Happy New Year! ... but this NYE set by the Dead should put you in the mood to say goodbye to 2024 and to ring in a brand new 2025... This show occurred at an important turning point for the Dead, as they moved forward with many 'new' tunes and with Keith and Donna as members of the band (Donna makes her vocal debut here on 'One More Saturday Night'). The sound on this FM broadcast is generally very good and the band is tight. The boys play here with a great youthful enthusiasm.. They open with 'Dancin' In the Streets' which they wouldn't play again until June of 76.. This is a long and fun first set, clocking in at over 90 minutes.. Pig has some great moments here - Mr. Charlie, Chinatown Shuffle and Next Time You See Me are great.. All in all a great first set, we'll hear set 2 next week.. What a tale I have for you today! In 1518, a very peculiar form of madness fell over the people of the city of Strasbourg (modern day France) in the Holy Roman Empire. People started... dancing. A lot of people. As in hundreds. And out in public in full view of anyone who wanted to watch! And many of them only stopped when they died. They literally danced themselves to death. What happened and why??? For Merch and everything else Bad Magic related, head to: https://www.badmagicproductions.com
The financial sector anticipates changes due to recent political developments. Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, expresses optimism about the banking sector after Donald Trump's victory. Dimon notes that bankers celebrate the potential for reduced regulations, which they believe could enhance credit availability. He asserts that various industries seek regulatory adjustments to aid business while maintaining safety and environmental standards. Analysts predict that Trump's administration will implement less stringent bank oversight, possibly lowering operational costs. Dimon decides against joining Trump's administration, citing his preference for independence. Trump appoints Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to establish a new Department focused on cutting government spending and regulations, with a deadline of July 4, 2026.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/ Hosted on Acast. This week we feature the second set from the performance on June 22, 1976 near Philadelphia PA. Again, an unusual opener, with a jazzy 'Playin' going into an intense 'Space Jam' - this one featuring the 'Happiness is Drumming' themes that later developed into 'Fire on the Mountain'. 'The Wheel' follows, with its own spacy elements, including some great Phil riffs, before going back into the 'Playin' reprise. The 'Samson' is strong, and the 'Eyes' pretty speedy for this period. The remainder of the show features some nice rocking - 'Dancin', 'Around and Around' and a great 'Goin' Down the Road' into 'Saturday Night'.. Grateful Dead Tower Theatre Upper Darby, PA 6/22/1976 - Tuesday Two Playing In The Band [8:55] (2) > Space Jam [14:07] > Drums [2:30] (3) > The Wheel [5:16] (4) > Playing In The Band Reprise [2:58] (5) [2:00] Samson And Delilah [6:51] (6) % Eyes Of The World [12:26] > Dancing In The Street [12:07] Around And Around [6:58] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [8:15] > One More Saturday Night [4:37] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod062323.mp3 Thanks for your kind support!

Madonna is getting “Into The Groove”, whilst on “Holiday!”, she's such a “Material Girl”. But if like Huey Lewis And The News, you know “The Power Of Love”, you “Don't Stop The Dance”, as Bryan Ferry puts it now, do you? Before long you'll all be “Dancing In The Street” with Jagger and Bowie and then to top it off going all “Tarzan Boy” with Baltimora, and all the while The Cure are asking you to get "Close To Me". While we are on the subject, "I Can Dream About You", if I want. Dan Hartman said it was OK with my "Body and Soul" as long as I tell Mai Tai. Oo 'er, what would we get up to "I Wonder If I Take You Home", eh Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam? I would certainly make your "Body Rock", wouldn't I Maria Vidal? Stop "Holding Out For A Hero" Bonnie Tyler, cos "We Don't Need Another Hero", do we Tina Turner? I got your back though, like UB40 and Chrissie Hynde "I Got You Babe". I mean I can do this all day long, "Money For Nothing" like Dire Straits, so you better do as Princess says and "Say I'm Your Number 1" or else! I certainly won't be driving you home otherwise, you can ask The Cars if they'll "Drive", but if you ask me, you'll be on foot with Kate Bush "Running Up That Hill". So there! Enjoy. While I played this show, unbeknownst to me, ten years ago on the Deadpod, I am still going to present the wonderful second set this week. This show, from Indianapolis on October 1, 1976, features a sweet second set. While a 'Might As Well' opener might not signal such a beauty, the 'Samson' that follows quickly convinces that we are in a for a treat. Great interplay throughout from Jerry and Phil. When the 'Help>Slip>Frank' that follows gets rolling the band hits on all cylinders. I especially love Keith's contribution in the great 'Slipknot!' jam here. A somewhat short 'Dancin' goes into an even shorter 'drums' but 'The Wheel' that follows is sweet. Following 'Ship of Fools', Bobby attempts to go back into 'Dancin' in a very unusual jam, but the boys move into a 'Goin' Down the Road' into 'Saturday Night' to end the set. Grateful Dead Market Square Arena Indianapolis, IN 10/1/1976 - Friday Two Might As Well [5:37] ; Samson And Delilah [7:13] % Help On The Way [4:07] > Slipknot! This week's Deadpod features the continuation of the band's performance at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco on July 13, 1976. There are issues with the tape on 'Music Never Stopped' but this clears up quickly so please be patient. 