Metal YouTuber and fellow Oregonian Taylor Danley shows up with riffs, opinions, and a tube-amp habit that could brown out a neighborhood. We trace the path from Elvis ukulele kid to extreme-metal lifer, then get into the real fight: cranked amps vs. modeling. We make the case for the Boss Tube Amp Expander (turn it up, keep your lease), why an Axe-Fx is the smartest carry-on, and how millimeters of mic placement beat a mile of copy-paste presets. We talk producers who actually make bands sound like bands (Adam D., Will Putney), the charm of leaving one or two “human” wobbles in the take, and why the Boss Katana is still the new-player cheat code. Gear heads get the goodies: Orange OR80, old Marshalls, NS-2 doing unglamorous hero work, the Metal Zone used tastefully (yes, it can be done), and the story behind Taylor's Obsidian Audio boost plus a new preamp on the way. There's record-store nostalgia, kids discovering Sabbath, a Corolla-vs-'69 Camaro tone analogy, and a very Portland pizza detour to land the plane. Good laughs, useful takeaways, zero gatekeeping. Jesse Starcher, Robert Cooper, Mik Wanamaker and Mark Radulich present their Body Count Merciless 2024 Album Review as part of the MHOD Jukebox!Body Count is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1990. The group is fronted by Ice-T, who first established himself as a rapper but co-founded the group with lead guitarist Ernie C out of their interest in heavy metal music. Ice-T took on the role of vocalist and writing the lyrics for most of Body Count's songs, while Ernie C has been responsible for writing the group's music.Body Count's self-titled debut album was released on Sire Records in 1992, and garnered much attention due to a controversy around the song "Cop Killer". Their label, Sire Records, and their parent company, Warner Bros. Records, defended the song; however Ice-T chose to remove it from the album because he felt that the controversy had eclipsed the music itself. The group left Sire the following year, and they have since released seven more albums.Three out of the band's original seven members are deceased: D-Roc died from lymphoma, Beatmaster V from leukemia, and Mooseman in a drive-by shooting. Body Count's current lineup includes vocalist Ice-T, guitarists Ernie C and Juan Garcia, bassist Vincent Price, drummer Will "Ill Will" Dorsey Jr., and backing vocalists Sean E Sean and Little Ice (Ice-T's son). The band received its second Grammy nomination and later won the award at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021 for Best Metal Performance with their song "Bum Rush" from the album Carnivore.Merciless is the eighth studio album by American heavy metal band Body Count. It was released on November 22, 2024, via Century Media Records. Production was handled by Ice-T, Vincent Price and Will Putney. It features guest appearances from Corpsegrinder, Howard Jones, Joe Bad, and Max Cavalera.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

In this episode, Alan Day and Dan O'Connor of Four Year Strong sit in to discuss the writing and recording of the single "uncooked" from their 2024 album Analysis Paralysis. Inspired by a bout of writer's block, the song explores their curiosity about whether certain substances might help them overcome it, despite both being straight edge since they were kids. They share how this challenge shaped the raw energy of "uncooked" and explain how producer Will Putney played a key role in bringing the song to life. The conversation also touches on their vocal harmonies, personal growth, and the creative pressures of their long-standing music career. Throughout their career, New Jersey heavy outfit Fit For An Autopsy have remained stoic to their music and beliefs, following their own trends and passions rather than bow to the will of the masses. As such, the band have developed a staunch and loyal fanbase, which, despite Fit For An Autopsy finding themselves thrust into the ears of a more mainstream market in recent years, have remained as passionate as ever. The band's 2022 album What The Future Holds saw Fit For An Autopsy somehow make small cracks in the chasm dividing metal and the general public, achieving the band's highest-charting position to date, becoming the first of their six full-length albums to reach the Top 25 of the Billboard 200.Not that this had any effect or influence on Fit For An Autopsy when it came time to record the follow-up, with guitarist Will Putney joining HEAVY to explain where the new album plans to take us."It's a reflection on how I feel about the