When virtuosity, intuition and pure soul meet, the results are magical. And that kind of magic — steeped in the sounds, tradition and spirit of Memphis — is (Brother) Paul Brown's specialty. The GRAMMY® Winning Nashville, Tennessee-based musician, songwriter and producer is a roots world MVP, but his abilities truly extend beyond any genre to encompass his vision. That's abundantly clear when Brown's behind the keyboard. Whether on stage or in the studio, his signature approach and passionate energy are both unmistakable. In addition to the gliding melodies, elongated textures and churning chords, Brown displays a stunning, highly original vocabulary on the instrument — enhancing and reflecting the vocal performances of compelling singers like Rush, Peebles, Deborah Bonham and Mighty Sam McClean with voice-like effects — hums, stutters, exclamations, lines that trail off like sentences. It's that musical conversation he alludes to, in a very literal sense. And the world is listening. Brown's accolades include a 2020 GRAMMY® Win for his keyboard work on Gloria Gaynor's GRAMMY® winning Gospel album Testimony following his 2014 GRAMMY® Nomination for “Best Soul Blues Album" for producing, engineering and mixing Bobby Rush's Down In Louisiana and the 2012 Blues Music Award for “Best Soul Blues Album of the Year” for the same duties on Bobby Rush's Show You a Good Time both at his own Ocean Soul Studios. That same year he won the Jackson (Mississippi) Music Award for “Best International Producer of the Year. What's striking about Brown besides his stellar musical abilities is his attitude. He is perpetually upbeat and strikingly un-jaded. “That's just my personality,” he explains. “I've played on some of the world's biggest stages and I've gone without food for days, but I've always loved every minute that I'm making music.”MAN, WHAT I FIND EVEN MORE STRIKING IS THAT I GREW UP LISTENING TO AND LOVING GROUPS LIKE KISS, AEROSMITH AND BLACK SABBATH. THEN SOMEWHERE ALONG MY CRAZY MUSICAL JOURNEY, I FELL INTO THE WORLD OF STUDIO PRODUCTION, MAKING SOUL, BLUES AND GOSPEL ALBUMS - AND ENDED UP WITH A GRAMMY® NOMINATED BLUES ALBUM FOLLOWED BY THIS RECENT GRAMMY® WIN IN THE ROOTS GOSPEL CATEGORY! JUST CRAZY! His resume embraces stage, television and session work across the U.S. and Europe with the Waterboys, Mike Farris, Whitesnake's Reb Beach, Derek St. Holmes, Al Green, Deborah Bonham, George Clinton, Lynyrd Skynyrd's Rickey Medlocke, Hi Records Alumni Don Bryant, the Mother Station, Otis Clay, Bettye LaVette, the Bar-Kays, Isaac Hayes and many others. “I feel like I'm at a wonderful place in my life musically,” Brown declares. “I'm getting to do all of the styles of music I want to do. That stretches from a beautiful New Age to Rock, Soul, Acid Blues, Jazz and Americana. "I'M AT THE TOP OF MY GAME CREATIVELY, AND I'M HAVING A BALL. AND THAT'S ALL BECAUSE I BELIEVE IN DOING THINGS FOR THE RIGHT REASONS AND AVOIDING ANYTHING SUPERFICIAL. FOR ME, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC AND ALL ABOUT HEART AND SOUL.” Follow Brother Paul:www.yamahasynth.com/bro-paul-brownwww.facebook.com/paul.brown.9212301www.linkedin.com/in/paul-brown-aa92537https://twitter.com/PAULBROWNAP63 ****SUBSCRIBE/RATE/FOLLOW What's Your Problem? Rock stars live a life most of us normal people could only dream of. Expensive houses, fast cars, adoration of millions of fans, big game hunting, political rallies… wait, what? Ted Nugent has been slinging platinum albums for over 40 years, but he doesn't fit the mold of the usual shredding guitar-playing front man. At this point in his life, his political views and public outbursts have him in the news more than his music does. Do we respect Ted for speaking his mind, regardless of what others may think? Or is he entering the “get off my lawn” period of his life? We'll dive into this and much more on this rockin' episode of AHC Podcast. I’ve been busy with https://www.roadmapwriters.com/ (Roadmap Writers) stuff (pitching), my own writing (short film and new TV pilot), and the podcast. I’m ready to start really focusing on growth with this project. So although episodes are written, I may not publish new podcasts for the story for a while. It’s hard to balance the art and the other stuff. I’m an artist; the other stuff sucks me dry, but I need to focus on the other stuff for a little while. For starters: please go to http://ofmusicandmen.com/audience-survey (ofmusicandmen.com/audience-survey). I just finished a short film (excited): It was an honor to cast and work with two phenomenal Latinx actors, and tell a story with and through them that didn’t focus on trauma or stereotypical narratives we see about people from their native countries: Mexico and Cuba. Heroes aren’t born; they are made. Inspired by the work