the 6200 block of Walsh Street. Ellen Dooling and her date, 20-year-old Gary Consolino, never left the car alive. They had been shot—executed—right there in front of her parents' home. There were no signs of a struggle. No shattered glass. There are no desperate claw marks on the door handles. The car hadn't been ransacked. Their wallets and jewelry remained untouched. This crime should have been solved so easily, but it was not.Justice should have brought at least some comfort to both of their families, but it did not.Join Jen and Cam on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled ‘Horror in St. Louis Hills: Ellen Dooling and Gary Consolino.'Listener discretion by our bestie @octoberpodVHSMusic is by our other bestie who is also our editor @theinkypawprintSources:https://www.spreaker.com/episode/218-blame-it-on-the-game-mary-towey--55288137https://muckrack.com/bob-cyphers/articleshttps://www.firstalert4.com/video/2022/01/21/someone-knows-something-gary-consolino-ellen-dooling-cold-case-that-haunts-st-louis/https://www.newspapers.com/article/31437268/the-murders-of-ellen-jean-dooling-and/https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/phcd5m/41_years_later_the_murders_of_gary_consolino_and/https://twitter.com/kmov/status/1432374841693425667https://www.firstalert4.com/2022/01/21/horror-st-louis-hills-gary-consolino-ellen-dooling-murders-that-shook-city/https://www.firstalert4.com/news/st-louis-unsolved/https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/mother-of-murder-victim-makes-plea-for-help-in-cold-case/63-368399891https://www.newspapers.com/article/30024498/ellen_dooling_and_gary_consolino/

It was a brisk autumn night in October 1977 when two best friends, Christine Eadie and Helen Scott, stepped into Edinburgh's World's End Pub for what should have been a carefree night of drinks and laughter. Just seventeen years old, they were out to blow off steam, pub-hop, and soak in the city's energy. But as the night drew to a close, a chance encounter changed everything. On their way out, the girls struck up a casual conversation with two men—a chat that lasted no more than 25 minutes. Moments later, Christine and Helen disappeared into the night. They were never seen alive again. That ordinary pub, on that ordinary night, would be etched into Scotland's darkest history—The World's End Pub forever linked to their final steps. Like Whitechapel in the time of Jack the Ripper, or the Ford Theatre on the night Lincoln fell, The World's End would become a place where tragedy and terror collide. What happened next would haunt a nation—and ignite one of Scotland's most chilling manhunts.Join Jen and Cam on this episode entitled 'Double Jeopardy at the World's End: Scotland's Angus Sinclair."Listener discretion is by @octoberpodVHSResearched and written by Lauretta Allen, as well as myself.Executive Producers @theinkypawprintSources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_End_Murdershttps://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-47524945 https://youtu.be/dNMTHwOrQK0?si=DbcL4bufbpxU60UShttps://youtu.be/5WcrDOim1Rw?si=C7jsagwsgwOKHwd0https://youtu.be/EoHghw36gpk?si=0n6DhReS29po3ZLKhttps://murderpedia.org/male.S/s/sinclair-angus.htmhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/1047423638/?match=1&clipping_id=172210762https://www.newspapers.com/image/1047422373/match=1&terms=%22Catherine%20Reehillhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/1047422301/?match=1&clipping_id=172210941https://www.newspapers.com/image/1047424653/?match=1&clipping_id=172211034https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048695564/?match=1&clipping_id=172211313https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048838948/?match=1&clipping_id=172211394https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048780956/?match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048767078/?match=1&clipping_id=172211704https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048724298/?match=1&clipping_id=172211867https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048736127/?match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048732134/?match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048647935/?match=1&clipping_id=172212169https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048590172/?match=1&clipping_id=172212245https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048722237/?match=1&clipping_id=172212760https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048793994/?match=1&clipping_id=172212787https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048792299/?match=1&clipping_id=172212838https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048651639/?match=1&c

In 1993, MTV aired a music video for the song “Runaway Train” by Soul Asylum. In the video, names and photographs of real missing people were featured.  In that music video, the picture of fifteen-year-old Vicky Hamilton is displayed just long enough to burn the image of the girl with the short bob haircut into your mind. When the video was made, Vicky had been missing from her family in Scotland for two years. A little while later in the video, there is another photograph of a girl, Dinah McNicol, an 18-year-old from Essex, in the UK, who had just finished her A-level exams. When the Soul Asylum video was made, Dinah had also been missing for two years. Aside from the fact that both girls went missing six months apart in the same year, and aside from the fact that they both appeared in the same music video, two other things connected these girls. They had both been murdered by the same man. And they both shared the same grave.Join Jen and Cam as we discuss the chilling case of Peter Tobin, one of the UK's most depraved serial killers. If you listen to the podcast, you know a thing or two about crime. You may like the following questions: Why did they do it? How did they do it? Why this victim and not someone else? No matter why you listen, I bet you can remember a case from childhood that left a mark, changed how you looked at humanity, or made you lose your innocence. For me, this is that story. I had just turned 11 years old and I still remember the look of shock on my mother's face when she was talking about this. The call came through just before dawn on Thursday, October 23, 1980. A dispatcher's voice crackled over the radio, summoning officers and an ambulance to Pope's Cafeteria at 12450 Manchester Road, inside West County Center in Des Peres, Missouri. If you are local, you may call it the White Dove, at least we did growing up. When officers arrived, they were met with a small crowd of employees, still in their uniforms, visibly shaken. Some clung to each other for support, their faces pale with shock as they pointed officers toward the inside of the restaurant. Lawrencia Bembenek's beauty was both a blessing and a curse. To some, it was a key that unlocked doors. But to others, it was the perfect tool for shaping a narrative—a narrative that framed her as a modern-day femme fatale. The press depicted her as “a former Playboy bunny,” yet Laurie had worked only three weeks as a waitress at the Lake Geneva Playboy Club and never posed for the magazine in her birthday suit. The closest she came to being a centerfold was fully clothed in a Schlitz beer calendar. This story was eaten up by the public and often distorted by the media. There were public rallies cheering her on with cries of “Run, Bambi, Run,” the name the press gave her and the name she hated. People could not get enough of this case, which brings me to the whole reason I decided to cover it today, as it may sound a bit familiar to another case in the headlines today. The night was bitter that October night, but then came the fire. An all-consuming inferno that lit up the quiet streets of Prairie Village.  