world," he began. "This record's no different in a sense to any of the previous ones in the place that it comes from. It probably gets a little more frustrated from album to album, but on the past few records I feel that Fit has sort of found itself, and we're comfortable in our own skin now. We know what we wanna do. We can play to our strengths. We're just refining the thing that we think is ours."In the full interview, Will talks more about the musicality on The Nothing That Is, the singles released and how they reflect the rest of the album, listening to an album in its entirety rather than in bits and pieces, the success of What The Future Holds and the temptation to rehash the winning formula, producing the album himself and the advantages and disadvantages of keeping it in house, three songs to listen to in order to get to know Fit For An Autopsy and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Greyhaven is an emerging band with a passionate fanbase, but they are yet to achieve widespread recognition. Their journey has been marked by lineup changes, pandemics, and recent breakthroughs, including working with Solid State Records and gaining attention from tours. Brent Mills recently sat down with Joshua Toomey for an Audio Autopsy of "Empty Black" The recording of Empty Black was an intense, collaborative process with producer Will Putney, reflecting both personal and political themes in the songwriting. Songs like "Sweet Machine" and "White Lighters" explore anxiety and personal struggles, while tracks like "Kappa (River Child)" show a more imaginative, creative side. You all know that we here at have a heart for more than one genre, so we have had Post-Metal and Drone Metal in this marathon and what else could be next than an interview with Hardcore-Metalcore workaholic Will Putney? The guy has been an awesome person to talk to as he was very open and had a lot to say about END, their new record The Sin of Human Frailty, (upcoming) tours, Better Lovers, the Tri-State-Area scene and much much more! Don't be surprised if you come across a guy who's well-versed in his music knowledge (across many genres) and who is also very clear about what he can do and what not. So enjoy the interview and make sure to check back tomorrow to find the next interview!
Interview by Simon Russell-WhiteAs the saying goes 'get busy living or get busy dying!' This is certainly true for Greg Puciato, (the living part that is) multi instrumentalist and vocalist for Better Lovers, The Black Queen, Killer Be Killed, Jerry Cantrell's Solo Band, his own Solo band and, of course, vocalist for the now very deceased Dillinger Escape Plan.He is a man with an already distinguished career, and yet again he has turned up the heat on the majority of his above mentioned projects and is hitting our shores with his Solo outfit in Summer 2024. It feels like five minutes ago that he graced us with the first-ever Australian tours for The Black Queen, but believe it or not that was almost five years ago! Where does the time go?!Celebrating his second solo album Mirrorcell the follow-up to his debut 2020 record Child Soldier: Creator of God, this is the first time us Australian's will see Greg live as a Solo artist, with his band of course!Given the limited time with Greg I kind of wish I had a buzzer so we could talk about each project for the exact amount of time, the man is literally that busy! Recently having joined long-time friends Will Putney (producer and guitarist in Fit For An Autopsy) and three remaining members of now very deceased Every Time I Die (Jordan Buckley - guitar, Clayton "Goose" Holyoak – drums and Steve Micciche – bass) to form a new band Better Lovers. In short, this is a band that celebrates friendship, kinship and the pure love of music!Having just dropped their new single Two Alive Amongst the Dead, "this was actually the first single as a complete band, we wrote and recorded between shows on our first tour" explained Greg. Hopefully, we get to see Better Lovers in Australia sometime soon.Moving right along, recently Greg was given the honour to join Alice In Chains legend Jerry Cantrell (guitar and vocals) for a run of live solo shows, during this interview we capture Greg explaining a moment where a once long-time idol has now not only become a band member but a dear friend of Greg's, he talks about those little moments where he simply cannot believe the position is in and how a moment with Jerry on stage took him back emotionally.Greg also owns a record company Federal Prisoner which will be releasing the next