While avian influenza had already been detected in cattle and other mammals, including in the United States, the infection of a sheep will increase concern over the potential impact of the disease's spread. There have been cases among humans which have ranged in severity from no symptoms to, in rare cases, death. But there has not yet been any confirmed transmission between humans. The virus is spread through contact with infected birds or other species, including through touching their droppings and bedding, although people can also catch the virus by killing or preparing infected poultry for cooking. Avian flu has been detected in cattle in the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control reporting 41 cases and 989 dairy herds affected as of last Friday. Experts say the risk of avian flu to the general public is very low. Mexico Pushing For More Domestic Pork Facing Trade War Mexico has become a huge importer of U.S. pork, but the government in Mexico City is now talking about self-sufficiency as trade tensions with Washington are about to intensify. In a recent meeting with domestic producers, the Mexican Agriculture Minister pointed out that the country's own pork sector only meets 53% of demand. Imports last year reached 1.4 million metric tons, a large majority from the neighboring United States. President Donald Trump, in early February, threatened 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, imposed taxes on large numbers of imports from both countries in early March and has vowed to tariff most other products on April 2. Canada has already retaliated against some U.S. products including chicken, while Mexico is poised to impose tariffs on exports including meats if the United States carries out its threat next week.  Pork demand has soared as Mexico has become more affluent. Last year, 38% of U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports went to Mexico. By value, exports to Mexico jumped 10% in 2024 to nearly $2.6 billion, more than the next two markets, China/Hong Kong and Japan combined. The value of U.S. pork exports to Mexico has more than doubled from $1.15 billion in 2020, and the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service projected further growth this year before trade policy disruptions. Sustainable Beef Plant Comes To Nebraska A crowd estimated at more than 1,200 people witnessed a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a $400-million cattle processing plant this week in North Platte, Neb., a project that Sustainable Beef LLC originally announced in 2021. The new facility is expected to provide about 850 jobs and expand beef processing capacity in the area in addition to establishing more long-term sustainable growth for local cattle producers and family farms. The facility is expected to process an estimated 1,500 head per day, according to Sustainable Beef officials.  We will have more on Sustainable Beef LLC and its new fed cattle grid pricing system with Red Angus Cattle on next week's program.   RanchChannel.Com Now Has The Futures Markets & New Listings Futures Markets RanchChannel.com now has futures markets at your fingertips!  Feeder Cattle, Live Cattle, Corn, Wheat, Soybeans, Soybean Oil, Milk Class IV, and Ethanol.  Information is provided by DTN and market information may be delayed by as much as 10 minutes.  Click Here for more information! Season 5, EPISODE 226 Data Decides The Bulls At Keller Broken Heart Ranch & Beef Checkoff Updates Using Technology At Keller Broken Heart Ranch For Bull Selection Genetics That Combine Data & Functionality At Keller Broken Heart Ranch, great cattle are more than just numbers—they must also look and function well. This philosophy has produced standout donor cows like WS Miss Sugar C4 and BarCK 106Z, whose offspring consistently lead the herd and excel in other breeding programs nationwide. These cows and their progeny have shaped the Keller herd's genetics, with their descendants now leading the charge in improving carcass traits and maintaining physical quality. Sons of these donors are used in AI programs, and daughters have become foundational to future breeding success. A Vision For Continuous Improvement The Kellers embrace the mindset of lifelong learners, always striving to improve their herd. By mating cattle on paper and analyzing performance data, leveraging RightMate by Allied Genetic Resources, the Keller Broken Heart Ranch achieves uniformity in their herd without sacrificing performance. Focus on data-driven decision-making has become the cornerstone of their success. This commitment to innovation and adaptability ensures that Keller Broken Heart Ranch remains a leader in the Simmental and SimAngus industries, producing cattle that excel in data, performance, and visual appeal. The Future Outlook  The ranch remains steadfast in its mission: to improve the herd. By annually selling 120 bulls and 80 heifers, the Kellers stay dedicated to producing cattle with high marks on the ASA (American Simmental Association) All-Purpose Index (API) and Terminal Index (TI). Some Say The DOGE Should Look At The Beef Checkoff According to Meating Place, the Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund United Stockgrowers of America or R-CALF, CEO Bill Bullard encouraged ranchers and cattlemen to reach out to President Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to request the agency audit the USDA's Beef Checkoff Program.  Bullard said that we've long argued that the beef checkoff program, which is a USDA program that requires cattle producers to pay $1 for every head of cattle they sell; and it collects about $70 million each year, which he says, much of that comes from producers who do not support the mandatory government program.  He went on to say that while the beef checkoff program is supposed to fund education, promotion and research for beef, and not fund lobbying, evidence of abuse has surfaced and an independent audit report found that $216,000 of mandatory producer contributions had been misspent. The Beef Checkoff has strong cattle producer support, according to The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA), and undergoes annual audits and posts that information on their website. NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane told Meating Place that the Beef Checkoff is an example of individual farmers and ranchers coming together to create a program that conducts research, educates consumers and builds demand for beef with a return on investment to producers of $13.41 for every $1 invested—all while operating with annual financial audits, strict oversight and at no cost to American taxpayers. R-CALF is a non-profit organization serving as a voice for independent cow-calf and sheep producers and feeders across America. NCBA is a non-profit trade association representing U.S. cattle producers.  DOGE is a temporary contracted organization under the United States Digital Service, which has asked the public to contact the organization with ideas for “reducing waste, fraud and abuse.” Imports Of Mexican Cattle Are Expected To Resume  A temporary suspension of imports of Mexican cattle into the United States is ending, according to several reports. The Mexican Agriculture Minister said that USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service  or  (APHIS) signed the first memorandums to allow the suspension to be lifted. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) thanked the Trump administration and USDA for “working swiftly” to protect the U.S cattle supply from the threat of New World Screwworm, which sparked the import suspension late last year. APHIS has developed a comprehensive protocol that involves layers of veterinary inspections and treatment to prevent the spread of screwworm and other types of ticks and insects. Beef on Dairy: Genomics, Genetics, and Sire SelectionIn this final episode of The Moos Room's three-part Beef on Dairy series, Brad dives into the genetics and genomics of beef-on-dairy crosses. He breaks down the results of genomic testing on 50 crossbred animals, highlighting how breed composition influences carcass traits, marbling, and growth rates.Brad explains how new genomic tools, such as Neogen's identity profile, can help farmers predict carcass weight, average daily gain, and marbling potential early in an animal's life. While the test worked well for supported breeds like Angus and Simmental, results for Charolais and other breeds were inconsistent due to database limitations. The episode also covers sire differences, showing how genetic selection significantly impacts final carcass quality. Brad discusses his own approach to selecting beef sires for dairy cows—prioritizing calving ease and ribeye area over growth rate. He emphasizes that understanding sire variability is key to optimizing beef-on-dairy performance. Finally, Brad explores how genomic testing could help feedlot management, allowing producers to sort and feed cattle based on their genetic potential, potentially increasing profitability. However, the cost-effectiveness of testing for terminal animals remains an open question.Tune in to learn how genomics is shaping the future of beef-on-dairy production!