In minutes, the Farrar home — the suburban dream home belonging to two respected doctors, Michael Farrar and Deborah Green, and their three children, Timothy, Kate, and Kelly — was consumed by flames. The firefighters arrived and battled the blaze, but it was too little, too late. Two people made it out. The rest… didn't. What was left behind wasn't just a burned-out house — it was ground zero for a waking nightmare. As dawn broke and the smoke cleared, investigators searched what was left of the family's home. They were expecting tragedy. What they weren't expecting was malice. Because beneath the ashes, something darker began to take shape—something deliberate. This wasn't an accident. It was murder.Join Cam and Jen on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast ‘Burning Betrayal: The Murders of Tim and Kelly Farrar.'Listener discretion by @octoberpodVHSAll music by our EP @theinkypawprintSources:https://mail.murderpedia.org/female.G/g/green-debora.htmhttps://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article278565144.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/Bitter-Harvest-Womans-Mothers-Sacrifice/dp/0684810476https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1477435/https://caselaw.findlaw.com/court/ks-supreme-court/1285263.htmlhttps://www.cjonline.com/story/news/politics/state/2014/12/21/mother-seeks-resentencing-deadly-arson-fire/16645032007/https://forensicfilesnow.com/index.php/2022/06/14/dr-debora-green-tennis-and-insanity/https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueCrimeDiscussion/comments/1h03c63/female_family_annihilators/https://loriajohnston.medium.com/the-unthinkable-crimes-of-dr-debora-green-2257a5dcd9a3https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAvb4qDE9Iohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfnWaYbZQLkhttp://unknownmisandry.blogspot.com/2020/05/debora-green-serial-family-annihilator.htmlhttps://ground.news/article/michael-farrar-whose-ex-wife-served-him-poison-and-killed-2-kids-in-95-fire-dies-at-68

In the early hours of July 17, 1997, Denise Wolff, 39, had just finished her overnight shift as a card dealer at the President Casino on the Admiral. It had been a good night, and Denise, feeling optimistic, climbed into her brand-new Chrysler Cirrus LX. She had a new job, a new car, and even a new man in her life. Things were finally looking up for her. On her way home, Denise stopped at a drive-thru on Hampton Avenue to grab a bite before returning to her house on Bancroft Avenue. The streets were quiet at this time which was good since South St. Louis had a predator, known as the South Side Rapist, who had been lurking in the area. Ever cautious, Denise had installed a motion-activated floodlight near her driveway, ensuring she would be seen if anyone approached. But tonight, something felt different. Denise usually pulled straight into her garage, never exposing herself to the darkened street. But tonight, she parked her car on the street. Today, we are going back in time; let's rewind the clock to 1969, the year the world got slightly brighter—because Jen and I came into being. But hold on tight because we're about to dive into the scene's heart. A place where the music's alive, the air's thick with good vibes, and the soul just flows. We're talking about The Scene, man.  Now we meet Steve Paul, the cool cat that operates The Scene, and let me tell ya, this joint on West 46th Street in the Big Apple is where at. Every night, you'll find the grooviest cats in town—hippies, musicians, artists, and just free spirits all jammin' out together, sharing a little bit of magic, and yeah, passing around that sweet, sweet devil's lettuce.By February 2003, the glory days of the once vibrant nightlife hub and gritty hustle had long since faded into the past. The building's remaining tenants—sex workers, drug users, and the forgotten souls of the neighborhood kept a few apartments in the building. The storefronts, once home to The Scene, had cycled through several different faces since its closure: a pornographic video shop, a seedy dive bar, and now, a restaurant eager to convert the basement into a walk-in freezer. Demolition made way for a shiny new Riu Hotel, which was not completed until 2016. On February 10th, construction workers stumbled upon something strange while tearing down what was left. Behind an aging coal furnace in the basement, they noticed a raised concrete slab six feet wide, five feet long, and about a foot high. One worker took a sledgehammer and struck the slab. Once he was inside, a human skull rolled out of its resting place.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘Buried for Decades: Discovery of Midtown Jane Doe.'Listener Discretion is by @octoberpodVHSAll music is by our editor @theinkypawprintSources:https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/true-crime-mystery-murder-the-scene-new-york-1235156741/https://people.com/midtown-jane-doe-new-york-woman-identified-patricia-kathleen-mcglone-8641422https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=434347589384178&id=100064771266307https://nypost.com/2024/04/28/us-news/midtown-jane-doe-finally-idd-20-years-after-remains-found-cemented-in-former-nyc-hot-spot/https://vocal.media/criminal/midtown-jane-doe-identified-after-50-years-using-dnahttps://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/1cfjvaq/midtown_jane_doe_2003_identified_as_16yearold/https://www.facebook.com/FOX5NY/videos/who-was-midtown-jane-doe/3012225785594168/https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/04/30/patricia-kathleen-mcglone-midtown-jane-doe-cold-case/73515200007/https://www.cbsnews.com/news/patricia-mcglone-midtown-jane-doe-murder-victim-identified-cold-case-dna-911-victim-nypd/https://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=AwrFY0w.4Npn3Gwj.gYPxQt.;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny/RV=2/RE=1742426302/RO=10/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.cnn.com%2f2024%2f05%2f01%2fus%2fmidtown-jane-doe-death-ring-cec%2findex.html/RK=2/RS=EJ_.ELaYzd69r4SyrsnD98NHxmk-https://www.doenetwork.org/closed/articles/337UFNY_article.pdf

It is November 6th, 1990. The air was crisp, the Belt Parkway humming with the usual New York traffic. Among the cars was Eddie Lino—an old-school Gambino enforcer, a man whose name carried weight in the city's underworld. He'd spent years dodging the law. But this time, the flashing red and blue lights in his rearview weren't just another routine hassle. As the unmarked car closed in, Lino must've felt it—something was off. Before he could react, gunfire rang out. The ambush was clean and professional in a city where power shifts with a trigger pull; Eddie Lino's time was up. For a man who had made a living by the gun, there were only two ways out: a prison cell or a body bag. Lino avoided the first. And he paid his dues in full on that Brooklyn highway in 1992. Dirty cops and the mob—nothing new in New York. But this case? This was different. Two high-ranking NYPD detectives weren't just looking the other way; they worked for the Lucchese crime family, pulling jobs and covering tracks for over a decade. They didn't just take bribes—they were on the payroll.Join Cam and Jen on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled ‘Mafia's Finest: Stephen Caracappa and Louis Eppolito.'Listener discretion by @octoberpodVHSMusic is by our editor @theinkypawprintSources:Mafia Cops Interview - Louis Eppolito on the Sally Jesse Raphael showhttps://www.amazon.com/Mafia-Cop-Lou-Eppolito/dp/1416517014http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/mafia-cops-louis-eppolito-stephen-caracappa-sentenced-life-prison-article-1.366777https://www.justice.gov/archive/usao/nye/pr/2009/2009mar06b.htmlhttps://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/15ygama/louis_eppolito_on_sally_jesse_raphael_1992/https://nypost.com/2005/07/07/victims-mom-fingered-mafia-cop-from-tv-talk-show/https://www.justice.gov/archive/usao/nye/pr/2005/2005mar10.