The Black Queen record as writing has actually begun. The man simply doesn't stop, Greg expresses feeling partly overwhelmed with the amount of projects he has on but as he explains so well, is aware that time is against us all, so the time is now.Greg hasn't sat for many interviews for a little while, I wonder why?He went on to laugh about the chance of the Killer Be Killed boys suddenly giving him a call, to cut another record and/ or tour.He went on to explain how much Max Cavalera (ex Sepultura, Soulfly, Nailbomb and Killer Be Killed) loves to tour and is a huge influence on him.Who knows we may see another Killer Be Killed record in the future, this is something that seems very damn likely too.Greg Puciato has the incredible ability to separate styles and musical abilities between various projects, so make sure you grab a ticket for his first-ever Australian run of solo (with previously mentioned band) shows in January 2024, it promises to be a fun time.Tickets from destroyalllines.com

First, she has to survive middle school… Putney Hicks just wants things to go right for once. A socially awkward girl dropped among rich kids in an experimental STEM institution, the anxious twelve-year-old can't seem to see her own potential. But life sprinkles in a surprise when she receives a mysterious tablet housing an advanced, talkative intelligence. Wondering if the friendly pixie in the device is alien or supernatural, Putney is determined to keep it safe while exploring its possibilities. But when competitive art and science projects lead to an ill-advised bet with a wealthy mean girl, the would-be engineer may be in way over her head. Will Putney's mysterious new mentor help her make it through her first week in class? The Secret of the Magic eyePad is the award-winning first book in the Putney Hicks Inventor Adventures middle grade series. If you like girls in STEM, preteen drama, and clever innovations, then you'll love Marsha Tufft's lighthearted tale. Buy The Secret of the Magic eyePad to click through to fabulous fun today! What Readers' Favorite says: ★★★★★ The Secret of the Magic eyePad is a sci-fi adventure book for children by Marsha Tufft. Twelve-year-old Putney Hicks is a science and math prodigy but often finds herself struggling in social situations. Putney is about to start seventh grade in a new experimental STEM school when she receives a mysterious gift from Miss Pepper, her favorite teacher from Kodiak Elementary. The gift turns out to be an "eyePad," containing an advanced interface of a holographic pixie named Sam... Her only problem is Sue Wexford, a rich girl who never fails to embarrass Putney. However, with the upcoming Science Fair, Putney is determined to beat Sue in the design challenge. Will she succeed? ★★★★★ Geared to readers aged 10-15 years, Tufft's book is a masterpiece with a great storyline and even greater lessons. The novel will surely generate a love for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in young readers. It will teach them to think critically, enhancing their problem-solving skills. I loved the learning curve Tufft incorporated in the plot, depicting the prototyping and designing steps that led to the perfect invention. The innovative curriculum at Putney's school maintained a balance between science and art and highlighted the importance of healthy competition and teamwork. These lessons were complemented by an intriguing and fun plot featuring newly blossomed friendships, a little bit of rivalry, and a few instances of sleuthing. Tufft included just the right amount of magic to hold the plot together. The colorful illustrations were at once informative and relaxing. As a reader with a scientific background, I found The Secret of the Magic eyePad to be a unique resource suitable for including in school libraries and reading assignments. ★★★★★ Marsha Tufft does an incredible job of writing about science, curiosity, and self-discovery. There is something magical in this book and readers will enjoy that part of the story. But the part about product design is written in a fun way and packed with information and insight that will fuel the problem-solving skills of young readers and ignite their imaginations. The Secret of the Magic eyePad is written in the first-person narrative and it is a humorous voice that reflects the thoughts and feelings of a young character. It is filled with fun activities, interesting characters, and lessons on solving problems. It is as realistic as it is magical. About the author Award-winning author Marsha Tufft loves snorkeling ...

