A distinctive figure in the New Zealand musical landscape, Delaney Davidson has dropped yet another album. Out of My Head has a more theatrical feel, co-producer Mark Perkins' synth atmospheres creating a cinematic soundscape for the twelve-track album. The album is filled with songs written over the global pandemic lockdown period, with notable guest appearances from Marlon Williams and Reb Fountain. Despite the circumstances in which they were written, music reviewer Estelle Clifford told Jack Tame that there's a kind of freedom and joy to a lot of the tunes. “I love it,” she said, giving the album a 10/10. We go track by track on Canadian-born New Zealand feminist trouble maker and country music superstar, Tami Neilson's 5th album, Kingmaker. Recorded at Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios, the songs of Kingmaker expose industry systems, exploding patriarchal structures of the industry, society, and family. It's definitely not new territory for Tami, her previous two albums called attention to misogyny and patriarchal structures. Tami digs into these themes with sophistication, grace, emotion and humor. The way she brings these important messages to life hits you hard, but you can also dance to it.This is Tami's second appearance on the podcast (she was first on episode 79). Definitely check out our first conversation as we talk about her life in her family band, move to New Zealand and her relationship to fashion and appearance. She also talked about experiencing the death of her father, the musician Ron Neilson. He appears on Kingmaker in several forms. For instance, on the song “Beyond the Stars,” written with Delaney Davidson, she sings about the loss of her father and the longing to be with him again, with the legendary Willie Nelson singing the part of Tami's dad. Tami's one in a million! Enjoy this conversation and her brilliant new album, Kingmaker.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Having moved to Joshua Tree after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, husband-and-wife duo Maryrose and Brian Crook are back on home soil for a string of shows with their swirling psychedelic-rock act The Renderers. The five-date tour marks the pair's first proper New Zealand shows in 10 years and sees them joined by Lyttelton-based musicians Joe McCallum (Nadia Reid, Delaney Davidson) on drums and Anita Clark (Motte) on violin and vocals. The pair's visit to Aotearoa has also included a Christchurch exhibition of large-scale paintings by Maryrose that draw on traditions of surrealism, still life and folk art.

Postcards... Instagram and other social media may have overtaken them as the favourite way to show people where you've been, but there's still something terribly evocative about the word. Auckland Festival of Photography is using it for a YouTube channel series called Postcards from New Zealand that features work by photographers from around the country. One of the latest additions is the winner of the first Auckland UNESCO City of Music Aotearoa Music Photography Award, Veronica McLaughlin. Her winning image was a colour photo of Delaney Davidson performing at The Wine Cellar on K Road. As well as her work as a photographer, Veronica's also the co-owner and publisher of the entertainment website The 13th Floor with Marty Duda. But, as she tells Lynn Freeman, her first professional music gig was an Elvis Costello concert at the Civic in 2013.

Kimberly Morgan was attracted to Christopher Duntsch from the moment she met him. He was charming and seemed destined for great things. But she also saw another side to him. Chris Duntsch was a promising medical student, with a bright future ahead of him. The friends who knew him were shocked at the doctor he would later become. Not Chris, they said. Marlon Williams is a 27-year-old singer from New Zealand whose latest album, Make Way for Love, came out earlier this year. He’s well known in his home country for his work with a band called The Unfaithful Ways, and his Secret History of Country Music Songwriting series with Delaney Davidson. In America, you might know his song, “Dark Child,” written by his friend Tim Moore. It’s a positively chilling song, and it was used quite effectively on the end of the first episode of the Netflix series Wild Wild Country. He’s also well known in his country for his romance with singer Aldous Harding, a singer who he’s no longer dating, but who he nevertheless invited to sing on a song he wrote about their breakup. But it all began for Marlon Williams when he joined the choir at about age 10.
Nick Bollinger reports on the latest recordings of itinerant songster Delaney Davidson.
Delaney Davidson joins us to share the songs that have inspired him and his wonderful Magical Lightbox performance that combines music and film.
