Journalist Lucia Osborne-Crowley was among a handful of people who witnessed the trial and sentencing of Ghislaine Maxwell. In 2021, Maxwell was convicted for her role in Jeffrey Epstein's abuse of four girls. Osborne-Crowley's legal expertise has played a key role in the coverage surrounding the trial - and she's since used her findings to write a book, The Lasting Harm: Witnessing the trial of Ghislaine Maxwell. She says covering the trial a foot away from Ghislaine Maxwell herself was an 'unsettling' experience. "She still managed to communicate with me, she made a lot of eye contact with me, she winked at me once - she drew a picture of me at one point, which was very unsettling." One thing that we often do not prioritize is celebrating our wins. As I reflected on 2023, I was tempted to jump straight to the flaws and weaknesses, but I wanted to take a few minutes to list out what I was proud of, what I accomplished, and use that as ammunition to develop a plan for 2024. The cognitive benefits to celebrating your wins and sharing them with others, like posting it in the Entrepreneurial Court Reporters Facebook group, are often underestimated but should not be. So here's an example of me reflecting on the positive from 2023 first, and I encourage you to do the same! As I look back on a year of transformation, from launching the Court Reporter Podcast to embracing personal coaching and development, I've celebrated victories and navigated challenges that have reshaped my world. Join me to discover how these experiences have enriched our community, from the growth of our Facebook group to the workshops that have connected us as colleagues and friends. I'm excited to unveil new ways for you to be part of our podcast conversation. Slam the Gavel welcomes back Mark Andrews to the podcast. Mark was last on Season 2, Episode 80, Season 3, Episodes 13 and 23, as well as Season 4, Episodes 116 and138. Mark Andrews discussed his GREAT NEWS, concerning updates to his Federal Court case. His attorney is Eric Wafer has called this Mark's "lighting of multiple fires." Apparently, transcripts submitted were false. The transcriptionist is Becky Peterson and her transcripts were submitted to the Transcription Board, were it then took five months to review four pages. They missed half the information in it, but they did find that there were DIFFERENCES and cited her for gross negligence and they fined her for $1,000.00. Mark and his attorney now have public acknowledgment that the transcripts that were submitted in court are FALSE. They wouldn't say fraud, they went with the "Actus reus" they looked at the action in the document. They didn't look at the "Mens rea," to show that she actually committed fraud: Eric Wafer and the investigator contacted the transcriptionist and told her that they have two transcripts and they are wrong and she did nothing. Santa Rosa PD came out twice and told them she didn't have the notes anymore. She also DID NOT NOTIFY THE COURT. Again, told by the police there are two transcripts, then the Court Reporter's Board demanded her notes and they MIRACULOUSLY appeared. They ruled against her. However, no one told the Federal Court that the submission by the county state court was fraudulent, was fake, was not an actual copy of what was said in court. This has serious ramifications. Did the Court Reporter's Board tell the Federal Court? That didn't happen. There is no acknowledgment of it. The AG, County Council and Attorney for the Judge Fightmaster have all admitted that she denied Mark's civil rights and due process and didn't get his hearing. They have seen the transcripts as they were submitted in Mark's filings. All have remained silent. It is a complete coverup. To Reach Mark Andrews: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.com This episode of Slam the Gavel is sponsored by CPSprotect Consulting Services. Jozef Puska has been described as a 'vicious monster' by Ashling Murphy's family after he was convicted of the school teacher's murder. The 33-year-old Slovakian native was unanimously found guilty of the schoolteacher's murder along the Grand Canal in Tullamore on January 12th, 2022. Mr Puska, with an address at Lynally Grove, Mucklagh, Co Offaly, will be handed a mandatory life sentence, with a hearing to take place next week. On Friday's Morning focus, Alan Morrissey was joined by Andrew Lowth, a Court Reporter with Bauer Media and also by Hilary Tonge a Development Worker with the Women's Collective Ireland Clare branch to discuss yesterday's outcome of a guilty verdict and to highlight violence against women.
