The husband-and-wife duo from South Carolina specialize in rootsy, bluesy rock, Americana, and alt-country, but they don't confine themselves to traditional two-piece arrangements. They switch off on vocal, guitar, percussion, and synth duty throughout their shows, orchestrating a full-band ruckus with all available limbs.Their seventh full-length, Something Is Working Up Above My Head, released in September last year, and while touring in support of it, they stopped at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl in late February. PG's John Bohlinger caught up with Trent before the gig to see what tools he and Hearst use to maintain their musical juggling act.Shop Shovel & Rope's Gear:Gretsch Black Falcon - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/YRnPxOGibson J-45 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/PyY7WXFender Blues Junior - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/7aOq73Universal Audio OX Amp Top Box - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/rQzyVBDunlop Max-Grip Picks - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/LKmBqaMXR Blue Box - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/qzx93nElectro-Harmonix Nano Big Muff - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/jrPr2nEarthQuaker Devices Hummingbird - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/xL5a3kBoss OC-5 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/vNOonLWalrus Canvas Tuners - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/6eDxb3Walrus Canvas Passive Re-Amp - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/9LzDPeRadial J48 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/raDr3GMesa/Boogie Stowaway Compact Input Buffer - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/jey03nKorg microKORG Synthesizer - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/kOME3MElectro-Harmonix Bass9 Bass Machine Pedal - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/e1EXMgElectro-Harmonix Holy Grail Nano Reverb Pedal - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/q4k2MnRadial ProDI - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/GmW3x6Electro-Harmonix Mel9 Tape Replay Machine Pedal - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/6eK2WKTruetone 1 SPOT Pro - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/aOAVmjRadial ProD2 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/PyqVbN Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/shovels-and-ropeSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPGDon't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar0:00 - Molly Tuttle & D'Addario0:15 - Shovels & Rope Playing Intro0:43 - John Bohlinger Intro0:54 - Gretsch G6636T Players Edition Falcon Double-Cut Bigsby2:21 - Developing the Duo's Massive Live Sound4:50 - Gibson J-456:27 - Loar & Recording King Guitars7:04 - Shovels & Rope Pedalboard10:52 - Rig Rundown & D'Addario11:25 - Electro-Harmonix Nano Big Muff12:46 - Thing 1 & Thing 2 microKORGs & Roland PK5 Controller17:39 - Shovels & Rope's Amps: Fender Blues Junior & Fender Rumble20:05 - Shovels & Rope's Strings, Tunings & Picks23:22 - Recording 2024's Something Is Working Up Above My Head26:40 - D'Addario[Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rr]© Copyright Gearhead Communications LLC, 2025#guitar...

Shovels and Rope is a folk rock duo made up of Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent. Over the last decade they've put out 6 full length records, along with many live recordings and other projects. Their sound is unique, and catchy. It's pop-oriented without sound derivative. Their harmonies and beautiful and sometimes dissonant, but always seem to get stuck in your head. Their most recent album is called “Manticore” and it's fantastic. I had a chance to talk with the duo recently about their album. I hope ya dig it!
Musicians Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst talk about their band Shovels & Rope's new album "Manticore." The album features a number of songs about relationships and family. And, American broadcasters were quiet on LGBTQ representation during the Olympics — even with a record number of openly LGBTQ Olympic athletes. Olympic skeleton racer Andrew Blaser joins us.
Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent make up this Charleston SC duo who are perennially at the vanguard of roots music.
