In this episode of The Embellish Pod, we embark on a journey through the diverse and storied world of Highland whiskeys. If you stumbled upon this episode by chance, don't forget to hit the subscribe button to stay updated with our latest content. You can find video versions of this podcast on YouTube and all my links on Instagram and TikTok at @embellishpod. For more details, visit my website at www.embellishpod.com Exploring the Highlands Welcome to the Highlands, Scotland's largest and most diverse whiskey region. This vast area, encompassing everything north of an imaginary line from Greenock to Dundee (excluding Speyside), is known for its dramatic geographical contrasts and equally diverse whiskey styles. The region is divided into distinct sub-areas: Northern Highlands, Southern Highlands, East Highlands, and Western Highlands, each contributing unique characteristics to their whiskeys. Tasting Session During this episode, we feature four different Highland whiskeys: Dalmore 12 Year Old Dalmore 18 Year Old Glendronach Allardyce 18 Year Old Glenmorangie Signet Distillery Highlights Dalmore: Founded in 1839, Dalmore is known for its iconic stag logo and the expertise of Master Distiller Richard Patterson. The distillery uses innovative cask finishing techniques and water from the River Averon, creating whiskeys with rich, luxurious character. Glendronach: Founded in 1826, Glendronach is famous for its exclusive use of Spanish oak casks for maturation. The distillery's commitment to sherry cask maturation and traditional production methods creates consistent quality in their releases. Glenmorangie: Founded in 1843, Glenmorangie is known for its tall pot stills and innovative wood finishing techniques. The distillery's most distinctive expression, Signet, uses chocolate malt to create unprecedented flavors in Scottish whiskey. Highland Park: Founded in 1798, Highland Park embraces its Viking heritage and unique environmental conditions on Orkney. The distillery's traditional floor maltings and use of Orcadian peat create a signature balance between smoke and sweetness. Glassware and Tasting Notes We use the Glendale Whiskey Nosing Glass for this tasting session. This tulip-shaped glass enhances the nosing experience, revealing subtle aromatics and helping to distinguish between different Highland characteristics. However, it may not be ideal for all whiskey styles, and personal preference plays a significant role in the tasting experience. This episode showcases the remarkable range of Highland whiskeys, from traditional to innovative expressions. Each whiskey maintains its Highland identity while exploring different possibilities. The diversity within the Highland region makes it Scotland's most fascinating whiskey area. Join us in the next episode as we travel to Islay, where peat smoke and Atlantic storms create some of the world's most intense and distinctive whiskeys.

The first of three episodes inspired by David Campbell's mini-series on three remarkable brothers who ministered in 19th Century Scotland. Not as well known as his brothers Horatius and Andrew, his ministry unveils a steady commitment to parish ministry that eshewed distraction and worldly ambition.   Featured Content: – 'John James Bonar—The eldest of the three Bonar brothers', David Campbell, Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 721, October 2023. – Excerpt from A Scottish Christian Heritage, by Iain H. D., First Minister of Saint Andrew's Parish and Congregation, Greenock, Being some Record of Services in Connection with his Funeral (Greenock: James MacKelvie & Sons, 1892).   'Going Home'   'I'm going home!' the Saint exclaimed; Bright grew his closing eye; He thought of Jesus and his rest, And did not fear to die.   'I'm going home! I'm winged for flight To yonder peaceful clime; Prepared to go, I only wait My God's appointed time.   I'm going home, to dwell with Him Who bled and died for me; For He hath said that where He is There shall His servants be.   'I'm going home, transporting thought! Lord Jesus, quickly come, And bear my ransomed soul away To her celestial home!'   'I'm going home!' the Saint exclaimed; Bright grew his closing eye; He thought of Jesus and his rest, And did not fear to die.   We are grateful to Mr. Jack Adair for singing this hymn. But Shahid's passport tells us so much more – about the past but also about the present and perhaps even the future. Because it declared this man born in Lucknow who had lived all his life in British India to be a 'British Subject By Birth'. So when he travelled to England in the 1930s, it was not as a tourist. Not as a foreigner. Not as an immigrant. But as a British man. This was also the route taken by so many from the Caribbean in the 1940s and 1950s. They were coming 'home' as part of the so-called Windrush Generation and had no more need to prove their status than someone who lived in Tunbridge Wells or Greenock. It's a fascinating listen – and if you've not had the chance to hear the full episode, head over to trappedhistory.com for more.

James Watt, the ingenious inventor, is often celebrated for his transformative contributions to the world of beer with his creation of the "Double IPA." Born in 1736 in Greenock, Scotland, Watt demonstrated a keen aptitude for innovation from a young age. His fascination with brewing and a desire to enhance the potency and flavor of beer led him to develop the Double IPA, a revolutionary advancement in brewing technology.Watt's Double IPA was a remarkable departure from traditional brewing methods. Drawing inspiration from the principles of steam power, Watt ingeniously harnessed the essence of hops and barley to create a brew that packed twice the hoppy punch and alcoholic strength of conventional ales. His pioneering techniques in fermentation and hop infusion resulted in a beer that was not only more robust in flavor but also boasted a higher alcohol content, delighting beer enthusiasts and brewers alike. The Double IPA, much like Watt's steam engine, sparked a revolution in the brewing industry. Its introduction marked a new era of brewing excellence, characterized by bolder flavors and heightened intoxicating effects. Watt's innovation catapulted the Double IPA to prominence, earning it a distinguished place in the pantheon of craft beers.Watt's legacy as the mastermind behind the Double IPA endures to this day, with breweries worldwide paying homage to his pioneering spirit by crafting their own interpretations of this beloved beer style. Through his ingenuity and vision, James Watt forever altered the landscape of brewing, leaving an indelible mark on the history of beer. ★ Support this podcast ★

