Let's talk about a post-military career in professional sales. Business-to-business (B2B) sales is one of the most important functions in the business world. It is where a company that makes a product or service interfaces directly with a customer. As the name suggests, B2B sales is all about selling products and services to other businesses in order to help them meet their professional goals in the market. From a JMO perspective, Sales is also one of the most misunderstood career field categories. When I initially talk to military officers about Sales, I often hear objections such as they do not want to go into a role that is 100% commission, high pressure, and high travel. Additionally, they think sales is a zero-sum game where you have to "do" something to someone in order to win. Business-to-business sales are different. With B2B Sales, your objective is to create a trusting relationship with a customer, demonstrate your credibility in solving their problem or creating value, and deliver a product or solution that helps your customer be more effective in their marketplace. In this episode, you will hear three Cameron-Brooks alumni talk about their post-military career in Professional Sales, their experience as sales professionals, as well as dispel some common myths about the sales profession. You will meet: Bridget Walton, USMC Command and Control 1LT, launched her career at Motorola Solutions. Blake Boyd, Army Armor CPT, launched his career at Abbott. Billy Cattron, Army Infantry CPT, launched his career at Altec. Each of those former military officers attended the January 2019 Cameron-Brooks Career Conference. One of the most interesting aspects of the webcast is that although each of these officers started their career in a different industry, each shared similar experiences about understanding customer needs, creating solutions, and ultimately bringing value. At Cameron-Brooks, we have seen countless numbers of military officers launch their careers in B2B sales. If you want to hear more about a sales career, including career progression and growth, check out podcasts with Aaron Carter, Anthony Applegate, Jonathan Brewer and Connor Pratt! Of course, if you want to know more about how Cameron-Brooks can help you reach your personal and professional goals, you can learn more on our website, LinkedIn, and YouTube, or you can call or email me directly. You may have met a librocubicularist and not known it. You may stood next to one at Barnes and Noble. You might even be one. According to singer songwriter Alexandra Scott, a librocubicularist is a person who enjoys reading in bed. According to our crack Happy Hour research staff Grayson Jernigan the word is not in Websters dictionary, but then Webster can t be expected to know everything. Alexandra, on the other hand knows a lot of stuff, including inside tales of her hometown Charlottesville and the actions of the neo Nazis who, for all the wrong reasons, have put the place on the map. Godwin s Law of internet etiquette allegedly postulates that discussion of Nazis ends all discussion. But this crowd managed to push on through and cover a great deal of post Nazi ground from Fiji inspired skincare to Polaroid photography, and much more. Linsey Lamba created her Fijian inspired skincare line, Ariya Apothecary, when she was working for Microsoft in Seattle and living in New Orleans. A life of bouncing back and forward stressed her out and gave her acne which she cured herself with potions she whipped up based on her mom s Fijian folk remedies. Today Linsey lives full time in New Orleans, has a skincare line, and doesn t need to mess with Microsoft. Ginette Bone is 6 feet tall but her accent is probably the first thing you notice about her. Living in New Orleans for 37 years hasn t dimmed her British diction one bit. Ginette and her husband, artist Blake Boyd, own the Boyd Satellite Gallery on Julia Street and are in the throes of assembling their joint decades long project, Louisiana Cereal. It s a collection of over 500 Polaroid photographs of Louisiana luminaries that is going to be a limited edition book and an exhibit. You can be a part of it thanks to Kickstarter. Ok, so you have listened to our BS for 127 episodes or so, so this week we introduce an exciting new program for BAS. We will from time to time invite guest curators on to put together an episode of Bad at Sports. This week, Artist, Curator, Musician, Gallerist, Radio Host and recipient of the 2007 Richard H. Driehaus Foundation grant, Philip von Zweck does a show focused on the area from whence he came, New Orleans.Philip von Zweck grew up in Slidell Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans that was also devastated by Katrina. In January he made his first trip back since the storm and took along a recorder for Bad at Sports to find out what’s going on in New Orleans Art and what’s up with Prospect.1, the first New Orleans Biennial coming this fall. Along the way he spoke with Chris Deris, a high school friend (BFA, Atlanta College of Art; MFA, RISD) who now teaches Sculpture at Loyola University; New Orleans artist Blake Boyd; Odgen Museum of Southern Art Curator David Houston; and Cynthia Scott, an MFA student at Tulane and one of the organizers of forthcoming artist initiatives responding to Prospect.1.
