This week the people demanded it, and we complied! Therefore, we give you “Grave Mistake: ZEBRA Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This is our celebration of an amazing power trio from New Orleans / Long Island that has been largely forgotten in the pantheon of rock n' roll. They also happen to be very musically proficient, with a bona fide guitar god in the band that rarely gets the praise he deserves!  This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that Captain Content casually mentioned a few weeks ago and our socials lit up like a Christmas tree. While their first album went gold in the US, they have been largely forgotten in the hard rock world today. We think they should be remembered as titans of rock alongside the likes of RUSH and TRIUMPH! Songs this week include: Zebra - “Tell Me What You Want” from Zebra (1983) Zebra - “As I Said Before” from Zebra (1983) Zebra - “No Tellin' Lies” from No Tellin' Lies (1984) Zebra - “Drive Me Crazy” from No Tellin' Lies (1984) Zebra - “Better Not Call” from 3.V (1986) Zebra - “Wait Until The Summer's Gone” from Zebra Live (1990) Zebra - “K.K. 50 Years of Rush: Howard Ungerleider on Lighting the Lighted Stage

Step inside five decades of rock history with lighting legend Howard Ungerleider, the man who’s been designing and directing Rush’s light shows since 1974. Hear how a $75-a-week mailroom gig at American Talent International — where he pulled off a rogue booking of Fleetwood Mac before he was even an agent — turned into a lifetime behind the console. Get the story of Howard landing in Toronto to babysit “a club band called Rush,” sleeping on the floor at the manager’s house with a St. Bernard, freezing his hand to a car door at -40 in Cochrane, Ontario, and later jamming with Neil Peart at his house to Genesis and Supertramp records. Howard also talks designing Roll The Bones (the one Rush tour he couldn’t operate), embedding at See Factor to build custom gear nobody else could get, and how Blue Öyster Cult first put him in front of a laser: the same craft he now brings to Foo Fighters, Tool, and Janet Jackson. Then the conversation turns to the upcoming Rush Fifty Something tour — a four-piece now with Anika Nilles on drums and Loren Gold on keys, freeing Geddy to focus on bass and vocals. Learn why Howard still “plays” the lighting console live with two boards and thousands of touch cues, how robotic spots are quietly changing the craft, and why he and Phish’s Chris Kuroda will be swapping rigs at Madison Square Garden. You’ll also hear the Paul McCartney moment in the Taylor Hawkins tribute dressing room that may have sparked the whole tour, and why Howard insists this is a rejuvenation, a celebration, and proof that no matter the rig, the room, or the era, you’ve gotta ALWAYS BE PERFORMING. Because it’s what we do. Press play and enjoy, folks. 00:00:00 Gig Gab 530 – Monday, April 20th, 2026 April 20th: Pizza Delivery Driver Appreciation Day Guest co-host: Howard Ungerleider 00:02:18 Walked into a NYC office to get a recording contract for his band “You need to learn about this industry before you come knocking on people's doors.” Introduced him to Action Talent (which became American Talent International) 00:06:21 For $75/week delivering coffee and working in the mailroom After a year and a half he got booted from Monmouth University, then became the ATI gopher 00:08:17 Hey, do you want Fleetwood Mac to play here? 00:11:44 Booking agent 00:13:17 Can you fill in for a week as Blue Oyster Cult's tour 00:14:51 Howard and Rush were surprised to have Howard working there “I need ten grand” – “no, you can sleep on the floor instead” 00:18:11 Howard had to show Geddy that New York pizza was better than Toronto pizza 00:19:01 Howard learns about Canadian cold Howard's driving, Geddy's riding shotgun, Neil's reading, Alex is smoking a joint 00:20:42 Geddy says, “get out and take a breath of fresh air” 00:22:05 John Rutsey had opted out of touring, Howard moves to Toronto while they're auditioning drummers “Eventually Neil [Peart] walked in…and that was it.” 00:23:32 Howard and Neil used to jam at Neil's house Genesis and Supertramp 00:24:19 Road life's not so bad 200 gigs a year on the road 00:26:09 Rush took a break, Howard did Queensryche and Tesla Howard designed Roll The Bones, but it's the only tour he couldn't operate 00:27:51 Howard tour-managed and lighting designed and operated every tour up through Presto, after which he dropped tour-managing 00:28:41 Dave realizes he met Howard on the Presto tour 00:31:43 Don't put up with crap 00:32:03 Howard's been doing Rush's lights since 1974 00:33:05 Moving from clubs and theaters to arenas Howard embedded himself into See Factor, the lighting company. During 2020, the longtime collaborators shifted focus from covers to original material, quickly writing ten songs and entering Sonic Stomp Studio with producer Mike Orlando (Category 7, Adrenaline Mob). Joined by drummer Joe D'Aqui, the group crafted a heavy, story-driven sound rooted in influences like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Alice in Chains, and Tool. Despite pandemic delays, the sessions yielded their debut full-length album Blame', released in October 2022.Following the addition of guitarists Bruce Gatewood and Johnny James Barone, the band gained traction with a heavier reimagining of Toto's “Hold the Line,” now their most-streamed track. Lineup changes continued with drummer Howie Fallon joining in 2024, bringing renewed chemistry and power, though tragedy struck later that year with the passing of Gatewood. In late 2024, Jimmy Kocha joined, filling the role of co-lead guitarist, solidifying the lineup that is currently in full force today. Honoring his legacy, the band pushed forward, releasing the Smoke & Mirrors EP in March 2025—a sharp, socially reflective six-song