As someone who deeply values the importance of connecting people with nature, I was thrilled to have John Muir Laws as a guest on the latest episode of The Fancy Scientist podcast. Ever since completing my PhD and working with kids, I've recognized that fostering an emotional attachment to nature, especially during childhood, is a central solution to all conservation problems. Because when people aren't emotionally attached to nature, they won't know how to care about its decline and loss. These attachments are formed from experiences in nature. And what better way to cultivate that connection than through the beautiful practice of nature journaling?Nature journaling is the simple, yet profound act of using a notebook to record and draw your observations, questions, and reflections about the natural world around you. By slowing down and paying close attention to details, you not only deepen your appreciation for nature but also enhance your ability to remember and learn.John Muir Laws is a champion of this transformative practice. With a background in wildlife biology and a lifelong passion for nature exploration, he has dedicated himself to spreading the joy and wisdom of nature journaling across the globe. In an era where technology often disconnects us from the great outdoors, his mission to reconnect people with the natural world is more relevant than ever.In our conversation, John shared fascinating insights and practical tips for embracing nature journaling. We explored the benefits it offers for both children and adults, discussed strategies for overcoming the initial hesitancy (especially for us grown-ups!), and celebrated the sheer magic that unfolds when we immerse ourselves in the present moment, pen and notebook in hand.Specifically, we discussed:What exactly is nature journaling and how to get startedThe benefits of nature journaling and being out in natureThe power of nature journaling in fostering deep observation, curiosity, and wonderPractical techniques for engaging kids in nature journaling, including prompts and scaffoldingOvercoming the fear of "not being good enough" at drawing or writing, and embracing the journeyThe importance of role-modeling present, nature-connected behavior for childrenStrategies for making nature accessible and welcoming to people of all backgroundsAnd MORE!!Whether you're a seasoned nature lover or someone seeking to reignite your connection with the great outdoors, this episode is a delightful invitation to slow down, observe, and capture the beauty that surrounds us. So grab your notebook, sharpen those pencils, and get ready to embark on a journey of discovery and appreciation through the art of nature journaling.Happy journaling, my fellow nature enthusiasts!I'm Dr. Stephanie Manka (formerly Schuttler), a wildlife biologist of nearly 20 yrs with 20+ peer-reviewed scientific publications, author of the book Getting a Job in Wildlife Biology: What It's Like and What You Need to Know (https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Job-Wildlife-Biology-What/dp/B08JDYXS4G/) and founder of Fancy Scientist. Angela opened a new browser window and typed, start a virtual assistant business. The first 4 results in her search were adverts from popular platforms like Fiverr, Upwork and Udemy. As she scrolled further down the page she saw results from popular sites such as Time Doctor and Business Insider. She spent some time quickly reading through each result one at a time. Angela quickly took notes as she read and digested the content. She was listening to a podcast on her way to work and she heard about someone like her who makes $5,000 a month online. This person was working as a virtual assistant (VA) and Angela never heard of this role before. Let me know if you can relate to any of these. You've always wanted to be a virtual assistant but you're not sure how to get startedThe thought of leaving your secure corporate job scares you to deathYou're not sure if you have the skills to succeed as a VAFear of failure is your number one barrier to getting started If only there was a way to safely dabble and become a virtual assistant part-time just so that you can try it out. In this post, you'll learn the pros and cons of becoming a virtual assistant and what it actually takes to get started and become successful this year. What is a Virtual Assistant In case you've never heard of a virtual assistant before let's spend some time looking at who is a VA. According to Wikipedia, a virtual assistant is also known as a virtual office assistant. They are self-employed and provide professional assistance to an organisation. Another name for them is administrative assistants for online businesses. The services they provide can be administrative, technical or creative in nature. Generally speaking, these assistants provide support while working from home. Administrative Support This kind of administrative support can include calendar management, inbox support, email management, customer support, issuing invoices and client management. People who provide this support are normally called personal assistants. Technical Support While the phrase technical support may seem obvious a VA can assist with answering technical queries, troubleshooting software, software migration and technical set-up. Creative Support For those who prefer the creative side of the business, their services can include social media management, graphic design, social media strategy, copywriting and marketing. You might be surprised because none of the services provided by a VA is new or different from ordinary jobs. What makes virtual assistants unique is the fact that they mainly provide support to digital businesses compared to the familiar brick and mortar businesses. Virtual Assistant Pros So, let's spend some time looking at the advantages of becoming a virtual assistant. Looking at the VA pros will give you the motivation you need to step out in faith. Be your own bossWork your own hoursDecide your rate of payLive anywhere in the worldChoose your clients carefully Spending some time on each of these items will help you understand the possibilities better. 1. Be Your Own Boss As you can imagine being your own boss is a lot of fun because you get to decide on the work rules. Yes, it can be scary at first to have so much responsibility but if you run a sole proprietorship this is how life goes. It does take a lot of discipline and responsibility to be the CEO of your own business. You'll have to make a number of important decisions. 2. Work Your Own Hours Just because you run a business doesn't mean you have to work the same hours as everyone else. In fact, as the CEO you get to decide what time your start and when you finish each day. When you first get started it may mean working long hours to secure your first set of clients. However, when you get booked up you get to decide how many hours and days you'll work each week.

I can use those chairs!'” - Corrin Arasa“Everything that we have today is built up on those relationships we made early on.” - Corrin Arasa“What I realized was that those were going to be the early adopters… corporate. Although there are so many interesting things that you can do experientially and activation-wise, the wedding market was ready to adopt what we were doing and was really excited about it.” - Corrin Arasa“It is a very lonely thing being an entrepreneur sometimes, and so it's nice to have a community of people to bounce your ideas around with.” - Corrin Arasa “I built a business plan and a business model and a mantra and values... and everything that was really based on scaling and having work-life balance and bringing other people in.” - Corrin Arasa“While we eventually got to where I wanted to be, and we're still going, there were so many starts and stops along the way.” - Corrin Arasa“It was really intentional letting go to grow and realizing my skill set and my time is going to be far, far better spent on mentoring other people and working on the business rather than doing it myself. Because they're going to come with new ideas. They might not have done it exactly the same way that I do it-- they might do it better. They might come up with a new way to do it. And there are so many smart and talented people out there who can bring so much to the table. Maybe if it doesn't go off exactly well, we'll lose a client but it's not about that. It's really about building bigger so that we can all be better and learn and experience these things and improve the company overall.” -Corrin Arasa“I was pricing for me and now we're pricing to help the client understand their budgets a little better.” -Corrin Arasa“They needed content, and we needed content. And so we kind of gave them a cocktail and blasted the music, and sent them around the warehouse, and then told them to come back and create this design in an hour.” - Corrin ArasaResources:The E Myth by Michael E.
