Can Nauvoo Land Deeds Really Prove Polygamy? - LDS Discussions Pt. 82 | Ep. 2186

    Mormon Stories - LDS

What can Nauvoo land deeds actually tell us about Joseph Smith and the practice of plural marriage? In this episode of LDS Discussions, we take a close look at Nauvoo land records and examine claims that deeds issued to women –including women who were later identified as plural wives of Joseph Smith –provide evidence for Joseph Smith's practice of polygamy. The records are fascinating, but they are also considerably more complicated than they might appear at first glance. We examine the legal and historical context surrounding Nauvoo property, including the difference between a grantee and a recognized landowner, quitclaim deeds, coverture, widow's dower rights, property held in the  names of women and children, and the ways Joseph Smith and others used property arrangements to protect land from creditors and other legal complications. We also take a  closer look at individual cases involving Helen Mar Kimball, Sarah Ann Whitney, Flora Woodworth, Mary Elizabeth Rollins Lightner, Lydia Dibble Granger, Mercy Fielding Thompson, Philinda Myrick, Emma Smith, and others. Several of these women had connections to plural marriage, but that raises an important historical question: Does the existence of a deed help explain why a particular transaction happened, or does the deed itself provide evidence that polygamy was the reason for the transaction? Throughout the episode, we compare the deeds with tax records, William Clayton's journal, bankruptcy proceedings, and other contemporary evidence to see whether the names and dates appearing on the deeds accurately reflect who actually owned, occupied, controlled, or benefited from the property. One of the key conclusions is that you cannot simply take Nauvoo land deeds at face value. A plural marriage may sometimes provide a possible explanation for a property transaction, but the transaction itself does not necessarily prove that a plural marriage existed. This episode explores the complicated gap between what was legally recorded, what people were actually doing, and what later historians assume those records mean.___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals.  Our overall mission is to: 1. Ian explains how Swedenborg's alleged revelations became foundational to the New Church, including its “internal sense” of Scripture, rejection of key biblical doctrines, works-based view of salvation, and unusual beliefs about heaven, angels, and the afterlife.  Most importantly, Ian shares how encountering the biblical gospel—salvation through Christ alone rather than his own works—ultimately led him out of the New Church and radically changed his understanding of Jesus, Scripture, and salvation.    Be Part of the Mission to Change Lives: HERE SHOP OUR MERCH: HERE

A Prayer to Turn to Jesus When You're Too Tired

    Your Daily Prayer Podcast

Sometimes exhaustion goes so deep that even turning to God feels like more than the body and spirit can manage. Not a crisis of faith, not a decision to walk away — just a weariness so complete that the simplest prayer becomes a reach too far. Those moments carry a particular kind of shame for believers who expected their faith to hold up better under pressure, who pictured leaning on God looking a little more steady and a little less desperate. Psalm 9:10 speaks directly into that shame with a promise that does not require perfect faith to claim: the Lord has never forsaken those who seek Him. Those who know His name, who have placed their trust in Him, who have made it their practice to seek Him, will never be left alone. Not even in the moments when they are too broken to look His way. The years of seeking, knowing, and trusting God do not evaporate in a hard season. They become the foundation that holds even when the person standing on it has nothing left. God is not present because our faith looks impressive. He is present because He loves us, because we love Him, and because we belong to Him. The weak, barely-formed prayer, "Jesus, help me," is enough. And on the days when even that is beyond reach, He is still there. His presence is not contingent on our performance. Child of God, you are sealed with the promise of His presence, His salvation, and His grace, always, in every valley, whether you can feel it or not. If today's prayer speaks to you, I think you will love my latest book, Win Over Worry: Conquer What Shakes You and Soar With the One Who Overcomes. You can find it on Amazon or your favorite online retail site. I hope it blesses you! Today's Bible Verse "Those who know your name trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you."