'It Must Have Been the Roses' follows, then 'Samson' but the highlight here is a beautiful version of 'High Time'. After some pause, they go into 'Saint Stephen' into 'Not Fade Away' , quite interesting at times..they then move into 'Sugar Magnolia' and you think that this must be the end of the set, but Jerry comes back with a stunning 'Stella Blue'. They do the 'Sugar Mag' reprise, but then return for a pretty outrageous encore - a long and funky 'Dancin' In the Streets'.. Musical greatness finds unexpected substance and social context, a young band nails it, and a mighty band falls. Dancing in the Streets, originally by Martha and the Vandellas, covered by Carpenters, and by The Who. Outro music is My Size by John Entwistle.
This week the Deadpod continues with the second set from January 13, 1978 at the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara California. This was a 'Stop Nuclear Power' benefit and as usual at these kind of events, I think the band was charged up for it and I think it shows in the energy of this great second set. They start off with a rousing 'Bertha' into 'Good Lovin'. Donna follows with a nice version of 'Sunrise' then they go into a long and interesting 'Dancin' In the Streets' highlighted with some dueling riffs by Jerry and Phil. The 'Drums' that follows is particularly intense and uptempo. Jerry then goes into a long 'Wharf Rat' which at the end builds to another peak as it leads into an unusual 'Truckin', then again to a very uptempo 'Around and Around' to finish the set. Another change of pace follows with a 'Sugar Magnolia' encore. Grateful Dead Arlington Theatre Santa Barbara, CA 1/13/78 - Friday Two Bertha [6:35] > Good Lovin' [5:51] ; Sunrise [7:21]; Dancing In The Street [16:58] > Drums [3:56] > Jam [13:51] > Wharf Rat [12:02?] > Truckin' [9:23] > Around And Around [8:23] Encore Sugar Magnolia [9:47] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012822.mp3 Hope you are all well as we 'wave to the wind' and leave January behind!

This week's second set from Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City NJ, is one of the best of that year, in my opinion. It starts out with a smokin' Help>Slip>Frank, the Slipknot here is particularly great. A wonderful summertime 'Dancing In the Street' follows, then 'The Wheel', and 'Samson'.. again Phil is way up in the mix and I only wish I could hear him so well more often.. 'Roses' follows, with the '76 tempo.. personally I wish Donna was a bit farther up in the mix here. The rest of the set is classic Dead, starting off with a rockin' 'Not Fade Away' into Drums, then a wonderful, exploratory jam leading into the 'Other One'. This one knocks my socks off. Ship of Fools and Sugar Mag close the set with a Johnny B. Goode encore. Grateful Dead Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City, NJ 8/4/76 - Wednesday Two Help On The Way [6:20] > Slipknot! Welcome home. And welcome back to The Music Museum. This exhibit is called The Vietnam War: The Music. Our mission here at the Music Museum is to support all Vietnam Veterans and those who serve the United States, then and now. We thank you for your service. This project started with a story I saw on TV in 2018, a story about a soldier, a 23-year-old Army helicopter sniper, who served in the Vietnam War. Before Christmas 1970, he received a Christmas card from a sixth-grader he didn't know. It had a simple message: "Thank you." He said it helped him get through the war. Over the years, he prized the letter and wondered what happened to the little girl who wrote it. That got me thinking about a letter that I received in 1968 from a soldier serving in Vietnam. I was a disc jockey in Manchester NH playing the hits every night. In July of that year, I got a letter from the soldier requesting that I play three songs dedicated to his girlfriend who was attending college in the area. I played the songs, and that was that. Scot and Jeff discuss the second part of David Bowie's career (1974–1981) with Damon Linker. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Damon Linker, Senior Columnist for The Week. Read Damon's work here and follow him at @DamonLinker on Twitter. Damon's Music Pick: David Bowie It's not the side effects of the cocaine, Political Beats is thinking that it must be love as it throws itself into the whirlpool of David Bowie's latter-Seventies career, taking our journey all the way up through Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) and one of the greatest one-off artistic collaborations between two musical giants during the rock era (hint: it's not “Dancing In The Street”). David Bowie was an artistic giant all the way through his entire recording career, and was making stirring music up until the day he passed away — that will be addressed in our upcoming third part of this retrospective — but Jeff for one makes no secret of the fact that this era is his favorite by far. From songs about the lives of young Americans, girlfriend-eating television sets, new careers in new towns, and being heroes just for one day, to swingin' along to the good life as a boy, sailing to the piratey hinterlands, or being hunted down like just another piece of teenage wildlife . . . this is the era where David Bowie traveled a vast yawning gap of artistic growth and transcendence. This is the sound of greatness.