Beef on Dairy Research: Growth, Efficiency, and Carcass DataIn this episode of The Moos Room, Brad continues the deep dive into beef-on-dairy research, focusing on data collected in Minnesota. This is the second installment of a three-part series, where we examine how different beef breeds perform when crossed with dairy cattle.Key highlights include:✅ Pre-Weaning Performance: Limousin crossbred calves showed greater growth efficiency than Holstein calves, consuming less milk while gaining more weight.✅ Breed Comparisons: Angus, Simmental, Charolais, Hereford, and Limousin crosses were evaluated from birth through harvest. Hereford calves had the highest weaning weights, while Charolais and Simmental showed strong growth through finishing.✅ Carcass Data: Charolais and Hereford yielded the heaviest carcasses, while Limousin crosses had the largest ribeye areas. Angus and Hereford crosses finished the fastest, reaching market weight in fewer days.✅ Meat Quality & Economics: Most animals graded Choice, with some achieving Prime. Economic analysis showed that Charolais and Hereford crosses brought in the highest total revenue due to their larger carcass sizes.Next week, we'll wrap up the series by exploring the role of genomics in beef-on-dairy systems. Tune in to find out if genomic testing is worth it for terminal animals!

The patient, over 65 years old and with underlying medical conditions, contracted the virus through exposure to a backyard poultry flock and wild birds. No additional H5N1 cases or evidence of person-to-person transmission have been identified, and this remains Louisiana's sole human case of the virus. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 212 DETAILS USDA ELECTRONIC ID TAGS EXPLAINED & TOP SIMMENTAL GENETICS USDA Electronic ID Tag Rules Explained USDA EID Tag Rule Sparks Questions Producers are still confused about how to use the new USDA EID Tags, where to get them, and wondering if there are enough in circulation. Justin Tupper, President of the U.S. Cattlemen's Association and owner/manager of St. Onge Livestock in St. Onge, South Dakota helps explain the rules and shares his experience and thoughts on the program. As the leading provider of EID tags and readers through the Allflex® brand, Merck Animal Health wants to support cattle producers in their decision-making with the expertise and solutions they need. Key Distinctions With Official ID Rules The new policy only applies to interstate movement. Other exemptions include direct-to-slaughter cattle and sexually intact cattle (and bison) under 18 months of age. Animals that will need electronically and visually readable tags when they enter interstate movement include: Sexually intact cattle and bison 18 months or older All dairy cattle, including beef-on-dairy crossbred animals Cattle and bison of any age used for rodeo, recreation events, shows or exhibitions Another important detail: Visual ear tags applied before Nov. 5, 2024, will be recognized as official IDs for the life of the animal. They'll be grandfathered in and will not need an EID. Easing The Financial Burden Producers and the livestock industry have raised concerns about the potential cost burden of the new tagging policies. Congress recently directed USDA-APHIS to allocate no less than $15 million for the cost of tags and related infrastructure to help offset those costs.2 Producers may be able to access EID tags for free via their state veterinarian. They can apply those tags at approved tagging sites. Producers can also buy EIDs directly from a distributor, online vendor or local dealer and apply the tags themselves. In addition, producers are not required to invest in tag-reading hardware or software, unless they choose to do so for herd management and record keeping. The EID tags can be used the same way as visual tags. Addressing Data Privacy Concerns EID tags are encoded with a number that identifies the animal, but no owner-specific information. The data associated with the tags will be stored in various federal and state databases. Access to that data will also be restricted to the state and federal officials responsible for managing high-impact diseases of the cattle industry. USDA agnostic on EID tags USDA isn't mandating or recommending any one brand of ear tag. Tags must be approved by the department and will be imprinted with the Official Eartag Shield. The Allflex radio frequency ID (RFID) tags offered by Merck Animal Health meet these standards. They use a short-read range that doesn't interfere with radio frequencies commonly found in livestock operations. Allflex tags do not include any global positioning system (GPS) capabilities. Producers also use these RFID tags to track health protocols, performance, reproduction and genetics. The new tagging requirements are intended to bolster the industry's tracing capabilities in the event of a disease outbreak. Contact your Merck Animal Health representative or tag supplier to find out how Allflex tags can help you comply with these rules while managing your beef or dairy operation more efficiently. EPISODE 204 DETAILS Program Cattle, Beef Checkoff, Beef Industry News  Cattle Buyers Continue To Recommend Program Feeder Cattle Program Feeder Cattle, Buying & Selling Tips Many buyers are recommending that those producers that are enrolling in various programs to assist in marketing feeder cattle need to continue with those programs because they could be setting the benchmark of prices in the future. Mike Bolinger with Superior Livestock joins us again discussing program cattle, his thoughts on the Beef Checkoff and other various industry topics. Latest Beef Checkoff & Industry News Export Federation Warns Of Port Strike Impacts Of Beef Exports are heavily dependent on the Eastern ports threatened by an Oct. 1 strike deadline, but the ramifications of a halt in shipments would be serious for beef and pork industries, too, the U.S. Meat Export Federation warned late last week. USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom said, “The three big West Coast ports are the leading outlets for U.S. beef and pork exports. That doesn't mean the East and Gulf coast isn't important. If we look at total waterborne exports of pork, about 45% of those go through the East and Gulf coast ports, and beef side about 30% of the waterborne exports.” He pointed in particular to “quite a high percentage of very high value chilled beef that goes out from the East Coast in particular for destinations like Europe and the Middle East. He said we can't overstate the importance of