Might you need some energy after some time cooped up with 'social distancing'? Well I think this show will have you covered.. true primal Dead here.. the frantic scorching solos from Garcia on most of these might not be everyone's cup of tea, but this is a great presentation of where the band came from and what the sound was like back in 1967. This was the third time they had played Winterland and the day after their first album had been released. The Pigpen tunes here are real gems. He sounds on top of his game. Chuck Berry was also on this bill, and played between the 1st and 2nd Dead sets. The second set in particular is fascinating. Check out the great electric versions of 'Cream Puff War' and 'Viola Lee Blues' they practically blow the roof off the place ! There are some understandable flaws in this recording and a couple cuts.. still I hope it brings a smile and gives you a respite from our dystopian present. One of my favorite periods of Dead music to explore is this January 1969 run at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco CA, and this week I decided to feature this set form January 26th. Is it complete? probably not.. is it pristine? certainly not the opening Cryptical which has a spot not far from the beginning that will test your patience.. be patient it is worth it, most of this tape sounds *great*, both in sound quality and the quality of the music. This set contains a rare version of 'Clementine'.. check out the lyrics.. it's quite a rarity. The 'Death Don't Have No Mercy' is as powerful as ever.. and the rest of the set, from 'Dark Star' on is pure powerful psychedelic Grateful Dead. These versions of 'The Eleven' and 'Turn on Your Lovelight' were used for the 'Live/Dead' release.

I'm joined by guest Phil Stacey as we discuss the Grateful Dead's first official live album, Live/Dead. Show notes: - Recorded at CompCon world HQ - Live/Dead was released in 1969 - There weren't a lot of live albums released then - The band did it as a make-good to the label after some poor-selling albums - Recorded at the Fillmore West - Songs evolved in live setting - At the time, it was unusual to play extended jams - Music fans really focused on albums back in the heyday of vinyl - The first thing you hear on the album is 23-minute "Dark Star" - Now for the tuning section - Phil: Have listened to 250-300 Dead bootlegs - Bootleg tape trading was huge in the '70s and '80s - Archive.org, Nugs.net have tons of Dead shows - On a lot of '70s-era live albums, bands went in and re-recorded songs or parts of songs - Some bands perfectly recreate their studio sound - "Death Don't Have No Mercy" is reminiscent of Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You" - When this album came out, FM radio was in a very experimental place - Some stations would play album sides or even entire records - "St. Stephen" is a standout - Jay: I've been impressed so far - Phil explains the Dead to his kids - Seeing a dude doing coke off his dashboard at a Dead show Completely Conspicuous is available through the iTunes podcast directory. Subscribe and write a review! The opening and closing theme of Completely Conspicuous is "Theme to Big F'in Pants" by Jay Breitling. Voiceover work is courtesy of James Gralian.
William Boyle was last on Book Talk to discuss his collection of short stories, Death Don't Have No Mercy. His novel Everything is Broken was recently published exclusively in France. His first published novel was Gravesend, and his new novel, The Lonely Witness, is set in the same New York neighborhood with a few familiar characters, but it isn't really a sequel.
