The conversation sizzles between their acclaimed NZ reunion tour, making a record in New Jersey and the origins of the almighty tutu tapes. There's plenty of hot bass talk and we discuss Bleeders' reinterpretation of their hit song "All That Glitters" into the inspiring te reo Māori waiata "Tahuna Te Ao Mārama".

DEEP DIVE - On this episode we talk about probably one of the most contentious topics of our time, and as far as conspiracies go, it's having a very real and measured effect on the health of the human race. We discuss the history and the kooky science behind the anti-vaccination debate.Vaccinations have been an important part of the survival of the human race and in the last 100 years, with the improvements in medical technology, life spans and standards of living have increased exponentially. But recently people have been questioning the legitimacy of vaccinations and even go so far as to question the integrity of organisations like the CDC, claiming many conspiracy level motives such as sterilisation and population control; widespread autism and other neurological maladies; and even something as benign as greedy business practices. This may not be what you are looking for in a conspiracy podcast about vaccinations so tread carefully, but what you will get is a look into the history of vaccines; claims about their negative effects like Autism; and a look at the man and the work that began this insidious doubt, Andrew Wakefield and his now infamous paper from the Lancet.Im joined by Neil Rochford (http://www.twitter.com/neilrochford) and Gareth Stack (http://www.twitter.com/garethstack) for this rollercoaster and over an hour of outtakes will be available at patreon.com/thoseconspiracyguys________________________This podcast is supported by the generous donations of the wonderful folks over at Patreon. On this episode of Why Press Play we dust off the martini glasses and put on our patent leather shoes for a night on the town with the finest New York beaus and debutantes in a weird movie from director Whit Stilman and graciously shown to me by Gareth Stack called Metropolitan from 1990.In a nebulous time somewhere between 1950 and 1990 a loosely affiliated group of new rich haute bourgeoise calling themselves a 'Rat Pack' of sorts, are flitting from after-party to after-party in the New York Debutante Ball scene at Christmas time. Its a weird film that showcases the strange and unapproachable personalities of these seemingly disconnected rich kids in their late teens and early twenties. It does have its charms however and as the movie opens up from an impenetrable web of political and high art references into a story about what teens want to really talk about, sex and love. The relationships bloom over the Christmas season and when drugs and alcohol are involved it becomes all the more dramatic. Yes this is a weird film, but by the end I really liked it and Im sure you will too! Dont chalk it down to be a Christmas movie (technically its the first of the very loose Christmas movie season on WPP) but it does have wonderfully shot scenes in oppulent apartments in the Upper West Side of New York, decor very few of us will see in real life! MAIN EPISODEOn this episode we talk about one of the darkest patches on US history and a pan-atlantic collusion that could have been the driving force behind the global actions of military, scientific and political powers for the last 70 years, Operation Paperclip. In the last days of WW2 the Nazi elite were wondering what their future would look like. Impending trials for war crimes would definitely be a possibility; and some took the opportunity by pawning their military and scientific knowledge in exchange for freedom and exclusion from prosecution in Nuremberg.Operation Overcast and later Operation Paperclip was the US intelligence services plan to gain as much Nazi engineering, military, scientific and espionage intelligence they could before the Russians. Flocks of now ex-Nazis with no fuhrer to guide them, ran into the arms of the waiting US and Russian soldiers on both sides of Germany. They were interviewed and spilled all the info for a chance to be installed into US military intelligence, and in some cases, get to stay living in Germany spying on the USSR from their own home town. The US has had a shady history at the best of times, but harbouring Nazis and cooperating with them as they greatly advance the space program, increase military might, give intel and previous files owned by the SS to the US intelligence community and eventually become revered members of western society, made a lot of people suspicious of the motives of these ex-Nazis. Names like Wernher Von Braun, Josef Mengele, Arthur Rudolph and Klaud Barbie are just a couple of the 1600 scientists brought to the states for their knowledge. But on this episode we argue the ethics of sucha an information acquisition, how the scientific experiments done on prisoners of war can be not only flawed but just cruel torture; and the collusion of huge respected organisation to smuggle uninterred Nazis out of Germany to escape prosecution in a program known as the Ratlines. This week, I play Episode One of Gareth Stack's startling psychological thriller, "The Wall in the Mind". It's the tale of a city split down the middle, and a woman whose life split with it. Claire O'Hanlon was a young woman in 1989 --an Irish national on the Eastern side of the Berlin Wall--when she was arrested by the Stasi, the East German secret police. After months of imprisonment and interrogation, Claire was set free, only to find the world had changed; the Wall had come down, and her lover, Emil Reichmann, had disappeared. In the present day, Claire returns to Berlin when she receives a mysterious cassette tape: a recording from her youth.Following the episode, I'll talk to the writer, director, and producer of "The Wall in the Mind", Gareth Stack. We discuss love, loss, sanity, and the surveillance state. It's a conversation not to be missed!

Some fantastic radio comedy from the Emerald Isle this week! Gareth Stack, founder of "Dead Medium" productions, based in Dublin, tells the story of Ainesh, an under confident, over intellectual Indian-Irish twenty something.Ainesh has always been a victim of circumstance; working jobs he didn’t enjoy and failing to live up to his potential. Now, sacked from his factory job and thrown out of home by his disappointed parents, Ainesh is forced to train as a psychotherapist. His course is in ‘Choosing Therapy’, the philosophy that we choose our own destiny, and that everything that happens is our fault. With nowhere to stay, Ainesh is forced to live with two of his bizarre classmates. We follow him as he learns whether there really is such a thing as choice, and if so, how he can make his own destiny.Dig in!The post Episode 402 – Gareth Stack’s “Choices” appeared first on Radio Drama Revival.