and story of https://www.ocasiocortez.com (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) and the storytelling style of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alejandro_González_Iñárritu (Alejandro González Iñárritu), this story is a journey of a young educated woman, filled with cynicism about her America. But we experience her transition from insecure skeptic... to confident candidate. I hope this will inspire people of all races and backgrounds to be the heroes they want to see. We’ve moved to https://www.captivate.fm/ (Captivate) (for podcast hosting). We’re excited to work with Captivate because of their commitment to growth, their beautiful platform, and the flexibility. OM&M questions I’ve changed the numbering for the podcast? Why? Books/TV episodes are considered seasons in podcast feeds now. https://ofmusicandmen.captivate.fm/ (Episode 3) is inspired by my love of sports, especially football. All of the motivational quotes were from famous athletes and coaches, and the storylines for each section used sports jargon to help move it along. Was Kenneth Gold inspired by a real person? Episode 3.3: Fourth and Long https://www.paulcbrunson.com/ (Paul Carrick Brunson) and https://www.davidwygant.com/ (David Wygant) (who inspired WIll Smith’s Hitch). Are there music signatures for characters? I unconsciously went into this with signatures or sounds for all of them, but it actually became more clear with each character’s appearance and arch. Kenya is Ambient/Urban, which can sound like a blend of Pop, Hip Hop, and R&B, (Top 40) but at the same time, it may not be definitively any of those. The kind of music you might hear any of your favorite popular artists on. J is definitely more of a social girl, so you might hear more EDM, House, and electronic music, usually something with high energy Ty is Jazz and R&B. She actually is a fan of Classical too but I use Classical music with the cold opening, so I don’t usually use it again within the episodes. But she’s a big fan of the opera so it wouldn’t be out of the question to use it during some of her scenes. Tk is a Hip Hop artist so hers is the easiest. The same with Lucas, who’s a singer-songwriter, so his sound is more acoustic and soft Rock. Derek St. Cyr (aka Dream Guy) has a signature song (not sound because we won’t ever tell the story through the eyes of the men. They are there to support the women so no matter how important they are, we only see them through the eyes of Kenya, Ty or J). But his signature song is a Dubstep song, mostly because that glitchy sound is a way of musically describing how Kenya feels when she sees him. To see their visual styles and fashion, go to Pinterest.com/ofmusicandmen. It’s so cool. We have virtual closets for all of the characters, so you can get a clear idea of what they dress like. Make sure to follow OM&M everywhere online @ofmusicandmen, don’t forget to take the survey, which is linked up here in your show notes. My goal is to continue to give you updates, answer your questions, and generally stay connected as I try to build around... Support this podcast

We're back this week to tackle the who, what, when, where and why of the second half of our 1981 Year in Review Part 2! July of 1981 is a strong month for the rock genre. Strong efforts include releases by Foreigner, Def Leppard, and the Ramones. Additionally, some great under the radar albums by Demon and New England help bolster and already solid month. The month of August is a busy one in news and pop culture. The launch of MTV on August 1st is a landmark moment that's about to turn the music world on its head. Also taking place in August of 1981, John Lennon assassin Mark David Chapman is sentenced. Furthermore, a fantastic musical release by Brad Whitford and Derek St. Holmes is getting attention. 1981 Year in Review Part 2 September of 1981 is filled with great rock music as well as a shocking personnel change. The month is marked with solid outings by Triumph, Grand Funk Railroad, Michael Schenker Group, KIX, and Alice Cooper. Additionally, Iron Maiden do the unthinkable and switch lead singers right as the band is beginning its ascent. The music news for October of 1981 includes a young Prince being boo'd off the stage while opening for the Rolling Stones. Also, music piracy is on the radar as the "Home Taping is Killing Music" campaign is launched. Music releases for October include new solo material from Ozzy Osbourne as well as a big release from his previous band, Black Sabbath. Notably, KISS venture into uncharted waters with a new look and a strange concept album. Hollywood death gripped the United States in November of 1981. Famed actress Natalie Wood tragically drowns while on a boat ride with two other notable thespians. Mystery continues to