Even after the tremendous success of her cookbook, “Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat” and the Netflix series it inspired, Samin Nosrat found that she was lonely and depressed. What grounded her, and helped her claw back the joy in her life, was regularly cooking and eating with friends and committing to community – one “lazy sugo” at a time . We talk to Nosrat about her journey and her new book, “Good Things: Recipes and Rituals to Share with People You Love.” Guest: Samin Nosrat, chef and author of "Good Things: Recipes and Rituals to Share with People You Love: A Cookbook"; her previous book is the bestseller "Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat" Learn more about your ad choices. This week on Good Things with Brent Lindeque, we dive into something genuinely exciting: Discovery has become the first health insurer in the world to reward you for sleep. Yes… sleep! And I get to unpack all of it with Robert Attwell, CEO of Discovery Insure. A couple of weeks ago, I joined the Discovery team at their media launch, where they announced their brand-new sleep benefit (going live in February 2026) and handed us the Oura Ring... making us the very first South Africans to try it. I've been wearing mine for a month now and I'm obsessed. Sure, my watch tracks a lot but the ring goes deeper: sleep cycles, readiness, temperature, recovery and all our sleeping habits. In this episode, Robert and I talk about: ✨ How the Oura Ring fits into Discovery's ecosystem ✨ What the upcoming sleep benefits actually mean for South Africans ✨ Why good rest is directly linked to safer driving ✨ And how small lifestyle shifts can create massive positive change If you're curious about sleep tech, Oura, Discovery, or how to turn rest into rewards… this episode is for you. You're listening to Burnt Toast! I'm Virginia Sole-Smith. Today, my conversation is with Debra Benfield, RDN.Deb is a registered dietitian/nutritionist with 40 years of experience helping people heal their relationship with food, movement and their bodies. Her work sits at the intersection of anti-ageism, body liberation and trauma-informed care, offering a radically compassionate alternative to diet and wellness culture—especially for those in midlife and beyond. After turning 60, Deb began questioning the dominant narratives around aging, vitality and beauty, and quickly realized the majority of resources still centered weight loss and youthful appearance as the ultimate goals. In response, she created what she couldn't find: A framework for nourishing the body that honors body respect, prioritizes liberation and embraces the full spectrum of aging. Deb is the author of the beautiful new book Unapologetic Aging: How to Mend and Nourish Your Relationship with Your Body. Deb came on the podcast back in 2023 and we had what was really the first, or certainly one of the first, conversations we've had on Burnt Toast about the intersection of ageism and anti-fat bias. That discussion helped lay the foundation for how we're continuing to talk about those issues. Deb is someone I always turn to for resources and wisdom as we're navigating those conversations here. I am so thrilled to have Deb back on the podcast today, to talk about her new book, how diet culture has hijacked the menopause discourse, and why peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are actually giving you all the protein you need. Unapologetic Aging comes out on December 16, so now is the perfect time to pre-order it as a holiday gift for yourself, your mom, or anyone you know in midlife and beyond! And don't forget that if you've bought Fat Talk from Split Rock Books, you can take 10% off your purchase of Unapologetic Aging there too — just use the code FATTALK at checkout. And if you value this conversation, a paid subscription is the best way to support our work!Join Burnt Toast!

This week on Good Things with Brent Lindeque, we shine a light on the incredible work of The Pitbull Sanctuary South Africa, a haven for dogs who have survived unthinkable abuse, neglect, or abandonment. Run by animal rescuer and photographer Chantelle Van Zyl, the sanctuary is home to 37 Pit Bulls (and one tiny Yorkie) who are learning to trust, heal and start over. In this candid conversation, Chantelle opens up about the heartbreaking realities these dogs arrive with… and the extraordinary transformations that follow. It's raw, emotional and deeply inspiring... a powerful reminder of what compassion can achieve. This episode is brought to you through the Budget Insurance x Good Things Guy partnership, where we celebrate the unsung heroes you nominate. If you know someone doing incredible work, email us at info@goodthingsguy.com so we can share their story next. Good things come to good South Africans! And this sanctuary is proof!

KC and his neighborhood friends help kids learn God's Word and understand how to apply it to their every day lives through Bible stories about Jesus, Bible memory verses, object lessons and so much more! Jesus did good works that glorified God, such as healing sick people. AND a group of friends did good works by lowering a man who could not walk through the roof of a house where Jesus was teaching so that their friend could be healed. Kids learn how to bring glory to God by doing good things. Matthew 5:16, "Let your good deeds shine out for all to see." Have you ever hit a moment where joy and heartbreak showed up at the exact same time — and you weren't sure if it was self-sabotage, an upper limit, or simply life unfolding? In this episode of Empowering Her, I open up about the day my husband and I finally got our dream New York City apartment — a manifestation twenty years in the making — and just minutes later, learned of a family loss. It made me stop and ask one big question: Was this the universe testing me, or was it just life reminding me that I can hold it all? Here's what you'll hear in this week's conversation:What the Upper Limit Problem really means, inspired by The Big Leap by Gay HendricksHow to recognize when you're blocking your own expansion through fear or doubtThe difference between an upper limit and life simply happeningWhy creating unnecessary meaning around hard moments keeps you stuckHow to grow your capacity to hold both joy and grief at the same timeSimple mindset shifts to help you move beyond self-sabotage and stay open to abundanceIf you're navigating your own season of growth — one where things feel both incredible and uncertain — this episode will remind you that it's safe to expand, to receive, and to feel all of it.Let's Stay Connected! As an empowerment coach, author, twin girl mom, and the creator of the GiRLiFE Academy, my mission is to help every woman and girl discover her voice and live a life that lights her up from the inside out.I'd love to connect with you and continue this beautiful journey together!