— Psalm 9:10, NIV Ponder Today God's presence does not depend on our faith looking or feeling perfect. He is not there because we showed up strong. He is there because we are His and He loves us — and that does not change based on how our faith performs in the hardest moments. "Jesus, help me" is a complete and sufficient prayer. When exhaustion strips away everything else, the weakest and most honest cry still reaches the One who hears. God does not require eloquence or emotional strength before He responds. The years of seeking God become the foundation that holds in the seasons when you have nothing left. A history of knowing His name, placing trust in Him, and practicing the discipline of turning toward Him does not disappear in a hard season. It carries you even when you cannot carry yourself. Feeling forsaken and being forsaken are not the same thing. Psalm 9:10 is a promise, not a feeling. God has never forsaken those who seek Him — not in their strongest moments, and not in their most depleted ones either. Rest in your weariness without shame. You do not have to pull your faith together before God will show up. He is already there, with His constant care, His continual protection, and His unending, unconditional love — even in the pit. A Prayer for You Today Ever-present God, I praise You that You never leave my side. Even when I struggle to sense Your presence in my deepest pain and suffering, You are there. Even when my faith feels far from perfect or I wonder if I am deserving of Your love and care, You are there. Because I am Yours and You are mine, You will never forsake me. I have chosen to seek You, to know You, and to place my trust in You. So no matter what circumstances surround me, I know You will follow me, love me, and forever bless me. Thank You for the great gift of Your constant care and unconditional love. In Jesus' name, Amen. Want More? S. Wright welcomes Golden Scroll Awards finalist Judi Galloway for a practical conversation about developing a deeper relationship with God through Scripture.Judi shares how she came to Christ as a child, grew up in a Christian home, and eventually began asking an important question: How do people learn to see so much in the Bible? That question helped launch her own journey into deeper Bible study. After years of participating in guided Bible studies, Judi felt prompted to begin studying Scripture on her own. She began using a journaling approach based on the SOAP method — Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer — and discovered that writing while studying helped deepen her comprehension, retention, and communion with God.That experience eventually became the foundation for her seven-week, 35-lesson Bible study workbook, Examining God's Word: Breathe New Into Your Love for the Bible. The study combines Scripture passages, prompts, practical study skills, journaling, testimonies, and faith-building lessons designed to help readers immediately put what they are learning into practice. In this episode, you'll discover:Why believers should learn to examine Scripture for themselves. How journaling can improve Bible-study comprehension and retention. How the SOAP method can provide a starting framework for studying Scripture. Why Judi designed her study to work for both new Bible readers and experienced students. The importance of following the example of the Bereans by examining Scripture to determine whether what we are being taught is true. How Examining God's Word uses faith as a recurring theme throughout its lessons. Why Bible study should ultimately lead to personal application and a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. How believers can develop their own rhythm of studying and communing with God through His Word.Judi also explains why the physical workbook format is important to her method: readers are encouraged to work directly with the lessons while keeping a separate journal where they record what God is teaching them. Her goal is not merely to provide information about Bible study but to teach people how to study Scripture themselves.Whether you are opening the Bible seriously for the first time or have studied Scripture for decades, this conversation offers encouragement to keep digging deeper into God's Word.Featured Guest: Judi GallowayFeatured Book: Examining God's Word: Breathe New Into Your Love for the BibleHost: T. The Bible never claims to be a science book. Though there are many things about our world we don't understand, it shouldn't diminish our faith. In this sermon, Pastor Allen Jackson discusses how Christianity and science are more compatible than culture often believes. He also teaches about the existence of angels and the spiritual dimension that impacts our lives. In Scripture, Jesus appears outside of time and space to guide and recruit His followers, and Pastor Allen shares how trusting and believing in the truth of Jesus' identity is the best way to navigate existence. Our world is not simple or easily understood, but we don't have to be full of doubt or fear when we rely on the Lord to lead us.