the East Coast and Gulf Coast ports. Even though the West Coast is larger, still a very significant quantity is exported through the East and Gulf coasts. Halstrom said any halt in port activity “will back up the supply chain immediately,: and redirecting meat exports to the West Coast is “by no means a long-term solution at all,” because a vast flow of grain and non-farm commodities and goods would also be left without port capacity. He said we're challenged to export all of our products today using all the ports, so we cannot afford a shutdown in any part of the supply chain. Plant Based Diets Are More Expensive Originally posted in Alt-Meat and then again in MeatlingPlace.Com, consuming a plant-based diet that is nutritionally equivalent to one that includes animal proteins is “considerably” (34% to 45%) more expensive than an omnivorous diet, putting numbers to one complaint that's been voiced about plant-based diets for years, according to new research from New Zealand's Massey University. As published in the journal “Frontiers in Nutrition,” the article reviews recent modeling studies using Linear Programming to determine the respective roles of animal- and plant-sourced foods in developing a least-cost diet in the United States and New Zealand. The abstract said that “In both economies, least-cost diets were found to include animal-based foods, such as milk, eggs, fish and seafood, to meet the energy and nutrient requirements of healthy adults at the lowest retail cost. The article said , the costliest culprits in transitioning from an animal- and plant-containing least-cost diet to a plant-only based least-cost diet are mostly vitamins and minerals. In conclusion, “Modeling of least-cost diets that consist exclusively of plant-based foods is feasible, but at a higher daily diet cost, and these diets are often close to limiting several key nutrients. 2024 Stockmanship & Stewardship Tour, Hamburg, New York The Stockmanship & Stewardship Tour is coming to Hamburg, New York and surrounding states October 25 - 26 at the Agriculture Discovery Center In Hamburg, New York.  Participants will explore a range of informative topics such as carcass quality, grazing management, consumer insights, and more, all designed to elevate your operations and boost profitability. Join us on the Grazing Grass Podcast as we continue our journey into the fascinating world of livestock color genetics. In this episode, we explore the practical aspects and implications for breeders, focusing on the two primary pigments—eumelanin (black) and pheomelanin (tan)—that determine livestock coat color. We simplify the terminology for ease of understanding and revisit key genetic loci, such as the extension and agouti loci, which play significant roles in coat color variations in cattle. Additionally, we discuss unique alleles like black-red, where calves change color as they age, and dominant red, which overrides the extension locus. Drawing insights from Dr. Sponenberg's "Practical Color Genetics for Livestock Breeders," we offer a comprehensive guide for beef and dairy cattle breeding. In our discussion on cattle color dilution genetics, we shed light on the Simmental and Charolais dilution alleles, which impact coat colors, resulting in lighter shades like orange, yellow, and various grays. We also touch on other breeds such as Galloway and Dexter, which have their unique dilution genes that can sometimes lead to unexpected coat colors. Furthermore, we explore the genetic complexity in breeds like Brown Swiss and Murray Greys, and mention the recently identified Larson Blue dilution gene, enriching our understanding of the intricate genetics behind cattle coat colors. Our exploration doesn't stop there; we also delve into the intriguing patterns of white spotting genetics in cattle. From the "wading" allele, which creates white patterns on the lower legs and belly, to the "white sides" allele characterized by animals with white sides and pigmented legs, we cover a wide range of patterns. We discuss speckled patterns such as "colorsided," "fisheagle," and "spitting cobra," along with the roan category and its variations like "marocha" and "salineiro." Finally, we examine modifiers like "brockle," "ticking," and "smudge," which add complexity to these patterns. This episode promises a rich and informative discussion on the genetic factors shaping the diverse and beautiful coat colors of livestock.Visit our Sponsors:Noble Research InstituteKencove Farm Fence

EPISODE 189 DETAILS BOVINE RESPIRATORY DISEASE (BRD), MANAGE IT NOW.  OVERVIEW OF BOVINE RESPIRATORY DISEASE COMPLEX Bovine respiratory disease (BRD), shipping fever pneumonia, or undifferentiated fever is a respiratory disease of cattle of multifactorial etiology with Mannheimia haemolytica and, less commonly, Pasteurella multocida, Histophilus somni ( see Histophilosis), or Mycoplasma bovis being the important bacterial agents involved. Viral pathogens may also be involved, such as bovine herpesvirus 1, parainfluenza-3 virus, and bovine respiratory syncytial virus. BRD has a multifactorial etiology and develops as a result of complex interactions between environmental factors, host factors, and pathogens. Environmental factors (eg, weaning, transport, commingling, crowding, inclement weather, dust, and inadequate ventilation) serve as stressors that adversely affect the immune and nonimmune defense mechanisms of the host animal. In addition, certain environmental factors (eg, crowding and inadequate ventilation) can enhance the transmission of infectious agents among animals. Many infectious agents have been associated with BRD. An initial pathogen (eg, a virus) may alter the animal's defense mechanisms, allowing colonization of the lower respiratory tract by bacteria. BRD is most commonly associated with the transport and assembly of large groups of recently weaned calves into feedlots. Morbidity in these types of feeder calves often peaks within the first 7–10 days after feedlot arrival. Morbidity can approach 35%–50%, and case fatality is 5%–10%; however, the levels of morbidity and mortality strongly depend on the array of risk factors present in the cattle being fed. The use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials labeled for bovine respiratory disease is the primary treatment, with macrolides and fenicols most commonly used as first-line treatment. Prevention and control are achieved via vaccination programs, preconditioning, identification and treatment of subclinically infected animals, and biosecurity. Etiology of Bovine