Send us Fan MailIn this episode, we are joined by two women who gave the best years of their careers to Pan American World Airways, and who have remained close friends for more than four decades since the airline closed its doors.Florette H. Vassall was born in New York City, the daughter of immigrants from Cuba and Panama. Aviation was a constant in her life from the very beginning. Her father was passionate about flight, and as a young girl, Florette watched Pan Am's famous flying boats cross the sky above New York City, an impression that would last a lifetime. Then the war came. Her father was drafted into the Army and assigned as an air traffic controller because of his background in radio, while her mother served as an officially designated air raid warden. Those years brought challenges that went well beyond the war itself. In 1967, Florette was looking for a job that came with travel benefits so she could visit friends she had made while living in Acapulco, Mexico. Pan American World Airways hired her. Perhaps it was not entirely a coincidence. What started as a practical decision became a 24-year career. Florette worked as a ticket agent, trainer, and supervisor at the Pan Am Building in the heart of midtown Manhattan, right up until the airline shut down in Miami in December 1991. For more than two decades, she was a fixture at Counter Vanderbilt, the largest ticket counter in the world at the time. Customers, employees, company visitors, special guests, and board members all knew her by name. The 59-story Pan Am Building, constructed between 1960 and 1963 above Grand Central Station, was the largest commercial office space in the world by square footage when it opened on March 7, 1963. Pan Am founder Juan Trippe had signed a 25-year lease for 613,000 square feet, and the airline occupied 15 floors. Listeners who heard Episode 10 will recall the late Richard Roth Jr., whose family firm Emery Roth & Sons worked alongside Walter Gropius and Pietro Belluschi to bring the building to life. Richard passed away in late 2022 at the age of 89, just one year after sharing his remarkable firsthand account with this program.Florette is a retired teacher, a former model, and an actress. For more than 40 years she has produced multicultural arts and culture programming for television in New York City. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham University and is the author of the chapter titled "The Pan Am Building" in the book Pan Am: Personal Tributes to a Global Aviation Pioneer, compiled by Jeff Kriendler and James Patrick Baldwin. At 91 years young, she has never stopped.Diane Krumholtz Lyras began her Pan Am career on January 24, 1977, hired as a Clerk Stenographer in Labor Relations. She went on to work in Reservations as a Sales Agent, then as a Sales Account Manager serving the White Plains and Long Island markets, before returning to the Pan Am Building as Manager of Administration for the Northeast Division, and ultimately as Manager of Administration for the United States Division. Like Florette, she was there until the end, leaving in August 1991.Listeners who heard Episode 27 will remember Diane from one of the most difficult chapters in Pan Am's history. On September 5, 1986, Pan Am Flight 73 was hijacked on the ground in Karachi, Pakistan, in an act of senseless violence that left 20 people dead and more than 100 injured. Diane Krumholtz Lyras, then of the White Plains Pan Am sales office, was sent to Karachi as part of the company's crisis response team to assist staff and families in the aftermath. Diane also serves on the board of the Pan Am Museum Foundation.Florette and Diane met inside the Pan Am Building in 1980 and became fast friends. L'odio non avrà mai posto a New York», dichiarò allora Hochul.