BIG Life Devotional | Daily Devotional for Women

Jesus tells a little story with big impact. Luke 8: 16-17, “No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house. For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.” Imagine a dark room where you can see nothing. You light a lamp so you can find your way around. How ridiculous would it be to cover that light up and stumble your way through darkness again? You have light now – use it! Jesus is reminding us that he has put his light in us. And his light within us is meant to be seen. Here’s where we get this twisted – we make this about us. Girl, this isn’t about you. This isn’t about others seeing you, noticing you, or liking you. This is about others seeing JESUS IN YOU. The lamp doesn’t say, “Look at me, look at me, I’m so glorious.” No, the lamp simply shines the glorious light it has from within. The lamp doesn’t create the light – the lamp CARRIES THE LIGHT. You don’t have to manufacture God’s light. You don’t have to become impressive. You don’t have to have your life perfectly together. You simply have to stop hiding what God is doing in you. What is God doing within you? If you’ve surrendered your heart and mind to him, he’s changing you. Can you see how he’s rewritten your desires to align with his desires? Can you see how he’s realigned your priorities? Can you see how he’s changed the way you see people and respond to situations? This is the literal work of 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun.” Do you see how Jesus’ work within you is making you a new person? Can others see it? THAT’S WHAT JESUS IS TELLING US! Let me light something within you that everyone can see. Don’t hide it – let it shine! Does anyone else look back on their journey and cringe at who they once were? Y’all, I disgust my own self. My number 1 goal was to own a private jet. My number 2 goal was to look ridiculously good in my private jet. And you know what I see when I look back on this journey – God was so incredibly patient and gracious with me. While I was growing materialistic and self-absorbed, he was absolutely determined to relentlessly chip away at my heart and recreate me. Now, the deepest desires of my heart are to have an old 1970’s Volkswagon bus where I can roadtrip to a parking lot near you, invite you to come sit down with me for coffee and a devotional, then we lock arms that day and go serve together in your community. I just want to hit the streets with you and shine Jesus in dark places. I want to get my hands dirty. I want to hit my knees. I want to sweat with hard work right along side you that makes a difference. I want my heart to break for the things that break God’s heart and actively do something about it. I want to dance and celebrate and relentlessly cheer for the good things God is doing. And then I want to hop back in my old 1970’s Volkswagon bus and roam around with God to find the next Jesus follower who wants to hop in for some coffee and live devotional and go out on another mission opportunity in their community. This is what Jesus has done in me. He changed me. He changed my desires. He changed my goals. He changed my priorities. I went from wanting a jet to an old van and a mission roadtrip. What has he done in you? What is he DOING in you? Don’t hide it – let it shine! Jesus warns of the danger of the bowl or the bed. He says, “No one lights a lamp and then COVERS it with a bowl or HIDES it under a bed. What’s your bowl? What’s your bed? It’s the things that try to cover or hide the light of Jesus within you. • It’s fear. Fear says hide while Jesus says SHINE. Then your fear becomes the bowl that hides that Jesus light in you. • It’s comfort. Sometimes it’s not that you’re really afraid, it’s just that you’re so darn comfortable as you are. God’s been nudging you to do something, but doing nothing is just easier. God’s been telling you to go, but you’ve been thinking maybe later you’ll do it. God’s been telling you to say something, but you’re just hoping someone else will speak up. Then you know what – your comfort becomes the bed where you lay and hide that Jesus light underneath it. • It’s shame. Shame whispers secrets of the past to us. Shame tells us we’re not worthy. Shame throws every bowl it can find over that Jesus light so the real you isn’t revealed. But there’s one thing you need to remind your shame – Your testimony was never ‘Look how good I’ve been’ – your testimony is forever ‘Look what Jesus has done.’ The darkest places in your life are actually where that Jesus light shines best! You know what else is the bowl trying to cover that Jesus light in you, or the bed trying to hide his light … • It’s busyness. Oh that sneaky little sucker that will slip right into our days and just make us so busy doing a thousand things, but still be hiding the light. We’re busy. We’re accomplished. We’re looking good. But we are so distracted that we aren’t actually showing the light of Jesus to the very people God has placed all around us. That’s my biggest bowl right there. I just get too busy. And my busyness will cover the light of Jesus in me and I’m just leaving people in their darkness instead of just showing them Jesus. Are you doing this too? Let’s get rid of these bowls that try to cover the light of Jesus in us. Let’s banish the beds that try to hide his light. Girls, let’s let what he has put within us SHINE! Matthew 5:16 says: “Let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Notice what Jesus doesn’t say: “…so everyone will praise you.” He says: “…so everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” That’s the whole point. We don’t shine so people will see us. We shine so people can see Him. That’s a powerful test for our lives: When people encounter me, do they see more of me—or more of Jesus? Your job isn’t to create the light. Your job is to carry it. And your job isn’t to make people admire the lamp. Your job is to make sure the lamp isn’t covered. Jesus, where do You want Your light to shine through me today? And then pay attention. Your life is someone’s opportunity to see Jesus. Don’t hide the light. Carry it. Let it shine. And when somebody sees something different in you, you don’t point to yourself. You point to Jesus. A few years ago I learned a prayer that Mother Theresa would pray every single day. I put that prayer in my notes and began praying it daily myself. It’s not magic words – it’s just a reminder to throw the bowl away and move the bed out so the LIGHT OF JESUS CAN SHINE. Here’s the prayer and how I say it: Dear Jesus, help me to spread your fragrance everywhere I go. Flood my soul with your spirit and life. Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that my life may only be a radiance of yours. Shine through me and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel your presence in my soul. Let them look up and no longer see me, but only you, Jesus. Shine on others through me.
Let me praise you in the way you love best, by shining on those around me. Let me preach YOU without preaching, not by words but by example of everything I do in love for you. Amen. Continuing the series on the Second Coming, Dr. William Lane Craig examines the Preterist view, the position, defended by scholars including G. B. Caird, R. T. France, and N. T. Wright, that the coming of the Son of Man predicted in Jesus' Olivet Discourse already happened in AD 70 with the destruction of Jerusalem. On this reading, the Great Tribulation was the horror of the Roman siege of Jerusalem, and the apocalyptic imagery of Mark 13 (e.g., darkened sun, falling stars) is symbolic language paralleled in Isaiah 13, Ezekiel 32, and Peter's Pentecost sermon in Acts 2, not a literal description of the end. Dr. Craig walks through the Preterist case, including its appeal to Daniel 7 for the Son of Man's heavenly enthronement rather than an earthly return, and explains why Mark 13:30, "this generation will not pass away," is really what drives the view. He finds it initially attractive for solving that verse, but ultimately unpersuasive: like the Rapture view, Preterism ends up requiring an invisible coming of Christ before his final return.

