Fr. Mike offers a brief recap of today's chapter from Nehemiah, identifying the difference between those who were able to live in Jerusalem and those who were not. He explains the ancestral gifts that each tribe of Israel received and applies this concept to the vices and virtues of our families, as well as our freedom to adopt or reject them. Today we read from Nehemiah 11, Esther 8, 16, and Proverbs 21:17-20. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. The Wilderness E6 — In the Genesis and Exodus wilderness stories, God is present with his people, testing them and teaching them to listen to his voice. Most of the people fail to trust God there, but finally, in 1 Samuel, we meet a character who can succeed in the desolate place, David. In this episode, Jon and Tim explore David's wilderness stories in 1 Samuel 24-26, finding a human who will trust God for provision and listen to his voice.CHAPTERSRecap of the Theme and Setup for David (0:00-17:00)David's Successes and Tests in the Wilderness (17:00-32:00)David's Test With Nabal and Abigail (32:00-43:58)Abigail Saves the Day (43:58-1:05:12)OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPTView this episode's official transcript.REFERENCED RESOURCESYou can view annotations for this episode—plus our entire library of videos, podcasts, articles, and classes—in the BibleProject app, available for Android and iOS.Check out Tim's extensive collection of recommended books here.SHOW MUSIC“Walk In The City ft. After he broke his promise to Jesus, Peter wept bitterly. Peter was an absolutely broken man in the profoundest possible way, and yet within weeks he was poised as the leader of a new movement, about to become one of the most influential leaders in the history of the world. What broke Peter like this, and then what restored him so quickly? The answer is the same: promises. Promises are the reason he was broken, and promises are the reason he was restored. And the case of Peter tells us more about the power of commitments than, I think, any other incident in the Scripture. Let's look at what Peter learned: 1) how promises make us, and 2) how we can make promises. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on February 12, 1995. If you’re busted, you’ve been caught in the act. Is that enough to change your heart and behavior, or will you just look for better ways to get away with your wrongdoing? It’s better to be broken, brought to a place of surrender and repentance, so that God can set you on the path to a better future. In this episode, we explore the gift of tears and the importance of allowing ourselves to cry. We reflect on our experiences with crying and talk about how tears, especially in painful moments, can be a powerful expression of surrender, lament, and hope when offered to God. With the help of the Holy Spirit, our sensitivity and capacity to cry reflect the way we were beautifully created to respond to what breaks God's heart. We discuss the vulnerability of crying, the pain of resisting it, and how Jesus crying out on the cross reveals the value of our own cries. Whether you're too tired to cry, afraid to show need, or already feel safe expressing emotion, we invite you to see crying as an act of worship and intercession. In our sorrow, God meets us with love, truth, and the hope that He can actually do something with our pain. How are you tempted to give in to cynicism? In what ways are you self-reliant in this season of life? How can you be an empathetic witness to someone crying out in their life? Quote to Ponder: “Finally, she asks God to give her a gift of tears to draw his mercy down upon the world, and especially upon his church. In one of her visions, Catherine records having been told by God: “If you open your mind's eye you will see that the Holy Spirit weeps in the person of every one of my servants who offers me the fragrance of holy desire and constant humble prayer.” (St. Catherine of Sienna, The Dialogue Study Edition) “We are accustomed to thinking of crying out as something disorderly, to be repressed. The Gospel confers an immense value to our cry, reminding us that it can be an invocation, a protest, a desire, a surrender. It can even be the extreme form of prayer, when there are no words left. In that cry, Jesus gave all that he had left: all his love, all his hope.” (General Audience, September 10, 2025, Pope Leo XIV) Scripture for Lectio: “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Psalm 22:1) Sponsor - Beata Home: This episode is sponsored by Beata Home, a boutique-style print shop founded by Katie, a wife and mom of four. This week, Granger and AntMan revisit a decades-old prediction that’s resurfacing online — an MIT study from 1972 claiming society could collapse by 2040. The two dig into what that actually means, what the researchers got right and wrong, and how changing population trends might be shaping the future faster than we realize. From the idea of socialism as a global “solution” to declining birth rates and the rise of technology, the conversation moves from history to the present day. Granger shares stories from his travels, including a talk with a Venezuelan Uber driver, as they unpack why grand theories about saving the world always seem to ignore human nature. But the heart of the episode isn’t fear — it’s faith. Granger points back to Scripture, reminding listeners that no matter what predictions come true, God’s plan doesn’t change. Whether the world lasts another fifteen years or a thousand, our mission remains the same: to live for Christ and share His gospel in the time we’re given.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our mindset makes a huge difference in how we live our lives. Being conscious of our sins causes us shame and condemnation; by contrast, being aware of our innocence in Jesus Christ frees us from negative emotions and changes our behavior. Most churches constantly focus on sin; however, Jesus delivered us from this, and God has now forgiven all believers. Faith in this this makes us righteous, so that we therefore no longer have to define ourselves by our performance. Jesus is enough; believing Him reveals to us who we really are. In this Bible Story, Jesus gives an intense illustration about the true meaning of forgiveness and mercy through a servant and his master. That we must show forgiveness to others because we have been forgiven ourselves. This story is inspired by Matthew 18:21-35 & Luke 10:25-37. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.Today's Bible verse is Matthew 18:27 from the King James Version.Episode 200: As Jesus and His disciples were walking, Peter asked Him a question about forgiveness. In response, Jesus told him the story of a servant who owed his King an excessive amount of money. There was no way the servant could pay so he begged the King to spare him and the King forgave him his debt. But later, that same servant went out and found someone who owed him a very small amount of money. When the man begged for mercy, the servant had him thrown into prison. When the King found out about this, the servant who had his large debt forgiven was sent to be tormented in prison until his debt was paid. Why does the gospel offend? In this deep dive into a crucified Messiah's challenge, the Voxology hosts unpack the cultural and theological significance of the offense of Christianity. Exploring themes of cruciformity, faith and politics, and navigating cultural challenges, they focus on how the message of Jesus subverts worldly power, redefines wisdom, and invites radical humility. Together, they examine what it means to embody the gospel in a society steeped in division, and how the church's role is to reflect the countercultural, self-giving love of Christ. From redefining power and wisdom to challenging modern expressions of faith and justice, this conversation prompts vital questions: What part of the gospel should offend? And how do we ensure we don't add unnecessary barriers to its message? With references to scripture and real-world implications, this episode invites listeners to wrestle with the heart of the gospel and its relevance in today's world. Join the conversation! We refuse to have a notion of God theologically independent of Christ. Christology is to come to an understanding of God as Christ and Christ as God. If we do not know the God that Jesus came to reveal, exclusively through the lens of Jesus, then we are in danger of adopting notions about God from areas that are inferior to the life of Christ. Leslie continues the Honorable Womanhood series with a message about what it means to entrust the pen of our life story to into God's faithful hands. During the single years, it's tempting to both idolize and idealize our marriage hopes and dreams, thinking that we'll finally be happy once we meet our future spouse. But this keeps us from finding the perfect satisfaction in Jesus Christ that He intends for us. The enemy often uses the fear of loneliness to cause us to rush ahead of God. But as this episode reminds us, when we cultivate a fully surrendered heart and let God have His way, we'll experience His very best for us. This week, it's the story of Noah's ark! But WHICH story? Is it possible that there was more than one ark narrative floating around in the sea of antiquity? If so, how did the biblical authors handle the differences? We're taking the differing (even conflicting?!) narratives two-by-two onto our ship, and seeing what we can sort out. Here's hoping it's a sufficient number of cubits long! Then, eat, drink, and be merry, because it's parable time, and if you're wealthy, this one doesn't work out so well for you. Luke chapter 12 has a bunch of stuff, but one of the prominent ones is the parable of the rich fool. What's the best way to hoard your money? Expand and diversify your portfolio? He urges that slaves show respect to their masters so that God's name and teaching will not be discredited. Paul warns against those who teach false doctrines and are motivated by pride and greed. He reminds Timothy that godliness with contentment is great gain, and that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Paul charges Timothy to flee from these worldly desires and pursue righteousness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. He is called to fight the good fight of faith and hold tightly to eternal life, for the Sovereign King is coming in glory! Paul closes by warning the wealthy to be humble, generous, and focused on eternal treasure rather than earthly riches. We are reminded that real gain is not found in possessions or status, but in godliness and contentment. We live in a world that constantly pushes us to want more, yet God calls us to be satisfied in Him. We must be careful not to let money or pride guide our choices. Instead, we should pursue what lasts: righteousness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. We are in a spiritual fight, and we must hold tightly to what is true. If we have been given much, we are called to be generous and humble. Our hope must rest not in what we can earn or own, but in a life awaiting the Lord Jesus Christ, who will rule for all eternity. Kind Father, we come to You with hearts that want to be content in You alone. Teach us to let go of our need for more and to rest in the riches of Your grace. Help us to flee from selfish desires and chase after qualities that imitate the holiness of Your Son. Strengthen us to fight the good fight and hold tightly to the eternal life You have promised. Remind us that everything we have comes from You. Make us generous, humble, and focused on what truly matters. May our hope be anchored in You, and in nothing else. Thought Questions: How far will you go to honor God's name and doctrine? Why must you accept the challenge to treat people well, no matter who they are? Why is the love of money the root of all sorts of evil? How do you protect your heart and life against discontentment, selfishness, and greed? What does it mean to “take hold of eternal life” even as you live on earth? How will you live and give if you expect Christ's return at any time?