Interview by Kris PetersThy Art Is Murder are up there with Australia's greatest ever extreme metal exports. They have taken their music far and wide, appearing at prestigious festivals around the world like Summer Breeze, Download, Graspop and Wacken and playing with bands such as Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Kreator, Lamb Of God, Killswitch Engage and Parkway Drive. Their thinking-person's blackened death metal has challenged, provoked and inspired audiences around the world with little regard for expectation or conformity. In Australia the band has been nominated for two ARIA Awards and smashed existing chart records and convention. They have won the hearts and ears of a global audience and continue to deliver their strong social messages without fear of reproach or muzzling. And you get the feeling they have only just started. With their latest album Godlike set for release on September 15, HEAVY spent some time with guitarist Andy Marsh to go into more detail. We're feeling really good," he affirmed ahead of the release. "It's exciting, especially when you've worked on something for so long and you have to keep it to yourself. I'm looking forward to getting some feedback from the wider community and the fans."Godlike is Thy Art Is Murder's sixth album, so we ask Marsh if by now the band has a set process of doing things or if each album cycle differs from the last."It's pretty much the same," he said, "get together, write some riffs, put some songs together as best we can and meet up with our producer Will Putney and finish the job. It normally takes four to six weeks. Last year we spent siix months piecing the thing together."We press Marsh on what to expect musically from Godlike."I can't tell you too much, really," he measured. "We're just trying to step things up quite a bit. We had a lot of time off, a lot of time to think of new ideas, a lot of time to think about where we were thinking of taking the band in the future. So just trying to incorporate some groovier elements, bigger choruses and imagine what we could put on the CD that's gonna help elevate the band to the next level of it's career."In the full interview, Andy talks deeper about Godlike, the singles put out so far and how they represent the overall picture, releasing an album independently for the first time, the themes explored on the album, the cover artwork and where it comes from, how Thy Art Is Murder's sound has changed from their debut album in 2010 to now, future plans and more.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Incendiary over Zoom video!Armed with crushing metallic riffs, instantly both fresh and familiar, Incendiary populate each of their four full-length albums with irresistibly energized rhythms and adrenalized urgency. Change The Way You Think About Pain is their leanest and unapologetically meanest yet. The quintet weaned on the Long Island, New York, hardcore scene have more to say than ever. Sharply biting and insightful lyrics sit atop blunt metalcore in a perfect soundtrack to throw a brick through a window.Incendiary delivers a sound of its own, mixing classic passion and modern power. Frontman Brendan Garrone, guitarists Brian Audley and Rob Nobile, and drummer Dan Lomeli, cite East Coast hardcore heroes like Vision Of Disorder, 108, Indecision and Glassjaw as part of Incendiary's formative DNA. Less familiar listeners might liken them to a very heavy Rage Against The Machine. The band returned to Will Putney of Graphic Nature Audio (Knocked Loose, Every Time I Die, Vein.fm) to engineer, mix and master the new release. Many essential genre bands never made a second album, let alone a fourth. “We are kind of in rare territory being a hardcore band on their fourth LP,” Garrone concedes. “It feels like a milestone. By now, you're either ‘supposed' to drastically change your sound or have it be the exact same thing as the record before,” he adds. “We didn't want to do either of those things. Our focus was on refining the sound that we've optimally been working towards rather than any desire to make a huge pivot.” Audley says that in addition to the more focused songwriting on Change The Way You Think About Pain, “we also wanted it to be more aggressive and more abrasive, in terms of songs and production.”Thematically, Incendiary's fourth album confronts the hyper-polarization of American society, those who confuse selfishness with freedom, and the lengths we'll go to in order to avoid pain and maintain comfort. The socio-political pulse found throughout Cost of Living remains, with a deeper exploration of the introspective personal lyrics Garrone started to introduce on Thousand Mile Stare. “The album is a mix of both the socio-politically driven content and darker, more personalized subjects. The album title is meant to conjure the concept of pain avoidance,” Garrone explains. “Most of the songs have some kind of tie back to the things everyone does to avoid feeling any semblance of