Join the Uplift Community App TODAY! Have you ever caught yourself holding back an idea, not because you found a better way to say it, but just to make it easier for someone else to hear? This quiet habit of downplaying what you really think or want can sneak up on you. Over time, it can make you start living smaller without even realizing it. In this episode, I share a story from a recent Catalyst retreat at Seacrest on 30A. While we sat in a circle, one woman leaned in and said something that made everyone pause. She said, "I feel like I have to pretend I don't want as much as I actually do." Her words show why this conversation is important for you as well. What You'll Learn in This Episode Why your brain, especially your amygdala, has been jumping in to manage your self‑expression and what I call the Becky effect How years of reactions to your drive or ambition trained you to soft‑edit your sentences before you speak Why the exhaustion so many women feel comes from managing what people think, not from doing too much How a faith‑rooted, grace‑centered view of ambition reshapes the way you see your calling and your wanting Three practical steps to help you notice where you adjust, say what you mean without shrinking it, and pay attention to the people who let you stay yourself fully. What if your next retreat venue was a walkable, luxury beach community on the Texas Coast — fully furnished, photographer-ready, and designed to make your attendees feel like they're living in a neighborhood instead of checking into a hotel? In this episode, Shannon sits down with Lee Ann Peters, the powerhouse behind Cinnamon Shore — a New Urbanist luxury beach community on the Texas Coast that has become one of Southern Living's Top 10 Beach Towns in the United States. Today with Jim Davis-Johnson: Jim Davis-Johnson: Build a Luxury Window Treatment Business Without a Workroom Today with Jim Davis-Johnson of Jim Davis Designs, we get into what it takes to build and run a high-end luxury window treatment business. Jim shares how he grew his company from working in his mother's South Georgia business since seventh grade to running a multimillion-dollar brand serving high-end designers and discerning clients from Atlanta to the Caribbean, all without his own workroom. We talk about the non-negotiables of serving luxury clients: how to present yourself and your brand, how to build vendor relationships that maintain impeccable quality at scale, and how to price properly so you can say yes to every client request without resentment or burnout. Jim gets candid about the hard lessons he's learned along the way and shares why managing your own expectations is the key to running a profitable, sustainable business. If you've been wondering how to elevate your business, attract higher-caliber clients, or work successfully with production workrooms while maintaining custom-level quality, this conversation will give you a clear roadmap. More About Jim Davis-Johnson: Jim Davis-Johnson is the Principal Designer and Aesthetic Artist behind Jim Davis Designs, a luxury window-treatment and soft-goods atelier headquartered in Midtown Atlanta. Since founding the company in 2015, Jim has grown his firm from a one-man operation into a multimillion-dollar brand known for its bespoke craftsmanship, meticulous detail, and elevated client experience. His portfolio spans high-end residential, boutique hospitality, and commercial projects across the U.S., the Caribbean, and beyond, including ongoing work in Antigua and luxury communities throughout the Southeast. Jim brings a rare blend of artistic intuition, technical expertise, and personal depth to his work. Raised in South Georgia in a family dynamic that shaped both his resilience and his drive, Jim built his company from the ground up with no shortcuts, relying on determination, curiosity, and a vision for beauty that felt both healing and purposeful. His upbringing gave him an extraordinary sensitivity to how spaces make people feel, something that now guides every design decision he makes. Jim's spiritual growth, including transformative experiences with meditation and therapy, has influenced his belief that design is far more than aesthetics. For him, window treatments are an expression of intention: they soften emotions, shift energy, and elevate the way people engage with their homes. He approaches each project as an opportunity to bring clarity, harmony, and beauty into a client's life, grounding his creative process in mindfulness and the power of meaningful service. Now, since April 2025, based in a street-front Midtown Atlanta showroom with over 22,000 cars passing by daily, Jim leads a team alongside his husband and lead installer, Rickey Davis-Johnson. Together, they provide full-service fabrication, project management, and installation, with a reputation for delivering flawless results and building lasting relationships with designers, architects, builders, and homeowners. Jim's work is increasingly in demand, from Florida's coveted 30A corridor to mountain homes in North Georgia, Kentucky horse country, international island estates, and major metropolitan projects. His recent launch of a national quick-ship drapery program and growing e-commerce platform has positioned Jim Davis Designs as a leader not only in custom luxury fabrication, but also in accessible, ready-to-ship window fashions for design-forward clients nationwide. With a philosophy rooted in intention, authenticity, and the belief that design can be both luxurious and deeply meaningful, Jim continues to expand his influence as a designer, entrepreneur, and storyteller. His journey, from overcoming adversity to building a brand grounded in service, craftsmanship, and soul, reflects the