On this episode of the Bible Reading Recap, Ted Ryskoski, Lance Lawson, and Rachel Chester discuss the final book in the reading plan for 2024, the gospel of John! The apostle John's gospel is unique amongst the four gospels in its emphasis on the divinity of Jesus. The one who was in the beginning, Creator of all, the very place where heaven meets earth . . . and also compassionate, generous, and personal with all he encounters. What happens after you die? We all wonder and want to know what really happens. In this episode, Pastors Sawyer and Matt seek to answer this question for three important angles: physically with your body, emotionally with those who are grieving and spiritually as we await heaven. We hope you are encouraged by our discussion and see how what happens to us then, should really affect how we are living right now. Romans 11: 7-10 7 So this is the situation: Most of the people of Israel have not found the favor of God they are looking for so earnestly. A few have—the ones God has chosen—but the hearts of the rest were hardened. 8 As the Scriptures say, “God has put them into a deep sleep. To this day he has shut their eyes so they do not see, and closed their ears so they do not hear.” 9 Likewise, David said, “Let their bountiful table become a snare, a trap that makes them think all is well. Let their blessings cause them to stumble, and let them get what they deserve. 10 Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see, and let their backs be bent forever.” LINKS The Good Race Youtube Facebook SHOW NOTES Dave recalls a recording of a call he and Steve had in February 2020. In this call Dave had a revelation in response to Bible Project Video called Tree of Life (https://youtu.be/TJLan-pJzfQ). He realized that in order to live for Christ he needs to die to the world. The only problem was... He did not know if he was willing to give up his flesh for the relationship with God. It's like a man, with a VHS rental store, choosing not to follow Christ because doing so would get in the way of renting adult movies. The value differential to an objective observer is so great it's absurd. Anything we would put in front of God would be considered worthless when compared to God. We need to make ourselves available to God! What are you doing to avail yourself to God? Be open to God using you. Try something Different. The Good Race Show is something that we are doing to If Dave hadn't chosen to live for Christ in February, God may have allowed Dave's heart to be hardened. We would do well to read Judges and recover the power of the stories going on in this book. We will not so much find stories about the hope of humanity, but about the desperate corruption that leaders are accountable for and the surprisingly gracious work of God in spite of bad leaders. Its theme is basically this - God’s people self-destruct when they ignore God’s word and get their values from the surrounding culture. Yet, God delivers his people from hopeless situations in surprising ways. God is in the business of rescuing people from the mess they create. Day 161 of the podcast, reading Psalms 1-8 NET, read along at: https://netbible.org/bible/Psalms+1-8/ This is day 161 of our journey. I am very excited to read through the Book of Psalms with you! I've never been excited by poetry, and Psalms, unfortunately, has been no exception. However, as I've studied more and learned the book's structure better, I realize that this is NOT just 150 poems, but rather a carefully crafted narrative. I look forward to experiencing this firsthand as I read through it again as part of our shared journey! One of the resources that has really helped me with this is an overview video on the book of Psalms by the Bible Project (link in the description). I highly recommend that you check it out before continuing. The first chapter of Psalms is, essentially, a foreword to the entire book. It describes two different paths that we, as humans, must choose between; The way of the wicked or the way of the Law of the Lord. These paths lead to two different rewards: we will be like a tree planted by streams of water, or we will be like chaff, blown and tossed by the wind. Choose the right path! The rest of our reading follows from this idea. The psalmists go through struggles and cry out before God. They trust in Him and follow in the Lord's path even when all hope seems lost. God answers them and delivers them, destroying the wicked in the process. Join me in Psalms 1-8 and rejoice in the Law of the Lord! Key verses: Psalms 1:2 Instead he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands; he meditates on his commands day and night. Psalms 2:8 Ask me,and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the ends of the earth as your personal property. Psalms 3:3 But you, Lord, are a shield that protects me; you are my glory and the one who restores me. Psalms 4:8 I will lie down and sleep peacefully, for you, Lord, make me safe and secure. Psalms 5:8 Lord, lead me in your righteousness because of those who wait to ambush me, remove the obstacles in the way in which you are guiding me! Psalms 6:9 The Lord has heard my appeal for mercy;the Lord has accepted my prayer. Psalms 7:17 I will thank the Lord for his justice;I will sing praises to the Lord Most High! Psalms 8:3-4 When I look up at the heavens, which your fingers made, and see the moon and the stars, which you set in place, 4 Of what importance is the human race, that you should notice them?Of what importance is mankind, that you should pay attention to them? The Bible Project Video link - vimeo.com/215686688 February 24, 2019 In ancient times, whenever the traveling judge came into your village, that was a good thing. It meant you could take your grievances to court. Wrongs could be made right. Injustices could get straightened out. The Day of the Lord is when the Judge shows up and renders a verdict, and that’s a good thing. Salvation requires judgment. But for those who oppose God’s ways, it will be a terrible day.
The Bible Project Video link - vimeo.com/211765113 February 17, 2019 How long can the average person live without breathing? Minutes. Breathing sends oxygen into your bloodstream, taking it to your brain and body. No respiration = expiration. The Holy Spirit is the breath of God in us, making us spiritually alive. After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples and “breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’” John 20:22.
