One of the most notorious cases Doug was involved in was that of Joshua Alan Wade, an Alaskan serial killer convicted of multiple murders. Wade's criminal history is both lengthy and disturbing. Born in 1980, Wade committed his first murder at the age of 14, shooting John Michael Martin, an unemployed schizophrenic, along a bike trail in Anchorage in 1994. Over the years, his violent tendencies escalated. In 2000, Wade brutally murdered Della Brown, an Alaska Native woman, and left her body in an abandoned shed. He continued his killing spree in 2007 by murdering his neighbor, Mindy Schloss, a nurse practitioner, after kidnapping her, robbing her, and ultimately shooting her execution-style in the back of the head. Wade's arrest followed a dramatic police pursuit and negotiation. After his girlfriend and other witnesses identified him in surveillance footage using Schloss's stolen ATM card, Wade went into hiding. When finally cornered, he held hostages at gunpoint before being persuaded to surrender by then Officer Doug Fifer. In September 2000, Shelia Toomey, a reporter for the Anchorage Daily News, wrote a front-page story about six unsolved homicides in Anchorage.  The article displayed the photos of the six victims. All were women; five were Native Alaskan, and one was African American.  Nothing connected the victims, and the police did not know if they were looking for one, two, or six murderers. Serial Killer Joshua Wade eventually admitted that he murdered Della Brown, the last murder victim profiled in Toomey's article. Investigators believed Wade might have also killed some of the other victims. The police also found the murderer of Cynthia Henry, but the murders of the other four women listed in the article remained unsolved. One of these women was Genevieve Tetpon. Police initially thought they were on the right path to solving Genevieve's murder, but they hit a dead end and had nowhere else to turn. Last week was the first part of the story of Josh Wade, the disappearance of Mindy Schloss, and the murder of Della Brown, whose beaten body had been found in a shed. In part two, after Josh's friends wore a wire, Josh Wade had an arrest warrant out and police were starting their hunt for him. This all took place 7 years before Mindy Schloss, a nurse who divided her time between Fairbanks and Anchorage, went missing from her home. When authorities, who all knew the infamous case of Della Brown, learned that Joshua Wade lived next door to Mindy, their instincts told them she had probably met a terrible fate.
