Are you getting ready to read the Bible in a year? Fr. Mike shares why it's worth following the Bible in a Year journey and how to prepare for this life-changing adventure. He explains how the reading plan works, how to build a listening habit, and how to persevere along the year when it gets tough. He reminds us that it is our "why" that ultimately shapes our "way" through the Bible. He also shares practical resources that can help us get the most out of the Bible in a Year journey. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Please note: The Bible contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Today Fr. Mike reminds us that God created us out of love, for love. Fr. Mike also points out where the Catholic Church draws her doctrine on the difference between mortal and venial sin, as well as what St. Paul means when he teaches that there is only "one mediator" between God and man. Today's readings are 1 John 4-5, 1 Timothy 1-3, and Proverbs 30: 24-28. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Please note: The Bible contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Advent E4 — We're ending our short Advent series with a reflection on love. In the Hebrew Bible, the word “ahavah” involves faithfulness to God and living by his wisdom, but it also means showing practical care to others—especially the vulnerable. Jesus views this love for God and neighbor as the greatest command, and he expands it to be indiscriminate, radical kindness and generosity even toward our enemies. The New Testament authors were so blown away by this kind of love that they adopted an obscure Greek word for love, “agape,” and redefined it to be a self-giving, sacrificial love that Jesus demonstrates in his life, teaching, death, and resurrection. In this episode, Jon and Tim explore the main biblical words for love, showing how the story of Advent characterizes agape as God's own essence and our calling. In Episode 464: The Bigfoot, The Witch, and The Dogman we are joined by Erick Szilagyi from the uNcomfortable podcast. Erick was connected to me by Joel from VanTesla, who has been a guest on Erick's show several times. Erick comes to the table with many experiences to share, but it was his experience with a witch that kicks off the show. Erick was just beginning his podcast and got connected to a witch who was willing join his show for a conversation. Erick decided to meet up with her in person to record, and that meeting turned into dinner plus more. What then ensues Erick describes as one of the most bizarre nights of his life. From Bigfoot coming close to their location, unexplainable vocalizations, unnatural hyper-sexualized tensions, to dogman guarding the witch and the witch herself physically transforming before Erick's eyes! Needless to say, he has a jaw-dropping story. Following the initial episode, we decided to do an Overtime segment for members that lasted almost three hours! Erick shares all his other experiences and they are just as bizarre as the first hour, including a story that is so personally sensitive for him that we can't speak or even hint about it publicly. Appointed by the Romans as king of Judaea, King Herod's reign was defined by great architectural projects and canny diplomacy. But he could also be cruel and paranoid, with scandal and family intrigue marring his rule. King Herod even appears as an unlikely and unlikeable character in the Christmas tale; the king who ordered the execution of children in an effort to kill Jesus. But did this really happen?Dan is joined by Seth Schwartz, professor of Classical Jewish Civilisation at Columbia University, to explore the life of this ancient king and the Hellenistic world in which he ruled.Produced by James Hickmann and edited by Dougal Patmore. This episode was first released in December 2023.Sign up to History Hit for hundreds of hours of original documentaries, with a new release every week and ad-free podcasts. John 3:16; 2 Corinthians 9:15 John 3:16 is the most familiar verse in the Bible. Many of us can recite it from memory. For millions of people, its powerful truth marked the beginning of their journey with Christ. Listen as Pastor Chuck Swindoll recounts how this verse spoke to him as a child. God loves the world—He loves you! His love is for everyone, and His call to believe in Jesus is open to all. Accept God's invitation to believe in His Son and receive His promise of eternal life.

