The decision to cut someone out of your life—whether a parent, a sibling, or a once-close friend—can feel both deeply necessary and impossibly fraught. But why does going no contact inspire so much shame, confusion, and second-guessing, especially when it's often a tool for self-preservation? What does it really mean to choose absence over obligation? In this episode, host Amanda Montell (@amanda_montell) is joined by Jeanette Tran, a professor at Drake University who explores the complexities of estrangement through an unexpected lens: Shakespeare. Drawing from centuries-old drama, Jeanette helps us parse why going no contact still feels so taboo, how literature mirrors (and sometimes distorts) our ideas of family and forgiveness, and why choosing peace can be the most radical act of all. The Trombone Corner Podcast is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass and The Brass Ark.  Join hosts Noah and John as they interview Nick Lane, commercial trombonist from Los Angeles.   About Nick: Nick Lane is a free lance trombonist, arranger & composer who's been a fixture on the Los Angeles music scene for many years. Born and raised in Marshalltown Iowa, he attended Drake University on a euphonium scholarship after high school. More excited by performance and jazz, he transferred to Boston's Berklee College of Music to pursue trombone and music composition. Soon after graduating he joined Maynard Ferguson's band and spent the next 4 years honing his skills, recording 5 albums and 17 of his arrangements and/or compositions with Maynard. After moving to L.A. Lane formed his own band resulting in the “Bone in the USA” album in 1985. By that time he'd been asked to do several long tours with Rod Stewart and then Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. So his band leader days transitioned into side man days, touring extensively with Stewart and later the Who (Quadraphenia) Neil Diamond, Etta James, among others. For the past 20+ years, he's often filled in with the group Chicago. When NOT traveling, Lane has found his way onto over 500 CD recordings as well as hundreds of TV shows & movies. His arrangements & compositions have been featured in all mediums. He has released 2 more CD's of his music….Alias Smith & Lane with baritone sax pal Greg Smith and a B-3 organ trio and Songs of the Heartland….a CD of music Lane composed for the Central Iowa Music Festival featuring full orchestra and chorus. It's Nick's fascination with melody and harmony that has inspired his continuing song writing and composing efforts. In more classical settings he has written extensively for brass: large ensemble, brass quintet, trombone quartet & trio plus numerous commissions for various groups and individuals. With writing partner Doc Kupka, several songs have found their way onto recent Tower of Power CD's as well as projects with vocalists Ray Greene and Ellis Hall. (Available on Strokeland Records website) Lane continues to write, record & produce horn sections in the pop, rock & R&B genres. Still not afraid to “shake it” on stage, these days he's more often found in a recording studio, trying to capture the moment.

Join Sarah Noll Wilson and guest Dr. Julie Ressler as they explore the imposter phenomenon in men. Topics including the impacts of family, gender, and culture, and how leaders can make a difference by embracing recognition and open conversations. About Our Guest Dr. Julie Ressler decided early on, around the age of 9, that she wanted to be a teacher, however exactly what kind of a teacher wasn't established until later in life. Growing up in northeast Iowa, her passion for education and helping people grow and learn was influenced by her parent's chosen professions of high school teacher and business owner. Observing these two amazing role models encouraged her to pursue a career as a teacher of adults-which in her words are “little kids” in bigger bodies. Over the past thirty years, she has been a proud member of the Des Moines community working in banking and insurance in various corporate training roles. She is currently the AVP-Insurance Operations Training at Athene USA, where she leads a talented team of performance improvement professionals. She earned a B.S. from Iowa State University and a master's degree from Drake University, both in adult education. She's certified in Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Prosci Change Management. Julie completed her doctorate degree in educational leadership from Drake University, May of 2024. Her greatest accomplishments include raising two daughters and a son. Lauren (29) is a school psychologist with the Juneau, Alaska school district, Madelyn (27), a graphic designer at Athene in Des Moines, and her 22-year-old son, CJ served as an Army Ranger and is currently pursuing a degree to serve as an anesthesia nurse practitioner. Throughout her teaching career, she served as an organist and director of youth/adult choirs in local churches. In 2003, Patti was contacted by St. Olaf College to see if she would take a student teacher. The answer was yes, of course. That student teacher was Jocelyn Hagen. The favor was returned when Jocelyn served as a mentor for Patti's compositions and arrangements.   In 2010, Patti commissioned Jocelyn to compose a children's choir piece in memory of Teresa Benjamin, Assistant Director of the Robbinsdale Elementary Honor Choir. Teresa passed away in the spring of 2003. This composition, “I Started Out Singing,” has become very popular in recent years.   Keeping in touch with her elementary music roots, she serves as an adjunct professor at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota, instructing elementary education majors on teaching and integrating music into their future classrooms.   