heart of his work and the spirit he brings to every project. In this week's Northwest Florida Fishing Report, host Joe Baya takes a different approach with a compilation-style episode built from recent reports across the Emerald Coast. With weather making fresh reports tougher to gather, Joe revisits timely conversations covering the onshore, inshore, and offshore bite from Pensacola to Panama City. The episode covers summer pompano, bull reds in the surf, June grass, sargassum, stained bay water, trout and redfish tactics, topwater and wake bait fishing, early red snapper season strategy, snapper pressure concerns, scamp and mangrove snapper options, a 790-pound bluefin tuna, mahi around grass, swordfish action, and offshore grass problems. This episode features Justin Reed with Justin Reed Fishing, Blake Hunter with Reel 30A, Capt. Evan Wheeler with Pensacola Fishing Charters, Brandon Barton with Emerald Waters Kayak Charters, Capt. Harris Scruggs with Triple B Charters, Capt. Adam Peeples with One Shot Charters, and Capt. Tyler Massey with Hot Spots Charters. Justin Reed and Blake Hunter break down the Northwest Florida surf report, where pompano are still being caught even as June grass, sargassum, rain, and shifting winds make beach fishing more challenging. Justin explains why anglers need to stay mobile, how north winds can help push grass off the beach, and why clean-water pockets may be the difference between catching fish and fighting grass all day. Blake adds a 30A perspective, explaining how dune lake outflows, stained water, sargassum, and an unusual early-summer pattern have affected the pompano bite. He also discusses why summertime pompano often feed better leading up to the full moon, why sand fleas remain important, and how Fishbites can still produce when anglers find clean, fishable water. Capt. Evan Wheeler and Brandon Barton cover the inshore bite, where heavy rain and dirty "root beer" water have made trout and redfish fishing more condition-dependent. Evan explains how rough, stained water and a lack of obvious signs of life force anglers to go back to the basics, including reading birds, bait, wading birds, pelicans, terns, and current lines. He breaks down how different bird behavior can point to pogies, glass minnows, smaller fry, or redfish feeding opportunities, and why lure size and presentation should change based on the bait being targeted. Evan also talks about prospecting with baits like a MirrOlure 17MR and Slick Junior when the visual cues are missing. Brandon Barton adds a kayak fishing perspective from the Pensacola area, where open grass flats, potholes, points, and structure are producing trout and redfish, with topwaters and wake baits both playing a role depending on wind, cloud cover, fish activity, and how committed the strikes are. Capt. Harris Scruggs gives the offshore bottom fishing report, with red snapper season shaping much of the conversation. Harris explains how he approaches the early part of snapper season by fishing known public wrecks before pressure builds, using more traditional tackle early and scaling down later as the fish become more pressured. He also gives a blunt assessment of the long red snapper season, explaining why he believes the amount of pressure could be hard on the fishery. Harris encourages anglers to think beyond simply catching a limit of red snapper, and Joe ties that into a broader discussion about targeting other species such as scamp, red grouper, and mangrove snapper while still expecting to encounter red snapper along the way. Capt. Adam Peeples and Tyler Massey close out the offshore and bluewater side of the report. Adam shares the story of a 113-inch, 790-pound bluefin tuna caught while live-baiting with a blackfin tuna, including the heavy tackle setup, the long fight, the fish dying in 2,200 feet of water, and the hard work required to retrieve it from the bottom. He also explains why crews need to be prepared with block and tackle, a real fish bag or blanket, and plenty of ice if they may encounter a fish of that size. Adam also reports good swordfish action, quality dolphin, blue water, current, and bait, while warning that scattered offshore grass has made trolling difficult. Tyler Massey adds practical mahi advice for fishing larger grass patches, explaining how to pitch baits around the edges, keep multiple rods going, and hold fish around the boat with enough bait in the water. In this week's Northwest Florida Fishing Report, host Joe Baya covers a mixed early-summer pattern from Pensacola to Panama City, with heavy rain, stained bay water, sargassum, June grass, strong surf shark action, a rare nighttime tarpon catch, steady summer pompano, stained-water trout tactics, offshore mahi around grass, swordfish timing, and boat-running issues caused by floating grass. This episode features Blake Hunter with Reel 30A, Brandon Barton with Emerald Waters Kayak Charters, and Capt. Adam Peeples with One Shot Charters. Blake Hunter breaks down the 30A surf report, where nighttime fishing has produced strong shark action and a standout tarpon catch from the beach after dark. He explains how blacktips, sandbar sharks, bull sharks, and bigger fish are feeding around the evening-to-night transition, why stingray has been a top shark bait, and how heavier tackle, shock leaders, and second-sandbar setups come into play. Blake also covers the current surf conditions, including dune lake outflows, sargassum, June grass, and a surprisingly good summer pompano bite, with sand fleas and Fishbites both producing fish when anglers can find clean, fishable water. Brandon Barton gives the Pensacola inshore kayak report, where heavy rain has left the bays dirty and stained, making trout and redfish fishing