Today's Gospel shows us the Canaanite woman who doesn't give up until Jesus heals her daughter. She's a model for us of persevering prayer. Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, August 9, 2020, the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. In today's first reading, Elijah gives us an example of how we should respond to the increasingly difficult circumstances around us: listen for the still, small voice of the Lord. The Gospel shows us what happens when we take our eyes off Jesus -- but the Lord Jesus doesn't punish Peter, but immediately comes when Peter calls out to Him. In the midst of these challenging times, we need to do what we can to keep our eyes on Jesus, listen to His voice, and draw ever closer to Him. Key words: hope, trust, prayer, contemplation, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Edith Stein, St. Dominic
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, August 2, 2020, the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. Fr. Ed notes that the Scriptures read at today's Mass are tailor-made for the times in which we're currently living (the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, etc.). Who isn't hungry and thirsty for sanity, for safety, but especially for that which gives meaning to our lives: more of Jesus? Key words: Eucharist, Scripture, compassion, mercy, prayer, St. Ignatius of Loyola
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, July 26, 2020, the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. Homily given at the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, July 19, 2020, the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. Reflecting on today's Gospel, Fr. Ed notes that we all were weeds before our Baptism, but we don't have to stay weeds. So how can we build bridges between ourselves and people of different races, backgrounds, etc., that will help bring Jesus into situations and bring people into the Kingdom? Key words: evangelism, love, compassion, mercy, healing
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, July 12, 2020, the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. How can our words build up rather than tear down? Key words: grace, speech, dignity, social media
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, July 5, 2020, the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to take His yoke upon us and learn from Him: to see things as He sees them, to love with His love, to understand how He wants us to live. This is particularly crucial in the complicated times in which we live. The starting point has to be that everyone is made in the image and likeness of God and loved by Jesus, and so we must treat them with love, dignity, and respect. Key words: racism, social justice, human person, dignity, respect
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, June 28, 2020, the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. In today's first reading, the Prophet Elisha responds to the woman's lack of children by assuring her that, in a year, she will have a son. He has a lesson for us about asking Jesus about the circumstances that we're facing today and how He wants us to respond. Key words: praise, worship, singing, contemplation
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, June 21, 2020, the Solemnity of the Anniversary of the Dedication of Christ the King's Church, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. (The actual dedication occurred on June 24, 2001, but since it is the Solemnity of the Birth of St. John the Baptist, we receive permission each year to celebrate the dedication on the closest Sunday in Ordinary Time.) This year, this Sunday is also Father's Day. Fr. Ed reminds us that the dedication anniversary is not about the building, as important as a church dedicated to the worship of God is. It's about us, who are called to be living stones in the temple of God. Keywords: worship, love, fathers
Homily given at the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, June 14, 2020, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. Today's first reading is one of many amazing bread miracles recorded in Scripture. All of them are meant to prepare us for the greatest bread miracle of all: when Jesus transformed bread and wine into His very Body and Blood, the same miracle that takes place at every Mass. Keywords: Eucharist, faith, trust, evangelization
Homily given at the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, June 7, 2020, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. (This celebration took place in the midst of the restrictions that were imposed as a result of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.) Fr. Ed notes that the purpose of this feast is not to know more about the Trinity. The purpose of this feast is to fall more deeply in love with each of the Persons of the Trinity. Each One of the Them wants to have a personal relationship with you. We are loved beyond words, pursued by a Lover who loved us first. Keywords: Father, Son, Holy Spirit, Song of Songs
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, May 31, 2020, the Solemnity of Pentecost, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. As with any celebration in the Church, Pentecost is not meant to be just a remembrance of something that happened 2,000 years ago, but something for all of our lives now. The Catechism tells us that the Sacrament of Confirmation is meant to be Pentecost in the life of the believer. (See Catechism paragraph 1302.) We just need to ask for more of the Presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Fr. Ed gives some examples from his own life. Keywords: Holy Spirit, Pope John XXIII, Vatican II, charismatic renewal, evangelization