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/07/nyregion/louis-eppolito-dead.htmlhttps://www.silive.com/news/2017/04/report_mob_cop_with_staten_isl.htmlhttps://web.archive.org/web/20170412190201/http://gothamist.com/2017/04/12/nypd_cop_turned_mafia_hitman_dies_i.phphttps://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-2nd-circuit/1532561.htmlhttps://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/ny-mafia-cop-louis-eppolito-dead-20191105-55tnkoq4f5amvm5555qcp3fb34-story.htmlhttps://www.justice.gov/archive/usao/nye/pr/2009/2009mar06b.htmlhttp://www.ipsn.org/indictments/caracappa_indictment/caracappa_indictment_newest.htmhttps://web.archive.org/web/20060111191537/https://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/01/05/60minutes/main1180833.shtmlhttp://www.ipsn.org/indictments/caracappa_indictment/caracappa_indictment_newest.htm

The night of April 19, 1997, was like any other Saturday at Tony's Pizza in Hardyston, New Jersey. The dinner rush had come and gone, and as the clock neared 10:45 p.m., Jeremy Giordano,  22, and Giorgio Gallara,  25, prepared to call it a night. But first, there was one last order to deliver—two pizzas bound for 196 Scott Road. A routine run. A simple transaction. They had no idea they were driving straight into an ambush. As Giordano pulled up to the curb, a car sat waiting in the darkness. Gallara, the restaurant's owner, rolled down the passenger-side window and called out, “Sixteen-fifty,” expecting a quick cash exchange. But instead of a wallet, one of the waiting men reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol. The first shot shattered the quiet night. Then another. And another. The gunman emptied the chamber. His accomplice, unwilling to be a spectator, drew his weapon and joined in. Shots ripped through metal and glass, through the inside of the vehicle. The car lurched forward, rolling off the road before finally coming to a stop, its frame riddled with bullet holes. Nestled in the small, unassuming town of Stella, Missouri, in the heart of the Ozarks, nine-year-old Rowan Ford lived a life like any kid would. She shared a modest home in Newton County with her mother, Colleen Munson, and her stepfather, David Spears. 25-year-old David Spears had a long-standing friendship with 32-year-old Christopher Collings, a man who wasn't family by blood but had become close to the family over the years. Collings moved into the Spears household during the summer of 2007, living in the basement and being looked up to by the young Rowan, who fondly called him “Uncle Chris.” But by late October, Collings left the Spears home and relocated to a farm in Wheaton, Missouri, where he had a trailer parked on the property.  On the chilly evening of November 2, 2007, Nathan Mahurin, another friend of both Spears and Collings, joined the two men at the Wheaton farm. The trio stopped at a local liquor store to stock up on malt liquor before returning to Spear's home to drink and play pool. The following morning, November 3, her mother, Colleen, returned from her shift around 9:00 a.m. to find Rowan missing. At first, she assumed her daughter was somewhere in the house, but after a frantic search, she realized Rowan was gone. Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode, ' Snatched As She Slept: Rowan Ford.'Listener discretion is by @octoberpodVHSMusic is by our EP @theinkypawprintSources:https://caselaw.findlaw.com/court/mo-supreme-court/1676021.htmlhttps://casetext.com/case/collings-v-state-2https://www.ozarksfirst.com/crimetraveler/crime-traveler-what-happened-to-rowan-ford/https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/12/03/christopher-collings-execution-missouri-rowan-ford/76744499007/https://www.cbsnews.com/news/christopher-collings-missouri-execution-rowan-ford-murder/https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/crime/missouri-execution-christopher-collings-rape-murder-b2658052.htmlhttps://krcgtv.com/news/local/parson-state-of-missouri-will-execute-man-convicted-of-rape-murder-of-nine-year-old-girlhttps://www.themirror.com/news/us-news/breaking-death-row-inmate-christopher-838753https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna21708153https://www.joplinglobe.com/news/local_news/videotape-confession-presented-in-rowan-ford-case/article_16eca7b2-73ee-519c-8000-2d3ed82751c9.htmlhttps://www.joplinglobe.com/news/local_news/chris-collings-father-no-matter-what-happens-i-love-my-son/article_e10bdd91-c2d5-5fa5-ad47-fb1b9d65fd00.htmlhttps://www.cbsnews.com/news/christopher-collings-missouri-execution-rowan-ford-murder/https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/dec/02/missouri-execution-christopher-collingshttps://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/12/02/christopher-collings-execution-rowan-ford-missouri/76578296007/https://www.supremecourt.gov/search.aspx?filename=/docket/docketfiles/html/public/23-6703.htmlhttps://mdcp.nwaonline.com/news/2012/oct/04/murder-charge-dropped-20121004/https://fox4kc.com/news/national/ap-us-news/ap-missouri-man-facing-execution-in-the-sexual-assault-and-strangling-of-a-9-year-old-girl/https://www.fourstateshomepage.com/news/crime/murder-victims-step-father-where-is-he-now/https://www.news-leader.com/story/news/local/ozarks/2024/12/02/missouri-executing-christopher-collings-rape-murder-rowan-ford/76711350007/https://www.ky3.com/2025/01/14/missouri-lawmakers-demand-firing-rowan-fords-step-father-public-defenders-office/

It was a cold November evening on the 26th, 2004, in Van Buren, Missouri, when the events that would soon unravel in the small, unsuspecting town began to take shape. Two men, Lance Shockley and his sister-in-law's fiancé, Jeffrey Bayless, embarked on an innocent enough drive in Bayless' truck. But as they made their way, something went wrong. Under Shockley's control, the vehicle careened off the road, plunging into a ditch. But it wasn't the crash that would raise the most questions—it was what happened afterward that would haunt everyone involved. As the investigation unfolded under Highway Patrol Sergeant Carl DeWayne Graham, Jr., the small town would see another person lose their life. Sam and Margaret Kastanis met while playing in a band and were married in 1987. When the children came along, they quit the band to focus on family. Margaret said that even after a decade of marriage, she still often had butterflies in her stomach when she looked at her husband.  