We're chatting about The Imposter Syndrome! And then that bleeds over naturally to the Dunning Kruger effect… Have you ever experienced imposter syndrome in your comicing or professional life? I think it's one of those things that we all have at one time or another. It's the feeling of "I don't belong", "people are relying on me and I really don't know what I'm doing", "they're going to find out I've been a fraud all along!". When it comes to comics in my case it usually happens after I've just posted a new page, I go from feeling like being at the top of the world to a total fraud and a hack who's not worthy to have their comics seen. The way this bleeds into the Dunning Kruger effect is the healthier side of the imposer syndrome… when you're not feeling like a fraud but rather you're aware that you don't know it all - you know your stuff is ok, it could be better, and that's fine. What is Dunning Kruger effect? It's and informal behaviour pattern that we all tend to gravitate towards: When you don't know anything at all about a subject you're aware of that lack of knowledge, but when you know a tiny bit about the subject you overestimate your knowledge and think you know all there is to know, however when you actually become an expert on the subject then you think that you know less about it than you do because you know how much more there IS to know. Also, there's a balance in the middle where you know exactly how much you know. People wrongly think that only idiots are subject to Dunning Kruger, but the truth is that its universal because we're ALL experts at a few things and novices at a billion other things: from artists, to astronomers, to janitors, to footballers, to street-sweepers. Examples of highly qualified people in particular fields saying moronic things about other fields are legion: two time Nobel Prize winner Dr Linus Pauling came up with the stupid idea that vitamin C cures everything and he's the reason why it's STILL touted as being at all good for colds; theoretical Physicist Avi Loeb promotes the idiotic idea that various extra-solar comets are alien spaceships; former doctor, Andrew Wakefield famously promotes crazed anti-vax conspiracy theories… Actual experts in things are experts for a reason. It's important to have an idea of what you don't know about something, then you won't get hit with imposter syndrome. Achieve that balance point on the Dunning Kruger graph and actually know what you're doing. In 1998, a British doctor, Andrew Wakefield, published a paper in the medical journal The Lancet that suggested a possible link between the MMR vaccine and the development of autism, alongside bowel problems. He pointed to what he said was a pattern: children developing normally, receiving the vaccine, and then experiencing a loss of skills. The paper was later retracted. Wakefield was denounced as a fraud and he was struck off the medical register. Now, nearly 30 years later, the mother of one of the children in Wakefield's study has decided to speak out. Paula Aitken's son Colin was known as Child Number Four. In a bombshell interview Paula tells Richie why she believes her son's autism was triggered by antibiotics, not just vaccines and that Andrew Wakefield's study was in fact a front for a sinister agenda, an agenda so dangerous that people have been murdered to ensure it never comes to light. We are away for Christmas, so this is a repeat of a previous episode. In September, President Trump and the U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. held a press conference in which they made extraordinary new claims about autism. They suggested a potential link between the use of Tylenol during pregnancy and the development of autism. They also advocated spacing out childhood vaccinations. The two men's interest in the link between vaccines and autism goes back decades but these claims did not originate in the US. They trace back to the UK in 1998, when disgraced former doctor Andrew Wakefield first published his now-debunked theory linking MMR vaccines to autism cases in children. The science journalist Adam Rutherford explains to the Global Story how the Wakefield vaccine conspiracy became the biggest medical disinformation disaster in recent history, and how these ideas found fertile ground in the Trump administration. This is a long one, because I was too stubborn to make it two parts. I feel it is time we discuss Measles. It is making a bit of a come back in Europe and in the US, but I don't think many people know much about the illness apart from it involving a rash and such. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases that we know of. It is not the same as chicken pox (though that one does such as well), and it can lead to lasting disabilities and death in some cases, especially in young children. Many of you may have seen the recent death of a Texas child because of Measles, for instance. While there are people who get through the virus unscathed, we cannot predict who will end up dying or left with longterm complications (even some that do not show up until years after the original infection). It is estimated that 1 in five people who catch measles will end up hospitalized. We also discuss Mumps and Rubella this episode, because the typical vaccine for Measles also protects agains these two as well. Speaking of vaccines, we just had to go into the ingredients, purpose, and mechanisms of those in general and in the MMR vaccine specifically. Lastly, we need to discuss where the anti-vaccination stuff started and that involves the history of Andrew Wakefield and his fraudulent paper that was later retracted. This is the man who put forth (and still promotes) the reason for fears that have led to a decline in childhood vaccines. He lost his medical license but still makes good money off his supporters.
