As we publish this episode in 2024, it has been 30 YEARS since 1994. THIRTY. YEARS. How did that happen? That said, 1994 was a great year for music. In the days right before the inventions of Napster and the iPod, radio, MTV, VH1, record stores, and CD clubs still had an iron grip on what most Americans listened to. It was a diverse mix of genres and artists, with dance hits, grunge bands, rap, r'n'b, alternative rock, adult-contemporary ballads, and even some folk-pop indie darlings piercing through the noise and topping the charts. Now, continuing our series of looking back at songs from 20, 30, and 40 years ago, the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to determine: what WAS the best song of 1994? Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Gary Jackson, Joelle Boedecker, and Kate Racculia they discuss 16 of the most iconic songs from 1994, narrowing them down until they make their final decision! Join us on a winding road as we soak up the sun—and the truffle oil—in this early 2000's tour de force, as Steven & Lily surprise each other with recipes they cooked straight from the text. From Sheryl's infamous authorship dispute to Steven's curious connection to Lance Armstrong, why Sheryl is the Hillary Clinton of rock, and the most apple-laden recipe of all time, this is one change that will definitely do you good.    Plus! In the VIP Lounge —Steven & Lily improvise a madcap radio play about hotel rooms, threesomes, pisco sours and adult board games. The singer-songwriter opens up about her the new Showtime documentary, ‘Sheryl,' which traces her journey from elementary school teacher to musical superstar responsible for classics like “All I Wanna Do,” “Soak Up the Sun,” and “My Favorite Mistake.” The film documents her battle against sexism, agism, and at times her own perfectionism, but ultimately it's a story about finding happiness on her own terms. Crow discusses her early years of fame, her writing process, and what it's been like to look back.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's that time of the year again, March which means that the Mardi Gras festival and party is in full swing and that means another edition of Mardi Gras party anthems. Songs that set the dance floor on fire but with  updated remixes. This 17th edition covers artists from the 80's through to the 2010's. Before I get into it, I have to give a very special thank you to Mark from Dirty Disco and Robert aka Division 4 who have once again been so generous in giving me advance access to some of their unreleased and private remixes. It means so much to me and allows these historic anthems to feature with their distinctive remix magic on every track. Having said that, the set kicks off with Wayne G's truly stunning & funky mix of Lady Gaga's "Stupid Love". For me, his is the definitive remix. Dirty Disco feature 3 outstanding remixes here for Aretha Franklin, Taylor Swift and Bonnie Pointer. The remix of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" gives me chills and makes me love Taylor Swift even more. Division 4 also features 3 stellar remixes for Madonna, Mariah Carey and The Spice Girls. I put the Minogue sisters back to back with 2 of their early, classic hits "All I Wanna Do" and "Shocked" respectively. "Shocked" is my all time favourite Kylie song and Argonaut's remix is sublime. Selena Gomez, Christina Aguilera and Kelly Clarkson all feature on this more modern spin of Mardi Gras anthems. EnjoyAnthony1/ "STUPID LOVE" (Wayne G. The Law of Creativity - To conceive, flourish and deliver - is at the core of all creative endeavors, all relationships and in fact, absolutely everything that we do. In today's episode, we look at the Art of Conceiving; the point of the creative process when energy transmutes into ideas and then implants in our consciousness. After we conceive, we can work on the ideas (flourishing) and share them with the world (delivery). For me and many other creatives, the conception state is the most exciting of the stages of creativity because it's fueled by anticipation, hope and possibility. But it's also a stage that we must get ready for; and that involves some elbow grease. By this I mean toning up the nervous system, aligning the physical body so that the channels of energy are free and clear, and nurturance of a neutral or meditative mind. If you impose your ego on this process, you will get in the way of what you can "pick up" and might just close down the process before it starts. When an idea takes root, provided that it has fertile ground in which to implant, it seems to have a life of its own and you are there to fan the flame...or water it, in this case. This podcast features the music of Jamie Liddell who recorded Another Day, Little Bit of Feel Good, and All I Wanna Do between 2005 - 2008. I discovered him on one of those "customized" playlists back in 2012 through the song "All I Wanna Do" and immediately took to his complex blending of pop and soul. You can hear his musical heroes in his music and so its fun to listen to his layered and soulful songs. When I started recording this episode, his songs magically popped into my head. They speak about some of the very things I discuss in today's podcast...so I hope that you enjoy them. You can find Jamie Lidell on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6ASGmWCYupa0CXGtsDdYSI?autoplay=true I hope you purchase my book(s) --- both available on Amazon.