Homily given at the 4:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday, March 14, 2020, the 3rd Sunday of Lent, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. God provided for the Israelites miraculously when He freed them from Egypt, yet in the first reading we see how quickly they lost trust in His provision. We frequently do the same thing, despite the fact that Jesus is always present to us, as He was to the Samaritan woman in the Gospel. His love transformed the Samaritan woman and her village; His love can transform us if we will let Him. Key words: evangelization, conversion, trust
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, March 1, 2020, the 1st Sunday of Lent, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. The first reading recounts the Fall in which Adam and Eve believed a lie about God, and things have been going downhill ever since. But it's not without hope because God is crazy in love with us, and He delights to save and restore us. Lent is not about what we give up. It's about making choices that will help us fall more deeply in love with Him. Key words: salvation, redemption, healing, restoration, Scripture, Bible, Word of God
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, February 23, 2020, the 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. The last verse of today's Gospel calls us to "be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect." We can't do that on our own. We have to turn to God for grace and healing. Key words: prayer, healing, conversion, love
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, February 16, 2020, the 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. The opening sentence of today's first reading says, "If you choose you can keep the commandments..." So why do we find it so hard to keep the commandments? Fr. Ed looks at that question and what the Lord Jesus has for us to bring us to a point that we can do that. Key words: sacraments, healing, love
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, February 9, 2020, the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. This Sunday was also World Marriage Day. Reflecting on today's readings, Fr. Ed says that marriage and family as the Church teaches about them are under attack today. The best way to bring our marriages to fulfillment is by yielding fully to the King of Kings. Then our marriages can serve us in being the Light of the World. Keywords: evangelization, worship, conversion, Eucharist
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, February 2, 2020, the Feast of the Presentation, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. In today's Gospel, we find two people, Simeon and Anna, who recognize the infant Jesus as the Messiah. Those attentive to the Spirit were prepared for His Presentation. If we're going to recognize Jesus and what He's doing and cooperate with Him, we have to spend time with Him every day. Are you prepared for Him? Keywords: evangelization, worship, conversion, Candlemas
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, January 26, 2020, the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. In his Apostolic Letter "Aperuit Illis," Pope Francis designated the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time "Word of God Sunday." Jesus gives us the Word of God--Himself--as an essential part of our relationship with Him. Fr. Ed explains why the Holy Father has chosen to name this special Sunday. Keywords: Scripture, evangelization, worship, conversion
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, January 19, 2020, the 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. This Sunday was also the beginning of the Week of Prayer for Christan Unity, which Fr. Ed made the focus of his homily. Jesus calls us to be One in Him and gives us the Spirit to help us do so. How can we build bridges of love among the members of the Body of Christ without compromising the truth? Keywords: evangelization, worship, conversion
Homily given at the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, January 12, 2020, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. In today's Gospel, we hear the Father call Jesus "my beloved." Elsewhere in the Gospels, Jesus tells us that the Father loves us with the same love with which the Father loves Him. You are the Beloved! What are the barriers to us receiving the Father's love? Keywords: evangelization, worship, conversion
Homily given at the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. (Unfortunately, the opening of the homily was not recorded.) As we start a new calendar year, now is a good time to incorporate into our lives the four pillars of the spiritual life that we discussed in the homily series during Advent: the Eucharistic, Marian, charismatic, and contemplative. If we do, we'll grow in the things we all want most--joy, hope, and most of all, love. Keywords: evangelization, worship, conversion, Scripture
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, December 29, 2019, the Feast of the Holy Family, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph faced many challenges, but they were filled with joy as they loved and cared for each other. This is what Jesus has for our families, too, but to receive that grace, we need to pray with and for each other and take advantage of the intercession of the Holy Family for us. Keywords: Christmas, love, trust, joy, prayer