Patti lives in the Twin Cities area with her husband, Rolland, where she enjoys outdoor activities, traveling and cooking. This week, I was delighted to be joined by two New York Times best-selling novelists who happen to live right here in Arizona & both of whom I met through Barbara Peters' wonderful world-famous independent Poisoned Pen Bookshop in Scottsdale. Jenn McKinlay is the award-winning bestselling author of several mystery & romance series & her work has been translated into multiple languages & in countries all over the world. Hard at work on her next books, Jenn's latest releases include LOVE AT FIRST BOOK, FONDANT FUMBLE, & her upcoming holiday-themed mystery A MERRY LITTLE MURDER PLOT is available on October 8. Paige Shelton had a nomadic childhood, as her father's job as a football coach took the family to seven different towns before she was twelve years old. After college at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, Paige moved to Salt Lake City, where she thought she'd only stay a few years, but she fell in love with the mountains & a great guy who became her husband. In 2015, her family moved to Arizona. In addition to the SCOTTISH BOOKSHOP MYSTERIES, she also writes the ALASKA WILD book series which began with THIN ICE. Her other series include the FARMERS' MARKET, COOKING SCHOOL, & DANGEROUS TYPE mysteries. PERFECT STORM, the sixth ALASKA WILD series title will be out on December 3, 2024, & WRITTEN IN STONE, the 10th SCOTTISH BOOKSHOP mystery is coming to stores on April 1, 2025.Given that not only do Jenn & Paige adore libraries & indie bookstores like Poisoned Pen but they also write mysteries set in bookshops, the idea of doing an episode centered on our love of books, movies, & bookshop movies seemed like a perfect fit! Warm, breezy, funny, & fast-paced, in addition to discussing the films DESK SET, 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD, & YOU'VE GOT MAIL, this wide-ranging episode touches on everything from their love of literature to the writing process itself. Social support networks, whether from family, friends, or healthcare professionals, are critical for those processing genetic test results or managing their risk for ALS/FTD. The importance of integrating psychological care into the predictive genetic testing process to support individuals facing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Since 1986 Mr. Vasquez has been the founder of industry changing companies in the United States. A software developer by training, after spending 6 years with AT&T Corporate, Vasquez founded ISAC, a computer consulting firm in 1986. Vasquez wrote the software that automated Ladies Home Journal Magazine in 1987. Until then, the magazine was done on typewriters. Mr. Vasquez merged ISAC into PACE Health Management which developed the first electronic medical record system to go public on NASDAQ that used expert systems and artificial intelligence neural networks to develop clinical pathways that supported clinicians taking patients from admission to discharge. The company was later sold to 3M Healthcare. Mr. Vasquez founded CareMedic Systems – the first real time processing system for hospital Medicare Part A claims. In 2000, the Mayo Clinic Foundation purchased 5% of the company and by 2004, CareMedic software was serving 1,500+ hospitals in America. The company was sold in 2005 to United Healthcare and continues today as a product of Optum. Mr. Vasquez and his wife founded St Gregory Retreat Centers for people suffering from substance abuse. St Gregory developed a proprietary cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program and served 10,000+ addicted patients with 25% of those patients addicted to heroin or prescription painkillers. Unique to St Gregory, Mr. Vasquez worked with research physicians to understand, develop, and deliver an intravenous body chemistry solution to reduce or eliminate cravings for opioids. Delivered to over 2,000 patients by 14,000 treatments with almost no adverse effects, the result was 84% of patients were still alive, sober and working after 48 months. To complement this solution, Mr. Vasquez also developed and built a complex mass-spectrometer laboratory with unique panels that could identify metabolites of opioids as recovering patients required undeniable oversite. The company was  sold to a venture capital roll-up, Summit BHC in September 2018.After interviewing hundreds of opiate and heroin addicted patients, Vasquez saw a constant theme where patients had become dependent due to prescriptions provided for acute or chronic pain, primarily orthopedic in nature. In an effort to reduce opioid prescribing, Vasquez founded Harbor View Medical, which provided orthopedic stem cell procedures developed by Regenexx© as a non-invasive alternative for people who were facing orthopedic surgery and potential long-term opioid prescriptions. Mr. Vasquez was successful in getting local self-insured health plans to include coverage for these procedures. Harbor View Medical was merged into Regenexx© in 2017.In January 2018, Opioid Clinical Management, Inc was founded by Mr. Vasquez in response to the dramatic opioid epidemic and the national need for a solution. OPCM has developed proprietary software algorithms (patent pending) and integrated provider management to allow large self-insured employers to identify physicians who are over-prescribing opioids and employees that are struggling from resulting opioid abuse. There are 1,700 employer health plans that use OPCM software. In 2000 Mr Vasquez was named Ernst & Young “Entrepreneur of the Year” and inducted into the Entrepreneur of the Year “Hall of Fame'' He received his Executive Health Management Certificate, Harvard School of Public Health and attended the U.S. Air Force Academy and Drake University.Topics covered in this episode:Opioid Addiction Treatment StrategiesEarly Intervention Opioid Addiction DevelopmentDefinitions of AddictionWithdrawal Symptoms Treatment ApproachesPersonal Motivation and JourneyRole of Faith in RecoveryReferenced in the episode:The Lindsey Elmore Show Ep 276 | Why Drug Prices Keep Rising: Pharmacists Perspectives | Patrick DevereuxThe Lindsey Elmore Show Ep 174 | Overcoming Political Influence on Healthcare | John AbramsonTo learn more about Michael Vasquez and his work, head over to www.michael-vasquez.com__________________________________________________________In Michael Vasquez's books, he allows readers to explore the complex challenge that is posed by the opioid crisis in the United States.
