Early sobriety is an emotional and tender time, so I wanted to share with you my diary of my first 30 days sober, which has somehow turned into 6 continuous years alcohol-free. 6 years ago I woke up on the couch at 3am after drinking a bottle of wine. I came upstairs to crawl into bed with my husband filled with anxiety and unable to fall back to sleep. In the morning I had to get up, get ready and take my kids to school with a headache, bloodshot eyes and a hangover while trying to ignore my husband's question of “how are you feeling this morning?” And while that morning was no different than many others, somehow on that day I decided that I couldn't do this to myself anymore. I had been trying to cut back on my drinking and moderate it, but it wasn't working. I realized that I had to make a change and take a break from drinking and I needed support. So I reached out to a sober coach, Belle Robertson of Tired Of Thinking About Drinking, and signed up to work with her. Solo Podcast on my journey to 500 days with out the bottle! Solo Podcast Episode Description: "500 Days Without the Bottle - My Journey" In the Shed with Ryan In this powerful solo episode, join me, Ryan, as I take you on an intimate journey through my battle with alcohol addiction and the incredible milestone of reaching 500 days of sobriety. This episode of "In the Shed with Ryan" delves deep into the personal struggles, societal pressures, and transformative moments that have shaped my path to recovery. I open up about my younger years when drinking was a daily ritual that often led to dangerous and destructive behavior. From multiple arrests to days spent in a drunken haze without eating, my life was spiraling out of control. Society often normalizes excessive drinking, but behind the facade, it causes severe physical and mental health issues. Facts About Alcohol: Health Impacts: Chronic alcohol use can cause liver disease, cardiovascular problems, and increase the risk of cancers such as liver, mouth, and breast cancer. In 2023, alcohol-related incidents resulted in approximately 3 million deaths globally (World Health Organization (WHO)) (World Health Organization (WHO)). Mental Health: Alcohol exacerbates depression and anxiety and leads to significant mental health consequences. It is highly addictive and often results in dependency, cognitive impairment, and brain damage (World Health Organization (WHO)) (World Health Organization (WHO)). Social Consequences: Alcohol misuse contributes to violence, accidents, and legal issues. It can severely impact personal relationships and professional life, leading to job loss and financial problems (World Health Organization (WHO)) (World Health Organization (WHO)). The turning point came when I realized I couldn't continue living this way. I share the steps I took to get sober, from seeking help to building a support network. Therapy played a crucial role in my recovery, providing the tools and support needed to stay on track. Comparison with Crack Cocaine: Crack Cocaine: This highly addictive substance causes severe health issues, including heart attacks and respiratory failure. It has a high potential for addiction and leads to significant mental health problems such as paranoia and hallucinations. While alcohol is legal and widely used, crack cocaine's illegal status and potent effects make its consequences even more severe (Homepage – IARC) (Cancer Info Hub). Therapy has been a cornerstone of my recovery, and I want to help you access the same support. BetterHelp has been instrumental in connecting me with a therapist who truly understands my struggles. In this episode of the 1000 Days Sober podcast, host Lee Davy returns after a hiatus to discuss the profound journey of conscious parenting and living a self-led life. Lee delves into the concept of the "inside-out" versus "outside-in" game, a theory introduced by Dr. Michael Beckwith, and how it applies to everyday interactions, particularly with children. Lee shares personal anecdotes about his struggles and triumphs in building a stronger connection with his daughter, Zia. He emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, responsibility, and the role of internal parts in shaping our responses to external challenges. The episode also explores how living consciously can help parents not only quit alcohol but also lead more fulfilling lives. Listeners will gain insights into practical strategies for improving relationships with their children and themselves, including the significance of presence, curiosity, rupture and repair, and maintaining integrity. Lee offers guidance on navigating the complexities of parenting while fostering a nurturing environment for both external and internal "children." Join Lee as he outlines nine core principles that have helped him succeed in his parenting project and learn how these principles can be applied to live a more conscious, self-led life.
In this episode, I catch up with Michelle French, a HIQA grads member, for her second appearance on the podcast. We chat about some big challenges Michelle has faced over the last two years, like being the designated driver during a 30th birthday winery tour, discussing how she managed her cravings on the day and how playing the craving forward, with honestyWe explore how Michelle has embraced her creative side as a form of meditation, helping her find peace and focus. Now, two years into her sobriety, she finds that thoughts of alcohol rarely cross her mind—a place she once thought was way out of reach. Her story has not only transformed her own life but has also been a source of inspiration for her son and those around her.Michelle opens up about the difficult times, including the hospitalisation and passing of her mother, and how even though it was a tough time she stayed committed to her sobriety through it all. We talk about the day she almost threw in the towel and gave into the SB but reached out for support which kept her from drinking. Through these stories, Michelle shows us that sobriety is a deeply personal but also fulfilling journey. Her reflections remind us that we can face life's biggest challenges and emotions while staying true to the person we aspire to be. Michelle's journey is a beautiful example of resilience and the power of doing things your own way. I love her so much. I hope you love this episode too. Significant brain healing can happen within the first few months of being sober. Finally some good news for us, right? In this episode you'll learn more about how alcohol damages the brain to make it harder to stay sober and how the brains of people who are able to stay sober differ from those who go on to relapse. It's not just deciding that you're done with drinking and that's it. That's what we observe other people do who aren't addicted and then we feel like losers with no self-control when we do the same. The problem is, when you drink heavily long term it changes your brain and this makes it hard for the brain to function properly. In this episode we discuss some of the lessons we've learned in 4,000 days of sobriety. We discuss pain management, and our partnership with Aleve in their new awareness campaign called "The Painful Truth." Our story is as much about healthy and safe pain management as it is addiction recovery and we discuss what pain management looks like today. We get personal and talk about the beauty of a recovered life and our family weekend where every aspect of the lessons we learned were on display. Patience, gratitude, mindfulness and presence, spirituality, reframing positivity and hope, and acceptance were all on display within a short time period and it's important to remember that things CAN get better if you're willing to work for it.Find video clips and full length video from this episode on YouTube and our other social media pages! On the web:www.twfo.comOnline Course: www.independentlystrong.comUse code WHEELIES75 for 75% off the entire course!Follow us on TikTok:https://tiktok.com/@twfo_coupleFollow us on Instagram:https://instagram.com/twfo_couple/Follow us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/TWFOCoupleFollow us on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@twfo_coupleFind Taylor Counseling Group:https://taylorcounselinggroup.com/Donate to Counseling for the Future Foundation:Donate Here

Oli Hollis is an HPD-accredited Clinical Hypnotist and a registered Physiotherapist with the HCPC. His speciality is managing pain, particularly in conditions like fibromyalgia, employing years of expertise. Oli also uses hypnosis as a remarkable tool to aid in managing diabetes through dietary changes, promote weight loss for those facing orthopaedic surgeries, and encourage healthier lifestyle choices. Beyond physical health, Oli assists individuals in overcoming addictions, such as smoking and excessive drinking. His work doesn't stop there. He addresses various anxiety-related issues, helping people conquer everything from stage fright to specific phobias. For general anxiety cases, Oli uniquely combines the principles of psychology and hypnotherapy; if the situation calls for it, he collaborates with doctors and clinical psychologists. Oli is also a STRIVER who recently celebrated 1000 days AFAF, so I asked him to come onto the show. If you want to hire Oli, here is how to do so. If you have difficulties with your alcohol cravings or are worried about facing them, download our free mini course - The Crush Your Alcohol Cravings Cheat Code.