more condition-dependent. He explains why anglers should switch from natural presentations to louder, higher-contrast lures in stained water, including topwaters, wake baits, brighter soft plastics, and possibly popping corks. Brandon also talks about finding trout around mullet schools near docks, why a white bone Southern Salt Apex topwater matched the bait well, and how he rigs for long casts with 20-pound braid, 20-pound fluorocarbon leader, and longer leaders tied with an FG knot. Capt. Adam Peeples gives the Destin offshore report, where fishing has been productive when boats can work around rough weather and heavy sargassum. He explains how scattered grass has made trolling difficult, but mahi can still be caught by finding larger patches, birds, or floating structure and using cut bait, squid, Ballyhoo, live bait, or even small jigs to draw fish to the boat. Adam also covers the current swordfish pattern, with fish keying heavily on major feeding periods, especially around the full and new moon, and warns boaters to watch for grass clogging motors, raw-water intakes, strainers, and debris hidden inside the floating sargassum. Text Kristen your thoughts or feedback about the showWhat looks like a “perfect” business on the outside is rarely accidental. In this episode, I'm joined by Brooke Kromer, a luxury real estate agent based in 30A, Florida, who works with athletes, high-net-worth buyers, and investors to help them find not just a property—but a lifestyle.Brooke shares her unconventional path from growing up in the NFL world to sports reporting, and how a pivot during COVID led her to build a thriving real estate business in one of the most sought-after beach markets in the country. We talk about: How she turned lifelong exposure into a strategic advantage What high-end clients actually need (beyond just a home) The difference between selling real estate and guiding investments How she's built a team with complementary strengths instead of duplication What it really looks like to create a high-touch, personalized client experience If you've ever felt like other people “just found their thing,” this episode is a reminder that most successful businesses are built by connecting the dots over time.
Todd Anthony Tyler tends to advocate classic menswear with personality rather than chasing every short-lived trend. Based on his recent style discussions and the broader Spring/Summer 2026 menswear direction, these are the trends most aligned with what he'd likely recommend:1. Relaxed TailoringForget skinny-fit everything.Look for:Softer shouldersPleated trousersSlightly fuller cutsUnstructured jacketsThis is heavily influenced by Italian tailoring and the return of elegance in menswear.3. Luxury real estate agent Rachel Warrell joins the show to share how she built one of the most recognizable personal brands in the Florida real estate market through consistency, storytelling, and strategic prospecting. Specializing in Panama City Beach, 30A, and Destin luxury properties, Rachel reveals how social media became the credibility engine that helped scale her business and position her as the go-to expert in her market. In this episode, Rachel breaks down how prospecting built her business long before social media amplified it. From waking up at 4:00 AM to create daily content before starting her workday, to eventually leveraging REDX Brand Builder to streamline her marketing, she shares the real behind-the-scenes work required to build a trusted personal brand. Rachel also explains why agents must stop treating social media as optional and instead use it to tell stories, showcase expertise, and create trust before ever speaking to a client. Whether it's luxury listings, local market education, or lifestyle-focused content, Rachel's strategy proves that consistency and authenticity are what truly separate top producers from the competition. Here's what you will discover in this episode…•Why prospecting, not social media, was the true foundation of Rachel's business•How social media acts as a “living resume” and credibility engine•Why storytelling sells more effectively than listing features alone•The importance of consistency in building trust and market authority•How Rachel built a recognizable luxury brand in Northwest Florida•Why agents should stop treating social media as optional•How leveraging systems and delegation helped Rachel scale sustainably•The role authenticity plays in attracting the right clients and opportunitiesJUMP TO THESE TOPICS00:00 –

What happens when two sisters team up to build a powerhouse short-term rental brand in two of the most competitive markets in the country? Most people think working with family is a recipe for disaster; Jen and Lauren prove it's actually a competitive advantage. In this episode, I sit down with Jen Stone and Lauren Schmidt, better known as The Airbnb Sisters. We're unpacking how they've grown a thriving portfolio across Nashville and 30A while keeping their standards sky-high and their sisterly bond intact. We talk about:How a single CMA Fest booking turned into a professional management career for Nashville's biggest developersThe strategy behind their iconic pink-themed homes and how they attract high-value group stays like weddings and bachelorette partiesHow Jen transitioned from personal assistant to the engine of the business, managing guest flow and flawless check-insThe story of finding (and fiercely protecting) a standout cleaning crew to maintain five-star standards from hundreds of miles awayA candid look at hosting large groups, and how their branding and screening process attract guests who actually respect the propertyBut this isn't just a story about pretty houses. It's about the evolution of a brand. Jen and