As this episode kicks off, Kevin Godley and his longtime songwriting and creative partner, Lol Creme, have just left 10cc, so instead of being part of hits such as “The Things We Do for Love,” the duo continues pushing their artistic boundaries as Godley & Creme. Godley describes how he and Creme collaborated on music and, eventually, videos—for themselves and, among others, Herbie Hancock (“Rockit”), the Police (“Every Breath You Take”) and George Harrison (“When We Was Fab”). He recounts work on the groundbreaking video for Godley & Creme's biggest hit, 1985's “Cry,” which uses a pre-CGI version of morphing to merge one face into another, as Michael Jackson would do with more technology years later. Godley also tells of the end of his partnership with Creme, the current state of relationships among the four original 10cc members and where his creative drive is taking him next.

Graham Gouldman already had written classic ‘60s hits—including the Yardbirds' “For Your Love” and “Heart Full of Soul,” the Hollies' “Bus Stop” and “Look Through Any Window” and Herman's Hermits' “No Milk Today”—by the time he and Manchester schoolmates Lol Creme and Kevin Godley plus ex-Mindbender Eric Stewart formed one of the '70s' most tuneful, innovative bands, 10cc. These four singer-songwriters made four distinct, head-spinning albums, with Stewart and Gouldman's hypnotic “I'm Not in Love” providing the commercial breakthrough. After Godley and Creme split off, Gouldman and Stewart continued on as 10cc, scoring hits with the ebullient earworm “The Things We Do for Love” and the island misadventure “Dreadlock Holiday,” on which Gouldman sings lead. Now Gouldman is the only original member touring under the 10cc banner, and he reflects here on songwriting, collaborating and relationships among ex-bandmates.

On Today's Episode – Mark dives right in with our guest Charles Sauer. They talk similar likes as far as authors go and give the listeners some options for good reads. We move to operating systems for economies. We get a clear definition of capitalism and how it was named by it's enemies, and how it can actually work. We move to TikTok, and the why's and how's of it. Mark goes all PhD. Into the science about how algorithms work and how it is very similar to how slot machines work. Dopamine hits matter, and social media knows it. We wrap things up with a conversation on economics and the Biden budget. Mark and Charles explain how our current economy and budget's truths can be manipulated by politicians and news outlets when they explain things like “we created a bunch of jobs”. https://www.realclearmarkets.com/articles/2024/03/11/contra_tiktok_paranoiacs_national_security_isnt_an_excuse_to_limit_free_speech_1017508.html X - @marketinstitute Charles Sauer – Founder and President Charles Sauer is a seasoned economic policy expert, author, President and Founder of the Market Institute. Entrepreneurial journeys rarely go in a straight line. They have detours, divergences and often life outside the work journey impacts thinking, action and final goals. When one journey ends, another might start along the same path or go in a completely different direction. My guest on this episode is Vered Neta. A multi-hyphenate entrepreneur who has done several successful exits from companies she has created, Vered is now on a new journey that she chose because she wanted a new challenge. When that new path threw up a lot of road blocks, she pivoted and created another successful divergence. Take a listen as Vered and I discuss her journey, her favorite questions to ask when she gets stuck and how she hopes to help others who caregive for loved ones with Alzheimers with her latest book, Things We Do for Love, available wherever books are sold. Vered Neta has lived in three different countries for the last six decades, so tracing her origins is a thrilling quest. Nowadays, she lives in Tenerife on an off-the-grid finca, creating a self-sustained life for her and her partner while writing her novels and scripts. Her stories are character-driven dramas, giving voice to the untold stories of women and their triumphs in today's society. Her mission? To illuminate the world with kindness and positivity, one story at a time. Vered's words have touched countless lives through her multiple books on motivation and relationships. Her book "Financial Independence for Women" sold over 50,000 copies. In 2010, Vered was awarded the TIAW World of Difference Award, an award given to women whose efforts have advanced women's economic empowerment locally, regionally or worldwide.

When pivoting, it's easy to second guess yourself or make excuses why you shouldn't do something. Karin Taylor, founder of Mandalay Farms, shares how to keep moving forward without knowing what's to come. South Florida's Karin Taylor does it all. She's a single mother of five, just launched a series of podcasts and is founder and owner of Mandalay Farms, a private oasis where you can connect and interact with a variety of animal ambassadors. The 20-acre property in Jupiter Farms, Florida is home to a Noah's Ark like menagerie of over 70 domesticated and exotic animals including horses, donkeys, pigs, kangaroos, goats, emus, otters, a variety of birds, lemurs, porcupines, and an assortment of reptiles. Taylor worked as a model and actress. She got her start as a dancer at Walt Disney World in the Electric Light Parade and launched her modeling career at the age of 18 when she was discovered by the Ford Modeling Agency in Miami Beach. Her career really took off after she posed as June's Playboy Playmate in 1996, an experience she describes as positive, respectful, and a place she found lifelong friendships. After Playboy, Karin went on to land guest starring roles on “Baywatch” and “Malcolm & Eddie”. She guest hosted for E! Entertainment Television, appeared on HGTV's “Smart Design,” and in Horace Brown's music video for the song “Things We Do for Love.” Taylor discovered the healing power of animals after the loss of her daughter, Hunter, to Trisomy 13. A few years later, she purchased the 20-acre property, now known as Mandalay Farms, to mark a new chapter in her life and connect with her children through horses. It was the tranquility of the farm and healing power of the horses that inspired her to learn more about equine therapy. That lead to her being certified in Equine Assisted Learning (EAL). She also founded the nonprofit Mandalay Farms Zoological Society to serve at-risk youth, children in foster care, and individuals with special needs through science-based animal interventions.' Taylor is now also taking on yet another venture with the launch of several podcasts. Her goal is empowering women who are on their own individual journeys. Some of her first guests included former Playboy Playmate Ulrika Ericsson and second wife of former President Donald Trump Marla Maples – both women who shared their own journeys of life's transitions. For more information on Mandalay Farms, please visit MandalayFarms.com and follow them on Instagram @mandalayfarms and Facebook @MandalayFarms where Taylor frequently posts news about happenings at the farm, as well as animal photos and videos.
In today's Books with Hooks, Carly and CeCe are joined by two authors, Melissa and Elizabeth, whose work they critique. In the process, they discuss ensuring each that timeline in a dual timeline is its own story; keeping scenes condensed to keep propelling the story forward; mentioning the pandemic in contemporary fiction; baking in subtle references to things instead of explaining them to the reader; finding ways for a character to interact with other characters, especially when we'll be spending a lot of time in their head; making small cuts to decrease word count; how not naming dramatic moments that change everything could mean losing agent request opportunities; telling the reader what's going to happen vs letting them theorize; and ensuring you surprise the reader with something in the first chapter. After which, Bianca chats with Jennifer Hillier, bestselling author of Things We Do in the Dark, about writing away real-world fears and anxieties; how she writes and includes/doesn't include backstory; how she structures her novels without the use of an outline; having no ego when receiving critiques; and the importance of planting curiosity seeds.Find us on our socials:Twitter: @TSNOTYAW @BiancaM_author @carlywatters @ceciliaclyraInstagram: @biancamarais_author @carlywatters @cece_lyra_agent @ the_shit_about_writingFacebook: @tsnotyawWebsites: www.theshitaboutwriting, www.biancamarais.com and www.carlywatters.com Jennifer can be found at www.jenniferhillierbooks.com and on Instagram at @jenniferhillierbooks
