Our guest today is Steve Miller, a good friend and writer for TV and film in Hollywood for over 25 years. Steve and his wife live in Toluca Lake, a Los Angeles neighborhood just north of East Hollywood. They have watched the glow and flames in the sky since the fire started and have been prepared to evacuate should orders be issued. This is a soaring interview in which Steve, Peter, and Ginger take off from the Los Angeles fires to look at the growing power of predatory globalism in the world. From the destruction of LA to the destruction of America itself, their analysis connects the most personal tragedies to the schemes of the globalists. I'm running a high-energy speaker training event, and everyone is buzzing with excitement as we stand in a circle, introducing ourselves. Each attendee shares their role and a fun fact. Among them is a CEO of a tech company who loves bagels, a marketing director obsessed with villas in Rome, and an entrepreneur who just secured his first round of funding. The introductions continue, one after another, until it's time for my team to introduce themselves. Our first team member steps forward and says, “Hi, I'm Sandy Zabarsky. I've spent the last 27 years in prison and just got out.” The room falls silent. I can feel the weight of all eyes on me, then shifting to each other, and back to me. Sandy continues, “I served as an educator and administrator in juvenile halls and juvenile camps. Today, I'm here to help turn your challenges into stories your audience will never forget.” A collective breath is released from the room. You see, Sandy happens to be my mom. She was an English major and dedicated her career to helping the underdog–particularly disadvantaged youth entangled in the criminal justice system. She assisted these kids in earning their GED, offering them a glimmer of hope and a chance at a different story. Throughout her career, my mom impacted the lives of thousands of kids. Her unwavering commitment to changing their narrative and giving them a new possibility transformed their futures, making them very different from the ones they had while inside the system. There are so many like my mom out there, including my special guest Alfonso Paz. He brings to life a different possibility for the people he works with whether they're students, educators, or business owners. As part of the nonprofit TIYAA Foundation, Flavors From Afar also hosts a culinary training program for folks from all over the globe who are new to this city. Consisting of migrants and refugees resettling in L.A. and looking for work, it's an 8 week training program designed to teach aspiring chefs everything from knife skills to applying for licenses. Their homemade take on Nashville Hot Chicken was an overnight sensation in a city that had barely heard of it, and within days, co-founder Arman Oganesyan and his partners were working frantically to serve the long lines out front. The company was founded in East Hollywood in 2009 and has grown to include four shops in Southern California and two in Atlanta. She is also known for starring as Private Vasquez in the sci-fi horror film Aliens (1986), which won her the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. But what are here this week to celebrate her journey from successful actress to female entrepreneur – and the mountains she has climbed in-between. HOW IT STARTED: For Jenette, this whole story may have started at age 12, when she visited the local “bra lady” with her mother, near a kosher butcher. This was mortifying, but her visits to mall stores were even worse. The fits were abysmal; either the cups were too small, or the band slipped down to her waist. The problem continued plaguing her throughout her life. With a 32 G bra size, describing herself as “small framed” yet “busty,” she grew increasingly frustrated. But then, purely by divine intervention, she was in London and found a store servicing “girls that have a small ribcage and a fuller bust.” This experience literally changed her life, because this type of service and women's undergarments in untypical sizes did not exist in the United States. Fastforward to somewhere around the time in her 40s, when she found acting jobs becoming scarce, because Hollywood sucks for women. So, with no business experience, she and her artist husband decided to fill the missing gap in women's bra sizes and options by opening their first Jenette Bras boutique in LA. She has since gone from launching a new career, a new company, expanding her brick-and-mortar stores, weathering the shutdown of COVID in the retail sector - and defying ageism – to become THE EXPERT in women's foundation wear. HOW TO BUY A BRA THAT FITS: The Importance of Bra Comfort & Self-Acceptance A bra is the most technical piece of clothing to produce. You can compare it to a men's tailored suit and or a finely made pair of shoes. A bra must do the work. For instance, a skirt doesn't have to lift you, it can just look beautiful. The arch of a shoe must do the work: if it does support your arch, your whole body is affected. The job of a bra is incredibly complicated. It must give comfort, support, and create a beautiful profile. Therefore, the research and development