This is a big one! In the first of a two-part series, Sam shares a story that taught her about the importance of feeling your emotions and letting others see and support you. Specifically, Sam talks about a formative experience - a physical assault she experienced in college - and the perspective she has gained from processing this experience. Sam shares the story around the assault and her inability to process her emotions around it for several years. She describes the way these unprocessed and deeply suppressed feelings of fear, grief, and shame manifested in intense anxiety, and her refusal to see the connection. Her moment of clarity at a crystal energy and sound bath healing (she randomly found herself at) where she suddenly understood her need to feel her emotions around this assault and to share this experience with others. She describes the fear she experienced before sharing this story - the fear of disbelief, of judgment, of blame, of dismissal - and the intense support and love she was met with instead. Sam describes one of the most profound lessons she has learned in her life: when you let others have the opportunity to see you - really see you in your full expression of who you are - you have the opportunity to receive their support in ways you couldn't know before. And that support can provide liberation. By sharing her story, Sam hopes that you can find ways to give yourself grace for whatever your story is and however you may feel about it. Each of us have stories that have brought us pain, and maybe even fear and shame. Whatever you are feeling - your feelings are valid and you have nothing to be ashamed of. The more we can look at and accept the parts of ourselves we struggle to reconcile, the more we can show up in our lives as our true and unique selves. And that is where the magic happens! *** Mentioned on the show: Bryanna Dee's podcast Shadow Light http://bryannadee.com Website: www.wildriver.live Instagram: @wildriver Once a month, Sam will select a person who left a review during the previous month for a free in-depth human design reading. My thoughts on what constitutes healthy vulnerability in sharing our stories. Some things to consider when deciding if, when, and how to share your story with other people or on public platforms. How I make those decisions for my Self. I get these questions from y'all a lot. And this is such an important conversation to be having in today's age of oversharing and contrived vulnerability (aka sharing vulnerably just for marketing or sales). The answers to all of these questions are so subjective and personal that nobody can answer them except for you! So I share my own process in hopes that it gives you something to consider throughout your own process. In this episode, I am sharing my story/relationship with religion & spirituality. To date, I have avoided sharing much about my own spiritual beliefs/experiences publicly... and yet it is one of the most important pieces of my life. And it is something that we ALL have some kind of relationship with, even if the relationship is that we do not identify as being religious or spiritual. I have some upcoming interviews that will dive more into these topics, but I decided to open the conversation through a share of my experience because I know there is someone else who is going to relate. This is a candid share about my personal experience with mental health -- growing up with mental illness in my family, my own struggles, then going on to work in the mental health field, in mental institutions, nonprofits, prisons, courtrooms, etc. To sum it up, our mental health medical model is actually a mental illness model that medicalizes and profits off of human despair. We deserve a lot more. We have to become activists for our Self and demand more. Which, first, requires having more of these candid conversations. We are doing a giveaway right now! If you leave a review for this show on iTunes, take a screenshot before pressing submit and email it to hello@bryannadee.com. To thank you for loving and supporting the show we will send you a free recording of a powerful forgiveness hypnosis!

Yesterday was my 30th birthday... 30 on March 30th!! Meaning this is my golden year ;) And boy does that feel true! I have never felt so happy, in purpose, in alignment, at ease in my life as I have over the past few months. Not because of anything that has come into play in my external world--the past few months have actually been pretty overwhelming and have thrown me for quite a few loops, business and personal. Instead, my inner world has shifted so much that, at this point in my life, everything just feels easier. At ease. Perspective, amiright? Having struggled with depression and anxiety for as long as I can remember (my first official diagnosis was around 13 years old), it brings me so much JOY to realize where I am today and to reflect upon what I have learned/what has made the biggest SHIFT in my life. So I decided to stream of consciousness a list of 30 things I have learned in these 30 years, in hopes of sharing even just one lesson that might help you shift something in your life! Thank you all for the love and kind messages on my birthday. This podcast has legitimately changed my life and it is such a privilege when I hear back from y'all and are able to connect with those of you who make all of this possible! SEASON 2 IS HEEEERE, and my Enneagram 7 ass is jumping up and down with excitement!! It is really taking a lot of effort not to completely abuse exclamation points right now. I have big plans for this year with the podcast, and I'm so grateful that you're joining me on this journey of exploring some of the most fascinating topics and ideas about being a person in the world today. My guest for this episode is Bryanna Dee, the host of the podcast Shadowlight, which explores similar topics as this show (sooo if you love one, you'll probably dig the other) but through Bryanna's unique lens. Her views on wellness and business are informed by her own life path, which includes a chaotic upbringing, loss, law school, experience working