In this week's podcast I was honoured to join a four-way conversation between Giovanna and Vanessa de Oliveira Andreotti and Tim Logan of Future Learning Design Podcast, to celebrate the publication of Vanessa's new book, Outgrowing Modernity. Vanessa de Oliveira Andreotti is author of Hospicing Modernity: Facing Humanity's Wrongs and the Implications for Social Activism which we have referenced many times on Accidental Gods.  She is also Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria in Canada. She is a former Canada Research Chair in Race, Inequalities and Global Change and a former David Lam Chair in Multicultural Education. She is one of the co-founders of the Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures (GTDF) Arts/Research Collective, is the author of many academic papers and, with Aiden CinnamonTea, is co-author of Burnout From Humans. Most of her published articles and OpEds are available at academia.edu.Her daughter, Giovanna de Oliveira Andreotti, is a Dancer/dance teacher, GTDF member, certified Warm Data Lab host, founder of Rewiring for Reality: Cross Generational Reckoning, and an online course facilitator/co-ordinator. She holds a Bachelor's in Psychology from UBC, postgraduate certifications in Climate Psychology and Embodied Social Justice, and currently coordinates an inquiry that maps pedagogical practices addressing complexity, complicity, collapse, and accountability.This conversation took us deep into the complexity of what it means to be human at this moment when the old order is quite clearly in breakdown.  How do we use language? How do we engage with ourselves, each other and the web of life? And what is the web in a world where the first human-created silicon life is co-evolving with us.   How do we explore inter and intra-generational responses and capacity for meaning-making in a way that honours everyone, both human and beyond-human? Episode 90 of the Podcast for Social Research—TRANSgressions: Rights Wrongs, and Liberal Pieties—was recorded (mostly) live at BISR Central, as we celebrated Pride Month by asking: What happens when trans people in the public eye commit real or perceived wrongs? By what criteria—or liberal pieties or social justice aims—are these so-called wrongs evaluated? And what kind of trans experience even gets a public airing at all—why and in service of what? We submitted these questions to BISR faculty Sophie Lewis, Hannah Leffingwell, and Ruth Averbach, each of whom approached it in a way apropos of their own scholarly and activist priorities. The first voice you'll hear is Sophie's, speaking from Philadelphia about a very specific form of Enemy Transfeminism: Trans Zionism. Ruth picks up from there to track the ideologically bewildering reception of a counterrevolutionary trans writer in 19th century Russia. After which we hear from Hannah on how trans life has historically interacted with the clinic and been represented in film. What drives someone who identifies as Christian to commit acts of political violence? In the wake of the tragic shooting of Minnesota state legislators, we examine the disturbing intersection of faith, extremism, and vigilante justice.We explore the psychological and spiritual factors that lead people to believe they must take extreme measures to correct what they perceive as societal wrongs. From abortion clinic bombings to political assassinations, history shows these aren't new phenomena—though media coverage often suggests otherwise. The common thread? A dangerous impatience with God's timing and a fundamental misunderstanding of Christian vocation.The biblical perspective offers striking clarity. Romans 13, written during Nero's brutal persecution of Christians, maintains that governing authorities exist by God's design specifically to reward good and punish evil—not individual vigilantes. Jesus himself demonstrated remarkable restraint, rebuking disciples who wanted immediate vengeance against those who rejected them. His command to "love your enemies" leaves no room for exceptions or qualifications.We consider how some strains of Christian nationalism have fostered the belief that establishing moral conformity through political power should be Christians' primary goal—rather than spreading the gospel through relationship and witness. As one pastor notes, "We become so ideologically perfect, we become theologically worthless." When Christians become known more for political grievances than grace, our testimony is compromised.For believers troubled by genuine societal issues, we outline a biblical approach: pray for those in authority, engage democratically through voting and civic participation, build relationships that demonstrate Christ's love, and—hardest of all—genuinely love those with whom we deeply disagree. A member of the Clare minor hurling backroom team says the squad are out to remedy what went wrong during their first encounter with Cork this season. Roger, who has no criminal record, hasn't been heard from since. Human Rights Watch's Akshaya Kumar explains how an obscure law once used to detain Germans during both World Wars is now being deployed in peacetime for mass deportations. And Roger's uncle, desperate for answers, shares how he watched helplessly as his nephew disappeared into a system where due process has collapsed—and fear has taken its place.