of making this item of clothing is intense. “The price is not luxury pricing, it's quality pricing.” A bra is intimate. It is a beautiful piece of clothing. It's what you put on the first thing in the morning, and it should make you feel beautiful (as well as fit well, be comfortable and create a gorgeous silhouette). That is your secret power. This is your blueprint for getting dressed. This is the foundation of building a great outfit. Creating an outfit and feeling beautiful takes practice. And you really must start with the undergarments that support your body and give you the confidence that you need to feel fabulous in your clothes. Everyone has what they call “problem areas,” or parts of the body they are self-conscious about. But this should not bring shame or embarrassment. You have the power to reshape or support those areas so that you have the kind of confidence that makes you shine from within. Confidence is key. Born and raised in South Louisiana, Chef Craig was inspired by his family meals and his grandmother's cooking. His heart and soul are Southern, which transcends into his cooking. After working in some of the world's most renowned restaurants, opening two of his own restaurants in Louisiana, and honing recipes as a private chef, Chef Craig and his wife Kristen moved to Southern California. They began feeding their friends and neighbors from their home kitchen when the pandemic hit. By the end of COVID, they were turning out more than 80 meals per day. The most popular meal was his fried chicken, inspired by his Southern roots and first made famous by Chef Craig in Aspen at the 7908 Supper Club. The idea to open a fast-casual restaurant devoted to his popular fried chicken took on a life of its own, and Le Coupé was born. The name for Le Coupé in French translates to "The Cut." The cut of Chef Craig's fried chicken thigh makes his chicken unique. He uses a technique that frenches the bone of the thigh while keeping the meat intact, allowing for a unique flavor profile and presentation. The name is also a nod to being all cooped up during the quarantine. Le Coupé has become a local sensation in the burgeoning Melrose Hill area of Los Angeles. This husband-and-wife operation was named the best fried chicken sandwich in California by Yelp -- and everyone who tries it! A transracial adoptee, Liz was born in South Korea and grew up in DC before attending Washington University in St. Louis, MO. After graduating, Liz moved to Oakland, California, where she served as an AmeriCorps teacher with Girls Inc. and Super Stars Literacy for two years. Following her service, Liz moved to Los Angeles, where she attended UCLA's Teacher Education Program, where she earned her M.Ed. After spending a year student teaching a 5th grade class in Watts, Liz joined the founding faculty of a startup school in East Hollywood where she spent seven years teaching 1st through 4th grades. In 2020, Liz returned to her DC roots and taught 6th grade before embarking on a new role as an elementary school librarian and working in her school's office of equity and inclusion. In addition to classroom teaching, Liz also works as an antibias antiracist facilitator for schools, organizations, and companies across the country. Her work has gained national recognition through a documentary short produced by Fluid Film, and media outlets such as CNN, The Washington Post, NPR, and BBC. In 2018, Liz received Learning for Justice's Award for Excellence in Teaching, and served on the organization's Advisory Board. Liz is proud to share her 2019 TED Talk from "Education Everywhere" on building foundations of equity with young learners, and the release of her first book, Start Here Start Now: A Guide to Antibias and Antiracist Work In Your School Community with Heinemann Publishing. Nonprofit Watchdog Uncovers $350 Million in Secret Payments to Fauci, Collins, Others at NIH An estimated $350 million in undisclosed royalties were paid to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and hundreds of its scientists, including the agency's recently departed director, Dr. Francis Collins, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, according to a nonprofit government watchdog. “We estimate that up to $350 million in royalties from third parties were paid to NIH scientists during the fiscal years between 2010 and 2020,” Open the Books CEO Adam Andrzejewski told reporters in a telephone news conference on May 9. “We draw that conclusion because, in the first five years, there has been $134 million that we have been able to quantify of top-line numbers that flowed from third-party payers, meaning pharmaceutical companies or other payers, to NIH scientists.” The first five years, from 2010 to 2014, constitute 40 percent of the total, he said. “We now know that there are 1,675 scientists that received payments during that period, at least one payment. In fiscal year 2014, for instance, $36 million was paid out and that is on average $21,100 per scientist,” Andrzejewski said. “We also find that during this period, leadership at NIH was involved in receiving third-party payments. For instance, Francis Collins, the immediate past director of NIH, received 14 payments.
