Welcome to the first Tales of the Magic Skagit podcast from the 2024 Skagit County Fair. Don Wick and I co-host the Meyer Sign Fair History Booth, and for our third year running we look for opportunities to sit down with folks at the Fair with good stories to tell. On Friday, August 9 (Day Two of the Fair), we start off with an interview with three members of an Anacortes-based West African drum ensemble led by certified Ghanian Master Drummer and flutist, Saeed Abbas. Joining Don and I for this interview is our Skagit Valley Youth History Project intern, Morgan White — herself a percussionist with Mount Vernon High School. Our second interview is with Jason Miller, the owner and publisher of a great upper Skagit newspaper, the Concrete Herald. We'll learn a bit about Jason's story and how the town of Concrete is doing. Our third interview is with Maddy Van der Kooy and Deb Eiderness, who are both involved in programs that provide resources and outreach to farmers dealing with stress — a more serious problem than you might think unless you're trying to make a living in farming in the 21st century. Our fourth interview is with the amazing cowboy comedian and trick roper Leapin' Louie, who is a new and fantastic addition to the Fair's entertainment lineup. You'll discover that his passion extends way beyond a humorous cowboy schtick. Don and I wind up the day with an interview with Skagit County Commisioner Ron Wesen who shares his own history and love for our annual Fair. We'll be back tomorrow with more interviews for Day Three. Keep it magic, y'all!

Isiah Harwell is the top target, and he has re-scheduled his official visit to Spokane after suffering an ACL injury. The Zags are also pursuing a top-ranked wing from Ontario, a 6'11 center from New Zealand, and a guard from Israel in the 2024 class - more proof they are still a major player in the international recruiting market. Gonzaga also has their eye on a local kid, Davis Fogle, a 6'5 guard from Anacortes who has shown interest in Gonzaga and is getting Power-6 interest from Nebraska, Indiana, Clemson, and others while rocketing up the rankings. Mark Few, RJay Barsh, and the Gonzaga Bulldogs coaching staff are heavily pursuing multiple extremely talented high school stars in the 2025 recruiting class, in particular going after 6'5+ guards to give them added size on the perimeter. Isiah Harwell is the top target, and he has re-scheduled his official visit to Spokane after suffering an ACL injury. The Zags are also pursuing a top-ranked wing from Ontario, a 6'11 center from New Zealand, and a guard from Israel in the 2024 class - more proof they are still a major player in the international recruiting market.Gonzaga also has their eye on a local kid, Davis Fogle, a 6'5 guard from Anacortes who has shown interest in Gonzaga and is getting Power-6 interest from Nebraska, Indiana, Clemson, and others while rocketing up the rankings. Speaking of rocketing up the rankings, Nik Khamenia is now a consensus top 50 prospect and is still projected to land in Spokane, while Las Vegas center Xavion Staton is now ranked 22nd in the class of 2025 thanks to his incredible length and athleticism.Discord Server: https://discord.gg/CcSNerjWPmLink to national college basketball national podcast: https://linktr.ee/LockedOncbbhttps://linktr.ee/LockedOnZagsLocked on Zags - Part of the Locked on Podcast Network.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Athletic BrewingGo to AthleticBrewing.com and enter code LOCKEDON to get 15% off your first online order or find a store near you! Bread Pilot - "Crook," from the 2022 album New To You on Double Double Whammy Bread Pilot began in 2011, when high school students Taylor Hayden (guitar/vocals), Stephen Ibanez Jr. (guitar/vocals), and Evan House (drums) would practice in Hayden's mother's home. In fact, today's Song of the Day is named after Crook Horn Road, where a teenaged Hayden would host basement shows. After graduating, the trio relocated to Seattle, choosing to record their debut album at The Unknown in Anacortes. “We had a bunch of different musicians playing on tracks that made them so much better, adding in this new flair," Hayden told Under the Radar. "The best part of recording is that the process is so fun. That's another strength that all of us have. When we're starting on recording, putting our heads together, it's like building.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jo Ann Glim was born in Chicago, Illinois to a military family and raised in Anacortes, Washington in the far reaches of the Pacific Northwest. It was an ideal place to raise a precocious child, especially one that's inquisitive and daring. Tragically, her mother passed away from a stroke when Glim was fourteen. This was the beginning of a life-path plotted with many dark events. In her own words, “Instead of consuming me, they made me stronger, and I'm here to tell you, darkness can be replaced with light.” Glim's three-pronged career of broadcast and print media, freelance writing, and business management formed her into the indie author she is today. Her 5-Star books, the award-winning “Begotten With Love,” and her newest release “Trapped Within,” are both non-fiction, life-stories filled with challenges, hope, and humor. Glim now lives in Florida with her husband Bill and their Scottish terrier, Lucy. Her passions are writing, photography, travel, handbells, and hiking. A paralyzing stroke twenty-four years ago left her most of all, grateful for life itself!www.joannglim.com
