We had the pleasure of interviewing Can't Swim Zoom video!One of New Jersey's prodigal sons once mused “who says you can't go home?” – but CAN'T SWIM have never really left their Garden State surroundings.Sure, they've certainly logged tens of thousands of miles over the past seven years, bringing their cathartic blend of rock, punk, and emo to audiences around the world on bills with A Day To Remember and Senses Fail and at festivals like 2000trees. But at their core, Can't Swim are innately Jersey through and through: from the ghosts of Tri-State hardcore giants that oscillate through their high-octane sound to the very garages and studios where those songs take shape.Now, the band plant their Garden State flag even deeper on their fourth LP, Thanks But No Thanks, an album that quite literally finds them going back to their roots.After wrapping another slate of hard touring for 2021's Change Of Plans, the group – vocalist Chris LoPorto, bassist Greg McDevitt, guitarist Danny Rico and drummer (and honorary Jersian) Blake Gamel – decamped to the Shore, insulating themselves in the comforts of home while working to hone in on the most elemental components of the Can't Swim sound.Joy has rarely been a word associated with Can't Swim – awash in tempestuous lyricism and muscular energy since breaking into the underground with 2016's Death Deserves A Name EP – but there's a self-referential wryness to LoPorto's lyrics on Thanks But No Thanks that winks its way through the album's 10 songs, along with a finely tuned melodic edge that balances out the band's more brooding nature. With guitarist Rico overseeing production, mixing, and mastering (a position he held on 2017's debut LP Fail You Again and 2018's This Too Won't Pass), first single “me vs. me vs. all y'all” is Can't Swim's most fully realized pop song to date, name-checking The Cure, The Lemonheads and Eddie Vedder, while the album-opening “Nowhere, Ohio” offers a playful tribute to the Alkaline Trio classic “Radio” in between stabs of downtuned guitars.But don't conflate fun with frivolity. The same emotional heft that's made Can't Swim a cult favorite in the scene – and earned them musical co-signs from the likes of Taking Back Sunday's Adam Lazzara and Beartooth's Caleb Shomo – is front and center on Thanks But No Thanks, from the sorrowful summer 2022 single “I heard they found you face down inside your living room,” mourning the death a close friend, to the classic punk rallying cry “ELIMINATE,” which tackles the gun violence epidemic with a strength-in-numbers call to arms.In this way, the evolution of Can't Swim as a band is really evident: What once were presented as insurmountable obstacles on previous albums are now framed as hard-but-necessary lessons that need confronting in to move forward and grow, calling upon new levels of resolve and strength to dull down life's demons. Through it all, the band have been able to truly block out the noise and let their conscience resonate loudest of all.Four records in, it feels like Can't Swim are just now hitting their stride. We had the pleasure of interviewing Can't Swim over Zoom video!CAN'T SWIM have released their new album Change of Plans, on Pure Noise Records. The New Jersey band had recently dropped the video for the first single "Deliver Us More Evil." Watch it here. "'Deliver Us More Evil' was one of those songs that I knew right off the bat would be a single someday for Can't Swim," says vocalist Chris LoPorto. "I think I came home from tour and sat down in my studio and wrote the entire thing in an afternoon. One of my favorite songwriters said in an interview that a good song should only take a half-hour to write. When I listen to 'Deliver Us More Evil,' it really sounds like the future of the band to me, a road I have been wanting to go down for a long time."As for the visual, he says, "The video was shot in Brooklyn, New York by Benjamin Lieber. It was the first time we were all in the same room since COVID. Almost two years without touring and seeing each other made the day feel more special. Performing with the two dancers and being directed by Ben made me miss touring and doing this band full-time. The imagery displayed in the video tie into a lot of the themes on the album."Ultimately, Can't Swim feel that Change of Plans is "the most Can't Swim record yet." LoPorto says, "All of our endeavors as a band have led us to make what I think is the most honest and transparent album in our discography. We spent way less time recording what we thought we should be writing and put down whatever came naturally. The recording process was certainly the easiest to date as well — we knew what we wanted going into it. I'm constantly writing songs and some of the tracks on Change of Plans have been in the demo stage for almost four years now so it feels great to finally have them all together on one release." Change of Plans was produced, mixed, and mastered by Will Putney (A Day to Remember, Every Time I Die, Body Count, Knocked Loose) of Graphic Nature Audio and is the culmination of everything Can't Swim have been building and exploring over the last six years, combining their signature visceral lyricism and cathartic rock sound with influences ranging from the worlds of folk to EDM. One could say it's a little bit of everything all rolled into one, and in a way, that's true. When life is more unpredictable than ever, Can't Swim are striking the perfect balance of hope and realism by writing songs that embrace the chaos of life. They want to find and harness a vibe that makes living a bit easier for everyone, and with each release, they're getting closer to that goal.The band will also head back out on the road this November with Silverstein and The Plot in You. Picture the scene – you're standing the middle of an old church. In front of you, built into the wall at the back of the room, are the remnants of ancient organ, its pipes dwarfing everything in the room as they rise almost to the ceiling. At either side of it are stained glass windows, depictions of divinity that loom over the rest of the room, echoes of an old religion. Now, it's home to a distinctly different cult.The pews and the altar – indeed, all the trappings of the old church – are gone save from those two features that remain. The altar has become a stage, and the pews are gone entirely. Upstairs, in the balcony, the pews remain but they're not like they were before. They're much more comfortable and I'm sure the owners wouldn't mind too much if you stood on them.Church conversions are odd things. In this instance, Saint Luke's is now a pub, restaurant and venue. Its purpose may have changed but its religiosity is the same – we come to pay reverence and tribute.Behind the organ and stained glass windows is the backstage area, a much more modern setting where the walls are clad in the generic off-colour white we now see in offices and new build housing. Can't Swim's erstwhile drummer/current guitarist and tour manager looks for a quiet area where I can interview Chris, the band's singer. Chris is the reason this band exists, he's the reason it changed from a guy recording demos into his bedroom into the five piece that they are today.Eventually we stumble upon what is probably the quietest place in the building – the shower room. That's right folks; this interview was conducted in a shower. I sat on a laundry basket while Chris sat on a huge pile of towels. Two guys clad in black hunched over a microphone, telling stories and shooting the shit in the only way I know how.We had a pretty fun, if brief, conversation.