release. The group is currently at work on a new full-length album, slated for release in early 2026. Chapter 3: Pipeman interviews Southern California's newest force in melodic death metal, Ravenmocker, and their second single / music video “Where The Raven Flies” to follow their debut track "Infallible."The new single continues building the band's identity: soaring melody, cultural storytelling, and a modern take on the melodic death metal spirit once championed by acts like Children of Bodom, Insomnium, and Kalmah."Where The Raven Flies" is an anthemic, cinematic track that tells the origin story of the Raven Mocker, a cryptid from Adirondack and Cherokee lore. Known as a harbinger of death, the Raven Mocker feeds on the sick and dying, stealing the remaining years of its victims' lives. The single paints vivid imagery of the creature soaring over forests and villages, acting as both reaper and omen.Click Here to Subscribe to The Adventures of Pipeman for PERKS, BONUS Content & FREE GIVEWAYS! Pipeman in the Pit is a music, festival, and interview segment of The Adventures of Pipeman Radio Show (#pipemanradio) and from The King of All Festivals while on The Pipeman Radio Tour. Pipeman in the Pit features all kinds of music and interviews with bands & music artists especially in the genres of Heavy Metal, Rock, Hard Rock, Classic Rock, Punk Rock, Goth, Industrial, Alternative, Thrash Metal & Indie Music. “I don't think I'm smart enough to listen to this…”   As with the many legendary concept albums that have come before, masterpieces such as King Diamond's Abigail, Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime, and Dream Theater's Scenes From A Memory, THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT, the latest offering from OPETH, is one of the finest examples of storytelling ever captured in audio form and is their first proper “concept album” to date.    “They cram so much into such a small space…”   Chronicling the reading of the will of a wealthy patriarch (and featuring Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull as the patriarch in question), THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT perfectly represents the culmination of the various components that have established OPETH as a progressive metal force to be reckoned with for more than 30 years.    “I realize this is not y'all's favorite flavor of the month…”   With a seamless blending of their early progressive and melodic death metal period through their more eclectic, 70's prog rock infused progressive metal period of the 2010's, OPETH is akin to a “haunted house version of Dream Theater”, loaded with a wide  variety of sonic textures, top tier instrumental prowess, and vivid lyrical imagery, all of which are covered in a thin drapery of darkness.    “Have they ever done anything ‘hooky'?”   JOIN US as we take on what is arguably one of the finest progressive metal concept albums in existence (and most certainly a top contender for “Album Of The Year”) and quite possibly the greatest OPETH album of all time, THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on your favorite Podcast app Follow us on the Socials: Facebook - Instagram - TikTok Email: metalnerdery@gmail.com Can't be LOUD Enough Playlist on Spotify Metal Nerdery Munchies on YouTube @metalnerderypodcast Show Notes: (00:01): “I would like to take this moment to say…AND…” / #GeorgiaBulldogs / “Dangole sports ball dawgs…” / #Natty / “Speaking of Athens…my only thought was…R.E.M. must have written this song…”/ #WeBuiltThisCityASMR / “That's when they dropped the Jefferson…”/ “As long as there's a bend in the wrist, you're fine…”/ #markthetime / ***WARNING: #listenerdiscretionisadvised *** / #waitforit #markthetime / “And I screamed like a little girl…not one footstep did I hear…”/ ***WELCOME BACK TO THE METAL NERDERY PODCAST!!!*** / #strangerinthetub #jackoffhand / “Like a chimpanzee?”    (06:06): PATREON US at www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast  / “Who knows? Welcome back to When Words Fail, Music Speaks – the podcast that battles depression one riff at a time. In today's episode, host James Cox sits down with the charismatic front‑man of the 80s‑metal‑infused outfit All Singers (aka Mike Golarz) for a deep‑dive into the healing power of music, the quirks of self‑teaching, and the raw joy of live performance. We kick off with Mike's origin story: a childhood of backyard jam sessions, a classically trained girlfriend who nudged his vocal chops, and a love‑letter to the acoustic guitar that still shapes his songwriting today. He shares practical tips for aspiring guitarists—why Tom Petty's simple chords are the perfect launchpad, how to survive sore fingertips, and the surprisingly effective “belly‑rub” superstition he uses to keep his airflow in check while recording. From there, we trace the band's unlikely formation during the pandemic—how an 80s hair‑metal cover group morphed into All Singers, the serendipitous connections that landed them opening for legends like Ace Frehley, L.A. Guns, Queensryche, and even two versions of Queensryche. Mike reflects on the thrill of sharing the stage with his childhood heroes and the humility that keeps those icons grounded. The conversation then shifts to their upcoming record “We Own the Night,” slated for a November 14, 2025 release, and the quirky rituals that fuel Mike's creative process. He also reveals his “unskippable” album list — from Soundgarden's Bad Motorfinger to James' pick "Black Sabbath's Dehumanizer" — and the one record that still moves him to tears: Stevie Ray Vaughan's Texas Flood.Whether you're a budding musician, a metalhead, or simply seeking a soundtrack for life's ups and downs, this episode delivers a hearty mix of humor, honesty, and hard‑earned wisdom. Grab your headphones, turn up the volume, and let the music speak.