Respiratory Disease The pathogenesis of bovine respiratory disease involves a stress factor, sometimes coupled with viral infection, which results in suppressed immune defenses and the proliferation of bacteria in the upper respiratory tract. Subsequently, these bacteria colonize the lower respiratory tract and cause bronchopneumonia with a cranioventral distribution in the lung. Many of the bacteria and viruses involved are commensal organisms of the upper respiratory tract that can be isolated from a proportion of healthy animals. Multiple stress factors contribute to the suppression of host defense mechanisms in cattle. Weaning is a noteworthy stressor, and the incidence of this disease is highest in recently weaned calves. Transportation over long distances serves as a stressor; it may be associated with exhaustion, starvation, dehydration, chilling, and overheating, depending on weather conditions. Additional important stressors include passage through auction markets; commingling, processing, and surgical procedures on arrival at the feedlot; dusty environmental conditions; and nutritional stress associated with a change to high-energy rations in the feedlot. The individual viral and bacterial etiologies, clinical signs, lesions, and treatment are discussed under Viral Infections Associated with Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex in Cattle and Bacterial Pneumonia in Cattle with Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex. Viruses associated with BRD include: bovine herpesvirus 1 (IBR) bovine respiratory syncytial virus parainfluenza-3 virus bovine viral diarrhea virus bovine adenovirus bovine coronavirus Bacteria associated with BRD include: Mannheimia haemolytica Pasteurella multocida Histophilus somni Mycoplasma bovis Bibersteinia trehalosi Control and Prevention of Bovine Respiratory Disease Prevention of bovine respiratory disease should focus on decreasing the stressors that contribute to development of the disease. Cattle should be assembled rapidly into groups, and new animals should not be introduced to established groups. Mixing of cattle from different sources should be avoided or minimized if possible; however, in the North American beef industry, this risk factor is almost unavoidable for large intensive feedlots. Transport time should be minimized, and rest periods, with access to feed and water, should be provided during prolonged transport. Calves should ideally be weaned 2–3 weeks before shipment, and surgical procedures should be performed in advance of transport; however, the availability of these “preconditioned” calves is quite limited. Cattle should receive arrival processing, which would include vaccinations and possibly metaphylactic antimicrobials within 48 hours after arrival at the feedlot. Adaptation to high-energy rations should be gradual, because acidosis, indigestion, and anorexia may inhibit the immune response. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies should be corrected. Dust control measures should be used. Metaphylaxis with long-acting antimicrobials, such as oxytetracycline, tilmicosin, florfenicol, gamithromycin, tildipirosin, or tulathromycin, has been widely adopted as a control measure given “on arrival” to cattle at high risk of developing shipping fever pneumonia. Metaphylaxis on arrival has been shown to substantially decrease morbidity, improve rate of gain, and, in some cases, decrease mortality. Mass medication in feed or water is of limited value because sick animals do not eat or drink enough to achieve inhibitory blood levels of the antimicrobial, and many of these oral antimicrobials are poorly absorbed in ruminants. On arrival, processing usually involves administration of modified live virus vaccines for viral antigens and for bacterial components of shipping fever pneumonia. Because most cases of pneumonia occur during the first 2 weeks after arrival, these on-arrival vaccines may not have adequate time to stimulate complete immunity in all individuals. When possible, vaccinations for the viral and bacterial components of shipping fever pneumonia should be given 2–3 weeks before transport or earlier and can be repeated on entry to the feedlot. Key Points BRD is the most common and costly disease affecting the North American beef cattle industry. BRD risk factors include weaning, transportation, adverse weather, commingling, and stressful events such as dehorning and castration. BRD is caused by suppressed immune responses and initial viral infection, which allow colonization of the lung by commensal URT bacteria. Preconditioning, minimizing mixing, vaccination for BRD pathogens, and metaphylaxis for high-risk animals are major control methods. Broad-spectrum antimicrobials labeled for bovine respiratory disease are the primary treatment.   For More Information Key elements for implementing antimicrobial stewardship plans in bovine veterinary practices. American Association of Bovine Practitioners. Updated March 2022 Joint AABP-AVC Judicious Therapeutic Use of Antimicrobials in Cattle   Cattle Industry News: Beef From Australia, New Genetic Defects, Alberta Prepares for HPAI, Trips Suspended to Michigan Farms U.S. IMPORTS OF AUSTRALIAN BEEF UP 74% FROM A YEAR AGO  Australian exports of beef to the United States have soared in the last 12 months, hitting over 31,000 tons in May. Compared to the same month a year ago, that sum is 74% higher, according to global supply analyst Tim Jackson of Meat & Livestock Australia, a checkoff group for the country's red meat producers. Australian farmers have also gained beef market share in Japan and South Korea largely at the expense of U.S. exporters, Jackson said. Australia's global beef exports last month were up 9% from April and 25% from May 2023, hitting almost 114,000 tons — the highest level in more than four years. Jackson commented that the U.S. declines in production are now having a noticeable impact on export flows.  NEW GENETIC DEFECT AFFECTING CATTLE MOBIDITY AND MEAT QUALITY Cattle have long been a cornerstone of agriculture, providing us with milk, meat, and various other products that nourish and sustain our communities. Ensuring the cattle's health and optimal muscle development is vital when producing high-quality beef. However, various genetic conditions can disrupt muscle metabolism, affecting animals' well-being and the quality of the meat they produce. Researchers at the University of Nebraska — Lincoln have discovered a new defect in composite cattle (Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh) that often caused physical collapse when they exercised, with some calves unable to recover. This is an autosomal recessive genetic defect, which means both parents of affected calves must carry one copy of the mutation.     