This week brought us a special salute and tribute to the iconic superstar and legend that is David Bowie.Featuring a wealth of album cuts, single cuts and more from 1967 onwards – this is a retrospective and personal look back from DJ Mitz and submissions from fellow station DJ’s. However you may draw a love from Bowie in his musical form, this is a delivery of tunes that is from a personal perspective. We hope you enjoy it and salute Bowie on January 10th.Playlist:Part One:Fashion / You Will Set The World On Fire / Oh! Not that anybody asked but this week we are Dancing In The Street as we talk about Ziggy Stardust himself; the late and great David Bowie! David Bowie and his music have appeared in a lot of tv shows and films, but which will make our Top 3 list? So Let's Dance and try to Hang On To Yourself. Expect a french bulldog, jousting and sex panthers. This week we're exploring the whimsical world of musical collaboration. From Run DMC and Aerosmith's “Walk This Way” to David Bowie and Mick Jagger's “Dancing In The Street,” we discuss some of the good the bad, the ugly, the slightly silly and the downright ridiculous musical collusions which have taken place in pop music as well as pick our own fantasy collaborations from past and present. We also play a musical game “Who Dat Grammy Nominated Artist (That We Need To Guess),” complete with its own theme music! This week we hit the beach for a most excellent time with the band as they play the Sunday show at the Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura California on July 22, 1984. This is a fine recording of a very energetic set which I am sure you'll enjoy. We start appropriately enough, with 'Dancin' In the Streets' - a better than average version in my opinion. The boys keep rockin' with 'Bertha'. Weir brings out 'My Brother Esau' - which debuted back in '83 but wouldn't be released until 'In The Dark' in '87. A powerful 'Loser' follows, and its not an exaggeration to claim this is probably the best version of this tune this year, at least. Jerry keeps up the voltage in 'Ramble on Rose', another highlight. Bucket into the infamous 'Keep Your Day Job' follows to close the set.. I must say hearing 'Day Job' again brought a smile to my face. Grateful Dead Ventura County Fairgrounds Ventura, CA 7/22/84 - Sunday posters One Dancing In The Street [9:01] > Bertha [6:20] ; My Brother Esau [4:43] ; Loser [7:01] ; Cassidy [5:52] ; Ramble On Rose [7:27] ; Hell In A Bucket [6:20] > Keep Your Day Job [4:23] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod073120.mp3 My thanks for your kind support which keeps the Deadpod alive. This week we continue listening to the band's performance at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia PA on June 24, 1976 with a somewhat short, but quite sweet, second set. As with many great second sets, this one starts with a fine 'Help>Slip>Frank' containing an exceptional 'Slipknot!' . This fine recording, which has been available as a soundboard and an FM long before the first set, continues with a smoking 'Samson and Delilah', then a beautiful 'Wharf Rat', certainly one of the best of the year. A nice jam out of Wharf Rat then goes into an exceptional 'Dancin' In the Streets'. No Drums or Space on this set, they close with a very nice 'Sugar Magnolia'. No encore at this one.. Grateful Dead Tower Theatre Upper Darby, PA 6/24/76 - Thursday Two Help On The Way [4:10] > Slipknot! [9:50] > Franklin's Tower [9:42] > Samson And Delilah [5:55] ; Wharf Rat [8:59] > Jam [2:07] > Dancing In The Street [12:57];[0:10] ; Sugar Magnolia [8:47] (1) You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod061220.mp3 I hope you enjoy this fine performance - thanks so much for listening and for your kind support!
