For almost a dozen years, 34 Black women gathered monthly around a big dining room table in an orange house on Orange Street in Oakland, CA — meeting, cooking, dancing, strategizing — grappling with the issues of eviction, erasure, gentrification, inadequate health care, and the sex trafficking of Black women and girls overwhelming their community.Spearheaded by dancer and choreographer Amara Tabor-Smith and theater director Ellen Sebastian Chang, this House/Full of Black Women — artists, scholars, healers, nurses, midwives, an ice cream maker, a donut maker, an architect, a theater director, a choreographer, sex trafficking abolitionists and survivors — have come together to creatively address and bring their mission and visions to the streets. A thousand or so years ago, there lived an Irish archbishop named Malachy. And this archbishop supposedly had a series of visions about popes—past, present and future. According to the revelations in these visions, recorded in a document that was supposedly discovered around 1590, there would be only 112 popes between Malachy's time and the day of the final judgment. Today, some people think that the prophecy refers to our times, and that Pope Francis is that 112th pope, cryptically designated in the prophecy as “Peter the Roman.” But who was St. Malachy? Did he really have these visions and really record these prophecies? And why are some so fixated on the idea that Malachy's prophecy, also known as the “Prophecy of the Popes,” refers to Pope Francis? On this episode of the podcast, guest Joëlle Rollo-Koster talks about the origins and historical context of this prophecy, and whether it's something that Catholics should take seriously. Rollo-Koster is professor of Medieval history at the University of Rhode Island, College of Arts and Sciences. She received her undergraduate degree and master's degree in history from the University of Nice, in France, and later earned her PhD at SUNY Binghamton. She has done extensive scholarly research on the papal city of Avignon. Club + Resort Business Senior Editor Phil Keren recently had a conversation with Kevin Clarke and Nick Markel from the Country Club of Buffalo (CCB), which hosted its inaugural Sporting Clays Invitational in 2022. CCB had a team and three other clubs brought teams to the invitational: The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., the Longue Vue Club located near Pittsburgh, Pa. and The Country Club of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. Last year's competition went very well. They had great weather. After the shooting competition was done, many of the participants took advantage of the beautiful weather to play golf on CCB's course. This year's competition is Nov. 2-4. Nov. 2 is a practice day. The 3rd and 4th are competition days. The team from CCB won last year's team competition and will be trying to defend their crown this year. There will again be an opportunity for competitors to play golf on the course after the competition is over. There will be eight teams participating this year. Each team can bring six team members instead of five. While the phrase “biblical morality” is popular among many Christians, it is not especially meaningful, since Jesus is ambiguous on a lot of topics, in his teachings, and other topics he doesn't address at all. But there's one theme on which the teachings in the gospels, as well as the rest of the Christian and Hebrew scriptures, are straightforward: Those who have wealth are obliged to help the poor, and woe to them if they do not. Some scriptures even indicate that being wealthy at all is morally problematic: “Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God” (Matthew 19:24). The internet is filled with articles attempting to explain that such passages should not distress the well-off, or why in these particular cases Jesus didn't really mean what he said. But given how extensive and unambiguous biblical mandates about wealth are, Christians should take them seriously. We need to consider whether being rich is sinful, and if so, how sinful. But this means assessing what is meant by wealth or riches. How rich is too rich? What about different standards of living, from one culture to the next? And what about rich people who give a lot to the poor? On this episode of the podcast, hosts Emily Sanna and Rebecca Bratten Weiss talk to guest David Cloutier about the church's moral teachings on wealth. Cloutier is a professor of theology at the Catholic University of America. His recent books are Walking God's Earth: The Environment and Catholic Faith (Liturgical Press) and The Vice of Luxury: Economic Excess in a Consumer Age (Georgetown University Press). Cloutier is a regular contributor to U.S. Catholic's “Salt & Light” column. President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua suspended diplomatic ties with the Vatican over the weekend in what appears to be retaliation for the pope's strong public criticisms on March 10 of his “rude dictatorship,” likening it to “a communist dictatorship in 1917, or a Hitlerian one in 1935.” These comments were made by the pope in an interview with Infobae, an Argentine news outlet. “I have no other choice,” the pope said, “but to think that the person in power is mentally unbalanced.” On “Inside the Vatican” this week, host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., and veteran Vatican correspondent Gerard O'Connell are joined by senior editor Kevin Clarke to discuss the ongoing conflict between the Nicaraguan president and the Holy See. “There are so few independent voices left within Nicaragua,” Kevin says on the podcast. “Thousands of non-governmental organizations have been shut down. The independent press is essentially acting in exile to cover political developments in Nicaragua. The last man standing was the Catholic Church.” Later on, Ricardo and Gerry discuss another interview Pope Francis gave last week. In the interview with Elisabetta Piqué, who is Gerry's wife and a Rome-based correspondent for La Nacion, the Argentine news outlet, the pope again criticized the ongoing war in Ukraine, stopping short of labeling the wanton killings there a genocide, he also condemned what he called “the ideological colonization of gender,” and announced “everyone will have the right to vote” at the upcoming “Synod on Synodality,” settling a long-held question as to whether women would be allowed to vote for the first time in a church synod. The revelation has taken even senior Vatican officials by surprise. In celebration of Pope Francis' first decade at the helm of the Catholic Church, Ricardo and Gerry close the show sharing their abiding sense of Pope Francis. For Gerry, who has known the pope for 18 years, “this man is a pastor,” he says. “I have seen this at a very personal level, at a level of the family, but I see it also at the level of the leader of the Catholic Church in relation to Catholics, [and] in relation also to the people of the world.” “The phrase that he uses over and over is a ‘culture of encounter,'” Ricardo says. “He's somebody who is constantly trying to read where people are at, what people are struggling with, what people are talking about. Not shutting down conversations, but also not scared to say what he thinks in all of this.” Please consider supporting Inside the Vatican by purchasing a digital subscription to America at www.americamag.org/subscribe. "I never meant to cause you any sorrow, I never meant to cause you any pain..." True stories of what Prince's epic ballad means to different people around the world, from the very first jam in 1983 to the global hit that reigns over us today. Bobby Z, the drummer from Prince and The Revolution, remembers the buzz of the first ever performance of Purple Rain, and how the recording from that night lives on. Susan Rogers, Prince's recording engineer, tells stories from the Purple Rain tour, when the crew took bets on how long Prince's guitar solos would last. Comedian Sindhu Vee first heard the song as a teenager growing up in India and was knocked sideways by it. Weather reporter Judith Ralston describes the beautiful and rare weather phenomenon of purple rain. Social historian Zaheer Ali sees the song as a cry out for change, bringing audiences from different backgrounds together in cross-genre harmony. And finally, an intensive care hospital nurse played Purple Rain to Kevin Clarke while he was in a coma, because his sister knew he loved the song and hoped it might pull him through. Why should the Church bother with alleged private revelations? What criteria does the Church use to evaluate them? What are the possible dangers and fruits?