pain. ‘Pain avoidance' is a phrase me and Brian came across and kept in the back of our minds.”We want to hear from you! For over two decades Canadian punk/metal outfit Comeback Kid have delivered continual knockout blows across their seven albums, combining the best in attitude and delivery of punk rock and metalcore into an anarchic package of music that has seen them strike a chord with music lovers the world over.By continually pushing the boundaries of two genres that are steeped in tradition, Comeback Kid have created their own niche brand of music that resonates with disenfranchised youth as well as the next generation who are supposed to be maturing and refining their tastes. They are a band who don't care if you love or loathe their music, because as long as you have an opinion that means you have at least listened to their tunes. With their most recent album Heavy Steps, Comeback Kid have stepped things up a notch, maintaining their rage and indifference, but also return to their roots with an album sure to appeal to an even wider cross section of fans than ever before.Vocalist Andrew Neufeld joined HEAVY last week to chat about Heavy Steps and the rejuvenation of Comeback Kid."It's been awesome,” he smiled at the early reaction to the album. “We're supposed to be in Europe right now on an album release tour but because of the restrictions we had to cancel that to a future date. We kinda got the wind taken out of our sales. We'd just had a really great five or six months of touring and then we all got COVID over Christmas and got stuck in Seattle and Portland and stuff. It's a bit of a wah, wah, wah because we'd like to be playing shows right now but we'll do the tour next month and it's a lot of... the only kind of feedback I feel is stuff I see on line which is more than ever before. Every time we put out a different record it's a different era (laughs). It's fun, but you're just on your phone a lot looking at all the shit. It's different than playing a live show. I'm supposed to be in Germany right now, so..."Musically, Heavy Steps is a step backwards towards the earlier days of Comeback Kid, a fact Neufeld feels will appeal to the older fans of the band."It's mixed by Will Putney, that's pretty cool,” he said. “We tried to get a heavier tone on this record than previously. We talk a lot about writing some nostalgic Comeback Kid songs because we have earlier records that a lot of people connected with in the early 2000s so we've taken a few liberties here and there on different records and this record I would say is definitely the heaviest in tone and mix and the production is a notch above the previous records, but there's definitely a lot of nostalgic comeback Kid and old school Comeback Kid sounds on this record, which is some of the stuff that people who listen to our band connect with the most.”In the full interview Andrew talks more about the band returning to their roots, the guest spot by Joe Duplantier from Gojira, the early days of Comeback Kid and how the band has changed since, his transition from guitarist to frontman, their style of music and why it appeals to so many people, touring plans and more.

We had babies (well, our wives did) and we're back from our PITernity leave. And what a guest to come back with! Will Putney doesn't really need an introduction, but, just for our parents, he's a guitarist in New Jersey's premier deathcore band Fit For An Autopsy, and has also produced some of the best metal and hardcore records of the last 20 years - including releases from Knocked Loose, Body Count, Terror, Norma Jean, Gojira, Every Time I Die (RIP) and many, many more. We only had 30 minutes with Will due to his ridiculously tight schedule and there was so much more we'd love to have discussed. Still, we managed to chat about Fit For An Autopsy's incredible new release Oh What The Future Holds, how Will approaches producing his own music versus others, his friendship with Ice T, and, for the first time in aaaages, the Shameless Sunday pick isn't country music! Before Will jumps on the mic we discuss peanuts, babies, Avril Lavigne, the When We Were Young Festival and some fella in Kieran's town who's now internet famous. Who runs the world? Girls.
Will Putney, guitarist for Fit For An Autopsy and END, joins me to talk a bit about the bands new album and how cinematic the whole thing feels and if scoring films is in the cards for Will in the near future? We also talk about Will's producing career, and how he's able to work with so many bands who are constantly pushing the boundaries of a somewhat confining scene. The relationship he has with his bands to create these albums, and how he's quickly become one of the IT producers who's putting their stamp on the hardcore/metal genre with the likes of Ross Robinson or Terry Date etc. We wrap up with some Body Count / Ice T talk, working with someone so legendary, the wisdom Ice has shared with Will and how he applies it to his life and much more.