The birth of Christ is the fulfillment of a promise made centuries before Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem. In fact, you could say that the Christmas story begins in Genesis. Find out why.
Christmas is filled with joy, traditions, music, and gatherings, but it’s easy for the true meaning of the season to get lost in the noise. While gifts, decorations, and celebrations are meaningful, Christmas is ultimately about the greatest gift ever given—Jesus Christ. Born humbly in a stable, the Messiah came to bring light into a weary world and restore us to the Father. When we intentionally tell His story, model His love, and give selflessly, we realign our hearts with the reason we celebrate. Keeping Christ at the center of Christmas requires purpose, but it leads us back to the joy and hope found only in Him. Main Takeaways You’ll learn why Christmas joy is rooted in Christ, not traditions or material gifts. Discover how telling the story of Jesus—especially in your home—keeps the season Christ-centered. Understand how generosity, hospitality, and kindness reflect the heart of the Christmas story. Reflect on how sharing Christ’s love through actions opens doors for meaningful conversations. Be encouraged to celebrate Jesus intentionally as the true source of hope, joy, and peace. Bible Verse References Luke 2:10–11 – https://www.biblestudytools.com/luke/passage/?q=luke+2:10-11 Your Daily Prayer Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible gift of Jesus, our Savior and source of lasting joy. In this busy Christmas season, help me resist distractions and keep Christ at the center of all I do. Shape my heart to reflect Your generosity, kindness, and love toward others. May my words and actions point clearly to Jesus—not only during the holidays, but in every season of life. Let His light shine through me so others may see and celebrate the true reason for Christmas.Amen. Want More? Subscribe to Your Daily Prayer for daily devotionals rooted in Scripture. They delve into the concept of heaven, discussing its emotional and relational aspects, and challenge traditional views of justice, emphasizing compassion over punishment. The conversation culminates in a discussion on how to read the Bible with an emotional perspective, highlighting the significance of storytelling in spiritual growth.TakeawaysTony's journey reflects the struggle between discipline and grace.Heaven is described as a place of emotional transparency and connection. The concept of justice in heaven is rooted in compassion, not punishment.Reading the Bible should engage both the emotional and rational brain.Jesus often used stories to connect with people's emotions. The emotional brain responds to experiences, not just concepts.Understanding the cultural context of biblical stories enhances comprehension.Compassion is a powerful force in healing and relationships.God's holiness is meant to protect, not to create social hierarchies.Transformation comes from approaching God, not from self-discipline. There's a tradition among poets to write a poem to put inside the Christmas cards they send. So, the BBC World Service has commissioned one specially from the poet, dramatist and novelist, Michael Symmons Roberts whose Christian faith is important to his identity and work. But his art is not a direct expression of this, and instead he follows the poet Emily Dickinson's instruction to ‘Tell all the truth but tell it slant'.Michael has just become a grandfather, so feels keenly the happiness of the arrival of a cherished child, creating a parallel between his own life and the Christmas story of the birth of Jesus. For In the Studio Julian May follows Michael's creative process as he grapples huge spiritual and personal themes – distilling them to a length which can fit on a Christmas card: a daunting but joyful task. The programme begins with London's Oxford Street, where consumerism triggers preparations a full three months before Christmas - and ends with the sealing of the Christmas cards before they are popped into the post box.
Join Mike and Tim as they dive into a lively discussion about the essence of family, identity, and faith. In this episode, they explore the concept of "adoption to sonship" and how it redefines our understanding of belonging and community. With humor and depth, they challenge traditional views and invite listeners to consider a broader perspective on what it means to be part of a spiritual family. Tune in for an engaging conversation that blends theology with everyday life, all wrapped in the warmth of the holiday spirit. In this conversation, the hosts explore the themes of faith, family, and community within Christianity, emphasizing the importance of understanding God as a father and the implications of adoption and sonship. They discuss the cultural context of Jesus' teachings, the role of individualism versus community, and the concept of loyalty to God's family. The conversation also touches on the distinction between bounded and centered sets in faith, ultimately inviting listeners to engage in a communal journey of faith. Takeaways: Christian nationalism is alive and well. Father is a status word, not a gender word. To be a part of Jesus is to be a part of his people. Jesus is not your personal savior. We're playing soccer, not rugby. The early Christians did not sharply distinguish between commitment to God and commitment to God's family. Salvation is a social reunification. You cannot be a part of two groups. Loyalty to God is loyalty to God's people. We are playing soccer, not rugby. Was Jesus really an illegal immigrant, or is that a modern political slogan forced onto the Christmas story? In this LIVE FREE Christmas episode, Pastors Josh Howerton, Carlos Erazo, and Paul Cunningham have an honest, thought-provoking conversation that goes beyond the traditional nativity story, uncovering surprising historical and biblical insights like a Roman coin tied to the word Advent, why the opening of John's Gospel reads like a “new beginning,” and why Jesus was mistaken for a gardener after the resurrection. They also address common questions skeptics ask: why Jesus' family tree looks different in the Gospels. The episode wraps with a candid discussion about leadership, politics, and why no political figure, left or right, should ever take the place of Jesus.