Lauren pull back the curtain on the delicate conversations they have with owners about decor budgets and why they now insist on being involved before a home is even furnished. You'll hear how they still run a high-volume business with a personal touch, and my honest take on where they can finally let technology take some of the weight off their shoulders. If you've ever wondered how to turn a "side hustle" into a recognizable brand or how to successfully partner with family, this conversation is your front-row seat. Get ready to learn what it really takes to dominate the high-energy group stay market.HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY POINTS:[01:15] A short introduction about our guests Jen Stone and Lauren Schmidt, and share how they started and grew their short-term rental business together as sisters[05:42] Jen explains how she and Lauren divided roles while building their short-term rental business[07:16] Lauren shares why she brought her sister Jen into the short-term rental business[08:29] Jen explains how social media helped grow their short-term rental business and attract large group bookings[10:54] Lauren outlines their mixed short-term rental business model of ownership and management, and how a long-term developer partnership shaped their portfolio[13:41] Lauren highlights that running properties far from home, like their 30A beach rentals, is very different from managing Nashville homes[14:35] Jen and Lauren discuss managing long-distance properties and finding the right cleaning team [18:19] Lauren and Jen explain how they maintain quality and consistent design across their properties[20:12] Lauren describes managing guest communications themselves and my advice to them about dynamic pricing tool and property management software[26:57] Jen explains that their approach to adding properties is highly selective, focusing first on the relationship and communication style with the owner rather than just the property itself[29:19] How Jen and Lauren use experience and firm standards to guide budgeting and property fit decisions [33:12] Jen and Lauren debunks bachelorette myths and highlights the reality of high-quality group guests [36:00] Lauren and Jen share how they generally don't actively screen bachelorette parties or other group bookings and they treat all guests equally and welcome those who want to book[37:47] The lightning round Golden Nuggets:“It's so important that we've got backups and backups for our backups.”“You can have a beautifully designed property, but if it's poorly run, you're not going to get great reviews.”“If somebody is giving you trouble, kill them with kindness.”Let's Connect:Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/the.airbnb.sisters/ Enjoyed the show? Welcome to Episode #192 of the Way of the Bible podcast. This is our eighth episode in our Twenty-Fourth mini-series entitled The Return of Jesus Christ [3]. On today's post Thanksgiving Week 2025 episode, we will be taking A Walk on the Beach with DrZ and summarize the content of this mini-series and areas we can focus on for future investigation into this topic the great snatching away, the Harpazo, the Rapture of the church. Let's just jump right into the middle of the mix at a beach house along 30A. So glad to have such a big group with us this morning. I realize this is an important topic, especially given the signs of the times. But I also recognize a special draw to just walk on the beach this gorgeous Thanksgiving week morning here along 30A. It's one of those mornings, after the water was totally flat yesterday, to have a light surf of clear emerald waves with white foam caps that take your breath away. The calming sounds of rushing waters will beckon us to enter into the conversation.I'll meet you all behind the beach house in ten minutes. That should give me enough time to go around and greet everyone personally. We'll have plenty of time for follow-up conversations and perhaps a surprise or two after our walk this morning.Looks like everyone is here. As we make our way out to the beach on the boardwalk, we'll pause at the large landing across the top of the dune and take in the view before descending to God's stadium floor. The floor where two worlds collide and intersect, but where no creatures are shared. With that, let's get walking.Alright, everyone, stop and take a look up and down the beach. What a glorious sight God has provided for us today. You can plainly see in the morning light the shimmering waters of deep blue, blue, and emerald-green with splotches of light tan where the sandbars lie just below the surface. Along the water line and inland, wide and deep snow white sugar sand as far as the eyes can see in both directions. Alright, let's head down to the stadium floor… Check out these crystal clear waters up close. The white foaming surf and cool, but not cold, feel of the clear water that quickly turns emerald ten feet off shore. We'll head toward the mid-morning sunrise and turn back to the West in a little over a mile. What is interesting but rarely considered is that there is another entire ecosystem with creatures that match and or surpass even the greatest or most unusual land creatures on earth. Water covers approximately 71% of our planet, with 91.5% of that water in the oceans. Yet we know little about the vast ocean spaces and the creatures that live there, and their habitats. We share the same oxygen but in totally different environments. There is a tiny crustacean called the hadal amphipod that lives in the deepest parts of the Mariana Trench up to 34,500 feet or 6.5 miles deep. The pressure at that depth is 15,350 pounds per square inch, which is 1000 times greater than the pressure at sea level. And yet there they...