TRIPS SUSPENDED TO MICHIGAN FARMS The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services asked the public to postpone visits to farms with dairy herds and poultry flocks amid the HPAI outbreak. Over the past few weeks, Michigan has reported two human cases of the H5 virus. The department asked schools, daycares, camps and other programs to delay any planned field trips to farms.   ALBERTA PREPARES FOR HPAI IN CATTLE According to Chris Scott with Meating Place dot com, Confirmation of H5 virus infections in U.S. dairy cows is prompting animal health officials in Canada to consider their options to prevent the virus from affecting herds north of the U.S. border. Dr. Keith Lehman, Alberta's chief veterinarian, told CBC News that vigilant surveillance is critical to protecting the Canadian dairy herd from a virus that has been confirmed among dairy cows in nine U.S. states so far. Canada imposed new import rules last month that require lactating cows from U.S. dairy farms test negative for H5 within seven days of export to help the nation maintain its HPAI-free status among cattle.   UPCOMING SALES & EVENTS ISA Beefmasters: October 5, 2024, San Angelo, Texas     BULL SALE REPORT & RESULTS Churchill Cattle Company Van Newkirk Herefords Gardiner Angus Ranch Cow Camp Ranch Jungels Shorthorn Farms Ellingson Angus Edgar Brothers Angus Schaff Angus Valley Prairie Hills Gelbvieh Clear Springs Cattle Company CK Cattle Mrnak Hereford Ranch Frey Angus Ranch Hoffmann Angus Farms Topp Herefords River Creek Farms Upstream Ranch Gustin's Diamond D Gelbvieh Schiefelbein Farms Wasem Red Angus Raven Angus Krebs Ranch Yon Family Farms Chestnut Angus Eichacker Simmentals & JK Angus Windy Creek Cattle Company Pedersen Broken Heart Ranch Mar Mac Farms Warner Beef Genetics Arda Farms & Freeway Angus Leland Red Angus & Koester Red Angus Fast - Dohrmann - Strommen RBM Livestock Weber Land & Cattle Sundsbak Farms Hidden Angus Wheatland Cattle Company Miller Angus Farms L 83 Ranch U2 Ranch Vollmer Angus Ranch A & B Cattle Carter Angus Farms Roller Ranch Montgomery Ranch Jorgensen Farms DLCC Ranch Four Hill Farm North Country Angus Alliance Spruce Hill Ranch Wilson Angus   FEATURING Dave Sjeklocha, DVM Merck Animal Health @merckanimalhealth https://www.merckvetmanual.com/ https://www.merck-animal-health-usa.com/ Mark VanZee Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/   @StoneXGroupInc    Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos   Questions & Concerns From The Field? I've always associated Bruce Holmquist with just being everywhere! It seems like no matter the event or gathering, he is sure to be there. It was great to hear from him about the World Simmental Fleckvieh Conference and how he will be a part of two of these events in Canada. A wonderful accomplishment for the Simmental breed as a whole on the world stage highlighting Canadian Seed Stock.  Bruce's list of organizational affiliation and board activity is very long and impressive. I sure appreciate him talking to us about those positions and how some opportunities came around. I also think him highlighting some of the sacrifices along the way is important too.   It is clear that the Simmental breed and Agribition hold a special place in Bruce's heart. He has dedicated most of his adult life to being a part of the industry and working to leave it better for the next members or exhibitors to come.  Thank you to Season 3 sponsors: BoviGen Reproductive Services Klassen Industries  Angus World Thank y'all for listening. EPISODE 168 DETAILS Everyone has their breed of choice.  For whatever reason and experiences we've had, has led many of us picking certain breeds over others.  Today we explore the philosophy and goals around Wasem Red Angus.   Calving season is getting ready to start for many producers and for some others it is still a ways away yet.  Regardless, we need to get a jump on scours and make sure each and every calf that hits the ground has the best chance of survival.  A simple solution… FARMATAN from Imogene Ingredients.   As always we have the latest market reports and recaps from Kirk Donsbach with Stone X Financial, Inc. along with news and updates you need to hear.  It's all covered on this brand new episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show!   WASEM RED ANGUS The Wasem family started ranching in 2004 in Halliday, North Dakota with a small herd of commercial Red Angus and Simmental cows. They decided to get into the registered Red Angus business and held their first bull sale in 2012.  Each year they keep back the best registered heifers to expand the registered herd and to improve our genetics.  They strive to offer cattle with power and performance through balanced EPD's and phenotype.  Disposition is a must in the herd.  They are proud to be selling Red Angus Bulls in North Dakota. They welcome you out any time to look at cattle. Family Business Here at Wasem Red Angus, we are truly a family operation.  Each one of us has a job on the ranch and work together to make the operation a success.  Chris is in charge of many of the daily tasks, including feeding, planting, and harvesting.  Jolyn works on record-keeping and marketing.  Kacee is the number 2 cook in the house, quickly making her way to the top.  Braelyn is the one who makes us all laugh.  There are many days on the ranch, we need a good laugh!  The girls have been a huge asset working cattle the past few years, they are learning about low-stress livestock handling, as well as becoming good horsemen.  We wouldn't be able to get everything done without the help of family, friends, and neighbors throughout the year and we are grateful for those relationships.  Customer Service Customer service is really important to us. The relationships we build don't end the day of the sale. We stand behind the Red Angus Bulls we sell, and your happiness is important! WHAT CAUSES SCOURS IN BEEF CATTLE/CALVES Clostridia-Enterotoxemia The most common form of Clostridium in cattle is caused by Clostridia perfringens. The gram-positive bacteria are a challenge due to its ability to form spores and lay dormant for long-periods of time. The bacteria reproduce by releasing spores into its environment (soil, feed, manure). The spores can even lay dormant in the animal's intestine until opportunity presents itself. Infection takes place either through ingestion of spores or through an open wound. The most severe cases happen within the first month of a calf's life, and can result in sudden death. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Bloody, Mucus Present, Bubbly • Dehydrated • Bloat • Blindness Prevention/Treatment: Prevention can be difficult due to the Clostridia spores being extremely durable and present almost everywhere. Complete cleanout and disinfection between calves is helpful, but not always effective. A good vaccination program will reduce clinical disease. The best method is to develop good gut health and the immune system of the calf. Farmatan has been shown to strengthen the intestinal wall, helping to prevent infection from taking hold. Coccidiosis Cattle are host to numerous species of Coccidia, a single-celled protozoal parasite. Infection and clinical symptoms can happen any time during a calf's life, with the most severe reaction usually occurring between 3-6 weeks of age. The life-cycle of coccidia requires time to infect the intestine causing destruction of the mucosal and epithelial lining. The oocytes mature outside the host in warm, moist environments before being consumed, causing infection of a new host. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Watery, Bloody • Depression • Weight Loss Prevention/Treatment: Prevention of Coccidiosis is possible by keeping young calves separate from older animals, providing clean water and feed, and dry conditions. Isolation of infected animals is key to preventing transmission. Keeping the pen dry is the most important step a farmer/rancher can take in preventing Coccidiosis. Treatment can have a good impact on reducing secondary disease, and speeding up recovery time. Farmatan has been shown to disrupt the reproductive cycle of Coccidia; and may help strengthen the intestinal wall to prevent infection, in both the cow and calf. Coronavirus Bovine Coronavirus is a ubiquitous, envelope-viral disease, causing respiratory and enteric infection. There are many serotypes for this virus, making it difficult to test for, and create a vaccine. Coronavirus can present as either diarrhea and/or respiratory illness; transmitted through nasal discharge and/or feces. Animal reservoirs continue to spread the disease, and make eradication almost impossible. Clinical disease will likely occur between days 10-14, and present for up to 4 days. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Watery • Nasal Discharge • Coughing Prevention/Treatment: Prevention is difficult due to wild animals transmitting the disease. Keeping wild animals out of animal enclosures is essential. Isolation of infected animals is critical to preventing the spread of Coronavirus. Adequate colostrum intake, along with a good vaccination program will help prevent clinical disease. Learn more about the positive effects of Farmtan's active ingredient on Coronavirus HERE. Cryptosporidium Cryptosporidium Parvum is a single-celled parasite responsible for causing infection in young calves. The infection takes place within the first four weeks of a calves' life, afterwards immunity has developed within the calf. The parasite is either passed from the cow or spread through infected water sources. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Watery, Bloody, Mucus present • Colic • Depression Prevention/Treatment: Good sanitary conditions, especially clean water is essential in preventing transmission of cryptosporidium. Isolation of sick calves will help reduce the effect on the overall herd. There is some good effect of calves given adequate colostrum, however this is likely helping by reducing other pathogenic loads rather than a direct effect on Cryptosporidium, itself. Farmatan fed prior to calving has been shown to disrupt the life-cycle and reduce transmission from the cow. The direct action of Farmatan on the parasite makes it an excellent choice for treating calves. Learn more about the positive effect of Farmatan's active ingredient HERE. E. Coli Escherichia Coli is a bacterial infection that affects calves within the first week of their life. The bacteria colonize in the lower intestine and produce a toxin. The toxin causes excessive secretion of fluids. The zoonotic disease has special importance in food safety and human health. Colostrum and natural immunity are often not sufficient in preventing infection in cases of high bacterial concentrations. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Creamy, Yellow • Abdominal Pains • Fever • Vomiting Prevention/Treatment: The best prevention methods for E. Coli include: clean water, dry bedding/environment, isolation of infected animals, and vaccination. Treatment with antibiotics and oral fluids have great benefits in reducing clinical symptoms of the disease. Farmatan has been shown to reduce bacterial load and help prevent infection. Learn more about the positive effects of Farmatan's active ingredient HERE. Rotavirus Rotavirus in calves is caused by a virus belonging to the Reoviridae family, as a non-enveloped RNA virus. Rotavirus is thought to be the most common cause of neonatal diarrhea in calves. The virus tends to affect calves between the age of 1-day-old up to a month, with most cases presenting within the first week of life. Shedding and reinfection can happen in older calves and cows. Clinical symptoms are rarely present after the first month of life; older animals tend to either be carriers or asymptomatic. The majority of herds have some level present, with transmission likely happening during or shortly after birth. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Pale Yellow, Bloody • Dehydrated • Dull calves • Reluctant to drink Prevention/Treatment: The ideal scenario is to prevent infection through, sanitary facilities (calving barn), outdoor calf housing, and a good vaccination program. Colostrum will provide much needed antibodies, protecting the calf before their immune system is fully developed to combat the disease. Farmatan fed prior to calving can help reduce the pathogen load of the cow, reducing the likelihood of transmission. Farmatan supplemented in the milk has been shown to decrease the virus' ability to cause infection and clinical disease. The best treatment for calves already presenting clinical disease is to administer oral fluids/electrolytes to rehydrate the calf. Learn more about the positive effect of Farmatan's active ingredient HERE. Salmonella Salmonella infection of cattle is caused by a variety of species within the family. While the disease is uncommon in cattle with little effect on calf health, it has massive implications for human health and food safety. The bacteria spreads through direct contact or contaminated feed & water. This disease is highly regulated by the USDA. The most severe cases of salmonella affect calves between the ages of 7-10 days old. