Like many musicians, Kerry started singing and performing when he was a kid in church. At age 7 he was singing solos in front of the entire congregation. Then came piano lessons to learn to read and write music. He really loved to sing though, so he concentrated on his vocals. He performed all throughout his school years, all the way up through college at George Mason University. The West Coast was calling him so in 1988 on a wing and a prayer he heads out to L.A.!! He settles in and meets some great musicians and starts to perform out there, singing in some experimental Rock bands like Acid Clown. In 1991 he came up with the concept of The Thrillbillyz and, along with the help of some great musician friends, was able to record a four song demo at Fox Studios in Glendale, CA and work with the owner/engineer Rich Fox. In 1993 ,after several years of performing around Southern California as The Thrillbillyz, Hurley moves back to the East Coast and his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia. Roanoke definitely is not as big of a market as L.A. but it has a growing music scene and Hurley jumps in head first. He re-forms The Thrillbillyz and starts playing shows like crazy. He continues to write and work on his originals and in 1994 takes his band into Flat Five Studios in Salem, VA and records the album “Romp!” and releases it in 1995. Ten of the eleven songs are originals and a few of the songs (Franklin County Moonshine & Sweet Leaf) wind up on the radio in regular rotation on the area's biggest Rock station 96.3 WROV. The band played constantly in support of it's record and through it's association with Buzz Casey and WROV was able to open up for quite a few National acts like Government Mule, Storyville, Foghat, Loverboy, Johnny Winter, Matchbox 20 and many more!!! The band played and enjoyed success for the next 5 years and in 2000 everyone went their own musical ways. Hurley had been singing on the side for a Blues band called Blues Hangover from 96 to 98 and traveled quite a bit with them, winning several Blues Contests and traveling to Memphis, TN in 97 to compete in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge. It was a great learning experience. In 2001 Hurley wound up joining The Fat Daddy Band and that very same year went down and won the Charlotte Blues Society's contest and in 2002 went to Memphis again to represent them at the IBC and made it to the finals (one of ten bands out of 150). For the next 14 years he would front that band and continue to write songs. He put out 2 cd's with The Fat Daddy Band - “From The Soul”(2003) and “Live & Lovin' It!”(2005).

We had the chance to catch up with Mike Wheeler. We talked about letting the songwriting process happen organically, the therapeutic aspect of songwriting, and music as an all-inlifestyle. We also visited a little bit about Bertha Grateful Drag that he plays with. Mike Wheeler is a singer-songwriter originally hailing from Vermont. I ran my familiar coastal five-miler, feeling the cold air ease as I warm up. The sidewalks and side streets were damp with melting frost, and the ocean breeze pushed against me as I hit my stride. Afterward, I will gear up my e-bike with big panniers and a bow saw to forage for free firewood. Pedaling through quiet streets, I will scan for fallen branches and cut logs to haul back home. The day will be a steady rhythm of running, riding, and preparing for the week ahead.
On Sunday morning, I got a ride with Norma and Zaryn as Zaryn is headed to the airport to fly to England to visit his boyfriend, Jack. It was frosty and below zero, so I dressed warmly for my run through Pondwood and the Bog, stopping often to take photos of the frosted landscape. While running, I reflected on Zaryn's trip, conversations about early computer games using magnetic tape, and my brewing process for a new batch of beer. As I approached the meadows near Mount Douglas, I realized I was close to meeting my calorie-burning goal, wrapping up my frosty morning adventure.

Sometimes I forget just how many classes I took on the history of cinema — or that I used to teach a class on it! — but then I have a conversation like the one you're about to listen to and remember: oh right, I am a huge film history dork. This episode, featuring the brilliant Hannah McGregor, travels all over the past, present, and future of the blockbuster, from the theory of the “whammy,” to Hannah's book on Jurassic Park, from Barbie to Twisters, from why we started going to the movies to why we've (largely) stopped. It's a ROMP and incredibly listenable — perfect for wherever you're driving or to have on in the background while you chop one million brussels sprouts.Join the ranks of paid subscribers and get bonus content, access to the discussion threads, ad-free episodes, and the knowledge that you're supporting an indie pod trying to make its way in the world. Send us a text... Another Big 12 road game, another CU blowout win. A three-point underdog against Arizona, the Buffs started fast, and never looked back in a 34-7 romp over the Wildcats. Don't look now, but CU is 5-2, one win away from a bowl game for Peggy. I am pleased to be joined for this review/preview episode by Brad Geiger and Neil Langland, and we will be giving you our “T.I.P.S.”, our preview for CU's Family Weekend “Blackout” game against Cincinnati. Before we do our preview, though, we will be taking a few minutes to give you our review of the blowout win in Tucson over Arizona. We will be discussing “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”, with, as you might imagine, a fair amount of time spent on “The Good”. Then, we will move on to the Bearcats of Cincinnati. Our format is to give you our “T.I.P.S.” for the game, broken down into categories:T- Talent - What CU's opponents are bringing to the game; which matchups may prove crucial; I - Intangibles - What off the field issues may impact the outcome; P - Preparation/Schedule - How the calendar and the weather may play a role; andS - Statistics - Which numbers should Buff fans be on the lookout for in determining the outcome. After going through our preview, we will each give you our predictions for the game. So ... Will Cincinnati's offense, with a balanced attack and a mobile quarterback, be able to keep the ball away from the CU offense, frustrating the Buffs? ... Will CU's offense, going up against a Bearcat defense giving up less than 20 points a game, be able to take advantage of opportunities to score? ... Will the Buffs, late on Saturday night, become bowl-eligible in October for the first time since 2016? ... Let's find out ... Support the show
It's a glorious Sunday when all three phases of a football team are working together and doing their part to get the win. That's what the Seattle Seahawks got this past Sunday as the offense, defense and special teams all contributed in a major way to help route the 1st-place Atlanta Falcons 34-14, putting themselves back in first place. The third miserable loss in a row for the Seahawks and to their biggest rival at that.