The couple had three beautiful children: Melissa, 11, Clinton, 9, and Christine, 6. The neighbors described the family as idyllic.Margaret became severely ill with the Epstein-Barr virus and had been out of commission for more than a month. Sam eventually had to take time off from work to stay home with her and the children because she had no energy to care for them. By November 17th, 1991, Sam had been off work for several weeks, and Margaret was frustrated she wasn't getting better. The couple recently put their house up for sale and received a bid. Now, it looked like they would be moving and buying a bigger and better house during the holiday season, yet Margaret was still not fully recovered. Add to this the fact that Margaret had made friends with a mentally unstable woman in the neighborhood and that she, too, had recently shown signs of paranoia. It became evident to some that the Kastanis family was beginning to unravel. But nobody who knew the couple could have known that four of the five members of the Kastanis family would never make it to Thanksgiving. Listener warning: this case is extremely disturbing. It is our final day of the 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. In May 1981, on the outskirts of Chicago, a hotel maid went to work like she did every day. For the most part, the day was uneventful, except when she noticed a horrible smell. The Moonlit Hotel wasn't exactly a five-star place to stay. It was known as a place for drug deals and quick sex. Even so, the maid had never noticed a smell like this before. This was something new. And all day long, she tried to find the source of the stench but never found it. She returned to work the next day, and the smell was even worse.  It is a medical fact that women have a better sense of smell than men. They are also better at identifying a specific odor. And what the maid smelled that day was death. Her gut told her that something was dead on the hotel premises, but no matter how much she looked for the source, she couldn't find it. The stench was making it almost impossible to work. Finally, she went to the hotel manager, who said that, yeah, now that she mentioned it, he smelled something, too. She told him that she'd already checked all the rooms, so the manager began to search the grounds. The manager came upon a gruesome discovery in an empty field behind the hotel. This would not be the final victim, but the biggest shock was yet to come. Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘The Personification of Evil: The Chicago Ripper Crew.'A huge thank you to Sleep Creme for sponsoring this episode. Here is day 11 of the 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. After the American Civil War, the U.S. government decided it would be delightful to shuffle the Osage Indians from Labette County, Kansas, to what would soon be the state of Oklahoma—because who doesn't love a good game of human chess? As they cleared the land, they rolled out the red carpet for homesteaders, luring them in with shiny promises of opportunity. By October 1870, five families of spiritualists—because obviously, that's who you want on the frontier—decided to stake their claim on this “untamed paradise.” As noted by the proclamation issued on May 17, 1873, this was far from paradise for many travelers. Several atrocious murders have been recently committed in Labette County, Kansas.Join Jen and Cam on this episode entitled ‘Trail of Terror: The Bloody Benders and Their House of Death.'Listener discretion by @octoberpodVHSAll music by our executive producer and editor @theinkypawprintSources:https://blogs.loc.gov/headlinesandheroes/2024/10/bloody-benders/https://www.aetv.com/real-crime/bloody-bendershttps://www.kctv5.com/2024/07/04/kansas-bloody-benders-digging-clues-century-old-murders/https://www.legendsofamerica.com/ks-benders/https://www.ksn.com/news/crime/ku-researchers-dig-deeper-into-the-bloody-benders-site/https://www.humanitieskansas.org/get-involved/kansas-stories/people/true-crime-in-kansas-the-mystery-of-the-bendershttps://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/sale-kansas-land-where-bloody-benders-committed-their-crimes-180974121/https://open.spotify.com/episode/13godpkiaP4Ile72PYAIL5https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Benders

We are on day ten of the 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. On a freezing cold night in December of 1977, two women in their mid-thirties were leaving the Forker's Café at 64 Union Street in Newark, Ohio. At 2:30 a.m., Joyce Vermillion, a barmaid at the café, and Karen Dodrill (dod-rill), a patron and friend of Joyce's, were preparing to call it a night. Karen had been out celebrating her birthday and had offered to give her friend Joyce a ride home. Since it was minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit, Karen went out to warm up her car first and was headed back into the bar when she was gunned down by a person waiting in the bushes.  Since there was a homemade silencer on the gun, Joyce had no warning of any danger and walked out of the building and was shot and killed as well. (Some sources say they were walking across the parking lot when they were gunned down.) When Joyce failed to return home from work, her husband notified the police. It is day 9 of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. On a sweltering June 26, 1957, Margaret Harold, a vibrant young woman, and her boyfriend, a U.S. Army sergeant, were enjoying a rare weekend getaway. As they were making their way, a green Chrysler came barreling toward them. Without warning, the car swerved, forcing them off the road. The driver, a tall, dark-haired man, stepped out with a sinister calmness. He approached their vehicle with a wicked look in his eyes. The stranger demanded that they roll down their window as he brandished a nickel-plated .38 revolver. At first, the man demanded money and then cigarettes. When the couple did not have anything to give him, he shot Margaret point-blank in the face. The horrified soldier, paralyzed by shock, fled the scene, racing through the rural fields that surrounded him. Finally, he reached a farmhouse, where he managed to call the police, relaying the horror he had just witnessed. The sergeant provided a clear description of the man who had attacked them—a man with an average build and somewhat tall stature, marked by dark hair and a clean-shaven face. Before police could find the stranger, he would do a lot more damage. Join Cam and Jen on this episode entitled “The Sex Beast: Melvin Rees.”Listener discretion by @octoberpodVHSAll music is by our executive producer and editor @theinkypawprintSources:https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/a-serial-killer-preys-upon-a-woman-out-for-a-drivehttps://law.justia.com/cases/federal/district-courts/FSupp/193/849/1733703/https://www.facebook.com/baileysarian1/videos/the-chilling-story-of-melvin-rees/1122503025475063/https://murderpedia.org/male.R/r/rees-melvin.htmhttps://www.crimelibrary.org/serial_killers/predators/melvin_rees/13.htmlhttps://www.sharda.ac.in/apply/ed/4c000655-Ay9X2VWw1xs.htmlhttps://www.crimelibrary.org/serial_killers/predators/melvin_rees/12.htmlhttps://www.tamucc.edu/online/video/video-kMVK9ybIbWB.html