Following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, D.C. has been gripped in protest for five days straight. As demonstrations intensify, local food businesses downtown have been broken into and burned. This isn't the first time Washingtonians have protested the loss of black life, and it's not the first time restaurants have witnessed it. Ruth and Patrick revisit a conversation with Virginia Ali, who cofounded Ben's Chili Bowl and witnessed the 1968 protests that destroyed her neighborhood. Virginia Ali shares the origin story of Ben’s, why her business stayed open through the protests and how they survived the years that followed. But I saved that letter for 50 years and in 2018, I started to wonder what had happened to that soldier. I tried to locate him, but, so far, I haven’t made contact. The search however continues. In the meantime, an episode was born. Welcome To 36 from the Vault! In episode 3 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 3. Recording at the Sportatorium in Pembroke Pines, FL, on May 22, 1977. Featuring a near complete show, we hear a “Sugaree” that’s as close to perfect as you’ll ever get, a funky “Dancing In The Street,” a “Help On The Way -> Slipknot! -> Franklin’s Tower” for the ages, and a four-song jam from “Eyes Of The World -> Wharf Rat -> Terrapin Station -> Morning Dew” that sounded like a completely different band than most expected in May 1977.Steven and Rob focus on the disco-fication of 1977 Dead, the songs that fit the era best, the importance of Phil Lesh, and the reasons why the Dead seemed to thrive in out of the way places throughout the 70’s.36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. It is edited and produced by Brian Brinkman, and mastered by Matt Dwyer. All music composed by Amar Sastry, unless otherwise noted. Logo design by Liz Bee Art & Design. The executive producer of 36 from the Vault is RJ Bee. Please consider reviewing this podcast on Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. We invite you to listen to Dick’s Picks Vol. 4 in anticipation of our next episode on February 26. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Here is the second set from the Grateful Dead's performance on Wednesday, May 17, 1978 at the Uptown Theater in Chicago Illinois. I love this recording, and the performance ain't half bad either ;) espcially the Dancin' In The Streets.. The Drums/Space is unusually long for this period but it is fun and contains some unexpected moments from Phil and Donna. Terrapin and Not Fade Away in particular return to the characteristic '78 sound that was a little slower and more twangy as it were, but a pleasure to listen to. Of coursea Werewolves encore ain't half bad either :) Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL 5/17/78 - Wednesday Two Samson And Delilah [7:05] ; Friend Of The Devil [8:44] ; Dancing In The Street [14:35] > Drums [18:16] > Space [1:48] > Terrapin Station [10:54] ; Not Fade Away [13:53] ; Around And Around [8:56] Encore Werewolves Of London [7:06] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod060719.mp3 Stay tuned for some cool information regarding this new anniversary release and your chance to win!

The Motown legend behind "Dancing in the Street," "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," "It Takes Two," "Devil with a Blue Dress On," and "Beechwood 4-5789" opens up about his life and career. EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE Scott and Paul talk about Pearl Snap Studios, their new rock star Patreon subscriber, Motown's 60th anniversary, and that lost Marvin Gaye album. PART TWO - 12:43 mark Scott heads over to Mickey’s house to get the lowdown on why he almost stormed out of his first meeting with Berry Gordy; how he assembled Motown’s legendary Funk Brothers; the trick he used to convince Marvin Gaye to ditch jazz and become an R&B singer; why “Dancing in the Street” was a message song -- but not the message many people think; the pep talk he would give to Motown’s artists and songwriters; the reason he’d have to kick a young Stevie Wonder out of the studio; why he’s a champion of songwriting collaborations over writing solo; and the real reason he departed Motown. ABOUT MICKEY STEVENSON William “Mickey” Stevenson was hired as Motown Records’ first A&R Director, signing a variety of artists to the label including The Four Tops and Stevie Wonder. He assembled the legendary Motown studio band known as the Funk Brothers and produced such Motown classics as “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” and “Uptight (Everything is Alright).” As a songwriter, Stevenson partnered with Marvin Gaye to write The Marvelettes' hit “Beechwood 4-5789,” as well as Gaye’s own hit recordings of “Stubborn Kind of Fellow,” “Hitch Hike,” and “Pride and Joy.” Mickey is perhaps best known as the co-writer of “Dancing in the Street,” a massive hit for his former assistant, Martha Reeves, that was written with Gaye and Ivy Jo Hunter. The song was inducted into the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry and the Grammy Hall of Fame. Additional hits from the pen of Mickey Stevenson include “Devil with a Blue Dress On” for Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, “Ask the Lonely” for The Four Tops, “Nothing’s Too Good for My Baby” for Stevie Wonder, “It Take Two” for Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston, and “It Should Have Been Me” for Gladys Knight and the Pips. The long list of artists who’ve recorded Mickey’s songs includes Diana Ross, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Little Richard, The Jackson 5, The Everly Brothers, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Rod Stewart, Phil Collins, Tina Turner, Dusty Springfield, The Kinks, Van Halen, David Bowie, Mike Jagger, The Rolling Stones, and many others.