Ed continues his series on Pope St. John Paul the Great's four pillars of spirituality that help us to grow in union with Jesus and to become more aware of His Presence with us: the Eucharistic, contemplative, charismatic, and Marian. After reviewing the previous three pillars, Fr. Ed turns to the fourth pillar, the contemplative. The fourth pillar is in one sense the foundation for all the rest. Contemplation prepares us for Him to be born more deeply within us. Keywords: evangelization, worship, conversion, Eucharist

Keywords: evangelization, worship, conversion
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, December 8, 2019, the Second Sunday of Advent, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. Fr. Ed continues his series on Pope St. John Paul the Great's four pillars of spirituality that help us to grow in union with Jesus: the Eucharistic, contemplative, charismatic, and Marian. Today, Fr. Ed focused on the Marian pillar. The Lady's "yes" made this season of Advent possible. She longs to be a Mother to us, especially as we, in response to Bishop Boyea's request, consecrate the parish and ourselves to her. The recording ends with the prayer of consecration. Keywords: evangelization, worship, conversion, Rosary, Brown Scapular
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, December 1, 2019, the First Sunday of Advent, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. The grace that rests on the season of Advent is the grace for a deeper union with Jesus, that He may be born more deeply in us. During the season of Advent, Fr. Ed is focusing on Pope St. John Paul the Great's four pillars of spirituality that help us to grow in union with Jesus: the Eucharistic, contemplative, charismatic, and Marian. Today, Fr. Ed focused on the Presence of the Lord Jesus in the Eucharist. He shared some ways to help make the Lord Jesus' Presence in the Eucharist a greater focus in our lives. Note: Unfortunately, the opening sentence of the homily was cut off in the recording. Keywords: evangelization, worship, conversion

We can prepare for that by examining our lives and asking ourselves, "Is He my King?" Keywords: evangelization, worship, conversion, Scripture
Homily given at the 4:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday, November 16, 2019, the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. Today's Gospel story of Zaccheus demonstrates that every human heart is built in a way that it won't rest until it rests in Jesus. There are very particular ways that Jesus calls some of us to let other people know that there's a Savior who loves to save. As we start Vocational Awareness Week, Fr. Ed reflects on what we need in order to discern the call of Jesus on our lives and shares a little of his own call to the priesthood. Keywords: evangelization, worship, vocations

Having full, active and conscious participation at Mass is our goal. Keywords: worship, evangelization
Homily given at the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, October 13, 2019, the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. The Lord delights to heal and work His wonders and He uses us to do it. Both today's first reading and the Gospel recount the healing of lepers. Although healing was rare until the time of Jesus, in the Church it became more common, to the point that St. James in his letter describes the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, which healed people. Then after several hundred years healing waned again until the Second Vatican Council when we started seeing a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Keywords: healing, sacraments, charisms

Homily given at the 4:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday, September 14, 2019, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. After first describing why the Feast is being celebrated today instead of the Vigil Mass for the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Fr. Ed explains that the Feast of the Exaltation, or Triumph, of the Holy Cross celebrates three events: the Finding of the Cross, the Dedication of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, and the recovery of the Relics of the Cross after their theft by the pagans. Keywords: Evangelization, worship
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, September 8, 2019, the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. In the first reading, the writer of the Book of Wisdom asks, "Who can know God's counsel?" The answer is, "You can." Jesus reveals His will and plan for us, especially as we read the Scriptures and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. There are other resources available to us as well, such as Catholic radio and Alpha. Keywords: Scripture, worship, prayer, Eucharist
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, September 1, 2019, the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. Society in the time of Jesus was very status conscious. Jesus, however, in today's Gospel calls us to meet the needs of the poor. Pope Francis has recently called on the Charismatic Renewal to take particular care for the poor. As a concrete expression of this and in light of the connections that we already have in Flint through the Servants of God's Love and priest alumni of CTK serving there, Fr. Ed asked CTK parishioners to pray about the possibility of taking the Catholic Community of Flint as a sister parish. Please ask the Lord Jesus what He has in mind for us in this way and let Fr. Ed know via email at pastor@ctkcc.net. Keywords: evangelization, worship