It was a partly cloudy morning in Somers, Connecticut, and the day would be warm and pleasant. At 6:00 a.m., Michael had oatmeal for breakfast, then watched television and read the newspaper. After reading for a while, he received communion from a Catholic priest. The day was going well—pretty typical for him, actually. He visited with family and friends in the afternoon for a few hours. The only thing unusual about Michael's dinner of turkey a la king, rice, fruit, mixed vegetables, and white bread was that it would be his last because, a few hours later, Michael Ross was executed by the state of Connecticut. It was the first execution in the state of Connecticut since Joseph “Mad Dog” Taborsky was electrocuted in 1960. Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled 'The Roadside Strangler: Michael Bruce Ross.'Thank you to our team:Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from Octoberpod AMExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky PawprintSources:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mAMXqN0Eaw (If you watch or listen to one thing on Michael Ross, watch this one. On Sunday, February 16, 1997, around 9:45 to 10:00 a.m., an employee arrived at Captain D's restaurant on Lebanon Road in Donelson, Tennessee, ready to start another routine day. But as he approached the establishment, an unsettling sight greeted him: the doors were firmly locked, which should not have been the case since two other employees were scheduled to open earlier.  He went to a neighboring restaurant to call Captain D's, and when he received a busy signal, he felt relief. After a few minutes, he tried again, but the phone continued to ring this time. He knew something was wrong. Concerned for his colleagues, he contacted another employee whose father served as a Metro police officer. When the employee's father arrived at the scene, they entered the restaurant between 11 a.m. and noon. What they found was shocking.  In an instant, the routine of a Sunday morning was replaced by an unspeakable tragedy, and the community would soon grapple with the aftermath of this horrific crime. Sadly, this was just the beginning. Join Cam and Jen of Our True Crime Podcast on the episode “The Fast Food Murders: Paul Reid.”Listener discretion by @octoberpodVHSAll music is by our editor and executive producer @theinkypawprintSources:https://law.justia.com/cases/tennessee/court-of-criminal-appeals/2001/m1999-00803-cca-r3-dd.htmlhttps://www.yahoo.com/news/paul-dennis-reid-never-confessed-230942209.htmlhttps://www.reddit.com/r/serialkillers/comments/s8rviv/does_anyone_on_here_know_about_paul_dennis_reid/https://www.tba.org/journal/the-murders-of-paul-dennis-reid-jrhttps://web.archive.org/web/20060616222357/http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizations/ncadp/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=3867https://www.aetv.com/real-crime/nashville-serial-killer-paul-dennis-reidhttps://web.archive.org/web/20070127141638/http://chattanoogan.com/articles/article_98859.asphttps://www.nashvillescene.com/news/convicted-mass-murderer-paul-dennis-reid-pronounced-dead/article_782aac80-7223-594f-b2ac-be4105f56968.htmlhttps://tubitv.com/tv-shows/320079/s02-e05-the-fast-food-killerhttps://web.archive.org/web/20110527105333/http://www.kwtx.com/news/headlines/4809806.htmlhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY22n_y5Msghttps://www.wbir.com/article/news/tennessee-mass-murderer-paul-dennis-reid-dead/51-95431900

It is day six of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas, and we are headed to Germany. After World War II, Germany was divided into four Allied occupation zones, with the Soviet Union controlling East Germany and East Berlin, while the United States, France, and the U.K. managed Western Germany and West Berlin. By 1949, Europe had transformed dramatically, symbolized by the creation of two Germanies. Initially, movement between the two regions was unrestricted, but as East Germans fled westward in droves, the border was sealed in 1961, culminating in the Berlin Wall, a defining emblem of the Cold War.  In Plauen, East Germany, young Volker Eckert grew up in a Communist city near the Czech border. As a child, Volker developed a fixation on hair, playing with his sister's dolls and mother's wigs, which sparked sexual fantasies he kept secret. By age 14, his obsession with hair escalated into violence. On May 7, 1974, he strangled his classmate Sylvia Unterdörfel in her home under the pretense of needing help with homework, driven by an uncontrollable urge to feel her hair. Fearing exposure, he killed her and staged her death as a suicide. Sadly, Sylvia would not be his only victim. In fact, there would be many more. Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘The Polaroid Killer: Volker Eckert.'A huge thank you to Sleep Creme for sponsoring this episode. For the fifth day of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas, we are headed north to Anchorage, Alaska, where we meet 52-year-old Mindy Schloss. Mindy had moved to Anchorage back in the 1980s by accident. Mindy came for a visit and never left. Mindy worked as a nurse practitioner in Fairbanks' psychiatric department. The commute from Anchorage to Fairbanks was a long one-hour flight, but Mindy had to make the trip twice a month. Her good friend Gerri would care for her cat Willy while she was gone working.  The friends would meet up before Mindy left for work, so when Gerri didn't hear from Mindy, she called and left a message with Mindy checking in, but Mindy did not return the call, which was unlike Mindy. “Maybe she is just busy' her friend thought. Mindy's other friend, Bob Conway, her on-again and off-again boyfriend, reached out to Mindy as well, and when he could not leave a voicemail due to a full mailbox, he knew something was wrong. Bob called Gerri to inquire if she had heard from Mindy. When Gerri said no, they both felt something was wrong. Join Cam and Jen of Our True Crime Podcast on the episode “Cold Blooded Killer: Joshua Wade.”Listener Discretion is by @octoberpodVHSAll music is courtesy of our executive producer @theinkypawprintSources:https://alaskapublic.org/2024/06/21/alaska-serial-killer-joshua-wade-dies-in-indiana-prison/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joshua_Wadehttps://apnews.com/article/alaska-serial-killer-dies-prison-2e292616a49b5cd49eabb2f3256fd412https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/anchorage/news/convicted-killer-joshua-wade-claims-responsibilty-for-additional-murdershttps://www.oxygen.com/fatal-frontier-evil-in-alaska/crime-news/serial-killer-joshua-wade-is-found-dead-prisonhttps://archive.today/20220506153526/https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sdut-alaska-man-sentenced-to-99-years-in-nurses-murder-2010feb17-story.htmlhttps://archive.today/20210625194748/https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/article/authorities-joshua-wade-admits-3-additional-killings-0/2014/06/20/https://archive.ph/20220506153526/https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sdut-alaska-man-sentenced-to-99-years-in-nurses-murder-2010feb17-story.html#selection-2173.1-2201.114https://archive.ph/20210625194748/https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/article/authorities-Joshuaua-wade-admits-3-additional-killings-0/2014/06/20/https://archive.ph/20161127222923/https://www.adn.com/alaska-life/we-alaskans/2016/11/27/exceptional-account-traces-path-of-alaska-serial-killer-Joshuaua-wade/

It is day four of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas, and we are headed to the Midwest. Every city has trouble with crime. Just watch the news for an hour, and it's pretty evident that violence occurs even in small communities, no matter how many disbelieving residents claim otherwise.  However, some cities statistically have a higher crime rate than others, and many reasons and factors contribute to that. According to the U.S. News Real Estate website, Kansas City, Kansas, located in the middle of the United States, has a slightly higher crime rate than the national average. In 2001, Kansas City had 10,909 violent crimes. Among those were 92 murders, 945 rapes, 7,449 assaults and 2,423 robberies. But, oddly enough, there was no category for “Death by Vampire Cannibal.”Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘The Kansas City Vampire: Marc Sappington Day.'Thank you to our team:Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from Octoberpod AMExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky Paw PrintSources:https://youtube/Hv3ISDg811U?si=DtrujPt8oYKO-Lcwhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Sappingtonhttps://murderpedia.org/male.S/s/sappington-marc.htmhttps://www.crimelibrary.org/serial_killers/weird/sappington/1.htmlhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/686892606/?match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/686883369/match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/686887661/?match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/686895681/match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/686894452/?match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1977/06/11/schizophrenic-episodes-linked-to-the-drug-pcp/647db04d-f0c2-4a1e-aee5-2cdc458aa203/https://www.newspapers.com/image/686817896/?match=1&terms=David%20Mashakhttps://caselaw.findlaw.com/court/ks-supreme-court/1066394.htmlhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/687193968/?match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/687337700/?terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/688165754/?match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/688165754/?match=1&terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/688172334/?terms=%22Marc%20Sappington%22https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWDDcDGiGaA&ab_channel=KMBC9

