A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the rock classic (Don't Fear) The Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult (as well as some other stuff) in just under thirty minutes. The song, written and sung by lead guitarist Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser is taken from the 1976 album Agents of Fortune and explores the theme of eternal love and the inevitability of death. The band name Blue Öyster Cult features an umlaut. The 'metal umlaut' (also known as röck döts) has also been used in the names of several rock or heavy metal bands such as Queensrÿche, Motörhead, the Accüsed, Mötley Crüe, Spın̈al Tap and Green Jellÿ.The song has been featured extensively in film, TV and media: Stephen King named the song as one of the inspirations for his novel The Stand (the lyrics are quoted at the beginning of the novel). The song also appears as the opening theme for the 1994 TV serial based on the novel. The song can be heard playing in a car in the 1978 film Halloween and was used again in the 2022 sequel Halloween Ends, during the ending credits. It can be heard playing on a van radio during the 2022 horror film X and is played during the end credits of The Simpsons episode 'The Parent Rap'. The song has been featured in two series on Netflix: '1899' and 'Orange Is the New Black' and was even the subject of a Saturday Night Live comedy sketch in 2000.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Mathew Woodallhttps://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. This week on America's Podcast, we're diving into six albums that split fanbases like a badly mixed record. Love them or loathe them, these albums had fans either throwing their fists in the air or throwing their CDs out the window. First up, Queensrÿche – Hear In the Now Frontier—where prog-metal legends decided to strip things down, leaving fans wondering if they'd just wandered into the wrong album. Then, Mötley Crüe – Theater of Pain—the moment the Crüe traded in their sleazy Sunset Strip grit for glam and a whole lot of hairspray. Next, we take a ride with Judas Priest – Turbo—the album that asked, “What if metal... but synths?” and left fans turbocharged or turbo-disappointed. Then, we dive into Def Leppard – Hysteria—a glossy, arena-rock juggernaut that made some fans ecstatic and others cry “where's the riffs?!”we dive headfirst into the unexpected turn that was Kiss's The Elder. Fans were like, “What just happened?” It was a sharp left turn—from arena anthems to concept album theatrics. Buckle up, because this ride gets weird. Finally, we close with Metallica – The Black Album—the moment Metallica went from thrash titans to global rock gods, sparking endless debates about “selling out” vs. evolution. Joining us for the ride are Joseph Staub and Tim Wirasnik, ready to break down these divisive records and maybe stir up a little more controversy. Tracks Of The Week: Mooger – “I Disappear” by Metallica Joseph – “Roses On White Lace” by Alice Cooper Jerry – “Tie Your Mother Down” by Queen Tim – “Until You Suffer Some (Fire And Ice)” by Poison Marc – “When I'm Gone (Live)” by Dirty Honey Until next week, don't let music divide you. Like what you like, dislike what you like—but we can all get along, right? #AlbumWars #QueensrycheQuandary #GlamOrSham #TurbochargedOrTurboflop #HysteriaOrHeresy #BlackAlbumDebates #LetsAllGetAlong

This week on America's Podcast, we dive into the stormy seas of Savatage's The Wake of Magellan—and let's just say, the ship isn't exactly steady. One cohost faces mutiny as the others unleash their hot takes in a two-against-one battle royale. Things get salty, shade gets thrown, and at least one person forgets the golden rule of podcasting: always pick a track! Spoiler alert: feelings are hurt, egos are bruised, and the laughs get mean. #FriendshipGoals Tracks of the Week: Marc: “Della Brown” by Queensrÿche – Bringing smooth prog energy to a spicy episode. Mooger: “The Godless Endeavor” by Nevermore – Because nothing screams "friendly debate" like godlessness. Jerry: “Draw The Line” by Aerosmith – Ironically, someone definitely crosses it this week. Chris: “Why You Lie” by Through Fire – A question for the ages (and for certain cohosts).