Patrick answers real questions from listeners, blending Catholic teaching with down-to-earth advice on everything from why animals suffer to whether pets might greet us in heaven. In quick exchanges, he weaves themes of faith, loss, generosity, and the tug between raising children and affording Catholic education; sometimes, the show jumps from tears to laughter over Pop-Tarts or the bittersweet warmth of Dolly Parton's memory. He doesn’t shrink from complexity, moving between phone calls, theology, and the quirks of daily life with a rhythm that’s both unpredictable and deeply human. John (Email) - What is the Catholic Church Doctrine or teaching about why must animals, or in this case our beloved pet, be made to suffer? And, will God allow our Pets into heaven? (00:55) Catherine - You mentioned NFP a few weeks ago. How can we be open to life while providing a Catholic education for our current children? (11:39) Patrick in NJ - I went to Confession and my sin was omission. The priest told me giving money to the poor is the same as giving them cigarettes and alcohol. (19:19) Lucy - I think God can use our pets to teach us faith and obedience. I think it is not that God allows animals to suffer, it is Him using animals to show us how to suffer and how to live. (25:39) Laurie - I would encourage women to see being open to life as an inspiration from God. I am a mother of 7, and I have yet to hear someone wish they didn't have the number of kids they had. I hear more people wish they had more. (29:09) Paulette - You were just talking about animals going to heaven. I thought your cat would be with you in heaven if you needed it to be. I heard this from a priest. (32:05) Patrick and Cyrus remanence about Dolly Parton (37:43) Raul - Is the Angel of The Lord Jesus or just interceding for people on earth? (47:34)

You set out to have more faith, not to practice witchcraft, so nothing about your prayer life ever felt like sorcery. You were quoting Scripture the whole time. You learned to declare the promise, stand on the Word, and pray until the breakthrough came. But somewhere in there your prayers quietly stopped being surrender and became leverage; you found the verse that guaranteed the outcome you already wanted and began aiming it at your finances, your marriage, your body, less like a child asking a Father and more like a technician working a system, and you never stopped to ask what He might want to change in you before He changed anything around you. My guest today is Christa Black Singh. Christa Black Singh spent years at the center of Christian worship, writing songs the church still sings and touring the world's biggest stages, before a search for healing pulled her one degree at a time into manifestation, astrology, tarot, energy work, and finally ayahuasca and plant-medicine ceremonies in Costa Rica, where she lost nearly everything before Jesus brought her home. She came back able to name what most of us cannot see: that the New Age and the prayer meeting are often running the same operating system. In this conversation, we take the cover off all of it: manifestation, Christian witchcraft, the divine feminine, New Thought and the law of attraction, and the self-help gospel that has climbed into too many pulpits under the name of a life-coach Jesus who asks nothing of you and changes nothing in you. Here is what makes it dangerous. It works. The counterfeit really does deliver the house, the outcome, the feeling, and it sends the invoice later, because a power that gives you what you want has become the source you now answer to. The question this conversation forces is not whether the New Age is real. It is whether you have been trying to run your own life as god and calling it Christianity. Wholeness never comes through control; it comes through surrender, through the fear of the Lord, through daily repentance and a hunger for Jesus Himself rather than what He can get you. So before you decide this one is about someone else, look honestly at your own prayers and ask which of them have been trying to bend God's arm instead of bowing your knee. Guest Bio Christa Black Singh is a songwriter and worship musician who spent years at the center of the Christian music world, writing for artists and movements the church still sings and touring for more than a decade with Michael W. Smith, before a long search for healing led her out of the faith and into the New Age through manifestation, energy work, and plant-medicine ceremonies that cost her nearly everything. She has since returned to Jesus and now speaks openly about the deception she once taught, helping others recognize the counterfeit and close the doors it opened. She hosts the Head to Heart podcast and teaches on spiritual discernment, deliverance, and healing. Today, I'm looking at what