“I had to watch it 3 or 4 times to finally get there…”   Ahhh, the 80's. A time when people could actually afford to live, back when Taco Bell was both super cheap and equally delicious, horror movies were genuinely scary and often boasted incredibly “special” special effects, and terrified parents everywhere were completely “freaking the motherfrickin' frick out” over heavy metal and the ensuing “Satanic Panic” that followed. (Remember, we're talking about the 80's here…)   “I kinda feel like Satan probably listens to Air Supply nonstop…or Gino Vanelli…”   Not to worry though, because Tipper Gore was on the case, going out of her way to ensure that the future prosperity of heavy metal would be secure forever with the PMRC seal of approval (PARENTAL ADVISORY – EXPLICIT CONTENT) plastered on the cover of everything that would be deemed essential listening.   Thanks to the diligent efforts and painstaking research of Tipper Gore and her Parents Music Resource Center, the PMRC lovingly crafted “The Filthy Fifteen” for American parents to ensure that their children would only be exposed to the finest audio artistry the heavy metal genre (and somehow, also Satan) had to offer.  One of the bands included on that fateful list were the founders of black metal, VENOM (ironically, rated “O” … for “Obviously” …as in “Obviously, your kids should be listening to this!”).    Hailing from probably the fanciest, most upper crust sounding city in all of England, Newcastle upon Tyne's 3-piece of evil VENOM came blasting out of the gates of hell with what would become the foundation for the black metal genre that would begin its ascent into heavy metal culture around the same time as thrash metal in the early 80's, with a sound combining the rawness of Motorhead, the darkness of Sabbath, and the speed of thrash with an imagery reminiscent of KISS if they were actually satanists.    If Black Sabbath are ground zero for the formation of heavy metal as we know it, then VENOM is no doubt the Black Sabbath of the black metal genre. With a dark, detached creepiness that sounds like something recorded in an underground mausoleum, VENOM are the originators of extreme metal and were out in front, scaring the hell out of parents everywhere and delighting young and impressionable metalheads the world over.   Happy Halloween everyone!!! It's time to celebrate spooky season the way we did back in the 80's, by going through your kids trick-or-treat plunder and picking out all of that “good candy”. Queensryche were always different from their hard rock & hair metal brethren in the 80s & 90s. Based out of Seattle, Geoff Tate (vocals), Chris DeGarmo (lead guitar), Michael Wilton (lead & rhythm guitar), Eddie Jackson (bass) and Scott Rockenfield (drums) created a more prog rock sound akin to that of Rush or Dream Theater. Tate's soaring vocals against the brilliant guitar work and fiesty rhythm section gave them a sound all their own in a sea of hair, power chords and the occasional power ballad. After coming off 1988's concept album Operation: Mindcrime, the band were confident and ready to take the next step to superstardom. 1990's Empire is generally referred to as their best effort and was their best seller with more than 3 million in the US alone. Thanks to MTV and rock radio, Queensryche music was in the air in 1990 and 1991 (at least until the fall) thanks to big hit like the title track, Best I Can, Jet City Woman and Another Rainy Night (Without You) and perhaps the greatest hard rock power ballad of all time, Silent Lucidity. That last song topped the mainstream rock charts and landed in the top ten on Billboard. However, thanks to elements at work in their hometown, the party didn't last. Once Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit hit the airwaves in the fall of 1991, hard rock and hair metal would soon be shown the door by record companies looking to capitalize on the new trend. Though 1994's Promised Land went platinum and had some highlights, it was very out of place in the new flannel-clad culture. Eventually, DeGarmo would leave never to return and turmoil would separate Tate from his band in the 21st Century. However, this album stands as a testament to the bands talent and should be remembered as one of the best of the era. In 1990 the heavy metal band Queensryche asked its listeners, “Is there anybody listening?”, a lament for not being heard in a world of overstimulation, noise and artificially.  In healthcare in 2025, the answer is yes: someone is listening. But the listener just might be a machine. Ambient AI is one of the most promising applications of the recent AI wave, in my opinion anyway and possibly that of my guest, Dr. David Canes. Dr. Canes is a Boston-area urologist, owner of WellPrept, and a self-described tech enthusiast.  