We all craved a clear resolution after special counsel Robert Mueller submitted his report to Attorney General William Barr over the weekend. No such luck: We are left untangling what the combination of "no collusion" and "no obstruction" actually means, and the jury's out on obstruction of justice. Nonetheless, Trump has turned the result into an inevitable victory lap, with characteristic Trumpian vengeance. Speaking in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump said he had been victimized by Mueller's investigation, and, ominously, he'd be taking "a look" at those he deemed responsible. So, where are we right now? Put simply, we are in a kind of political wilderness, without a roadmap, or an actual report to read, and lots of unanswered questions. In the podcast studio with host Jamilah King this week, David Corn, Washington, DC, Bureau Chief, and national security and foreign influence reporter, Dan Friedman help sort things out in the post-Mueller investigation world.

Happy Winter Solstice! and of course Merry Christmas.......... While this is the last Deadpod before the holiday, I will naturally include some great acoustic Dead music for your enjoyment. However since it is also a few days before the holiday, I thought I would break with tradition a bit and include some electric Dead as well. The show I selected for this week really dictated this choice, its a fine show that was performed back on April 3rd, 1970 at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati Ohio. I bring you part one this week. Unlike most acoustic sets, this show features an acoustic set right smack in the middle.. so rather than try to rearrange the songs I thought I would bring you the first part this week and finish up next Friday night. Some of the highlights here include a great jam in 'China Cat'>'I Know You Rider' , Pigpen on 'Hard to Handle' and Katie Mae', and the first ever preformance of 'Candyman' . Don't miss the alternative lyrics on a nice acoustic 'Friend of the Devil'. Grateful Dead Field House - University of Cincinnati Cincinnati, OH 4/3/70 - Friday One - 2:07:30 Casey Jones [#3:45];[0:34] ; China Cat Sunflower [3:04] > Jam [1:40] > I Know You Rider [4:04];[0:36] ; Hard To Handle [4:58];[0:40] ; Dancing In The Street [10:04];[0:28] ; Me And My Uncle [2:57];[0:38] % Friend Of The Devil [3:42];[0:38] ; Deep Elem Blues [5:16] [0:33]%[0:10] ; Candyman [5:01];[0:19] ; Wake Up Little Susie [2:17] > Black Peter [7:20] > Uncle John's Band [6:15] ; Intro (1) [2:52] ; Katie Mae [3:51];[0:13] % You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122118.mp3 I wish you and yours a peaceful, joyous holiday. thank you for your support
La victoria de Francia. ¿Ganó Africa? Melting pot versus identidad nacional.