Today I am joined by Mallory Killingstad! Mallory grew up in Dallas, Texas, and every summer her family would rent a house in Seaside for a month—a place she has always considered her happy place. In fact, the artist for Pavilion was her best friend in middle school, who often joined her family on those summer trips—neither of them realizing they'd one day collaborate on a company inspired by 30A in their thirties. She attended SMU for undergrad, and living in Dallas helped shape her appreciation for fashion, which later translated into interiors and home. With an undergraduate degree in engineering, Mallory's career path has been anything but linear. She owned a clothing boutique for several years, lived in Aspen while working in community marketing for Outdoor Voices during its startup days, and eventually returned to Dallas. After losing her father at 31, Mallory made the bold decision to pursue her MBA at 32, an intimidating step at the time, and she proudly graduated at 34. In the years that followed, she got married, broke her leg, started a family, and is now a mom to two little girls. Through it all, Mallory has held tightly to hope, choosing to believe she would always land on her feet—a perspective she admits she didn't fully embrace in her twenties. In this episode Mallory and I talked about her twenties, the first business she started, why she decided to leave that business behind, going back to school, how she started Pavilion, why having a cofounder is so important, and more! Totex co-founder Berlin Raj joins Eric and “Overkill Bill” to unpack a single-box, hydronic monoblock system that combines space conditioning, domestic hot water, pool heating, thermal + lithium storage, EV charging integration, and backup power. Born from Berlin's lifelong tinkering (and many shocks), the idea: stop wasting condenser heat—capture it for hot water while cooling. The system keeps all refrigerant sealed in the outdoor unit and runs PEX supply/return to indoor air handlers (ducted or ductless), avoiding field flares and refrigerant line runs. Install looks familiar—set the pad, pipe PEX, fill a glycol loop, wire power/control—yet it adds clever tricks: load matching from ~1.5–6 tons, dynamic load limiting for small panels (even ~20–30A circuits), modular thermal storage (~100 kWh cooling / ~55 kWh heating), a ~10.5 kWh lithium pack, and app/10" touchscreen controls over Modbus with hooks for BMS and home automation. In cooling-plus-hot-water mode, field tests show very high effective COP (Berlin cites “9+”) because the unit harvests both sides of the cycle. Engineered for residential and light commercial (think houses, small offices, QSRs), the unit can supply hot water up to ~165°F, support radiant/underfloor at lower temps, operate down to about -7.6°F, and be manifolded for capacity and redundancy. Texas is the target U.S. beachhead (long cooling seasons = months of “free” hot water), with pilots in Australia and U.S. pilots planned; broader availability is aimed for mid to late next year. Berlin's closing note? “People, people, people”—comfort and outcomes start with humans. Notable Quotes: “Why dump condenser heat when you can use it? Cool the house and make hot water at the same time.” — Berlin Raj “Dynamic load balancing means a heat pump that plays nice with a 100-amp panel.” — Eric Kaiser (paraphrased) “People, people, people. Comfort is ultimately about humans first.” — Berlin Raj Berlin on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/berlinrajm/ Totex website: https://www.totexenergy.com/ Come visit with Berin in person at the www.USHeatPumpSummit.com This episode was recorded in September 2025.