surround the case. Also of note, porn star John Holmes is arrested, and later acquitted, in the Laurel Canyon "Wonderland" murders. Additionally, November of 1981 is highlighted by big releases from Motley Crue and AC/DC. All of this is covered this week as well as classic commercials in our 1981 Year in Review Part 2! Brad Whitford has been in Aerosmith for 45 years, except for a short break in 1981 when he released an album with then ex-Ted Nugent guitarist Derek St. Holmes. Thirty-five years later, they're back with a great new album, Reunion, and just kicked off a national tour that runs through the summer. It's been tweeted, rumored, confirmed and discussed, but what does the hiring of Mike Zadick and Derek St. John mean for Virginia Tech wrestling and the Southeast Regional Training Center? Find out on Episode 19 of Inside Virginia Tech Wrestling as host Jason Bryant talks with head coach Kevin Dresser, St. John and Zadick about their roles around the program. Before we talk with St. John and Zadick, Coach Dresser breaks down some of the news from the summer, mostly from the NWCA Convention held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in early August. Among the topics were athlete retention, scheduling, moving wrestling to one semester and of course, the National Duals. We then get to St. John, a four-time All-American and an NCAA champion at Iowa who recently finished up coaching one season at North Dakota State University. Zadick, a 2008 Olympian and 2006 World silver medalist in freestyle, has been coaching back in his native Montana recently and got the itch again to coach at the college level. New Jersey native Taylor Walsh has moved up a weight class each of the last two years and the move been a detriment to his wrestling talents. As a sophomore at 149 pounds, Walsh struggled with weight and wasn't the prolific pinner, at least not yet.In 2013-14, Walsh went on a pin streak that got the nation talking about him at 157 pounds. He was second at the Midlands to Iowa's Derek St. John. In 2014-15, Walsh moved up to 165 pounds. He finally won the Midlands, pinning All-American Pierce Harger in the finals. On Episode 132 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast presented by FlipsWrestling, Walsh talks about his foundation in wrestling with all the pinning combinations and his low-risk, high-reward style that's given wrestling fans in Bloomington something to watch.Walsh explains the development of the style, why he started to run with it in college, working with assistant coach Nick Simmons and having the opportunity to wrestle at the same tournament as his younger brother Chad, who wrestles at Rider. We also settle the discussion as to what it's actually called -- Pork Roll or Taylor Ham!Short Time will also present a new listener feedback featured called Sound Off. A guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, he is meticulous, whether it is perfecting a guitar riff or working on a lyric. But then again, its always been that way. Ever since he first saw The Beatles on television, Deziel has been involved in music, whether playing, writing or admiring. He grew to love vocal harmonies and layered guitars, and used them in his own compositions as well as those he has written with other artists. In 1991, Deziel met Jeff Carlisi of .38 Special through a meeting arranged by a friend. After that initial meeting, Carlisi became Deziel's mentor, and Deziel began sending him tapes of his own compositions to critique and judge. Carlisi would respond by phone or by mail with his compliments and comments. This is something that to this day Deziel claims to be an invaluable asset to his work. However, Deziel doesn't do everything solo. In 1993, Deziel founded the Connecticut band Sundance. As a guitarist/vocalist, he is one of the principal songwriters in the band. Sundance released its first full-length album, "Pearls of Wisdom" in November 1995. The band was a popular draw throughout the Northeast, and could be heard on many radio stations. With the group Deziel was also the subject of a television special called "Behind the Scenes With Sundance". Tony also collaborated with longtime friend Jason Elledge on Blackfoot’s 1994 Rhino Records compliation “Rattlesnake Rock ‘n Roll, the Best of Blackfoot”, featuring one of Tony’s all-time favorite guitarists; Rickey Medlocke. Currently Tony is working on a new studio album scheduled for Fall 2005 release, as well as 2 CD Singles to be released in the Summer of 2005, and has recently had the privilege to play with longtime friend and former .38 Special guitarist Jeff Carlisi, former Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Ed King, drummer Liberty DeVito of Billy Joel’s band, and vocalist/guitarist Derek St. Holmes, formerly of Ted Nugent.
