Cari Rincker, Esq. joins episode four of the Raising the Barn podcast. We know that the vast majority of farmers wear a lot of hats, but I'm not sure many wear as many as Cari. Farmer, Ag and Family Lawyer, Professor, Podcaster, Triathlete, 4H Judge, Author, and recently, new Mother are just a few of the titles that Cari holds. Cari is the owner of Rincker Law and Cari's Farm in Champaign, Il. During our conversation, we talk about farm law, how she's balancing life on and off the farm, and her advice for the next generation of farmers. Some of the questions we chat about: When it comes to legally protecting an Ag business, what are some common mistakes that she sees folks making? What are some frequently asked legal questions that she receives from farmers? How does she balance life on and off the farm? With Cari's Farm, she's selling beef, goat meat, and eggs. How is she marketing her business? She's been involved with the 4-H program as a member and now as a judge. What is she excited about for the next generation of farmers? What's one piece of advice she'd give to someone who is younger and planning a career in Ag or even someone who is looking to make a career change and get into farming for the first time? What's on her marketing plan for 2022?

I get lots of questions from folks interested in agricultural law.  What majors should I consider in undergrad?  What courses should I take in law school?  What does an agricultural lawyer really do?  What are your best tips for someone interested in law school? I rounded up some of the best in the business to answer these questions. I'm hoping that by offering different thoughts and perspectives, this episode will be helpful in illustrating there really is no one path to a career in agricultural law. We've got two practicing attorneys.  Cari Rincker, a Pace University School of Law alum, owns her own law firm with offices in Illinois and New York City.  Amber Miller is a partner at a law firm in Lubbock, TX and went to law school at Drake University. Next up, I interviewed Jennie Zwagerman, a law school faculty member at Drake University who is the incoming Director of the Drake Agricultural Law Center and works in career services. We wrap things up with a current law student, Austin Vincent, who is in his second year at Texas Tech University. Today I am joined by my friend and Texas A&M University alum, Cari Rincker, to talk about family law.  As Cari explains, practicing agricultural law can include a variety of legal areas, including family law. I absolutely love her tag line that she does "horses and divorces!"  I failed to mention this on the podcast, but Cari is extremely active on social media, so be sure to check her out on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. During our discussion, Cari gives great advice related to why folks should consider prenuptial or postnuptial agreements and explains how she has converted from being against prenups, to being a proponent of them.  We talk about reasons for these agreements and what type of terms are often included. We also discuss different types of alternative dispute resolution available for family law issues, and why Cari is a proponent of those resources.  I love her thoughts on why divorce litigation differs from any other type of lawsuit and her encouragement for people walking through a divorce to seek out counseling.  Additionally, she offers thoughts and advice for students or attorneys interested in ag law and planning on hanging out their own shingle. Cari says that one law she would like to see changed is that she'd like to see the process for obtaining a divorce be simplified and more affordable for people. For her restaurant recommendation, she goes back to her Texas A&M roots and mentions the ever-popular Dixie Chicken in College Station, Texas.  In particular, she's a fan of the Tijuana fries, burgers, and cold beer.   Contact information for Cari Rincker (Website) https://rinckerlaw.com/   (Email) cari@rinckerlaw.com  (Twitter) https://twitter.com/CariRincker (Facebook) https://www.facebook.com/RinckerLaw/  (Instagram) @rinckerlaw   Links to topics mentioned on the show: - Top 10 Reasons Why "Prenups" Are Romantic article by Cari Rincker - Field Manual: Legal Guide for New York Farmers and Food Entrepreneurs - Onward & Upward: Guide for Getting Through New York Divorce & Family Law Issues - American Agricultural Law Association   A big thanks to my friend Tell Runyan who composed and recorded the music for today's episode.