Two pairs of everything — body parts — turn up in three southern counties before anyone thinks to ask the quiet woman on the hog farm what was buried out behind the barn.EPISODE PAGE (includes list of sources): https://weirddarkness.com/noir-twopairsofeverythingTHE REAL CASE BEHIND THIS STORY: THE VIOLA HYATT CASE (1959, ALABAMA)Viola Hyatt was a 30-year-old farm woman living with her father Martin on a hog farm near White Plains, Alabama. Raised by a cruel, sickly mother who told her daily she was a curse, Viola grew up isolated, heavy-set, and physically strong from butchering the family's hogs herself — a job she took over from her father as a teenager. When her father rented a small trailer on the property to two construction workers — brothers Emmett and Lee Harper, both WWII veterans (one a Bataan Death March survivor) — the arrangement turned ugly. The brothers sexually abused Viola, beat her father when he objected, and treated the family with contempt. Viola endured it for months. On the morning of June 27, she loaded her father's 12-gauge shotgun, walked to the trailer, and shot both men in the face. She then used the double-bit axe from the barn to dismember the bodies, loaded the parts into the brothers' own 1957 Ford, and drove all night through three Alabama counties — Calhoun, Etowah, and Cleburne — scattering arms, legs, and torsos along roadsides, in briar patches, and in the Tallapoosa River. The bodies were so disfigured that police couldn't identify them for 17 days. They called the victims "Mr. X" and "Mr. Y." The case broke when the construction foreman recognized police sketches and connected them to a phone call Viola had made claiming the brothers were tending to a sick mother. Police found blood in the trunk of the car, the buried axe, and damage to the trailer door — and after a six-hour interrogation, Viola confessed. She was evaluated at Brice Mental Hospital, found sane, and pled guilty in March of the following year to avoid the electric chair. She received a life sentence. She never explained her motive beyond saying the abuse "wasn't the main reason" — it was "worse than that." She refused interviews for the rest of her life. Paroled in 1970, she lived quietly in a trailer park until her death in 1992, taking whatever the full story was to the grave.WeirdDarkness® is a registered trademark. The federal murder trial of Nicholas Tartaglione unfolded over several weeks in White Plains, New York, with prosecutors presenting him as a violent ex-cop who used his law enforcement background to run a cocaine trafficking operation through intimidation and murder. The government argued that Tartaglione believed one of the victims, Martin Luna, had stolen drug money from him, leading to a deadly ambush in 2016. Jurors were shown surveillance footage, cellphone location data, forensic evidence, and testimony from cooperating witnesses who described how Luna and three other men were lured to a bar before being brutally killed. Prosecutors said Tartaglione personally participated in the beatings and murders before burying the bodies on his property in Orange County. The defense tried to attack the credibility of government witnesses and argued that Tartaglione was being unfairly blamed by cooperating criminals seeking lighter sentences, but the prosecution steadily built a timeline that jurors ultimately accepted. The trial became even more high-profile because of Tartaglione's later connection to Jeffrey Epstein at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, where the two briefly shared a jail unit before Epstein's death. That association kept Tartaglione's name circulating in national media coverage long after the murders themselves. After deliberations, the jury convicted Tartaglione on every major count, including murder, kidnapping, narcotics conspiracy, and murder-for-hire related charges. Federal prosecutors described the killings as calculated executions driven by greed and paranoia, while the judge condemned the sheer brutality of the crimes during sentencing. In 2024, Tartaglione received four consecutive life sentences plus additional prison time, ensuring he will spend the rest of his life in federal custody without any realistic possibility of release.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

Library recounts war story of local family patriot Sitting onstage and decked out in brownish historical garb, Chapin Fish wore one black Adidas sneaker with white stripes as a mutton-chopped storyteller, Jonathan Kruk, reeled off highlights from the new Desmond-Fish Public Library exhibit, Nicholas Fish: Choosing Liberty, in dramatic fashion. On his other foot, Fish, a recent graduate of Fordham University with a degree in American studies, wore a white boot because of a foot injury. He otherwise hobbled around on crutches, adding a touch of irony to the proceedings, which celebrated his ancestor, who got "sick in camp" at the Battle of White Plains in 1776 and suffered a wound during the Battle of Monmouth. Despite those setbacks, Nicholas Fish played a prominent role in the Continental Army's leadership, fighting alongside George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Benedict Arnold and the Marquis de Lafayette. Many other