My guests on today’s podcast are Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent of the band Shovels & Rope. Most of the songs featured in this episode are from their latest album, Busted Jukebox Vol. 3, which you can buy at your local record store or download on Bandcamp.I was thinking back to 2012, when I interviewed them for a profile in the Charleston City Paper. They were hugely popular in Charleston at the time, and after years of relentless touring they were finally breaking into the national scene for folk and Americana music. They were a little self-conscious about the first taste of success, which seemed like a good indicator that they wouldn’t let it go to their heads.I got to see one of their last hometown shows before they really blew up, and it still ranks as one of my favorite concerts ever. It was a scorching August night at the Pour House, a James Island bar, and people were sweating and screaming and dancing their asses off in the crowd.Onstage, Cary Ann and Michael were sweaty and delirious as the rest of us, stripped down to their undershirts and singing their guts out. They took turns keeping rhythm on a drumset that looked like it had been salvaged from the side of the road. It was bandaged together with duct tape, and they pounded away on the snare and floor tom with a plastic maraca. They still play hometown shows, but they need a little bit more space now. They host the annual High Water Festival at a riverfront park in my neighborhood, a fact that brings me no small amount of civic pride. It’s been a vicarious thrill to watch them scrap their way into a successful career, and it was a pleasure to catch up with them about their art, their view of the world, and their adventures in parenting.Twitter // Bookshop // Bandcamp // Apple Podcasts // Spotify Podcasts This is a public episode. This week, we celebrate the newest record by Charleston's hellion harmonizers Shovels & Rope, with a new conversation with the married co-leads Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst. You'd be hard-pressed to find two harder-working singer-songwriters than this prolific duo; and that was before they got together to record their honey-voiced self-titled first album over a decade ago. Thinking it was just a sonic souvenir before they split off again to pursue their barnstorming bar-band solo careers, the human heart and some encouraging listeners had other plans, convincing them to keep creating as a team. They've been off to the races ever since - making five acclaimed records of originals starting with the acclaimed O' Be Joyful and three gritty covers albums with an assassins row of collaborators like Lucius, Shakey Graves, Brandi Carlile, The War and Treaty, and more. Their newest cover project Busted Jukebox Volume 3, which dropped on Feb 5 via Dualtone Records, is a new experiment. You could say it's an angsty rock record for kids, or maybe it's an homage to the yearning, defiant, ever-hopeful teenager in all of us. With indie-darlings like Sharon Van Etten sitting in on standouts like the Beach Boys' “In My Room” and Deer Tick joining a rollicking version of the Janis Joplin favorite “Cry Baby” - like a good Pixar animated flick, this collection has just as much to offer Mom and Dad as it does for the kiddos. If you've seen them live, you'll notice that Trent and Hearst often face each other, not the audience; their eyes never seem to leave each other. Almost all their songs, like the award-winning favorite “Birmingham,” include spot-on harmony and intensely-focused unison singing. Somehow they create a blisteringly big sound despite always remaining a duo. Even on the biggest stages, from Red Rocks to their own acclaimed festival High Water Fest (set in their longtime South Carolina home base), they stick to their simple but potent formula. Switching back and forth between jangly and crunchy guitars, humming keyboards and pounding piano, hopping from sweat-strewn stripped-down drum kits to aching accordions, their joyous garage-rock Americana keeps gaining them new fans worldwide. If you're stuck at home and have kids running rowdily through your house like Michael and Cary Ann do, (this taping had to be rescheduled three times), maybe try turning on Busted Jukebox Volume 3 nice and loud and see what little ones think. Or just put them to bed and rock out yourself! Stick around to the end of the episode to Hearst and Trent present the sweet campfire jam “My Little Buckaroo” featuring M. Ward.
Part two! LG continues her chat with Cary Ann Hearst from Shovels & Rope on this episode. They discuss the importance of having hope, the eventual bounce-back of the music industry for touring musicians, what it’s like to meet your music idols, trusty affordable guitars, tour vehicles, and more in this charming conversation from two southern rockers. Cary Ann Hearst of the band Shovels and Rope is a folk/rock musician from South Carolina. In part one of this episode, host LG asks Cary about being in a band with her husband, touring with her kids, the impact of diversity and inclusivity when booking her festival, the relief of getting the current administration out of the White House, and appreciating that victory while looking ahead to the work it will take to rebound from having an openly misogynist racist in office. This episode was recorded on the day the election was called for Biden/Harris, so if you need a celebratory good time of an episode, this one is for you. Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst have made music as Shovels & Rope for more than a decade. The South Carolina married duo's sound is rooted in classic Americana and country-folk. They add some fuzzed-out guitars and driving rock rhythms to the mix on their new album By Blood. Shovels & Rope stopped into our studio before a show at Denver's Ogden Theatre. The band played some music from the new album and chatted with Jeremy Petersen.

Well, Sunday rocked at the 30A Songwriter Festival this year, and Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent were just awesome. A description of their music "What ever it is, its both pretty and loud and tells a good story." We agree, and are thrilled to have had them here on 30A this year. www.shovelsandrope.com
Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent have spent the last decade or so singing sweetly, rowdily anthemic folk-country music together, most recently under the name Shovels & Rope. Hear them perform as part of the 2013 Newport Folk Festival.