this case, abortion, and even the celebration of political violence reveal about something much deeper: America has a heart problem. Pornography is increasingly becoming a struggle for women—but what's really driving it, and how can Christian women fight it? Todd sits down with Fortis Fellow and biblical counselor Libby Glosson to discuss what's happening beneath the surface and the hope found in Christ. Segment 1 • Why are more women consuming pornography—and has our culture encouraged women to adopt some of the worst behaviors of men? • What are women really seeking through pornography: intimacy, acceptance, love, or escape? • Why pornography is ultimately more than a sexual problem—it's a heart and worship problem. Segment 2 • Why “just stop it” and shame aren't enough to produce lasting change. • How wrong beliefs about God's goodness, holiness, and character can fuel sexual sin. • What practical steps can women take without ignoring the deeper desires of the heart? Segment 3 • What's the difference between wanting freedom from consequences and genuinely wanting to repent? • Can repeated sexual sin dull a Christian's conscience? • How do you uncover what's really driving a recurring struggle with pornography? Segment 4 • What should you actually do when temptation hits? • Why fighting pornography may require dealing with escapism, discontentment, ingratitude, and entitlement. • In the moment of temptation, the ultimate question is: Will you love Christ more than your sin? ___ Thanks for listening! Episode 4210 │ August 25, 2026 Anthropic admitted degrading their own AI's output quality to comply with EU watermarking law. Mike Adams says that changed the entire race. WHAT THIS EPISODE COVERS  Scott Kesterson sits down with Mike Adams for their first conversation in a year, opening with the oracle versus librarian framework both have independently arrived at — AI as a tool for research and task execution, never as a divine verdict-giver — and using the Chinese farmer Wu's destroyed sesame crop as the case study for why blaming AI rather than human accountability misdiagnoses every failure. Adams delivers the most significant claim of the interview: Anthropic publicly admitted to watermarking all model outputs under EU law by statistically biasing token selection, a technical concession that provably reduces output quality, while China's DeepSeek, Qwen, and other open-published models have pulled ahead of the US frontier labs specifically because Chinese companies shared their research openly instead of hoarding it as classified defense technology. The conversation closes on the sovereign computing model both are independently building — desktop AI on AMD's Strix Halo chip, open-weight models run locally on solar power, and a coming economy where owning hardware and generating your own energy matters more than money, because decentralized cognition is, in Adams's words, the single greatest threat to globalist control of what people are allowed to know. KEY QUESTIONS ADDRESSED  What did Anthropic publicly admit about watermarking their AI model outputs to comply with EU law — and why does Mike Adams argue this technical concession provably reduces the quality of every response, even for US domestic users who never consented to it? How did China overtake the US in the AI race — and why does Adams argue that China's strategy of openly publishing research papers and sharing innovations like sparse attention mechanisms and KV cache compression across companies proved more effective than the secrecy-driven US model treating AI as classified defense technology? What is the sovereign computing model Scott and Mike Adams are both building — and why does running open-weight AI models locally on solar-powered hardware represent, in Adams's words, decentralized augmented cognition and the single greatest threat to globalist controllers who have always sought to limit public access to knowledge? What did Jesus mean when He declared that “the gates of hell shall not prevail” against His church? In this episode of The Based Boomer Podcast, Mike D’Virgilio challenges the idea that Christians should expect the church to remain permanently on the defensive. Gates are defensive structures—and Christ’s promise in Matthew 16 presents a church advancing against the kingdom of darkness, not hiding from it.Drawing from Matthew 12 and 16, Colossians 1, Ephesians 1, and Revelation 20, Mike examines Christ’s victory over Satan through His death, resurrection, and ascension. The strong man has been bound, Christ reigns, and His people have been commissioned to carry the gospel into the world. The question isn’t whether the gates of hell will overcome Christ’s church. Jesus has already told us they won’t. The question is whether Christians actually believe His promise.