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Bloody (flakes of slough tissue), Watery, Mucus present • Lethargic • Fever Prevention/Treatment: Prevention is always the best option: provide clean water, feed, and bedding. Isolate infected animals, ensure adequate colostrum intake, and develop a vaccination program with your veterinarian. Treatment with antibiotics and fluids (oral or intravenous) greatly increases the survival rate of calves infected with Salmonella. Farmatan has been shown to help reduce the likelihood of infection by protecting the gut, and reduce recovery time of infected animals.  LEARN MORE ABOUT IMOGENE INGREDIENTS  PRODUCTS Paul Mitchell & Paul Martin on RFD TV Rural American Live!  FEATURING Chris Wasem, Wasem Red Angus https://www.wasemredangus.com/ @WasemReds   Paul Mitchell Imogene Ingredients https://www.imogeneingredients.com/farmatanusa @farmatanusa   Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/   @StoneXGroupInc      Mark Van Zee  Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime   Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos Questions & Concerns From The Field? There they raised their family and lots of sheep and cattle. Jim was one of 11 children and learned to love cattle from his Dad, which he passed down to his sons. In 2011, Jim, Twyla, Travis and Brady moved south of Starbuck to start their ranch, Clear Springs Cattle Company. This is when the family transitioned from Limousin to Simmental. They then teamed up with Hook Farms to start marketing genetics under the Bred For Balance brand. The Ranch Located on the Glacial Ridge, surrounded by rolling prairie and oak savannas, Clear Springs has a unique landscape for Minnesota. The namesake is the many natural springs they have captured to water the cattle, providing them with some of the cleanest water in the world. Every acre is managed with soil health in mind, from intensive rotation on the pastureland to no till and cover crops practiced on the farmland. The vacation rental house on the ranch allows us to share our beautiful views and rural lifestyle with others. The Herd Grown mainly from the Hook Farms herd, the current CLRS cowherd is "bred for balance". Balance between genotype and physical traits, balance throughout their EPD profiles, and balance within the offering having both maternal and terminal oriented bulls. The latest tools and technology are used to further advance the genetics of the herd as well as good ol' cowboy logic. They strive to graze as long as possible each year and develop seedstock with longevity in mind. The Wulf family, along with their affiliates Highland Acres, Anderson Cattle and Trails End market yearling bulls and select females through the Bred for Balance sale held each February.   BEEF ANTITRUST LITIGATION GETS MORE ENTRIES According to Meating Place, The Big Four beef packing companies face yet another four lawsuits accusing them of conspiring to “fix, raise, stabilize and/or maintain the price of beef” sold to retailers since 2015, according to the documents in filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York last week. The New York cases mirror allegations leveled in lawsuits filed over the last few months in North Carolina and Illinois, and a case filed in 2022 by several quick-service restaurant chains. The Illinois case and those that were filed earlier have been transferred to the Minnesota District Court to be consolidated with other, similar antitrust cases in Multidistrict Litigation. All of those lawsuits resemble previous litigation against beef packers that garnered settlements in the tens of millions of dollars, at the same time that the Department of Justice and Congress scrutinized their practices.  In the most recent New York-based cases, BJ's Wholesale Club Inc., Gordon Food Service Inc. and Glazer Foods Co.,  Quality Supply Chain Co-Op Inc. (QSCC) and Target Corp., all accused Cargill Inc., JBS S.A., National Beef Packing Co. and Tyson Foods Inc. of coordinating or manipulating beef prices to levels they would not have reached without the alleged actions, according to court documents. The separate filings also accuse several operating affiliates of the four processors of participating in the alleged violations of the Sherman Act through “anticompetitive means” concerning the price of boxed and case-ready meat. The four defendants sold approximately 80% of the more than 25 million pounds of fresh and frozen beef sold in the U.S. market in 2018 alone, each of the similar suits claim. The latest lawsuits also all cite efforts by the U.S. Department of Justice and USDA in 2020 to investigate allegations of beef pricing practices among the current defendants going back to at least the beginning of 2015. EPISODE 157 DETAILS Your questions are always welcome here at The Ranch It Up Radio Show.  One of our listeners from Missouri texted us in regard to last week's program.  We featured Doug Bichler from Bichler Simmentals in South Central North Dakota.  He already had a very successful seedstock operation supplying Simmental and SimAngus Genetics.  His accident in 2017 caused him and his family to re-evaluate how they were running their cattle, the efficiency of bloodlines, and the predictability of the bulls being offered for sale each year.  This caused the operation to transition from a winter and spring calving cowherd to a summer calving cowherd.  They changed from selling Spring Yearling Bulls each February to selling Virgin Long Yearling Bulls in November.  David from Missouri was wondering how to care for these fall yearling bulls and how it is different from caring for spring yearling bulls.  We bring Doug to answer more questions about managing new herd sire prospects. We start a new segment where you, our listeners get to nominate a person, farm/ranch, business, product, horse, dog, etc, that does not matter for our weekly Ranch It Up Radio Show Top Hand.  Today, we relieve our very first winner. Not to mention the weekly market recap with Kirk Donsbach with Stone X Financial, Inc.  We have it all for you in this jam-packed episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show!  