A fresh new year brought to my mind a good time to hear the band when they sounded fresh and young - - thus this week's Deadpod from 1/16/70 at Springer's Inn in Portland Oregon. This is the start of what was a momentous year for the band, and we can hear the enthusiasm and talent of each of them on this fine recording. While there are no long jams or songs on this recording, there is a passion and energy in each of these songs that is a treat to listen to. I'll play the first part of this recording this week and the second next; while there are some cuts and anomalies, I think you'll agree that it has held up its sonically remarkably well. This week with the start of a new year, I decided to take a look back to a truly fecund period for the band - early 1969. We have an exceptional sounding recording of a show that took place back on January 17th, 1969 in Santa Barbara, California. This recording shows how the band is ready to take off during this seminal year that saw the release of both Aoxomoxoa and Live Dead. The tape starts with a typically rousing 'Lovelight' (some have claimed to be able to tell that Pigpen was even more lit than usual here :) and then goes into a wonderful Dark Star. Saint Stephen and the Eleven follow, and you'll especially enjoy the jamming in the latter. The 'Death Don't Have No Mercy' that follows is for me one of the highlights of this performance.. slow and spooky.. just perfect. The band that rages into a 'That's It For the Other One', followed by their 3rd performance of a sloppy 'Cosmic Charlie' .. all in all a great 90 minutes of primal Dead.. Ask and you shall receive.. at least sometimes.. :) this week's Deadpod was the result of a request just posted on the Facebook page for 8/23/68.. this is a great performance and a pretty damm good tape.. it took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles CA the night before 'Two From The Vault' was recorded.. this features the Dead during one of their most creative periods. I just love the energy on this tape.. the opening Other One on this tape just crackles with it.. The Dark Star is full of Pigpen's funky organ in that characteristic early opening.. The Eleven is one of my favorite versions ever.. and there's really no words to describe the Alligator->Caution.. this is the highlight of an incredible show.. dig it. Be well everyone!
In casting about for a show to fit some recent requests, I came across this well-known yet astonishing work of unparalleled psychedelia. Unfortunately there is no Pigpen on this night (or the next) which is what my listener had requested, however I'm confident that the peerless jamming and enthusiasm present on this recording will allow me to be excused for that omission. This show starts with an excellent Dark Star (and its so nice to hear it in one of its earlier formations), then goes into a wonderful St. Stephen and The Eleven which is just wonderful - I'm especially fond of the ending jam in the Eleven - before going into a song which never should have left, Death Don't Have No Mercy.. The second set follows and while perhaps not as strong as the first, the Cryptical and the Other One features some great work by Phil, which is also noticeable in the New Potato Caboose (as sadly the lack of keyboards). The show ends with some intense and jamming and, the then popular Feedback.. Grateful Dead Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco CA 8/12/68 - Saturday Set 1 Dark Star ->Saint Stephen ->The Eleven ->Death Don't Have No Mercy Set 2Cryptical Envelopment ->Drums ->The Other One ->Cryptical Envelopment ->New Potato Caboose ->Jam ->Drums ->Jam -> Feedback You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102414.mp3 May your week be filled with kindness and enlightenment. My most sincere thanks for your generous support of the Deadpod!
As we prepare to turn the page on March, I thought it might be nice to pull out a really smoking show from way back in 1969.. this one comes to us from 3/28/69 at the Modest Jr. College Civic Center in Modesto California.. yes a unique venue..but quite a strong outing for the boys. This one starts out with a strong Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, but follows that up with a deep space Dark Star... Jerry has some wonderful leads in this one, and it threads its way through chaos and eternity into a rousing Saint Stephen... The Eleven is always a thrill to me and this has some extended build ups.. The Death Don't Have No Mercy is powerful.. as usual.. a classic 23 minute Lovelight follows, with Pigpen leading the charge. The second set consists of one long 'The Other One'.. its a high energy jam that is abruptly stopped when someone turns on the house lights and ends the show! I hope you enjoy this one my friends.. Grateful Dead Student Center, Modesto Jr. College, Modesto CA, 3/28/69 Good Mornin' Little Schoolgirl Dark Star-> St. Stephen-> The Eleven-> Death Don't Have No Mercy-> Turn On Your Lovelight Cryptical Envelopment-> Drumz-> The Other One-> Cryptical Envelopment You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032913.mp3 For my Christian friends Happy Easter... High time for some classic '68 Dead.. this week's show contains a wonderful classic Dark Star from 1968.. its from 'Betty Nelson's Organic Raspberry Farm' in Sultan WA., and took place on September 2nd, 1968. While the tape does have its share of rough spots it really is a quite spectacular record of the band as it is nearing maturity.. the incredible Pigpen vocals on 'Alligator' are another highlight..