Recently David put out the YouTube video 11 Ways to Use AI In Your Practice Right Now, which I link to in the show notes. But he's also the author of “Why AI scribes are changing medicine and the risks you must know.” I'd describe him as an early adopter and enthusiast but with his eyes open to potential shortcomings. We cover the pros and cons of ambient AI and other forms of AI, and how it is impacting documentation, coding, and the revenue cycle, on this episode of Off the Record. We discuss: David's path into medicine and ultimately urology Why he chose to adopt a positive mindset in the use of new technologies rather than fear or resistance Ambient AI: How it operates and what a patient encounter looks like using this tech, start to finish Positive impacts on provider burnout, charting, E/M professional billing, and CPT Cons of the new tech, including hallucinated answers and inaccurate summaries Use of generative AI large language models in patient diagnosis  Show notes Why AI scribes are changing medicine and the hidden risks you must know: https://kevinmd.com/2025/02/why-ai-scribes-are-changing-medicine-and-the-hidden-risks-you-must-know.html  11 Ways to Use AI in Your Practice Right Now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJLqIU2nbzc

Have any of you watched the movie “The Notebook”?  At the end, one of the characters, who has dementia, experiences an episode of lucidity.  When I watched it, between tears (I'm a complete softie) I remember thinking, “Oh no! This will give people false hope!  That their loved one is ‘in there.' If only they could find the right key to unlock the lock and let them out.” Today we talk about lucid episodes and what they might mean to the person with dementia, their family and loved ones, to philosophers, to clinicians, to neuroscientists. Our guests are Andrea Gilmore-Bykovskyi, a nurse researcher, and Andrew Peterson, a philosopher. We had a wide ranging discussion that touched on (among many things): A consensus definition developed at an NIH conference, organized by the recently retired NIA program officer Basil Eldadah (we will miss you Basil!). Andrew complicates this definition, stating is raises more questions than answers. Hospice nurses know that terminal lucidity “is a thing” and have pretty much all  seen it Family and caregiver stories of lucid episodes and what they meant to them, including early glimpses into a study Andrea is doing using video to capture episodes and show them to family. Potential for experiences to elicit “false hope”, misunderstanding/misinterpreting, and changing say code status from DNR to full code (rare but happens). Sam Parnia's work on brain activity during CPR and near death episodes Ethical issues these lucid episodes raise  Should clinicians treat people with dementia as always lucid? Having some level of awareness?  Parallels between how we treat people with advanced dementia, who may or may not be lucid, and how we treat AI, who may or may not be conscious, or experiencing paradoxical lucidity on their way to full consciousness.  I try to say please and thank you to the AI I interact with other than Alexa, who is obviously way behind. The Age of Aging podcast episode on lucidity, featuring Anne Bastings, Jason Karlawish, Elizabeth Donnarumma, and Justin Clapp Was Andrew's song choice, “I can see clearly now” better than Eric's suggestion “Silent Lucidity” by Queensryche?   Enjoy! -Alex Smith

Send us a textThe battle for creative ownership takes center stage in this revealing episode as we unpack Five Finger Death Punch's decision to re-record their entire catalog after their record label sold their music without consultation. This Taylor Swift-esque move highlights the ongoing tension between artists and the business machinery that often controls their art.We dive into the fascinating world of band name ownership disputes where founding members like Steven Piercy of Ratt and Jeff Tate of Queensryche have been legally barred from using the very band names they created. The stories reveal just how precarious artistic identity can be in the music industry's legal landscape, where blood, sweat, and tears building a brand can be lost through contractual fine print. The show takes a lighter turn when we crowd-source the ultimate road trip playlist, with listeners suggesting everything from AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" to Toto's "Africa" – complete with the heartbreaking backstory that the songwriter never got to visit the continent before his death. These musical discussions highlight how deeply songs become interwoven with our travel experiences and memories. We also touch on Alan Jackson's final tour performance at age 66, where health issues have forced him to retire from the road despite sounding great vocally – a poignant reminder of the physical toll touring takes, even on country legends. Between Foreigner continuing without a single original member and Bruce Springsteen releasing decades-old unreleased tracks, the episode examines how artists and their music evolve, persist, or transform over time. What song would you add to your road trip playlist first?