It is day 3 of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. In December 1995, 19-year-old Conan Wade Hale and his accomplice, Jon Susbauer, unleashed a wave of terror in Oregon. It began on December 4, when they ransacked a woman's home, stealing valuables worth thousands and slashing furniture before fleeing. Days later, on December 16, they drove a stolen silver Chevrolet Suburban through Eugene and encountered two teenagers, Kara Krause and Jesse Jarvis, parked on a desolate road. After Susbauer posed as a property owner to engage the couple, a masked figure armed with a machete emerged from the darkness, forcing the teens to strip before sexually assaulting Kara. Both survived and later identified Susbauer as the "property owner," though only Jesse tentatively linked Hale to the attack. The duo escalated their spree on December 19, burglarizing another home to steal valuables, including a rabbit-fur jacket and a .38-caliber revolver, leaving behind more vandalism. By December 20, cruising the streets in the stolen Suburban, they crossed paths with Hale's 15-year-old ex-girlfriend Kristal Bendele and her friends. These young teens would not be as fortunate as those before. Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled “The Killer, the Confession and the Magazine Spread: Conan Hale.”Listener Discretion is courtesy of @octoberpodVHSAll music is courtesy of our editor and executive producer @theinkypawprintSources:https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/19980516/2750951/man-guilty-of-triple-murderhttps://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/view.cfm?id=474https://www.lmtribune.com/northwest/priest-involved-in-jailhouse-confession-is-leaving-town02e73f9c/https://www.oregonlive.com/crime/2020/05/whos-on-oregons-death-row-27-men-2-others-held-elsewhere.htmlhttps://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1996/05/11/taping-of-jailhouse-confession-to-priest-creates-furor-in-oregon/fdc77ccb-fc07-4c85-850d-90e08855b90a/https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/opinions/1996/05/12/violating-the-confessional/e333b7df-bb5f-460b-b48c-af7a1c9f51be/https://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/news-of-the-weird-6361362https://www.statesmanjournal.com/picture-gallery/news/crime/2016/11/14/oregon-death-row-inmates/93826530/https://casetext.com/case/hale-v-belleque-4https://murderpedia.org/male.H/h/hale-conan-wayne.htmhttps://nypost.com/2000/02/18/united-victims-of-benetton-families-speak-out-against-ads-that-honor-their-loved-ones-killers/

We are headed west on day two of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. It was pitch black on a gorgeous night in the middle of the Arizona desert in October 2003. There was not a cloud in the sky, but billions of stars were observable by the naked eye because Bumble Bee Road is in the middle of nowhere. In every direction, there was nothing but 90,000 acres of rolling hills dotted with Saguaro cactus spikes. Brandon Rumbaugh, age 20, a personal fitness instructor, and his girlfriend, Lisa Marie Gurrieri, a nineteen-year-old secretary for the Salt River Project, were celebrating their one-year anniversary. They had initially wanted to go to Disneyland to commemorate the occasion, but it was too expensive. The couple had been discussing marriage, so they didn't want to spend much money.  So, instead, they thought it would be romantic to go back to the Arizona desert and do some stargazing as they did on their first date. This time, though, they decided to camp out under the stars. Lisa had never been camping before, and the couple didn't really have camping equipment either, so they asked Lisa's mother, Paula, if they could borrow her brand-new white F-150 truck, and they would just sleep in the back of the vehicle with some sleeping bags. Paula wasn't thrilled about them taking the truck since it needed an oil change, but in the end, she gave them permission. Lisa also borrowed her mother's video camera. Then, Lisa made another request; she asked her mother not to tell her Uncle Mike where they were going because she knew that he'd be upset and worried about them. The area had become known as a “party destination. Unfortunately, it would turn out that Uncle Mike had every reason to worry.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘The Bumblebee Road Murders: Brandon Rumbaugh & Lisa Marie Gurrieri.'If you have any information about this case, please contact the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office or Silent Witness at 480–948–6377.Thank you to our team:Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from Octoberpod AMExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky PawprintSources:https://www.youtube.com/watchv=Vy0TYqOo_sg&ab_channel=RachelShannonTrueCrimehttps://www.findagrave.com/memorial/22764900/lisa-marie-gurrierihttps://www.newspapers.com/image/125512144/match=1&terms=Paula%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125512236/match=1&terms=Paula%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125513123/match=1&terms=Paula%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125454864/match=1&terms=Paula%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125254509/match=1&terms=Paula%20Gurrieri%20https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/205289317/brandon-keith-rumbaughhttps://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/azcentral/name/brandon-rumbaugh-obituary?id=27815392https://www.newspapers.com/image/125516344/match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125255612/match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125503770/?terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125503785/match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/125583182/?match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20 (Rusty Rankin)https://www.newspapers.com/image/126708234/?match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20 (Sonoma Ca couple)https://www.newspapers.com/image/125478691/?match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20https://www.newspapers.com/image/361287432/?match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20 (14 years later)https://www.newspapers.com/image/619647478/match=1&terms=Lisa%20Gurrieri%20https://www.abc15.com/news/crime/nearly-20-years-since-the-murders-of-lisa-gurrieri-and-brandon-rumbaugh-in-yavapai-countyhttps://www.9news.com/article/news/local/murder-suspect-dies-after-police-standoff/73-344894944https://darrensrides.blogspot.com/2011/09/crown-king-arizona.htmlhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/125583750/?match=1&terms=%22Rusty%20Rankin%22https://www.12news.com/article/news/crime/true-crime/scottsdale-couple-murdered-camping-trip-2003-unsolved/75-6cc84714-3ffc-49d5-9a06-5ba344db75f0  (image of the last photo taken on the camera)https://www.oxygen.com/crime-news/brandon-rumbaugh-lisa-gurrieri-cold-case-could-camera-hold-cluehttps://www.newspapers.com/image/125496399/match=1&terms=Michael%20Villershttps://the-m-files.medium.com/double-homicide-on-bumble-bee-road-4fa16a21d71https://www.nps.gov/aboutus/mortality-data.htmhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/125503785/match=1&terms=Crime%20Bumble%20Bee%20