Slam the Gavel welcomes back Karielee Barrere to the podcast. She was last on Season 3, Episode 113 and Season 4, Episode 50. Joining us briefly was Phillip Simon who was last on the podcast Season 5, Episode 17. We discussed the corrupt Family Court system in San Diego, California and those involved entertaining the deceit. Apparently Karielee and Phillip had the same judge, Sharon L. Kalemkiariam who is nicknamed, "The Closer." So if your case is running a lengthy amount of time, even if she is out of her jurisdiction, she flat out doesn't care. We also talked about Judge Michael T. Smyth who is very guarded about letting there be recordings in the Family Courtroom although they run continuously in Small Claims Court. Karielee discussed what parents go through as they have to pay $500.00/per hour for a Court Reporter, $2-3,000.00 for the transcript and $700.00/per hour for an attorney only to not receive justice. This was a highly informative podcast on the goings on in San Diego, that brags about caring for the vulnerable. Karielee explained what a Peremptory Challenge is, how to file a Peremptory Challenge and Karielee's solution to avoiding judges in San Diego, CA.To Reach Karielee: karieleescloset@gmx.com and she will be starting her website soon.To Reach Phillip Simon: phillipsimon56@gmail.comThis episode of Slam the Gavel is sponsored by CPSprotect Consulting Services. The federal rules and their state equivalents do not authorize reporters to designate a method of recording. But one national court reporting conglomerate has just instructed its reporters to begin videotaping remote depositions as a matter of course, purportedly as "backup media." But given the absence of regulation regarding reporter backup recordings, what should you do to protect your deponents against the use, misuse or even sale of backup video recordings? (At least one reporting organization says backup media when made by a reporter at his or her own discretion "is the personal property of the CSR (certified shorthand reporter)." In this episode, Jim offers practice tips on handling situations where the reporter attempts to videotape your deposition without notice or consent.SHOW NOTESOnline Pamphlet, "Best Practices for the Use of Backup Audio Media," Court Reporter's Board of California, approved March 1, 2015, https://www.courtreportersboard.ca.gov/formspubs/best_practice.pdf (discussing use and possible sale of court reporter backup recordings as a "value-added service," and stating that the recordings, absent law or court order, are the legal property of the reporter)Maldonado v. Johnson, Case No. 3:22-cv-18229-TKW-ZCB, 2023 WL 5805583 (N. D. Fla. Brian and Shant discuss the crisis created by the lack certified court reporters in California. The shortage means that many cases don't get a court reporter or that lawyers and clients are spending thousands of dollars to hire a private court reporter. Why has this happened? Two reasons: First, the passage rate for the court reporter certification exam is painfully low, around 20%. Second, the union which represents the court reporters continues to block any effort to use electronic recording or transcriptions as an alternative. They claim the technology isn't good enough, which is false. The result is impending crisis where many people don't have access to justice. Next Brian and Shant talk about Disney's lawsuit against Ron DeSantis. DeSantis recently revoked Disney's rights of governance over their property area called Reedy Creek. Some people say it's a trumped up lawsuit that won't go anywhere, but Brian and Shant say that the “takings clause” in the 5th Amendment is very strong and that DeSantis's blatant public comments about retaliating against Disney for disagreeing on his stance on LGBTQ+ rights makes the lawsuit meritorious and could spell trouble for DeSantis. If there's one piece of advice Irene Nakamura wants you to take to heart, it's this: Your success begins when you expand beyond others' expectations for you. Irene Nakamura is the Founder and Principal of iDepo Reporters and iDepo Hawaii LLC, a woman and minority-owned court reporting firm providing both in-person and remote depositions, e-filing, subpoena and process serving, and record retrieval services to attorneys, law firms, legal secretaries and paralegals. iDepo operates two independent companies in Los Angeles and Honolulu, Hawaii, with a network of 100+ culturally-diverse court reporters and staff, nationwide. In addition to a high degree of professionalism, iDepo is known for providing an excellent workplace environment. With nearly 30 years of court reporting experience, Irene is also a Registered Professional Reporter, a Realtime Reporter, and a certified LiveNote Reporter with certifications in California, Hawaii, Washington, Nevada, and Illinois. Prior to founding iDepo, Irene served as an Official Court Reporter for the Honorable Robert M. Takasugi and the Honorable George H. King at the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Since 1991, Irene has reported on complex cases for national and international law firms including high – profile cases involving the Mexican and Armenian Mafia and several groundbreaking business cases. She has also reported corporate meetings for the Screen Actors Guild, among others. By founding her own court reporting agency, Irene has become the first Japanese - American woman to do so in Southern California, perhaps in the nation. As hard as it may be for anyone to start a business, Irene says it is especially difficult coming from her background. A brand born out of determination Looking at Irene's success, it's easy to assume that she was encouraged every step of the way. But while addressing cultural nuances, Irene shares that for her, this wasn't exactly the case. Irene Nakamura's mother raised her to be a good wife and mom - but the emphasis was not necessarily on education. Beyond high school, Irene was informed that she had to wait to enroll in college until her brother graduated university. Irene was not having it. After all, her brother was pursuing a double Master's degree - and Irene was not about to wait to start