If there’s one of these stories that Jesus told that has most impacted my life, it is this one. It’s a guide for daily living and it will meet you exactly where you are every day of your life. The moral of the story – JUST BE FAITHFUL. What happens when you are faithful with little? God sees you can be trusted with more. What happens when you aren’t faithful with little? God knows he simply can’t give you more. Whatever you’re doing with what you’ve already been given determines what you’re given next. The story Jesus tells is about money, but I assure you this is a lesson on more than just finances. This is about your time. This is about your talent. This is about your treasures. Today, God is asking each of his girls to take an inventory and measure what we’ve been doing with what we’ve been given. Maybe you’ll find what I’ve found … it’s time to step up and do more with what I already have before I ask for one more thing. Okay, so it’s story time and it’s a long story. Grab your Bible and read along. I’ll insert a few details along the way to help you understand the story Jesus is telling us. Matthew 25: 14-30 Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. He called together his servants and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. He gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last—dividing it in proportion to their abilities. He then left on his trip. Some translations will read ‘talents’ and that means money. My translation reads silver, again meaning money. How much money are we talking about? Answer: A ridiculous amount of money. All 3 of them received MUCH. One talent or bag was around 75 pounds of silver. To put that into perspective, the smallest measure of money given here was about 16 to 20 years of daily wages. The story Jesus is telling isn’t about the dollar amount – everyone received a lot from their master, even the one who received the least. The story is about faithfulness with what is given. The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest the money and earned five more. The servant with two bags of silver also went to work and earned two more. But the servant who received the one bag of silver dug a hole in the ground and hid the master's money. What do you think digging a hole in the ground and hiding away what you’ve been given would look like? Wouldn’t it look like wasting it? Wouldn’t it look like doing nothing with it? Wouldn’t it look like playing it safe? Yes. And wouldn’t it sometimes look like waiting until you’re more qualified, more confident, more ready? Wouldn’t it look like comparing what you have to what someone else has and deciding yours isn’t enough? Wouldn’t it look like being so afraid of losing what you’ve been given that you never actually use it? A buried gift is simply an unused gift. It’s the thing you’ve been entrusted with, but you’ve done absolutely nothing with it. It’s the talent to sing, but you’re too afraid to raise your voice for the One who gave it to you. It’s the money to give, but you’re too concerned about what they might do with it. It’s the story you’ve lived, but you’re too ashamed to tell it because you don’t want anyone to know where you’ve been. It’s the opportunity in front of you, but you’re too afraid to fail. It’s the idea God put in your heart, but you’ve talked yourself out of it before you’ve ever taken the first step. It’s the time you have, but you’ve spent it scrolling and staying busy instead of investing it in what matters. It’s the people God has placed around you, but you’re so distracted by your own life that you never stop long enough to pour into theirs. It’s the calling you’ve sensed, but you’ve buried it under a thousand excuses: “I’m too old. I’m too young. I’m not qualified. I’m not ready. Someone else could do it better.” Are you the one who has buried what you’ve been given? You haven’t invested it. You haven’t put it to work. You haven’t used it to build or grow or impact. You’ve simply buried it. Waiting. Sometimes that’s exactly how we waste what God has given us. Not by doing something terrible with it—just by doing nothing with it. Girl, do you have a hole in the ground where your calling is buried? You’ve been given so much, but you’re not doing anything with it. Not really. And you know it. What has God placed in your hands that you’ve stopped using. Look at your time, your talents and your treasures – what’s sitting stagnant in your life? What opportunity, gift, resource, idea, story, or calling have you buried because fear convinced you it was safer underground? Well, what happens when God has given us something but we have refused to use it? What happens when we’re not faithful with what we’ve already been given? Here comes the rest of the story … After a long time their master returned from his trip and called them to give an account of how they had used his money. The servant to whom he had entrusted the five bags of silver came forward with five more and said, ‘Master, you gave me five bags of silver to invest, and I have earned five more.' The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let's celebrate together!' The servant who had received the two bags of silver came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two bags of silver to invest, and I have earned two more.' The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let's celebrate together!' Then the servant with the one bag of silver came and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn't plant and gathering crops you didn't cultivate. I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth. Look, here is your money back.' But the master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy servant! If