As I was searching for other things, like the Luisiana Whistler, I came across several stories I just had to go into further. Things like what ever happened to Rudolf Diesel, the inventor of the engine. How about Ireland's Vanishing Triangle. The Circleville Writer, and the Catman of Greenock. There are some strange things going on around us.

The Circleville Letters mystery has captivated true crime enthusiasts for decades. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, residents of the small town of Circleville, Ohio, began receiving a series of threatening letters that were both vicious and strangely personal. The letters, signed by an anonymous writer who referred to themselves as "The Circleville Writer," targeted various individuals and were known for their detailed knowledge of the recipients' private lives. The situation escalated when a local school bus driver named Mary Gillespie received a letter that accused her of having an affair with the superintendent of schools. In this episode Robin Warder, my co-host from the Path Went Chilly, as well as the host of the Trail Went Cold tells Jeff from Indie Podcaster and I about the Circleville letters. Along the way we question the popular theories as to who the letter writer or letter writers may be. Support the show: patreon.com/julesandashleyHere is Robin's original Trail Went Cold description of the show/sources: August 19, 1977. Circleville, Ohio. After receiving a phone call, an angry Ron Gillispie frantically drives away from his home and dies after crashing into a tree. For the past several months, Ron's wife, Mary Gillispie, had been receiving anonymous threatening letters expressing anger about her alleged affair with another man. In total, over a thousand anonymous letters would be sent to residents of the area during this time period. Five-and-a-half years later, Mary would find a homemade booby trap containing a gun belonging to Ron's former brother-in-law, Paul Freshour. Paul is accused of being the author of the anonymous letters and spends ten years in prison for Mary's attempted murder, but the threatening letters continue to be sent while Paul is incarcerated. Was Paul Freshour the mysterious “Circleville Writer” or was he framed and wrongly imprisoned? For our special two-year anniversary show of “The Trail Went Cold”, we will be chronicling a case which was voted on by our listeners: the bizarre saga of “The Circleville Letters”. Vuonna 1976 Circlevillen pikkukaupungin asukkaat Ohion osavaltiossa alkoivat saamaan pelottavia kirjeitä kotiinsa. Kirjeet vaikuttivat monen ihmisen elämään ja saattoivat aiheuttaa ainakin yhden ihmisen kuoleman. American writer and literary critic Anatole Broyard once opined, “In an age like ours, which is not given to letter-writing, we forget what an important part it used to play in people's lives.” In the 1970s, the ability to instantly communicate through e-mails, texting, or social media was still decades away, so people employed the use of paper and pen, the mailman, and mailboxes to stay in touch. One of life's simple joys was writing and receiving letters. Through letters, people built friendships, sustained relationships, and strengthened romance. But for the residents of one small town in Ohio, the fun of exchanging letters was turned to terror when many of them received anonymous, vitriolic, and threatening handwritten messages. These poison pen letters of the mid-1970s came to be known as the “Circleville Letters,” and for nearly two decades, they spread fear through the mail in Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio.

This week we take a look at one of the most under appreciated unsolved mysteries...The Circleville Letters. In the late 70's a small town in the middle of Ohio...Circleville … started to receive threatening letters that divulged personal information about their lives. The most famous series of letters went to Bus Driver Mary Gillispie. These letters accused Gillispie of having an affair with the Super Intendant of Schools. The letter escalated to a series of events that would lead to the death of Gillispie's husband, an attempt on Mary's life, and the false imprisonment of her brother-in-law. Although they had a man in prison for these crimes....the letters continued and were being mailed from Columbus Ohio even though Mary's Brother-in-law was in solitary confinement in LIMA, Ohio.....BUT wait there's more!! If you're a fan of the SHOW Unsolved Mysteries you may remember this case from the early 90's. After initially airing this case, Robert Stack and his crew over at the Lifetime Network, received a letter stating: "“Forget Circleville, Ohio: Do nothing to hurt Sherriff Radcliff:If you come to Ohio, you el sickos will pay.” signed: “The Circleville Writer.”.....DOWNLOAD and LISTEN today to hear more! In 1977, a letter-writing campaign full of harassment and libelous accusations began. Ten years later, one man was dead, his wife had survived a murder attempt and their brother-in-law was in prison. What the heck happened? After over a week of reading news articles about the case, we have the undisputed answers.
Today we look at the theory that humans were not the first civilization on Earth and visit Circleville, Ohio to do a little light reading. The planet has been around for billions of years. And we have been around for only 100,000 years. So what happened in between? We're there other races that evolved to a stone using culture? Was there even past societies that rivaled our own? Anything over a million years would be impossible to find proof of. So is it possible that this planet is our soggy seconds? Then we travel to Circleville, Ohio where a series of letters tormented a woman for nearly 20 years. Some even think the letter writer killed her husband. And he/she definitely tried to kill her. But when "Unsolved Mysteries" gets involved, they also fall into the letter writer's crosshairs.