A wonderful second set to celebrate the start of the Days Between on this week's Deadpod from 6/11/76 Boston Music Hall. What a way to open a set! St. Stephen! They step it up even more by following that with a unique jam into 'Dancing In the Streets' into 'The Music never Stopped.. As you might notice there is no real drums or space in this second set, but an abundance of great tunes and fine playing.. Grateful Dead Boston Music Hall Boston, MA 6/11/76 - Friday Two Saint Stephen [9:34] > Dancing In The Street [12:03] > The Music Never Stopped [4:33];[1:30] ; Ship Of Fools [6:53] % Samson And Delilah [5:50] % Sugaree [9:47] % Sugar Magnolia [6:05] > Eyes Of The World [13:10] > Stella Blue [8:#36];[0:04] ; Sunshine Daydream [2:40] Encore Johnny B. This month has plenty to appeal to our apparently core demographic of single Russian women. Horrifying numbers of musical theatre directors. Mike's patchy DIY history, featuring the Lego podium and Bucket-o-foam baffle. The Chick Corea Electric Band's inverse McGherkin, and how Mick Jagger and David Bowie's "Dancing In The Street" really is that bad, even with the music. Plus, Jon curls his toes to Mike's Facepalm Motherlode and we discuss how live performers might best impress the sound man, as well as how we can solve the future of Classical Music with the Leicester Symphony Orchestra, Andre Rieu, and T-Pain's Uncle Vanya. And all this without offending Errol the Editing Chipmunk. Oh, and one final thing: Jon Whitten -- The Musical! You heard it here first... Fancy more of this nonsense? Then please support the podcast!
Marvin Gaye hat den Titel zusammen mit zwei Kollegen in den Sechzigern für das Motown-Label geschrieben. Kim Weston sollte "Dancing in the Street" singen. Vorher aber engagierte man Martha Reeves für eine Demo-Version. Und so kam es anders als geplant.
Ian and Ben go through some of the worst songs ever recorded by great bands. Also Ben previews his wrestling super weekend and the Indianapolis Sports Ball 350?
A fresh new year brought to my mind a good time to hear the band when they sounded fresh and young - - thus this week's Deadpod from 1/16/70 at Springer's Inn in Portland Oregon. This is the start of what was a momentous year for the band, and we can hear the enthusiasm and talent of each of them on this fine recording. While there are no long jams or songs on this recording, there is a passion and energy in each of these songs that is a treat to listen to. I'll play the first part of this recording this week and the second next; while there are some cuts and anomalies, I think you'll agree that it has held up its sonically remarkably well. The tempo, as in much of this period is more controlled and a little slower.. but everyone is blending in and doing a great job. They open with a nice 'Might As Well' (not yet over played :), then follow with Samson and Delilah. A terrific High Time follows - a song we don't get to hear very often. Let It Grow follows, split by a short drum segment, then a rocking Dancin' in The Streets. A real Cosmic Charlie follows, again, with a slower tempo, then the band gets everyone moving with Around and Around, Goin' Down the Road, and since it was Saturday, One More Saturday Night. They return with a great Not Fade Away encore, not the usual choice for that slot. Grateful Dead Capitol Theatre Passaic, NJ 6/19/76 - Saturday Two Might As Well [5:44];[1:28] ; Samson And Delilah [6:17];[1:36] ; High Time [9:17];[1:38] (1) ; Let It Grow [6:04] > Drums [3:24] > Let It Grow [3:03] % Dancing In The Street [10:05] > Drums [0:11] > Cosmic Charlie [7:58];[3:32] (1) ; Around And Around [6:22] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:06] > One More Saturday Night [4:16] Encore Not Fade Away You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod060917.mp3 I surely hope that this finds you well and enjoying a beautiful Summer. Thanks for listening and for your support.Â
Bill Hughes was once again confident about his choice of Essential Song. It's Martha and the Vandellas' 'Dancing In The Street'.
“Like Pacino and De Niro doing Gone Fishin’.” David Bowie and Mick Jagger dispense questionable advice, but we follow them anyway and go “Dancing In The Street!”

Here's a wonderful record of a time when there truly was noone who did anything like the Grateful Dead.. this comes to us from April 12th, 1970 at the Fillmore West. This recording combines an audience and a soundboard source and does have some flaws, but I'm confident you'll listen to it with the same amazement it brings me. Of course the fact that they played with Miles Davis on the same bill during this run must have contributed to their desire to really bring it. The show starts with a great Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, but I would bring your attention to the wonderful Garcia jam that flows between China Cat and I Know You Rider.. so sweet! I love the Pigpen numbers on this one and the electric Deep Elem and of course a great Viola Lee Blues ! On the Saturday before MOTHER'S DAY, the cool critics did a show on MOTHERS. A dedication to mothers. A week ago because B.B. King died, the Cool Critics did a show on BB King. Both of the shows are available via BlogTalk to download if you want. THIS WEEK, after having William "Mickey" Stevenson on KINGS IN THE MORNING, I was thoroughly impressed of what that man brought to MOTOWN Records. Mickey Stevenson put Motown Records on the map with his writings, with his producing, with his organization. I saw his name on records, but I never knew how valuable William "MICKEY" Stevenson was the the Motown foundation. With a great foundation like MOTOWN has become, where do you think, the Commodores, Rick James, The Jackson 5, the many many MANY artists that Berry Gordy Jr & the MOTOWN company created, exposed, manufactured and more would have been had there not been a Motown Music Empire? Today, you will hear his words, his works and learn some information on a piece of Motown. Thank you for joining us!

