Interview by Kris PetersSince forming in 2007, Counterparts have gone from the Hamilton, Ontario, underground to touring the world as one of Canada's most important and impactful musical exports. They've released seven full-lengths, with A Eulogy for Those Still Here landing in 2022. They've also released four EPs and a live album. Late last year they delighted fans with the surprise EP, Heaven Will Let Them Die, out via Pure Noise. The band has sold 250,000 albums through the course of its career, and their most recent headliner in support of AEFTSS was almost entirely sold out.And now, in great news for Australian fans, Counterparts are coming Down Under with Dying Wish for four dates as part of the Heaven Let Them Die tour. HEAVY caught up with frontman Brendan Murphy to talk music and touring. One of our questions centred around the 'surprise' release of Heaven Will Let Them Die and if he considered it a risk in the modern music world."For sure," he nodded. "I wasn't terribly concerned that there was a possibility of it backfiring. I don't think anybody who likes the band is gonna be, like, 'what? They didn't even tell us, this sucks'. You know what I mean? I think everybody was kind of stoked that there was something new. I think there is always a chance that it just gets lost if you don't dangle the keys in front of people's face. When you just drop it there's a chance that people can forget about it and I think maybe people have a little bit… but I think it's amazing because we put the EP out and said right, we're gonna tour in three months, see ya. I think, if anything, it was that that did it. Not the surprise. I think when you do something that plays into how short everyone's attention span is at the moment, I think it's just a move. That's the easiest way to get people, and so what if you're the hot topic and everyone's talking about it for a month or a week, and then they move on to something else. They were gonna move onto something else anyway, regardless of how long you teased it. I think it definitely worked for sure."In the full interview, Brendan talks more about the reasons behind jumping off the publicity train for their recent EP, the pros and cons of doing that, how it is the band's most authentic representation sonically, and where it stands in terms of future direction. We also take the time to run through the EP track by track, plus talk about what we can expect from Counterparts when they hit Australia in June.Tickets and more information at livenation.com.au.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

On the eve of the Bouncing Soul's release of Ten Stories High, Steve sits down with Greg Attonito to discuss the upcoming record. With Greg living in Idaho, and Zoom becoming the norm during the pandemic and the current landscape of the world, The Bouncing Souls took a different approach to this album. They threw away the pre-made lyric book and came in with a fresh outlook for the new music. They would have 40-minute Zoom chats to discuss the songs and arrange the music. All of this took place in a span of two weeks. That was the recipe to piecing together these highly anticipated songs. The excitement is in the air for this record, but I also had the chance to throw in several questions that have been on my mind for as long as I have been listening to The Bouncing Souls. Greg went down memory lane to discuss how Stoked for the Summer became a yearly gig in Asbury Park - stemming from their famous Home for the Holidays three day weekend that came around every year. Greg tells us about a Toots & The Maytals song The Bouncing Souls did during a live stream that will now make it's way on to a Pure Noise compilation. He dives into creating happy songs regardless of hard times that might appear in a song occassionally (for examples the song Anchors Aweigh- a song that came after a motorcycle trip on the heels of a breakup). Regardless of the situation, people will always recognize that the band are friends and that always comes out during songs. Lastly, we hear about several amazing stories about playing at City Gardens. On this episode I speak to Alex Melton, who in recent years has lit up YouTube with his smart, soulful, innovative punk pop covers of songs raging from those penned by Harry Styles, Third Eye Blind, Oasis, Foo Fighters, Taylor Swift and – my personal favourite, this – Hanson. I love a bit of ‘MmmBop', me. If you're thinking this sounds terrible, I can sympathise, but either via his YouTube channel - 370k subscribers, yo – or on his forthcoming debut album, Southern Charm, out on January 27th on Pure Noise, what Alex does so brilliantly is dig deep to find the magic buried at the very core of songs. And songs are great, right? We're all agreed on that. It's literally why you're here. I really enjoyed talking to Alex about process on this episode.Watch this episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toIaSEiMAiY Twitter - @jamesjammcmahon Substack - https://spoook.substack.com YouTube - www.youtube.com/channel/UC8Vf_1E1Sza2GUyFNn2zFMA Reddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/jamesmcmahonmusicpod/

Knocked Loose, the American hardcore band from Oldham County, Kentucky, are one of a small number of rock bands who might genuinely claim to be the most exciting band on the planet. They're one of the most interesting too. Hardcore might be the vessel they've chosen to music making, but it's not the ultimate destination. This has never been more apparent than throughout their ambitious new EP, A Tear in the Fabric of Life, out now on Pure Noise and a record that sees the band doing new things, in skill ways, that you've never heard them do before.I'm really happy with this chat with vocalist Bryan Garris, he's not a man I've heard interviewed much – and whenever I have heard him speak, he verbalises his thoughts in a fairly unique, quite languid, thoughtful style. But I think we got to some good places together. Over half an hour or so we talk grief, loss, therapy… but also just how ridiculous the music press can be. Our chat made me understand a band I already liked a lot more – which is kind of the point of all this, is it not. Dang I cant wait for that band to hit the UK next year. The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. Spoook is also a record label, a promoter, a shop, a Substack - it's many things. This is a fun episode – a conversation with Chris LoPorto from Keansburg, New Jersey emo pop heroes Can't Swim. They're a band I've really enjoyed the output of since their formation back in 2015 – 2017's Fail You Again was a record I played to death. 2018's This Too Won't Pass was a record I enjoyed greatly. But their new one, Change Of Plans – and there's a title relevant to these strange times, is it not – is perhaps their best. It's certainly their most eclectic. It's out on October 22nd, on Pure Noise, and comes highly recommended! The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. The pros of using white noise for babies is that it soothes them and can help them get the sleep they need. One study of newborns found that 80 percent exposed to white noise dozed off within five minutes, while only 25 percent of those without the background noise fell asleep as quickly. Use a low volume setting and stop playing it once baby falls asleep, if possible