members of his family were Loyalists who remained faithful to the monarchy, says Anita Prentice, the library board chair, who wrote a 40-page biography that spearheaded the project. The exhibit began as a slow burn in 2019, when the library received a portrait of the war hero, now on display. Nicholas Fish's saga stretches from a 1775 raid by the Sons of Liberty and a Columbia University militia on British guns in Manhattan to the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. When the war formally ended in 1783, Fish rode with Washington to attend a banquet for Continental Army officers before they disbanded at Fraunces Tavern in Manhattan. Six years later, he again accompanied the general to Federal Hall on Wall Street, serving as an eyewitness to the first president's swearing-in. In 1824, Nicholas reunited with an old pal, Lafayette, who was making a triumphant tour of the nation, including the Hudson Valley. (His visit to Beacon is commemorated by a blue-and-gold plaque at the waterfront.) During the Revolutionary War, Nicholas visited Philipstown often but never established ties, says Prentice. He was a regular at the Beverly Robinson house, which served as Washington's headquarters (it was on Route 9D south of Route 403 but burned down in 1892), and often ferried to West Point. After the war, Fish rattled around New York City (his birthplace), abandoned by his family and "struggling with PTSD, I'd imagine," says Prentice, a retired history teacher. "He fought for eight straight years with no time off, longer than Washington, because he had nowhere else to go." Things turned out OK. Fish raised five children, including his eldest son, Hamilton, born in 1808, four years after his namesake died in a duel. Hamilton Fish made a lasting impression, serving as New York governor, a U.S. senator and secretary of state under President Ulysses S. Grant. The now-abandoned home at Glenclyffe, dating to the 1850s, became one of the family's three mansions and their local foothold. The meat of the Desmond-Fish exhibit is 15 wall panels packed with information and punctuated by portraits, illustrations and paintings. Artifacts include Nicholas Fish's hefty bible and some of his silverware. After the portrait donation, Prentice thought the library would need two or three panels to tell Fish's war story. "But he went wire to wire and participated in almost every major battle and incident, and his story is much more amazing than I ever could have imagined," she says. The Desmond-Fish Public Library, at 472 Route 403 in Garrison, is open daily. See desmondfishlibrary.org. The exhibit continues through June 15. The library will host the Hearts of Oak Reenactors from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday (May 9).

Ron in Pittsburgh calls in with an intriguing idea surrounding wind energy. As the U.S. moves away from wind power, Ron suggests that the shift could create an unexpected opportunity for Cuba, potentially benefiting the island nation as the global energy landscape continues to evolve. Paul in White Plains calls in to raise an important question: if the U.S. agrees to pay Iran a fee for ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, does that amount to legitimizing or emboldening the Iranian regime? Paul wonders whether such a payment could be perceived as a form of international validation for Iran.

Patriot Power Podcast - The American Revolution, Founding Fathers and 18th Century History
Episode 62 • My Ancestor Survived 1776: Peter Kern and the Pennsylvania Flying CampIn this episode of Patriot Power Podcast, I share the deeply personal story that reshaped how I understand the American Revolution.Peter Kern, my fifth great-grandfather, served in the Pennsylvania Flying Camp during the most dangerous year of the war, 1776. His service placed him in the chaos of the Battle of Long Island, the retreat north under George Washington, the desperate fighting at White Plains, and the collapse of Fort Washington, moments when the Revolution nearly ended before it truly began. This is not a story of famous generals or easy victories. It is the story of ordinary men who endured defeat, retreat, hunger, uncertainty, and the constant threat of capture, then returned home to rebuild their communities when the fighting ended. It is also the story of a family, the Kern brothers, who served in different ways through the Flying Camp and Pennsylvania militia, showing how the Revolution was carried by families and neighbors, not just armies.Standing at Peter Kern's grave and walking through the remains of his grist mill changed history from something I studied into something I inherited. This episode explores that transformation, and why remembering these quieter stories matters just as much as remembering the famous ones.Show Links to Click:1776 BookValley Forge Search By NameALL links below are clickable within your podcast platform, so enjoy!________• Patriot Power Podcast Website• The Young Patriots Series - Children's Book Series• Email Me• TikTok - Patriot Power Freedom Files• InstaGram• YouTube Channel• Meet your Host, Ron Kern_______________Please share this podcast with others and we would love for you to leave a review.Do you have a question, comment or suggestion?