you knew I harvested crops I didn't plant and gathered crops I didn't cultivate, why didn't you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.' Then he ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one with the ten bags of silver. To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away. Now throw this useless servant into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' The master is God, and when the master returns he calls for each of us to give an account of how we used everything he has given us. It doesn’t matter what you’ve been given or how much you’ve been given – what matters is what you’ve done with it. The master wants to know. It matters! If you’ve been given 40 years of life – what have you done with those 40 years? If you’ve been given 2 children – what have you done with those 2 children? If you’ve been given a weekly paycheck of $1000 – what have you done with that pay? If you’ve been given a 2,000 square foot house – what have you done with that house? If you’ve been given mercy and grace from past mistakes – what have you done with that mercy and grace? If you’ve been given health – what have you done with that body that can move and go? You never see the master asking a servant to produce the same as what another servant produced. He’s not comparing. The master is asking each one to produce with precisely what they’ve been given. He expected each one to do something with what they had. It’s so easy for us to look at someone with extreme wealth and assume we would be so ridiculously generous if we were in their position. Oh, the good we would do with their money! But God isn’t fooled! Who you are with a $40,000 salary is who you would be with a $40 million dollar salary. More money just makes you more of who you already are. Without children it’s easy to paint a fantasy world of how we would sing sweet songs as we cooked breakfast for our little angels. Girl, if you’re not singing songs while you feed the dog, you certainly wouldn’t sing cooking for ungrateful creatures who refuse to eat. Isn’t it fun to fantasize about what you would do with a big new house with all that storage space? Oh to have a butler’s pantry! Oh mercy, walk in closets in every room! Built in storage in the garage. But do you know what you would do with it – the same exact thing you’re doing with a smaller house. If you’re complaining about this one, you would complain about that one. If you’re messy with this one, you would be messy with the next one. If you’ve overfilled this one with junk, you would overfill the next one with bigger junk. Have you ever thought – well if I could sing like her I would use it for God in big ways? Uh huh – well girl, you can cook – are you cooking for God? You can talk to a rock – are you talking to others for God? You can clean – are you cleaning that church building for God? Really, let’s check ourselves. So, let’s get to the point of the story Jesus is telling. The point isn’t to make you feel guilty about what you haven’t done. The point is to wake you up to what you still CAN do. Because here’s the beautiful thing about this story: You are not standing at the end of your story. You’re standing in the middle of it. And if you’ve buried something, you can dig it up now! If you’ve been sitting on something, you can put it to work today. If you’ve been waiting, you can start right here. The master hasn’t returned YET – but he may soon. And he’ll want to know what you’ve done with what he’s given you. You don’t have to have five bags. You don’t have to be the most talented, the most educated, the wealthiest, the prettiest, the healthiest, or the most qualified. You just have to be faithful with what is already in your hands. Stop looking at what she has. Stop wishing you had her life, her resources, her opportunities, her gifts, her energy, her story or her butt. That’s not your assignment. Your assignment is your life. Your people. Your resources. Your opportunities. Your gifts. Your story. Your time. And maybe you’ve been waiting for God to give you more when He’s been waiting for you to do something with what He’s already given you. Today, let’s stop asking for more and instead ask this – “God, what have you already given me that I’m not using?” Then let’s dig it up. Use it. Invest it. Give it. Share it. Build with it. Love with it. Serve with it. Do something with it. Because one day, the Master is coming back. And when He does, I don’t want to stand before Him with a list of reasons why I was afraid. I want to stand there with open hands and say, “You gave me this—and I gave it everything I had. I did everything I could with it God. It hasn’t been perfect, but I sure tried.” And I want to hear those words every one of us longs to hear: “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Notice what the Master celebrates. He doesn’t say, “Well done, my successful servant.” He doesn’t say, “Well done, my impressive servant.” He says, “Well done, my GOOD and FAITHFUL servant.” That’s the goal. Not bigger. Not better. Not more impressive. Faithful. JUST BE FAITHFUL. Faithful with the little. Faithful with the much. Faithful when nobody is watching. Faithful when it feels insignificant. Faithful when you’re tired. Faithful when you’re afraid. Faithful with the time, the talent, the treasure, the opportunity, and the life God has placed in your hands. Girl, you have been given so much. Don’t bury it. Take what you’ve been given and put it to work. And let’s live the rest of our lives with one simple prayer: “God, everything I have is Yours. Show me what You’ve put in my hands – and give me the courage to be faithful with it.” That’s it. That’s the assignment. JUST. BE. FAITHFUL.