I Am Third - Matthew 19:16-30The “I am third” attitude that Coach Bill Easton impressed on Gayle Sayers and that John Ferrier also lived life by is exactly the attitude that Jesus wanted to impress on the ‘man like us' we meet in today's passage. Many of those who have ‘accepted Jesus' don't expect God to have much input in their lives. On some Sundays they will give Jesus a little of their ‘spare' time and resources. They are first in their own lives; Jesus is just in the background for a little emotional support and hell insurance.Matthew 19:16-30A man trusting his own goodness asks Jesus how to go to Heaven - V. 16-17aJesus knew the first thing a good person has to be confronted with is that they are not good people in Heaven's eyes, they are sinners in need of the Savior (Matthew 7:11; Romans 3:23-24; Romans 6:23).If we could hear Jesus' tone in verse 17, we'd understand that Jesus was communicating 2 things – the man wasn't as good as he thought he was, and the God who is by definition good was standing before Him!Jesus exposes the man's “I am first” attitude - V. 17b-26The commands Jesus includes are all the horizontal commands on human relationships, called the second table of the Ten Commands (decalogue), with the summary statement to “love your neighbor as yourself.”The commands Jesus leaves out are the vertical commands on relationship with God, called the first table of the Ten Commands, with the summary statement to “Love God with all your heart.”God is supposed to be first, others second, and ourselves third. Jesus showed the man from the second table of the Ten Commands that this man didn't put others before himself, let alone God first. Jesus' statement in verse 21 merely exposes that the man is unwilling to put God first.Do you grasp how what Jesus says to this man in verse 21 is what He says to every person here? Will you now by faith change your mindset from “I am first” to “I am third,” with Jesus truly being the Lord of all in your life. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world but forfeits his soul? - Matthew 16:26Verse 25 lets us know the disciples were astonished at Jesus' words that outward prosperity doesn't necessarily mean someone is right with God.When the great reversal comes, putting Jesus first will have been worth it! - V. 27-30Here as elsewhere (Matt. 6:20) Jesus promises that those who live with “I am third” faith will be richly rewarded in the ages to come (1 Cor. 3:11-15).The word for “new world” in verse 28 is palingenesia (new genesis!). It could be a reference to either the coming 1,000 year reign of Christ (Rev. 20) or the new earth (Rev. 21-22) or BOTH. Jesus' point is that any sacrifices we make now as “we are third” will be more than compensated on the other side of this present age.Repent, therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom Heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets long ago. - Acts 3:19-21
Design in the South is personal. It's layered with heritage, shaped by hospitality, and built on relationships. Today, we travel to Starkville, Mississippi to explore the work and world of a designer who exemplifies what it means to design with heart. The conversation begins with an emerging trend—dorm and sorority house design—not typically covered in design media, but a significant driver of business in Southern college towns. Sorority living, especially, has evolved into a lifestyle market, complete with high expectations, big budgets, and even bigger wear and tear. Designing for these spaces demands durability, performance, and style in equal measure. As the designer jokes, “Everything has to be spray-tan approved.” Working on a sorority house for her own former chapter, she leans into color, symbolism, and storytelling. “I know the meaning behind things,” she says, weaving chapter colors, lighting, and fabric choices together to reflect both legacy and future needs. With girls living in two-year cycles, hundreds of members dining daily, and Zoom calls replacing quiet study sessions, the design must be not only beautiful but smart, emotionally supportive, and future-forward. Storytelling is central to her work. “If I didn't capture their real life, I'm not sure I would really be able to capture anything,” she says. Unlike many designers who stage photos with clinical precision, she leaves the coffee maker and the magnets on the fridge. There's something refreshing—and intentional—about showing homes as they're used. It's real, approachable, and still inspiring. That philosophy carries into her project portfolio, which is both colorful and cohesive. Take the Wetherbee Street kitchen: clean acrylic stools meet traditional cabinetry, a built-in bar peeks into frame, and the countertop hosts everyday appliances—because that's how the client lives. “If the client can't see themselves in the finished space, I haven't done my job,” she explains. Color is a consistent through-line in her work. While she began with a neutral palette, over time she's become known for weaving multiple shades of the same hue across a room. Her nursery projects—some launched by acrylic cribs and butterfly wall art—bring this approach to life with playful purpose and emotional weight. We also talk about historic preservation and transformation. Projects like Kirkwood Place and Greentree demonstrate her ability to revive storied homes with timeless flair. “We gutted it to the studs and brought it back to life,” she says of one home that once graced the cover of Southern Living. Another was the result of a seven-year client relationship that evolved into a deep friendship. As the conversation winds down, she shares the dream project she's still manifesting—a start-to-finish beach house in the 30A corridor. “I've done a condo, but I'd love to do a full house in Rosemary or Alys Beach,” she says with hopeful confidence. And why not? Her story is one of evolution, rootedness, and authenticity. Marie Clair Cumbaa of Cumbaa Design Company, designs with empathy, leads with color, and listens deeply. It's not just about beautiful rooms. It's about making people feel seen, supported, and at home.