As always Tigger & BEC and the Ranch It Up crew dive into the latest agriculture news, rodeo action not to miss, and cover the cattle markets. HOW TO MANAGE YOUR NEW HERD SIRE We spend all that time trying to find the perfect bull for our operation.  And now congratulations!  You found him and got him purchased in your price range.  Now what?  Learn how to manage your new herd sires and how to get them through the cold months on into breeding season. BICHLER SIMMENTALS The Program:  The Bichler Simmentals ranch is owned and operated by Doug and Maria Bichler, representing the third generation to farm the land and live on the homestead. Since the farm's inception in 1920, the Bichler family has strived to care for the land and their animals to the best of their ability. And, in 2022 that core value has never wavered. The program has grown significantly in the past 17 years. Since they began their production sale in 2005, they have been able to not only increase the number of bulls and females offered but also create more genetic and phenotypic consistent cattle. They use AI and embryo transfer extensively to ensure they are propagating the best genetics. The ranch is located in south central North Dakota and consists of 250 mother cows which are comprised of both registered and commercial females. Commercial females are utilized in the ET program.  The Philosophy:  Their philosophy is that quality is always centered around the cowherd. This is why they cull heavily for not only performance and genetics but for relevant traits important to customers such as disposition, udder quality, and structural soundness. Any females failing to meet these requirements are either moved into the recipient herd or are simply culled. The Bichler family believes the best-performing cattle are moderately framed, easy fleshing, and deep-bodied and you will see this in the cattle they produce. They flush superior cows in the herd to produce superior females which in turn are mated to produce bulls for the purebred and commercial producers alike. RANCH IT UP RADIO SHOW TOP HAND We are starting a new feature here on the Ranch It Up Radio Show.  Each week a particular operation, business, person, outfit, bull, dog, it does not matter, is highlighted as Tigger & BEC approved, and they are the Top Hand of the Week.  You can nominate any operation just send us an email of who or what you are nominating and why you are nominating.  Today our Top Hand is JYJ Red Angus of Columbia, Alabama.  Jim and Jessica Yance. Jim became very interested in the Red Angus breed 23 years ago when he visited R.A. Brown Ranch in Throckmorton, Texas. As a result, he bought his first Red Angus bulls and set out to transform a very hodge-podge herd of commercial cattle into a very impressive, uniform, highly marketable calf crop. After graduating from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, he returned to the family farm with a passion for rebuilding the farm's cowherd, and in just a few years was able to utilize breed-leading Red Angus genetics to do just that: Produce and market outstanding feeder cattle, and make replacement females that grew into a productive and prolific red cowherd. When Jim married his wife, Jessica, they knew they wanted to contribute to the well-established, family operation, Yance Farms, Inc., built by Jim's grandfather, Clarence Yance, and his father, Terry Yance. With their blessing and support, along with the mentorship of Donnell Brown from R.A. Brown Ranch, they began their journey into the Red Angus seedstock business as JYJ Red Angus, LLC. The Yance's purchased their first Red Angus females in October 2006, which is also when the Brown Family invited them to join their cooperator team. Today, 17 years later, the Yance Family is more committed than ever to producing and marketing superior Red Angus genetics through biannual sales in Throckmorton, Texas. While the majority of the spring or fall-born bulls travel almost 1,000 miles to be feed efficiency tested, developed, and marketed in Texas, the Yance's realized that's not a feasible marketing plan for the rest of their seedstock cattle. The growth of their herd over these 17 years has created the need to better manage grass, cattle inventory, and time. That's what led them to share their program through our first production sale. Their first sale literally happening as speak.  Check them out at JYJ Red Angus and follow along on Facebook.   FEATURING Jim Yance JYJ Red Angus @jyjredangus https://www.jyjredangus.com/   Doug Bichler Bichler Simmentals @bichlersimmentals https://bichlersimmentals.com/   Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos   Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/   @StoneXGroupInc      Mark Van Zee  Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime   Questions & Concerns From The Field? Thought For Today

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Tuesday morning, the 15th of November 2022, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.“Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Romans 5:5Hope does not disappoint. Faith is for now, hope is for the future. Hope is faith in the future tense. Isn't that beautiful? Hope is grief's best music. That's right - don't give up. People who have hope are people who have patience. I think John Calvin said that. They are prepared to wait for their miracle. People who lose hope become very impatient, and very erratic and they do things in desperation, and then normally mess it up completely. Many years ago, I went to Underberg. It is about maybe three or four hours drive from our farm, Shalom, to purchase a beautiful Simmental bull from the late Cedric Taylor. I went with my truck to load him up. Cedric wasn't there but he had asked his staff to help me load. We got there and this magnificent bull weighed over a ton. This bull could have pushed any international rugby pack around the field with no problem at all. He was a beast of an animal but the harder the staff tried to load this bull, the angrier he became and he would not load. The staff started losing hope and so did I, and then all of a sudden I heard the pick-up arrive and old Mr Taylor got out. He was not a very big man but he had massive hands and he said, “Boys, just stand back a bit.” Quietly, with patience and lots of hope, he walked up to the bull and started quietly speaking to the bull and rubbing him on his back. Quietly and gently the bull walked straight onto the back of the truck. We closed the tailgate and we drove home.Be patient, do not lose hope. Trust in Jesus and He will do it for you!Have a wonderful day,Jesus bless you and goodbye.
