Appearing in Public Administration Review, Prof. Evan Berman wrote a piece entitled “Dealing With Cynical Citizens” stating “widespread concern exists about public cynicism toward government.” And that “manifestations of public cynicism include pervasive believe that government policies and public officials are corrupt, inept, or out to take advantage of citizens.” Addressing the myriad challenges faced by any city leader, and balancing sometimes conflicting interests of diverse constituencies, CivitasLA is joined for its 50th episode by Los Angeles City Council President Pro Tem Mitch O'Farrell. Representing over 250,000 residents of the 13th District, O'Farrell has engaged citizens across one of the most diverse districts in this region. Distinct communities within the district includes the neighborhoods of Atwater Village, East Hollywood, Echo Park, Elysian Valley, Glassell Park, Historic Filipinotown, Hollywood, Mid-Wilshire/Koreatown, Rampart Village, and Silver Lake. As shared by one of his former colleagues, “There is no one I can think of who is more committed to his district.” Sharing his own perspective on governance and representation, the Councilmember has stated “I am committed to being a resource for any and all without judgment. That's my philosophy on public service and constituent service.” To learn more about the work of Councilmember O'Farrell and his team's efforts to improve the quality of life in their district, please visit: https://cd13.lacity.org/about And for more information about CivitasLA, please visit www.CivitasLA.com and we hope you'll rate and review our show; and connect with us on Facebook (@CivitasLA), Instagram (@Civitas_LA) and Twitter (@Civitas_LA).

LA's newest home for comedy, especially the kind that colors outside the lines, The Elysian, is officially alive. We have artistic director Kate Banford join us for this week's TCB Field Report to give us the origin stories of both herself (her first theater in Philadelphia, The Good Good Comedy Theatre) and this shiny new theater (and even explain why they went with a skunk for a logo). Banford has long since done and championed comedy that pushes the art form forward and, with so many LA venues closed over the last two years, it's a saving grace that Kate and company have come in with The Elysian in Frogtown (or more formally known, but never referred to as Elysian Valley). Also, "hot" takes on Vulture's Comedians You Should & Will Know list, Dan and Eugene Levy's lifestyle series, and the new Charlie Chaplin doc on Showtime.Find Kate @katebanford on IG and @kbanf on Twitter at and The Elysian at elysiantheater.com and on IG and Twitter @elysiantheaterThe Comedy Bureau @thecomedybureau across platforms and please, please support TCB via GoFundMe, Patreon, or on Venmo (@jakekroeger).Produced by Jake KroegerMusic by Brian GranilloArtwork by Andrew Delman and KTSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

There is so much happening with comedians that are trans that has nothing to do with Dave Chappelle. This week's guest, the splendid Jeena Bloom, is proof positive that there is much to be celebrated and enjoyed with the comedic stylings of many trans men and women just like comedians of any other background. That includes stand-up, TV, movies, podcasts, etc. as well as thorough discussion of local neighborhoods in LA and NYC (neighborhood maps per the podcast conversation linked below). Also, "hot" takes on Mel Brooks' History of the World Part 2, Tarantino thinking about doing a comedy, and, oh yeah, that Chappelle mess over at Netflix (NOTE: this podcast was recorded on 10/19/21, the day before the #NetflixWalkout).Follow Jeena @jeenabloom on Twitter and IGFor reference, as promised, here are neighborhood maps of LA (Frogtown is denoted as Elysian Valley for some reason) and NYCThe Comedy Bureau @thecomedybureau across platforms and please, please support TCB via GoFundMe, Patreon, or on Venmo (@jakekroeger).Produced by Jake KroegerMusic by Brian GranilloArtwork by Andrew Delman and KTSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

What happens when you combine a café with a "Melrose Ave" style menu and a "Downtown LA" vibe, along with one-of-a-kind coffee and a rad bike shop? You get Spoke Bicycle Café in Elysian Valley (aka Frogtown). Rich Latronica and Laurie Winston are on the show to tell us how they started Spoke with a foldout table and an Aeropress and turned it into an incredible café in an amazing location (and did we mention there's a bike shop?!). Plus, they are the only coffee shop that offers TRYSTERO COFFEE, one of LA's top roasters that until recently, was roasted from owner/roaster Greg Thomas' garage. There's a reason they call him a "coffee wizard". And we also take a few minutes to talk about our long week. Myles buries his son under the groceries. Jason talks about a few "firsts", including a close call by some bold birds! Spoke is right on the LA River bike path, and you can ride, walk or drive there. Whichever you choose, you won't be disappointed. So, grab a cup and join us for a great ride! Our penultimate Mini-Session interview from 'Next Up: The LA River' pairs Renee Dake Wilson with Alexander Robinson. Dake Wilson, principal at Dake Wilson Architects, was appointed by LA Mayor Eric Garcetti to serve as Vice President on the city's volunteer-based Planning Commission—an array of professionals who make recommendations between communities and the city on planning projects. On the commission, she's worked particularly with proposals to change the height and density limits on development in Elysian Valley, aka Frogtown—the neighborhood along the LA River that has become a major node in the city's ongoing gentrification discussion. Robinson, while teaching at USC as an assistant professor, runs the Office of Outdoor Research and just recently completed a term as a Rome Prize recipient, researching the Tiber River as it relates to LA's and other cities' river infrastructures. He has also previously worked with Mia Lehrer's office on LA River projects.

For this Mini-Session from our Next Up: The LA River event, Nicholas Korody spoke with Julia Meltzer, director and founder of non-profit arts organization, Clockshop, and Elizabeth Timme, co-director of the urban design and architecture non-profit LA-Más. Both Clockshop and LA-Más are located within Elysian Valley, aka Frogtown—a sliver of a neighborhood bordered by the LA River, the 5 and the 2 freeways. In recent years, Frogtown (predominantly a low-density neighborhood of single-family homes) has become a major focus in LA conversations about gentrification and development, and both Timme's and Meltzer's work is heavily invested in their context. Clockshop (in collaboration with California State Parks) has its HQ in Frogtown and hosts art events in the Bowtie, an undeveloped plot of land along the river. In 2015, LA-Más led a community "co-visioning process" (the 'Futuro de Frogtown') to determine the kind of development decisions residents were concerned about. Nicholas Korody spoke with both Timme and Meltzer about issues of equitable-design and place-making along the river, and the role of art within a master redevelopment plan.

Growing up in North East Los Angeles wasn't easy for our guest, Karina Rain.  Raised by her grandmother from the ripe age of five, she lost her mother to Multiple Sclerosis and had an abusive father who she lost last year from Multiple Myeloma Cancer.  As a teenager she became rebellious and self-destructive, experimenting with drugs and running away from her home in Elysian Valley.  She was homeless by age 15 and stuck in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend at the time.  But after turning 18 she had enough and decided that that life wasn't for her; her perspective on life had changed and she got a job, went back to school and started the difficult process of reinventing herself and turning her life around - and she did just that. Karina is now an activist, a writer for Urban Native Magazine and she has her very own YouTube channel where she seeks to share her story with the world and help others who might be going through tough times in their lives.  She is also very active in the Native American community, educating others on Native American culture, stereotypes, and the plight they still face today. Before we began recording this podcast she thanked us for inviting her to be on the show, but we want to thank her for sharing her story with us so we could get to know a little more about this beautiful soul, Karina Rain.