During the 1980s, forensic science was still in its early stages, lacking the advanced techniques we have today. However, over the subsequent couple of decades, remarkable strides were made in the field. DNA testing, fingerprint analysis, and fibre testing emerged, ushering in a new era of forensic capabilities. With these breakthroughs, cold cases that had long remained unsolved began to be revisited, utilizing the power of modern investigative techniques. Among these cases was the tragic 1986 murder of a teenage girl, whose lifeless body was discovered just a short distance from her own front door in Greenock, Scotland.SPONSORS - Zocdoc: Thank you to Zocdoc for sponsoring this episode! It's a big strategic project, providing better homes for their tenants, and better living for a whole community on the River Clyde. They're being very ambitious and they're well aware that they won't meet all of their lofty aspirations, but what they're achieving already feels pretty significant. Approaching asset development and renewal with a long-term vision that is addressing: fuel poverty, demand reduction, localised energy generation and distribution, community wealth building, and even a carbon offsetting scheme that could really make a difference. Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

At a primary school in Greenock, Scotland, three teachers on maternity leave brought their babies to school every two weeks to interact with schoolchildren. Playtime with babies teaches children empathy, or care and feeling for others. Most receptive often are the children who are “a little challenging,” as one teacher put it. “It’s often [they] who interact more on a one-to-one level.” They learn “how much hard work it is to take care of a child,” and “more about each other’s feelings as well.” Learning from an infant to care about others isn’t a new idea to believers in Jesus. We know the One who came as the baby Jesus. His birth changed everything we understand about caring relationships. The first to learn of Christ’s birth were shepherds, a humble profession involving care of weak and vulnerable sheep. Later, when children were brought to Jesus, He corrected disciples who thought children unworthy. “Let the little children come to me,” he said, “and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Mark 10:14). Showing the essence of empathy, Jesus “took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them” (v. 16). In our own lives, as His sometimes “challenging” children, we could be considered unworthy, too. Instead, as the One Who came as a child, the Lord accepts us with His love—thereby teaching us the caring power of loving babies and all people.

As part of the intimate event, the company's first ceremonial godfather, George Herbert, the 8th Earl of Carnarvon, offered a blessing of good fortune and safe sailing for the ship—an evolution of the naval tradition that dates back thousands of years. Designed specifically to navigate the Nile, the state-of-the-art ship was built at Massara shipyard in Cairo and will sail Viking's bestselling Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary. The naming of the Viking Osiris comes as Egypt marks several key events this year, including the highly anticipated opening of the new Grand Egyptian Museum outside of Cairo on the Giza Plateau and the 100th anniversary of the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb by the world's most famous Egyptologist, Howard Carter, and his benefactor and co-explorer, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon. The Viking Osiris & Viking's Growing Egypt FleetHosting 82 guests in 41 staterooms, the new, state-of-the-art Viking Osiris is inspired by Viking's award-winning river and ocean ships with the elegant Scandinavian design for which Viking is known. The vessel features several aspects familiar to Viking guests, such as a distinctive square bow and an indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace. The Viking Osiris joins the Viking Ra, which launched in 2018. Additionally, in response to strong demand, the Viking Aton, an identical sister ship to the Viking Osiris, will join the fleet in 2023. During today's naming event in Luxor, Hagen also announced that two more sister ships, the Viking Hathor and the Viking Sobek, are already under construction and will be delivered in 2024 and 2025, respectively.MSC Cruises has announced an update to its Northern Hemisphere Winter 2022/23MSC Virtuosa will replace MSC Preziosa in Northern Europe, offering the planned ‘Northern Pearl' sailings – a newly introduced winter itinerary in 2021. The campaign blends new luxury experiences with places and people at its heart, doubling down on a message of inclusivity. The campaign's television spot opens by posing the question, “How many precious moments have we missed?”, before taking the viewer on a journey filled with experiences and wonders one might not immediately associate with a cruise.Set to a remix of Louis Armstrong's iconic life-affirming ballad “What a Wonderful World,” the spot draws on the lyrics, enticing the viewer at every moment to return to experiencing the fullness of life.  The spot also reminds viewers that there are new safety considerations in today's travel environment that Celebrity Cruises takes seriously. Like many other travel brands, Celebrity Cruises paused its operations in March 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic took hold. After nearly 16 months, it became the first cruise operator to sail with passengers from both North America, and then, the first to sail from a U.S. port when Celebrity Edge left Fort Lauderdale on June 26 for a seven-night cruise of the Caribbean.https://youtu.be/uQet84z_quECarnival Corporation to Provide Convenient Access to Pre-Board Testing (USA only) The world's largest cruise company, today announced a new initiative making pre-board testing more convenient and accessible for its guests.