On the first day of our Seventh Annual "12 Nightmares Before Christmas," we are heading just north of us to Fairfield, Iowa.  On November 2, 2021, the community of Fairfield, Iowa, was devastated when beloved Spanish teacher Nohema Graber, 66, went missing. She hadn't been heard from since she set out for her daily walk in Chautauqua Park. Just one day later, on November 3, her badly beaten body was discovered—mere hours after she was reported missing. Authorities found her remains concealed beneath a tarp, a wheelbarrow, and railroad ties. The police confirmed that Graber had suffered significant trauma to the head. This cruel act shattered the peace of a close-knit community, leaving residents not only devastated but grappling with a haunting question: what could drive someone to commit such an unthinkable act of violence? The answer would emerge just days later, but the age of the perpetrators and the motive behind their actions would leave the community speechless.Join Cam and Jen of Our True Crime Podcast to discuss “The Brutal Murder of Nohema Graber.”Special thank you to Abby Stout, who suggested this case to us. Listener Discretion by @octoberpodVHSMusic by our EP Nico @theinkypawprintSources:https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/crime/nohema-graber-jeremy-goodale-willard-mille-b2448484.htmlhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRV4LzHE71khttps://www.cbsnews.com/news/jeremy-goodale-iowa-teen-sentenced-killing-spanish-teacher-nohema-graber/https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/crime-and-courts/2023/07/06/fairfield-teacher-murder-teen-gets-life-in-prison-at-sentencing/70387288007/https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/nohema-graber-why-spanish-teacher-070137251.htmlhttps://www.reddit.com/r/TrueCrimeDiscussion/comments/18vij6a/november_2021_two_teens_planned_executed_and/https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66111470https://www.facebook.com/nohema.m.graber/https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/crime-and-courts/2022/03/22/iowa-teens-jeremy-goodale-willard-miller-nohema-graber-bat-snapchat-court-documents/7135981001/https://www.cbsnews.com/news/nohema-graber-murder-willard-miller-jeremy-goodale-killed-spanish-teacher-over-bad-grade-iowa-prosecutor-says/https://www.behnerfh.com/obituaries/nohemacastilloycastillo-graberhttps://lawandcrime.com/crime/teenager-who-helped-beat-spanish-teacher-to-death-over-co-defendants-failing-grade-is-sentenced/

We're heading to Hinckley, Utah—a remote place tied to one of the most heinous crimes in Utah's history. It was October 14, 1979, a crisp autumn afternoon in Salt Lake City, when four-year-old Alonzo Daniels was last seen playing in the courtyard of his apartment complex. When his mother checked on him, he was nowhere to be found. Alonzo had simply disappeared.  Desperation set in as relatives and neighbors combed the grounds and nearby streets; their search turned up nothing. Police arrived, questioning residents door-to-door. One of the first to be interviewed was Roger Downs, a neighbor who lived directly across the hall from the Daniels family. Downs denied knowing anything about the boy's disappearance, his demeanor was calm, and his answers were routine. Leads poured in, but each one proved fruitless. Alonzo had seemingly disappeared into thin air, leaving a community haunted by unanswered questions. What no one knew was that little Alonzo had already been murdered as his mom continued her search for him. The killer was hiding in plain sight and was far from being done.Join Cam and Jen on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled ‘I'd Do It Again: Arthur Gary Bishop.'Listener Discretion by @OctoberpodVHSAll Music is by our Editor @theinkypawprintProudly sponsored by sleepcreme.comThe World's Original and Finest CBD Topical for SleepOrder your bottle at sleepcreme.com. The Memorial Day weekend brought swarms of tourists to Niagara Falls, eager to celebrate under the sun. Just an hour away, a group of local teens gathered at Wayne Fleet Quarry, diving into the water and marking the unofficial start of summer. Alison and her friends, thrilled to leave the school year behind, decided to up the ante by jumping from an old bridge spanning the quarry. But as they reached the top, something unusual in the water caught their eye: a large, bulky bag emblazoned with "US" in bold, black letters. Curiosity piqued, they made their way down to inspect it. But the water around the bag turned red before they could haul it to shore. This wasn't discarded junk—junk doesn't bleed. Panicked, the teens scrambled up the road, frantically waving down a passing car, whose driver quickly called the police.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘A Body in the River: The Murder of Dr. Paul Campagna.'Listener discretion is by @octoberpodVHS.All Music is by our Editor @theinkypawprint.This episode is proudly sponsored by Yaman.Welcome to Yaman the very latest and greatest in J-Beauty innovations Listeners can visit YA-MANUSA.com/discount/TCP for a 20% discountAlso proudly sponsored by sleepcreme.comThe World's Original and Finest CBD Topical for SleepOrder your bottle at sleepcreme.com. It was frigidly cold in January of 1994, with snow drifts a foot high, as twelve-year-old Rebecca Savarese made her way to Notre Dame Middle School in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Suddenly, there was a man at her elbow. She was completely taken off guard because he had approached her from behind. She gave a startled jump, and the man said to her, “Do you see this gun I have?” Rebecca said that she had seen it.  The man then pointed at his truck and instructed her to get in. Rebecca balked, and although she remained calm, her mother's words echoed through her mind. Never get in a stranger's vehicle. When the man urged her to get into his truck, Rebecca pretended as though she was having an asthma attack. She pretended to have trouble breathing and feigned dizziness. Her actions took the man off guard for just a split second. He grabbed her and got a hold of her backpack. Rebecca wriggled out of it and took off running down the street, leaving the man holding her pack.  As she was running Rebecca saw a man standing outside a bank, “Sir, sir, sir! A man tried to kidnap me!” she said. The man ushered her into the bank, where they called the police.  There was no way that Rebecca Savarese could have known that morning when she got out of bed that she was going to inadvertently play a part in catching a child killer.  