her life until his graduation date. Instead, she worked full-time to put herself through trade school as a court stenographer. She didn't even understand what it was, but she took to it naturally. Despite the challenges of becoming certified - stenographers have to pass their licensure exam with aa solid A+ and at least a 95% accuracy rate - Irene thrived and quickly became beloved to her clients for her follow-through, attention to detail and dedication. Relationships build better companies Irene Nakamura did not set out to become an entrepreneur. She was frequently requested by name and became a staple of the court reporting community, and nourished her relationships with others in her field. But the inspiration for starting her own business came out of a troubling moment in her career. Irene was requested on a case and communicated that she had surgery that week, so she wouldn't be able to turn in her transcripts until the following week. Nevertheless, the client insisted on working with her. Despite her communication, she woke up from surgery to harassing messages from people waiting for her transcripts - and realized that it was time to make a change. Her own family, watching her work while recovering and on a holiday, suggested that she start her own company. Upon launching iDepo, many of Irene's former clients chose to work with the company long-term. Relationships are everything to Irene, and nurturing her client partnerships paid off in a big way when she started her own brand! Creating opportunities for others Irene was beloved by her clients, but she observed that the working conditions for court reporters could be improved. Starting her own company meant that she could have a profound influence on the trade - and change lives along the way. Now with three locations and growing, Irene says that her biggest goal is growing an excellent team. iDepo works on a national level, providing services in courts across the United States. The company is in a time of rapid expansion. WIth more graduates looking for stable employment in a trade that impacts lives, court stenography is a fantastic and marketable skill to learn - and iDepo is a company born out of excellence. Quotes “When I was young, I was conditioned to follow the path my mom had led for me. She was grooming me to become a good wife and mother, and that was my path.” “It was all born out of relationships. I was getting so much work, there was no way I could do it by myself. I needed to start hiring.” “One of the biggest challenges is the people you work with. Hiring and making sure you have a really good team you can count on. They need to have a really good attitude and an entrepreneurial spirit, I like that even as part of a team. I want them to work well together. Sometimes your coworker might need help! I do my best to cultivate that type of environment.” “At first I really struggled to put myself out there. I had built my business on relationships but I got to a point where I needed to expand beyond those relationships. I had to have a website, marketing, social media, and being on amazing podcasts like yours to bring brand awareness…” “We have to pass our national test at 95% accuracy, at 225 words per minute with two people speaking. There aren't many exams given for a career that you have to have an A in order to pass, not just an A but an A+. One technicality can make or break a case.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit the website for iDepo at https://ideporeporters.com/company-idepo-team/ Connect with Irene Nakamura on LinedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/irene-nakamura/ Check out Irene's feature in Medium Magazine's “Power Women” series: https://medium.com/authority-magazine/power-women-irene-nakamura-idepo-reporters-on-how-to-successfully-navigate-work-love-and-life-as-209de062481 Read Irene's shout-out in Shoutout LA's piece Guardian of the Record: https://shoutoutla.com/meet-irene-nakamura-guardian-of-the-record-founder-of-idepo-reporters-and-idepo-hawaii/

Karen Santucci is a veteran court reporter who is now the Director of the Court Reporting Program at Plaza College in Forest Hills, New York. Court reporters play an essential and required role in judicial proceedings, plus they do captioning work when requested in relation to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA.) It's a cool way to get into the courtroom without being a lawyer or judge, or it allows you to learn about all sorts of things while doing captioning! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Court reporters have a critical role in legal proceedings, which require an exact record of what occurred. These workers are responsible for producing a complete, accurate, and secure transcript of depositions, trials, and other legal proceedings." In regards to captioning work, this is closed captioning on televisions, and also with college students, business meetings, or anyone that requests to have a court reporter to take down the meeting, lesson, or event on the steno machine.Karen Santucci began her court reporting career right after high school. After graduating Stenotype Institute in Manhattan , she started working at the Queens County Grand Jury where she eventually became the Assistant Supervisor of the Grand Jury Reporters. After many years, she left to raise her 3 children. In 2001, she returned to the field as a court reporting instructor and realized her true calling was teaching and encouraging people to enter this great profession. Now, she's helping the next generation of court reporters through her role as an educator. We discuss how diverse and flexible this career path is (so it's awesome for moms looking for jobs with flexible schedules) and how they need more people now. Demand is high, and people just don't know about this job and how many opportunities there are in the courts, classrooms, or even at the Grammy's!ResourcesNational Court Reporters Association (NCRA) Plaza College -- School of Court ReportingContact Info:Karen Santucci - Guestksantucci@plazacollege.eduJulie Berman - Hostwww.womenwithcooljobs.com@womencooljobs (Instagram)Julie Berman (LinkedIn)