Old songs like old photographs are the purveyors of a kind of double imagery. They are short circuits in time that make yesterdays events, today’s reality. One such song, is "DANCING IN THE STREET" by Martha and the Vandellas. Almost a work of art, it conveys and captures an entire ethos in its 2 minutes and 36 seconds. It was recorded in the summer of l964. The beginning of the Vietnam War, and the Berkeley Free Speech Movement. It was the Mississippi Freedom Summer; we’d see the passage of the Civil Rights Bill and it was a time when serious and ironic was becoming the meme of the day. Yet this pop song would become the anthem for changing America. It’s the subject of best selling author Mark Kurlansky’s Ready For a Brand New Beat: How "Dancing in the Street" Became the Anthem for a Changing America. My conversation with Mark Kurlansky:
As promised, a summer theme. This is one song to which I don't feel any improvements are needed. The original is perfect, and only a few of the covers featured do I feel succeed in doing something new and exciting. I think the Everly Brothers and Van Halen win the cup this time. See what you think. In researching this episode, I discovered something interesting, which became the sub-theme of this episode: That both The Who and the Grateful Dead both began covering this song in a straight ahead form in each of the band's early days. Both retired the tune, only to each rework it in the late 70's. So I bookend this episode with those bands' versions. Yes, I might spend a few extra minutes on the Dead's version(s), but that's just because their musical references are so rich, that it's hard for me to resist diving in. I also wish I cut the Little Richard version a minute or two earlier--I started out loving it, but grew to dislike it after repeated listening. Otherwise, you will hear some prime examples of how music changed between the 60's and 80's. I can't really say that things have changed half as much in the last 20 years.
This is a fine second set from the Fall of 1976 - enjoy this one along with the fine Fall weather.. I especially recommend that you savor the wonderful Slipknot.. as well as the Franklin's Tower that follows.. this is really an under appreciated gem. The Dancin'->Drums->Wheel->Ship is not only unusual but very nicely done, especially the Ship of Fool.. this one makes a truly wierd but wonderful transition back into the Dancin' reprise.. There's no point in describing the GDTRFB.. listen to it.. You'll love the rockin' end to this show.. Grateful Dead - October 1, 1976 Market Square Arena - Indianapolis, IN Two: Might As Well ; Samson And Delilah Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; Dancing In The Street > Drums > The Wheel > Ship Of Fools > Dancing In The Street > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > One More Saturday Night Encore: U.S. Blues You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod101212.mp3 I hope that you might consider making a donation to support the Deadpod.. Racketeering and gyros are discussed. The title of the show is in contention and we admit our lack of technology. Do atheists believe in flags? The classic Mentos/Soda experiment. Mick Jagger and David Bowie are weird. The infallible t-shirt cannon.
This week we get to listen to the second set of the Dead's performance on 10/20/78 at Winterland in San Francisco. I don't think there's really any throw-away tunes in this set - from the opening Half-Step->Franklins, to the exploratory(!) Dancin' In the Streets this is really classic, Good 'ol Grateful Dead. The double encore, Johnny B Goode and Shakedown Street, just puts the band's own exclamation mark on this performance.. Enjoy. This week we get to hear the rest of that fine 1st set - and the entire 2nd set - from the classic performance of 5/4/77 at the Palladium in NYC., NY. The first set ends with a fine and very well played Dancin' In the Streets, but the real meat of this show is the 2nd set, in my opinion. Here we have a monsterous 45 minute Terrapin->Playin'->Comes a Time->Playin that just will blow your socks off. When the band finishes the Playin' reprise, the house lights come up and the show is over - there's nothing else they can add.. and I don't think anyone was complaining.. I think you'll agree....