When my friend Maritza took a job that required traveling to many different cities by herself, she often felt lonely. But over dinner one night, she leaned in and told me, “Jen, I prayed and asked God to send me His people.” She went on to say it wasn’t long before she’d begun to meet other believers in Jesus on a regular basis. Once, she met three in one day! When we encounter others who have faith in Jesus, we share a spiritual connection. In a hard-to-explain way, this lights a spark within us. We have the most important thing in common because we believe what the Bible says about Christ and how it’s possible to have a relationship with God through Him (Romans 10:9). Most importantly, the Spirit of God lives in each believer, knitting us together so powerfully that the Bible compares us to the interconnected parts of the human body. 1 Corinthians 12:13 says, “We were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body”—the body of Christ. God often works in our lives through others who love Him, whether they’re near or far, known, or new acquaintances. In our loneliest times, we can ask Him to send His people—even as we offer ourselves to be used by Him to encourage others.

Questions about what will happen to those who never heard of Jesus or were brought up in a different faith, whether there's biblical warrant to think a humble, repentant attitude can save people who don't know Jesus, and where the souls who lived before Jesus go. We're taught that the only way to Heaven is through belief in Jesus, but what about those living on this planet who never heard of him, those brought up in another faith, or those of a Jewish faith? Is there any biblical warrant for thinking that those who haven't heard of Jesus will nevertheless be saved due to a humble, repentant attitude? Where do the souls who lived before Jesus go since they couldn't be baptized or saved?

Sophia Holcomb joins Michael Horton, Justin Holcomb, Walter Strickland, and Bob Hiller to explore how C. S. Lewis portrays a theology of creation, sin, redemption, sanctification, and new creation throughout The Chronicles of Narnia. From Aslan's creation song and the White Witch's curse to Aslan's substitutionary death and final restoration in The Last Battle, they trace how Lewis communicates the gospel through his most well-known books. Jesus is the reason for the season...right? Eh, not really. I'll break down the Roman festivals, Pagan rituals, and Victorian branding that turned sex-drenched slave parties, serial killers and a vengeful saint into the Christmas we know today—from Christmas trees to Santa Claus.Plus, why exactly Jesus' message made such an impression on the blood-loving Romans!Thank you for listening to the first season of Crowned & Cancelled! What if the greatest gift of Christmas isn't something you give or receive—but the One you choose to bow down to? The Magi traveled nearly 800 miles on little more than a prophecy and a star, believing that if the promised King had truly come, He was worth seeking at all costs. In Week 3 of Real Men of Christmas, we look at these wise men—not for their crowns or status, but for their posture. While Herod clung tightly to his own throne and the religious leaders stayed comfortable in tradition, the Magi refused to miss Jesus. They followed God's prompting, bowed before the true King, and opened their treasures in extravagant worship. Pastor Joby unpacks why their response still matters today: because every one of us approaches Jesus like Herod, the religious leaders, or the Magi. And the gifts we bring reveal what we believe about Him—our King, our Christ, our Savior. As we celebrate Christmas and partner with Compassion International to love “the least of these,” this message invites us to examine our hearts, our worship, and the direction of our lives. What gift will you bring to Jesus this Christmas—and which direction will He lead you next?

One of the most intriguing elements of the Christmas story is that of the wise men, who see a mysterious star and set out on a journey that ultimately leads them to worship Jesus. In this week's message from Matthew 2, Pastor J.D. gives us a snapshot of various responses to the birth of Jesus, all of which are still seen in different degrees today. Just as God used a sign to lead the wise men to the Savior, he continues to meet us where we are and draw us to himself. The only question is if we will respond to Jesus' birth as the wise men did, with joy upon joy upon joy.
Chapter 18 of Heroes in the Bible: Jesus is inspired by the Gospels. It is Finished - In a final act of defiance against death, Jesus marches up to the place of the skull. This is the climax of all history, the focal point of scripture, and the ultimate blessing of mankind. Pastor John Elmore reminded the church to grasp the gravity of Christmas, that Jesus, fully God and fully man, humbled Himself to come for us. He called listeners to receive Christ as the servant who willingly came to die and save sinners. Finally, he challenged believers to live transformed lives that glorify Jesus in everything we do and offering back to Him all that He has first given us. Do you grasp the gravity of Christ?Have you received the gift of Christ? How will your life glorify Christ? Life Group Discussion:What practices or rhythms help you slow down and truly reflect on the significance of the incarnation? Is there anything that makes it hard for you to ask Jesus for help or surrender control to Him?This week, what is one practical way you can “play your best for Him” in your everyday life?
Msgr. Esseff reflects on Mary as the faithful woman prepared from all ages to receive the Word made flesh. Through her obedience, God enters human history in a new and intimate way. The Incarnation is presented not only as an event in the past, but as a living reality that continues through those united to Christ. Drawing from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans, Msgr. Esseff speaks about incorporation into Christ through baptism and the call to live as Christ in the world today. The post The 4th Sunday of Advent – Building a Kingdom of Love with Msgr.
