Balance in board games is one of those much-talked-about topics that keeps cropping up. Some people want games to be perfectly balanced, so that players' only advantage comes from their skill and hours of practice and graft. Others relish highly unbalanced games, where it's nigh-impossible to win, but when you do win, it feels amazing. Yet, balance in board games is much more complex and subtle than that. In this article, I want to look at the role that balance plays in board game design.Read the full article here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/12/02/losing-balance-the-role-of-balance-in-board-games-topic-discussion/Useful LinksCosmic Encounter Board Game Geek page: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/39463/cosmic-encounterVotes for Women review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2024/02/10/votes-for-women-digital-eyes/Godzilla: Tokyo Clash review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/08/09/godzilla-tokyo-clash-saturday-review/Pandemic review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2020/01/18/pandemic-saturday-review/Root review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2022/02/12/root-a-game-of-woodland-might-and-right-saturday-review/[1] Cole Wehrle interview on balancing powerful positions with strategic liabilities, Elevation Games, https://www.elevation.games/blog/interview-with-cole-wehrle-designer-of-root-john-company-and-pax-pamirOath review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2021/11/27/oath-chronicles-of-empire-and-exile-saturday-review/[2] Cole Wehrle interview on emergent asymmetry in Oath, Tabletop Gaming, https://www.tabletopgaming.co.uk/features/oath-an-interview-with-cole-wehrle/Doubt is our Product Board Game Geek page: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/401361/doubt-is-our-productMusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Music: Relaxing Lofi - Ena, produced by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/12224-relaxing-lofi-enaMusic: Relaxing Lofi - Dyo, produced by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/12225-relaxing-lofi-dyoSupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/(Photo by Austin Neill on Unsplash)

Jamie and Don, freshly back from PAX Unplugged 2025 in Philadelphia, have been getting into some board, card, and dice rumbles lately, and they wanted to dig into the many styles of combat systems in board games. Deterministic versus random, complex versus streamlined, dice versus cards - there's a lot of ground to cover. Also, our yearly fundraiser is currently running on Kickstarter! Welcome Ye Gods of War! After a long and silent campaign upon the ashes of hiatus, the Filthy Casuals return to the field to speak of sacred miniatures and the art of battle! Jamie discusses his grand campaign of WWII miniatures, Mike confesses his love of G.I. Joe, and together they revel in the primal glory of painting apes wielding instruments of death. But soon, the vox crackles with the true call to arms - Adeptus Titanicus! AC reveals the saga of his three-year endeavor, Bender delivers the lore-rites of the God-Engines, and together we debate the might, majesty, and madness of this massively complex, ruinously expensive, and gloriously indulgent game of Titan warfare. For the Machine God, for the Omnissiah, - the Filthy Casuals march once more!
Real life friend, 7x podcast guest, and multi-award winning author Eden Royce joins me from England as we get to catch up, talk her latest works, and more! We start things off by talking about her latest book, Psychopomp & Circumstance. It's her first published work geared towards adults. Billed as a historical southern gothic fantasy, we talk about how this book came about. From her writing process for adults vs children, the themes of the books, the characters, and the setting. I won an ARC, so I was able to read it a few months ago and there are certain scenes that still stick with me from this book. We also talk about some of her previously published works. Then, Eden talks about her latest announcement. Eden is co-writing a horror/thriller anime called Webe: Spirit Detective under the production company, N LITE, and being executive producerd by Jaden and Willow Smith. Eden talks about how she was found specifically for this movie, the work and how its different than writing her novels and short stories, and what this may lead to for the future. Eden and I talk about which works of hers may she'd love to see get translated for the visual medium. We wrap things up by talking about what she's working on currently or planning for the future!
