Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte took office with a vow to eliminate illegal drugs. His “war on drugs” resulted in the brutal killing of between 12,000 and 30,000 people. Despite the international outcry and extensive media coverage of the deaths and their impact, Duterte remained popular—and untouchable – until recently. In March, he was arrested on an International Criminal Court warrant for crimes against humanity and is now sitting in a jail cell in The Hague. Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa, whose fearless reporting helped expose Duterte's brutal drug war, was targeted by Duterte – accused of everything from tax evasion to libel. In this episode of Rights & Wrongs, host Ngofeen Mputubwele speaks with Ressa and Human Rights Watch researchers about Duterte's bloody legacy, the importance of standing up to dictators, and what his arrest means for other leaders indicted by the ICC. Maria Ressa: CEO of Rappler and Nobel Peace Prize winner Carlos Conde: Senior researcher at the Asia division of Human Rights Watch Maria Elena Vignoli: Senior counsel in the International Justice Program of Human Rights Watch

A member of the Clare minor hurling backroom team says the squad are out to remedy what went wrong during their first encounter with Cork this season. The Banner travel to FBD Semple Stadium on Sunday to face Cork in the All Ireland semi final, with The Rebels having gotten the better of the round robin game in Tulla by 3-24 to 3-17 when the sides met in April. Barry O'Connell, who's brothers with manager Ger, is Head of Performance Analysis for the squad, with the pair having previously worked together when involved in the Clare camogie setup. He says when reviewing the video analysis of the previous defeat, the shortcomings of that performance became immediately apparent.