She had no idea that her actions on that day would bring closure to two families and probably stop an untold number of other children from experiencing a horrific early demise. She wasn't thinking about any of that. But when the moment came, Rebecca knew one thing. She wasn't getting in that vehicle. “If I'd gotten in that truck, I just knew I was going to end up someplace dead,” she later told reporters. Of that, Rebecca was most likely correct.Join Jen and Cam as they discuss "Evil in the East: Sara Anne Wood & James Bernardo"If you have any information that could help locate Sara Anne Wood's remains, please contact The Major Crimes Unit at 315-366-6000.A huge thank you to Sleep Creme for sponsoring this episode. In the heart of Albuquerque, Pastor Greg Griego often stood before the fire department and the local jail, sharing his powerful testimony of redemption. Once entangled in the world of gangs in California, he had found a new path through faith, a transformation that resonated with those who listened. He was well-known and well-liked in the community.  Greg Griego. Once a soldier in the 82nd Airborne Division, Greg had led a life marred by drugs and gangs. However, during a stint in jail in California in the early 1990s, he experienced a profound transformation, finding faith and embracing Christianity. This pivotal change set him on a path of redemption, ultimately leading him to serve others. While his wife, Sarah, dedicated herself to homeschooling their ten children in their modest home in the semi-rural South Valley. Greg had five children before he met his wife, Sarah, with whom he had five more. Greg turned their backyard barn into a sanctuary for released prisoners. Most would agree that Greg and Sarah were strict parents. They prohibited their children from playing violent video games and meticulously monitored their television choices. Greg Griego was determined to cultivate a home of hope, love, and healing, but that all ended on January 19, 2013.Join Jen and Cam on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled ‘Something Went Terribly Wrong: Griego Family Murders'Listener Discretion by @OctoberpodVHSAll Music is by our Editor @theinkypawprintThis episode is proudly sponsored by Yaman. This case is shocking. Shocking in many ways and I can't believe it's not talked about. The only place I've seen this is on Southern Gothic from our friend Brandon. When he first saw a small blurb about it in a book, he didn't even think it was true so he asked Lauretta to do some research. Sure enough, it is 100% true. As sensational as it was and is, I can't believe it's been forgotten. So after you listen, make sure you catch the Southern Gothic episode "The Curious Case of Knox Martin."In late March of 1879, in Davidson County, Tennessee, a wagon carrying a prisoner by the name of Knox Martin was headed to the gallows. John Kirk and Sons were busy building the scaffold that would host the hanging later that afternoon.Mothers pulled their children out of school so that they could take them to the execution. Nearly 10,000 people were making their way to the location nestled between two ridges; some had even camped out overnight to guarantee the best view. For years to come, some folks in attendance at this execution would have an unbelievable story to tell. It appears that in the days leading up to his date with the gallows, Knox Martin was approached by two doctors from the nearby Vanderbilt University, who, having great interest in galvanism, and who, having read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, wondered if Knox Martin would allow them to use his dead body for an unusual and ethically questionable experiment. It is  January 8, 1981, and we going to Lassen County, California, where we encounter 21-year-old Kevin Thorpe. After completing high school, Kevin enlisted in the Navy, serving for three years before returning to his hometown of Ridgecrest, California. Upon his return, he met a young woman named Laura Craig at a social gathering. Laura, a mother to a young child, captivated Kevin, who was undeterred by her circumstances; his affection for her was profound. Their relationship developed quickly and intensely—an embodiment of the adage, “When you know, you know.”Eager for a fresh start, Laura and Kevin packed their belongings into Kevin's white Ford Elite, towing a utility trailer, and left Ridgecrest for Oregon, where they hoped to be closer to Kevin's brother. They made the bittersweet decision to leave their baby, Treena, with Laura's mother until they settled in. As they took the scenic backroads north on Highway 395, a sudden jolt signaled trouble: the trailer had a flat tire. They decided to press on to Madeline, where they encountered a seemingly helpful man who offered assistance and invited Laura to warm up inside with his wife. Just as they began to fix the tire, three other men arrived, discussing plans to meet women in Oregon. Though Kevin wanted to continue their journey that night, little did they know, that the warmth of the cafe would soon be overshadowed by a chilling darkness, as their lives would be forever altered by the intentions of those they encountered.Join Cam and Jen on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled ‘Real Life Boogeymen: The Murders of Kevin Thorpe and Laura Craig.'Listener Discretion by @OctoberpodVHSAll Music is by our Editor @theinkypawprintThis episode is proudly sponsored by Yaman. In Logan County, West Virginia, there have been sightings of the ghost of a murdered woman that haunts 22 Mine Road. But underneath the spooky legend and sightings is a chilling story about the free-loving, warm-hearted Mamie Thurman who knew too much.It was the height of the Depression, and America saw the lowest numbers recorded on the stock market exchange. Prohibition was in full swing, and speakeasies and gambling houses permeated the town of Logan. On Wednesday, June 22nd, 1932, a berry picker found Mamie Thurman's body on the side of a mountain. Her throat had been slashed.  While investigating, police found that Mamie had been living a double life. A life that was deemed immoral by most of the town. Clarence Stephenson, a black "odd jobs man," would be found guilty of the murder of Mamie Thurman and sentenced to life in prison, where he claimed his innocence until the day he died.To this day, many think Clarence Stephenson is innocent, and Mamie's murder is still unsolved. And there are some that believe Mamie haunts 22 Mine Road because her real killer was never brought to justice.Light a pumpkin-spiced candle for spooky season and join Jen and Cam as they discuss "Something About Mamie: The Murder of Mamie Thurman."A huge thank you to Sleep Creme for sponsoring this episode. Today we are headed to Laurelwood, Oregon where we meet a young woman named Margo Compton.  Margo grew up in Solano County, California. She was a bright child who made good grades and had good friends.  Things started to change for Margo. Margo ended up getting married in August of 1969 to Doug  Compton at just 16 years old. At first, all seemed good in their marriage. Things changed when Doug met new friends from the Nomads motorcycle club, an offshoot of the Hell's Angeles. When Margo got pregnant, the violence began. This led to them both doing drugs and it was rumored that Doug often beat Margo. Doug started hanging out increasingly with the bikers and less at home. In July 1977, Margo testified in a California criminal case against a high-ranking member of the Hell's Angels. This would be a fatal mistake. Join Cam and Jen on our True Crime Podcast episode entitled ‘Fatal Mistake: Margo Compton Murders.'Listener discretion is by @octoberpodVHSAll music is by our EP @theinkypawprintThis episode is proudly sponsored by Yaman.Welcome to Yaman the very latest and greatest in J-Beauty innovations Listeners can visit YA-MANUSA.com/discount/TCP for a 20% discount. Also proudly sponsored by sleepcreme.com.The World's Original and Finest CBD Topical for SleepOrder your bottle at sleepcreme.com.
