It's the First Thursday of Advent in the Church Calendar This week we are following the Daily Office lectionary with an episode Monday through Friday. Our general order and lectionary comes from the Book of Common Prayer Daily Office. We'll sing my song “Your Name.” We'll then offer a Prayer of Confession. We'll read Psalm 18:1-20 followed by the Gloria Patri. Our Scripture Lesson is Luke 20:27-40 . We'll say the Apostles' Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and the Collect of the Day. We'll then have a time of prompted prayer. If you have a prayer request please submit it here. Sign up here for the email list. Visit Patreon to give and support Morning Prayer monthly. Art: Glass by Dana Boussard Collect of the Day First Sunday of Advent, Rite Two Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Protests erupted weeks ago in Iran when Mahsa Amini, a 22 year old woman, reportedly refused to comply with Iran's female dress code, not putting on her head scarf. This should put the 'abortion on demand as a human right' debate into perspective. Some protestors have turned violent, burning buildings, disrupting the piece, and even attacking other protestors with knives. Perhaps we can understand why women are likewise burning their headscarves and kissing men on the street in defiance of Iran's oppressive laws. However, we can also understand where such ideas came from even if Iran's government maintains only the enforcement of archaic traditions. Women traditionally cover their heads as a sign of dignity and respect for themselves and their husbands. Men traditionally have been allowed multiple women as wives, not for fun, but to prevent women from being left destitute. These men had the responsibly of providing for women or facing similar harsh punishments. Ironically, the U.S. and Canada have both condemned the Iranian regimes response to protestors just months after have enforcing their own harsh policies on protesters of all types. Canada even put sanctions on Iran and banned officials from entering the country. Reports originally stated that 15,000 protestors were sentenced to death when the real number was closer to a dozen, though over a 1 thousand have been indicted. The few sentenced to death were burning buildings, disturbing public order, committing a crime against national security and for being “an enemy of God and corruption on Earth.” We can understand both resistance to government and the government's response hopefully. However, what is hard to grasp is why President Biden's top national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said the U.S. was concerned about “mass arrests, sham trials, and now a death sentence for protestors” voicing concerns over a denial of “basic dignity and freedom to its people.” Ironically the U.S. has recently organized mass arrests, held sham trials for former presidents and radio hosts, and socially sentenced political prisoners to death.Likewise, Canada and the U.S. condemned Iran, the second leading country for executions, while going dark about executions and human rights violations in the world's leading country - China. Further irony is found in 1 Corinthians 11 2:16 which states: “Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven.” Even further irony can be found in the fact that while western media attacks Kyrie Irving, Kanye West, and Dave Chappell over anti-semitism, when they have simply addressed political zionism, media has been silent about how both Palestinians and Iranians are semitic people. Perhaps the most irony can be found in American women complaining from expensive universities how they are the people truly oppressed in the world.

From growing up poor, to losing friends in music and from the neighborhood, to his climb to the top of music and stardom to thoughts of taking his own life to forming a close bond with Big Pun to turning pain into inspiration and respect to the greats who came before him is all detailed in Joe's book that comes out today. People see the end results and where he is now, but few understand the struggles and dark moments endured to get to this point in life. Although everything looks on the up and up now, Joe reveals his inner struggles and how he feels like there is a recurring shadow in his life that comes from betrayal and unexpected hurt. At his core, Joe feels he is a good guy doing bad things and he's been working to set his legacy straight with each level of success and growth. Fat Joe admits that his upbringing in the Bronx wasn't ideal but his mother's strength served as the glue for the family and the financial struggles he experienced as a child helped shape the man he is today and his unique appreciation for life and forgiveness. Making music changed his life and Joe credits hip-hop stemming from minority communities as an attempt to make light of oppression and find light in dark times. Channing pushes back on his words, asking Joe where the desire to do bad things came from despite growing up in a loving household as he acknowledges that he did a lot of bad things, some that others knew about and some that no one ever found out about and he asks him how he got to that place in life. Opening up about one moment which changed Joe's perspective on life and made him move differently is revealed as he shares a story of betrayal by a person closest to him that forever changed how he moved. Love Keeps No Record of Wrongs (Love Is... Series) - with Dr. J. Calvin Tibbs Friends, love is not easy. We are all flawed humans and mess up from time to time. The truth is, love doesn't keep score. Why do we keep records of wrong doings? Sometimes, it can be a form of protecting ourselves. In today's episode, I had the honor of speaking to Dr. J. Calvin Tibbs. Dr. Tibbs is the senior pastor at Kingdom Dominion Church in Georgia. Today we talk about how we can let love win, start forgiving, all the while letting go of keeping score.   Stop Holding Anger and Forgive We often hold on to bitterness, resentment and anger while trying to keep score in relationships. This is no way to love our partners. Again, love doesn't keep score. We are conditioned, as humans, to hold on to anger. This learned behavior closes us off to fully love our partners the way God intended us to love them. When we hold in anger, it can build up, causing more tension and pain in the relationship. It is so important for couples in relationships to be able to communicate freely and let their partner in when something may be bothering them. When we stop our anger from building up, we allow our partners to get closer to understanding where our real pain may be stemming from. When we step out of anger and begin to forgive quickly, it allows us to move through the healing process more efficiently.    Stop Keeping Score So many people are operating relationships in autopilot. When we wake up and realize we are doing something wrong, we need to also give grace to our partner and give space to forgive. Each partner needs their own time to heal. When an issue arises in a relationship, it can be difficult to move on when one partner continues to keep score. Couples need to realize that they are on the same team. Some couples feel that keeping score allows them to have justice for the wrongdoings. They use justification for the way they may treat their partner because they feel like they have one up on them, but love doesn't keep record of wrongs. Sacrifice is needed in every single relationship. When you are able to love your partner in their imperfections, you can give them grace and love for the mistakes that they make.   Serve Your Spouse Without Expectations Couples can transform their relationships by serving each other to the best of their abilities. When you let go of the need to receive and simply give love freely, you will see the blessings unfold. Each partner who gives their love without expectations will nourish something beautiful in their relationship. Dr. Tibbs said each partner should ask themselves, “Why am I here?” When partners realize that they are here to serve God as well as their spouse, they can fully understand their purpose. When couples can slow down in the relationship and understand where the resistance is coming from, it can give them direction on where to go. When you seek God in the pursuit of your relationship, love keeps no record of wrongs.   Links Mentioned in this Episode Calvin Tibbs Inc: Dr. Tibbs's Website and Coaching A Man Made For Marriage: Dr. Tibbs's Book The Power of Forgiveness in Relationships     SUBSCRIBE | SHARE | RATE | COMMENT To ensure you never miss an episode, be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