Is Jesus your travel agent or your King? Too often, we buy into the idea of a “vacation planner Jesus”—the one who promises an easy, problem-free life. But the real Jesus doesn't guarantee comfort—He guarantees eternal joy, even through trials and suffering. In this episode, Kirk Cameron unpacks why hardships are not signs of God's absence but part of His good plan to shape us for eternity. This conversation was a wild ride through some of the most challenging questions facing progressive Christians today. Malcolm Foley—reverend, scholar, and all-around theology nerd—walked us through his journey from studying Greek church fathers to researching lynching and the Black church's witness to America. We dug into his book's central thesis that greed (not just ignorance or hate) is the root of racism, explored why Christians keep trying to serve both God and Mammon despite Jesus being pretty clear about that either/or situation, and wrestled with what it means to pursue justice with moral clarity, fierce perseverance, and nonviolent love. Malcolm challenged us on everything from our electoral anxieties to our tendency to spiritualize away material commitments, reminding us that the church is supposed to be an alternative political-economic community, not just a gathering of people who think the same things. We talked about David Walker's abolitionist fire, Ida B. Wells' relentless anti-lynching work, and MLK's theological commitment to enemy love—and why progressive Christians especially struggle with that last piece. It's the kind of conversation that makes you simultaneously want to holler "amen" and also maybe go hide because actually following Jesus is way harder than voting for the right candidate. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube Rev. Dr. Malcolm Foley earned a PhD in religion from Baylor University in December 2021. His dissertation investigated Black Protestants responding to lynching from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Before coming to Baylor, Dr. Foley earned a BA in religious studies with a second major in finance and a minor in classics from Washington University in St. Louis. He subsequently completed a Master of Divinity at Yale Divinity School, focusing on the theology of the early and medieval church. Malcolm also serves as a co-pastor at an intentionally multicultural, nondenominational church, Mosaic Waco. He is the author of The Anti-Greed Gospel: Why The Love of Money is the Root of Racism and How the Church Can Create A New Way Forward . What is it like to live with a Catholic when you are Protestant? Today, Kimberly Hahn details the immense difficulty she experienced before her conversion when her husband, Dr. Scott Hahn, became Catholic and she did not.
Read OnlineMartha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” Luke 10:40–42In many ways, this statement of our Lord summarizes the most important and central message of the Gospel. We are all called to choose “the better part” every day.Jesus was close friends with Martha, Mary and Lazarus. He frequently visited their home, which was only a short distance from Jerusalem. On this occasion, when Jesus was visiting their home, one of these siblings, Mary, had placed herself at Jesus' feet, listening to Him and conversing with Him. Martha was busy with the important details of hospitality and appeared to be upset with Mary, so she confronted Jesus, asking Him to tell Mary to help her. But in so doing, she was also unknowingly trying to dissuade Mary from the most important purpose of her life.As Mary sat at the feet of Jesus, she gave us an example of the most important focus we must have in life. Though our days will be filled with many necessary duties, such as cooking, cleaning, working, entertainment, and caring for others, we must never forget that which we were made for and that which we will be doing for all eternity: adoration of our glorious God.Consider all that occupies your day. Though most of what you do may be important, do you daily take time out to adore our Lord, listen to Him and glorify Him through your prayer? We can often make time for many other important duties in life, as well as those that are not so important. We may spend hours on chores, immerse ourselves in movies, devote whole evenings to reading, fulfill our duties in the workplace, but only devote a minute or two each day, if even that, to silent prayer and adoration of our God!What would happen to your life if you chose “the better part” for a full hour every day? What if you decided that the first hour of your day would be dedicated to an imitation of Mary in the Gospel passage and that you would do nothing but adore Jesus through silent prayer and meditation? At first, you may think of the many other tasks you could be doing at that moment. You may decide that you do not have the time for extended prayer every day. But is that true? Perhaps you are actually being Martha to yourself, saying to yourself that you should do more important things with your time and that Jesus will understand if you do not spend time with Him alone in adoration and prayer every day. If that is you, then be very attentive to this Gospel passage. In many ways, Jesus deeply desires to say this about you. He wants to say of you that you have chosen the better part for an extended period of time every day and that this will not be taken from you.Reflect, today, upon that which is most important in life. Dispel excuses and temptations to simply fulfill all the other important duties of life, neglecting that which is most important. Reflect upon the simple truth that Jesus does want you to devote much time to Him every day for silent prayer and adoration. Do not give into excuses and distractions. Commit yourself to remain at the feet of Jesus, adoring Him, listening to Him and loving Him. If you do, you will find that your life is more ordered and that the time you spend in prayer bears more good fruit than every other important duty you fulfill every day. My inviting Lord, I do believe that adoration of You in silent and devout prayer is the most important duty I have to fulfill every day. May I never be deterred from adoring You every day, devoting as much time as You desire to silent and loving prayer. May I discover this gift of prayer, dear Lord, and sit at Your feet with Mary and with all the glorious saints. Jesus, I trust in You.Image - Erasmus Quellinus II, Public domain, via Wikimedia CommonsSource of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2025 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. In September 1908 all the pressure is on Orville Wright. In August, his older brother, Wilbur, amazed the world over in Le Mans, France, demonstrating the abilities of the Wright's flying machine before a skeptical Europe. But now it's Orville's turn to show his stuff in front of skeptical America. On September 3, 1908 the pressure on Orville is nearly crushing. His task seems impossible. How can he somehow dazzle like Wilbur did in France? In many ways, we all experience this same unusual pressure when we realize that we are called to follow in the dazzling footsteps of Jesus Christ. Can it possibly be done?