in the criminal justice system, and so much more. We had a really deep and honest conversation about the difficulty and necessity of exploring wellness-related work in the context of privilege and social justice, and how we can view the concept of manifesting with acknowledgment of social issues that are outside our individual control. You can find Bryanna online at her website BryannaDee.com, her Instagram @bryannasayingthings, and Shadowlight wherever you listen to your podcasts! Ep 055: Relationships are deeply woven into our experience on this planet. From the day we are born, we’re completely dependent on someone else. You’ve probably heard that our relationships are mirrors. I’ve always thought of this as a way of saying: How you see other people is a reflection of how you see yourself. But at another angle, your relationships with other people are your opportunity to experience yourself and to grow. When you’re in it, the growth can be hard to see. It’s actually most often in hindsight that we realize what we learned. But the more you shift your mindset to awareness in your relationships, you start to experience it in real time. Our guest today is Bryanna Dee and she understands what it feels like to let her relationships define her life. From a difficult childhood and a complicated relationship with her parents, to traumatic breakup. She was so concerned with trying to be the person she thought she was supposed to be that she was totally disconnected from herself, and as a result, also from others. Eventually through allowing herself to be seen and seeing herself through a new lens, she began to discover who she really is. The more connected she became to herself, the more comfortable she became opening up to others and the more connected she became with everything else in the world. Today we will learn: How to go from losing yourself to finding yourself in relationships How to approach relationships for your growth How to have compassion even when you don’t understand someone Show Notes: https://mindlove.com/055 Learn more about your ad choices. In this short solo-sode, I discuss some thoughts that have been percolating in my mind over the past couple of years and are coming to a boiling point since I have been working in the "wellness industry" full time for a few months now. I talk about a more pronounced integration of social justice into the wellness industry/into our notion of self-care... and what that means for the future of this podcast! (hint: there will be some changes, but it will largely still be the same. EXPANSION, Y'ALL)
Welcome to the first episode of Shadowlight! I am your host, Bryanna Dee. I believe that this human experience is a perfect juxtaposition—the dark and the light exists in perfect equanimity. That juxtaposition is what most ignites me. As such, I am allergic to small talk and I am obsessed with having authentic, vulnerable conversations about things that really matter; things like mental health, spirituality, the meaning of life, our deepest fears and desires, and the cosmos. You can imagine how well this went over for me at the bars in college! I went to law school to advocate for mental health but found myself frustrated with the system (in more ways than I can count). Now, I have now taken a step back from systematic advocacy and have moved into a more holistic, personal form of advocacy—for mind, body, and spirit. My mission is to share what I have learned (and what I am still learning) on my own holistic healing journey, in hopes that my story will inspire other people to tap into their own radical vulnerability. This first episode is my introduction, my story—what led me to start this podcast! IN THIS EPISODE I TALK ABOUT: Growing up in a home with addiction and abuse How that evolved into a life of self-imposed Perfectionism and Pollyanna Positivity My mother’s mental health struggles as the beginning markers for my passion in mental health advocacy and my strong aversion towards pharmaceuticals Going to law school for mental health advocacy My own mental health struggles; my “dark night of the soul” while in law school, which launched me on a holistic healing journey The holistic PhD therapist who changed my life Discovering the world of trauma Why I believe that the traditional mental health care system is inadequate and incomplete My mother’s overdose and its impact on my life and my belief system Learning to open up and become vulnerable and realizing that the more vulnerable and open I became, the more profound my relationships became Realizing that my “career” passion is not in advocating for mental health rights on a systematic level, but for more personal holistic healing for the mind/body/spirit Appreciating the beauty, depth, love, and joy that comes from talking about my shadows My new mission, to share what I have learned in my own holistic healing journey, and to interview amazing lightworkers to share what they have learned in their journeys. All with a desire to inspire other people to be radically vulnerable, to express themselves, and to ask for help… and to feel deeply connected along the way! LET’S CONNECT Website: www.bryannadee.com Instagram: @bryanna_dee Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bryannadee Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/bryannadee/ That time I thought I could not go any closer to grief without dying I went closer, and I did not die. Surely God had his hand in this, as well as friends. Still, I was bent, and my laughter, as the poet said, was nowhere to be found. Then said my friend Daniel, (brave even among lions), ‘It’s not the weight you carry but how you carry it - books, bricks, grief - it’s all in the way you embrace it, balance it, carry it when you cannot, and would not, put it down.’ So I went practicing. Have you noticed? Have you heard the laughter that comes, now and again, out of my startled mouth? How I linger to admire, admire, admire the things of this world that are kind, and maybe also troubled - roses in the wind, the sea geese on the steep waves, a love to which there is no reply? -Mary Oliver