In this Bible Story, we witness the continued bravery of David even into old age. He continues to wage war against all who would threaten the followers of God. As a result, David becomes weary, but doesn't lose hope in the Lord. This story is inspired by 2 Samuel 21. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.Today's Bible verse is 2 Samuel 21:3 from the King James Version.Episode 110: Famine was in the land of Israel, and this led to hard times for the people. So David sought the Lord and asked what he should do. God showed him the reason for the famine and commanded him to make peace with the Gibeonites for the sins that Saul had committed against them. David called the Gibeonites to him and gave them their request, the life of Saul's sons. After this, the famine eased and Israel once again flourished. However, this flourishing would draw out more enemies of Israel and more battles, battles that David was too old to fight in.Hear the Bible come to life as Pastor Jack Graham leads you through the official BibleinaYear.com podcast. Roger and his partner Daniela arrived in the U.S. in January, conditionally approved as refugees by a US State Department-run program called the Safe Mobility Initiative. Hours later, she was deported. He was detained and then, he vanished. In this episode of Rights & Wrongs, host Ngofeen Mputubwele looks at what happened to Roger—and also examines the fate of 137 Venezuelans swept up under the Alien Enemies Act, a rarely used 18th-century law has only ever been used in times of war. What began with border agents at the Houston airport questioning Roger about his tattoos turned into ICE detention and a secret transfer to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador. Roger, who has no criminal record, hasn't been heard from since. Human Rights Watch's Akshaya Kumar explains how an obscure law once used to detain Germans during both World Wars is now being deployed in peacetime for mass deportations. And Roger's uncle, desperate for answers, shares how he watched helplessly as his nephew disappeared into a system where due process has collapsed—and fear has taken its place. Akshaya Kumar: Director of Crisis Advocacy at Human Rights Watch Noel Guape: Uncle of Roger Eduardo Molina Acevedo Juan Pappier: Deputy Director of Americas at Human Rights Watch
One of the dominant themes in St. Peter's epistle is to bear wrongs patiently, for it is a grace. Bearing wrongs patiently is one of the spiritual works of mercy. We must do this because it is the will of God; it is a means of our sanctification.
On this episode, Chris is joined by Karen Bailey - Chapman, Senior Vice President - Public and Government Affairs at SEMA. They chat about SEMA's advocacy initiatives and how electric vehicle mandates, tariffs and limiting access to public land impact the enthusiast vehicle community. Government policy inadvertently promotes stagnating innovation, increasing costs and limiting use of public lands. SEMA's advocacy initiatives are lobbying government decision makers to normalize and reverse the negative impact government policy has on the enthusiast vehicle community and aftermarket suppliers. It all began in 1963 when a group of small manufacturers who were suppliers of performance equipment for early hot rods organized their fledgling industry and called it "Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association" (SEMA).The mission was practical and straightforward: develop uniform standards for certain products used in motorsports competition; promote the industry as a supplier to consumers involved in constructive activities of recreational and hobbyist value; develop programs to encourage improved business practices among member companies; and hold regular meetings to achieve unity as a business organization. In those days, all of the members were founders of companies that produced speed equipment exclusively (hence, the organization's title). At the outset, the pioneering companies operated free of the constraints that come from governmental regulations and their attending restrictions. They were as aggressive and progressive as their imaginations would allow, and the mostly small businesses flourished. Today, many of the original companies are very large, successful corporations, and some, such as Edelbrock, Ansen, B&M and Offenhauser, are known internationally for their product lines. Today, more than 40 years later, the small group of entrepreneurial operations has been joined by thousands of companies, designers, producers and suppliers of specialty products that span the gamut. From performance products for street and race applications to appearance accessories for late-model automobiles and light-duty trucks, SEMA-member companies contribute to the vitality and strength of a $29.9-billion-a-year retail industry.SEMA eventually became the Specialty Equipment Market Association, embracing within its ranks all businesses in the distribution chain: manufacturers, warehouse distributors, jobbers, independent retailers, volume retailers, specialty stores (speed shops), sales agents, subcontractors and publishing companies. The membership categories even include racing teams, car clubs and special service organizations. The SEMA membership roster has steadily grown and continues its upward climb. Today there are more than 6,382 corporate members. Products supplied by the industry are in demand not only in the United States, but also throughout the world.Follow, Like and subscribe to the podcast on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and your podcast listing platform. Given the gross miscarriages of justice exposed by the Post Office/Horizon scandal, the extraordinary delay in reversing the wrongful conviction of Andrew Malkinson due to repeated failures by the Criminal Cases Review Commission and the continuing calls for the case of Lucy Letby to be referred back to the Court of Appeal, is the criminal appeal system in need of fundamental reform? Connecting the dots between recent events, and the health of criminal justice in Britain is Professor Penney Lewis who joins Ken Macdonald KC and Tim Owen KC to explain, in accessible terms, insider legal perspectives on topics such as the basis on which the Court of Appeal decides whether a criminal conviction is unsafe; the admissibility of fresh, post-trial evidence; the need for reform of juror secrecy; compensation for the wrongly convicted; and whether the Supreme Court should be able to decide for itself whether to entertain an appeal from the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division). Link to the Law Commission's Summary of its Consultation Paper on criminal appeals: https://cloud-platform-e218f50a4812967ba1215eaecede923f.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/sites/54/2025/02/Criminal-Appeals-CP-Summary.pdf Penney Lewis was formerly Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Centre of Medical Law and Ethics in the Dickson Poon School of Law, King's College, London and is currently the Criminal Law Commissioner of the Law Commission of England and Wales. The Law Commission is currently consulting on reforms to the law governing criminal appeals including the tests applied by appeal courts and the Criminal Cases Review Commission, post-trial retention of and access to evidence, and compensation and support for the wrongly convicted. If values like respecting proper parental authority and discretion, promoting awareness and admiration for American and Western culture, preparing students for constructive and knowledgeable citizenship, and conveying an accurate sense of American history in world context, once again became priorities, as there were in the past, what would K-12 education look like?In this presentation, Professor Amy Wax examined the debate on education to go beyond advocacy for school choice and how expanded school choice policies can produce desirable substantive reforms in K-12 educational practice. Professor Wax addressed these issues in her keynote address at the Liberty & Literacy Forum. Amy Wax's work addresses issues in social welfare law and policy as well as the relationship of the family, the workplace, and labor markets. By bringing to bear her training in biomedical sciences and appellate practice as well as her interest in economic analysis, Wax has developed a uniquely insightful approach to problems in her areas of expertise. Wax has published widely in law journals, addressing liberal theory and welfare work requirements as well as the economics of federal disability laws. Current works in progress include articles on same-sex marriage, disparate impact theory and group demographics, rational choice and family structure, and the law and neuroscience of deprivation. Her most recent book is "Race, Wrongs, and Remedies: Group Justice in the 21st Century" (Hoover Institution Press/Rowman & Littlefield, 2009). Wax has received the A. Leo Levin Award for Excellence in an Introductory Course and the Harvey Levin Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence. As an Assistant to the Solicitor General in the Office of the Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Wax argued 15 cases before the United States Supreme Court.

No one does it like Angie. Racial tensions, police shootings, citizen uprisings. Does this sound like the setting of a YA novel? How about three of them? Her debut 'The Hate U Give,' her sophomore release 'On The Come Up,' and her third 'Concrete Rose' were all on The New York Times bestseller list, and her fantasy middle school-level book 'Nic Blake and the Remarkables: The Manifestor Prophecy' was *also* an instant New York Times bestseller! In this classic chapter of 3 Books, we sat down together at the busiest hotel in downtown Toronto on the tail end of Angie's 15-city book tour to discuss how we find the truth for ourselves, when do we bring up harsh realities to kids, and what place media and religion have in society today.
