Beyond the Gun – Creative Partnerships There's a distinct difference between being cast as an actor in a theatre production and working as a creative collaborator and developing your own work. This session examines how actors can step into producing and move into the developmental life of a project—contributing ideas, shaping the script, and influencing the work as it develops. Actors such as Ngoc Phan, Nicholas Brown, Julia Robertson, Amy Ingram, and Cameron Hurry have expanded their work into producing, writing and directing. This conversation explores how actors can evolve their practice, build a reputation for meaningful creative input, and become initiators and collaborators whose contributions extend beyond performance into the heart of the work itself. Amy is a multi-award-winning actor and theatre-maker based in Brisbane, later this year she will appear in the return season of Pride And Prejudice at QTC and the World Premiere of Suzie Miller's Strong Is The New Pretty touring Nationally. Ngọc is an award-winning actor, director and playwright. Her diverse theatre work includes Vietgone, Boy Swallows Universe and Good Grief (Queensland Theatre), Laurinda (MT), Love Stories (Brisbane Festival/QPAC), Horizon (Playlab Theatre), Medea (Shock Therapy Productions), We're All Gonna Die, Away, A Streetcar Named Desire and Stunt Double (The Farm). Julia Robertson is a multidisciplinary theatre maker, director and actor living and working on Gadigal land. She is the Artistic Director of the award-winning devising group Little Eggs Collective, a recipient of the Ensemble Theatre's Sandra Bates Award for Directing, and a Young Artists Program finalist with Opera Australia. Julia was recently nominated for Best Direction of a Musical at the Sydney Theatre Awards for The Producers (Hayes Theatre Co. / Riverside Parramatta). In 2026, Julia will direct the premiere production of STELLA, The Musical in Melbourne, as well as The Addams Family for Hayes Theatre Co. She will also work as Movement Director on 84 Charing Cross Road for the Ensemble Theatre, and as Assistant Director on Suzie Miller's new work Strong Is the New Pretty for Sydney Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre and Brisbane Festival. Nicholas Brown is a NIDA graduate who has forged an impressive international career across film, television and theatre as an actor, writer, singer, songwriter and leading man with major roles in Bollywood films, Australian drama and as a much-loved ABC Play School presenter. He plays a lead role in upcoming Alex Proyas science fiction musical film R.U.R. As a playwright, Nicholas won the prestigious Nick Enright Prize for Playwriting in the 2024 NSW Premier's Literary Awards for his play Sex Magick which was performed in the 2023 Griffin Theatre season. It was also nominated for a 2025 AWGIE and a 2024 Sydney Theatre Award. Cameron Hurry is a Brisbane based actor and writer. He completed his actor training at the University of Southern Queensland. Cameron's theatre credits include: Pride and Prejudice (Queensland Theatre Company), Unconditional (Playlab Theatre), Three Little Words (Ad Astra), Twelfth Night (4MBS Brisbane Shakespeare Festival), Dance Nation (THAT Production Company), Grand Horizons (PIP Theatre), Frankenstein (Fractal Theatre), Macbeth (JUTE Theatre), Picnic at Hanging Rock (Brisbane Arts Theatre), and Aladdin and the Mysterious Magical Lamp, Jane Eyre, Little Women, Shadowlands (Harvest Rain Theatre Company). His film and television credits include: Spit, Boy Swallows Universe, The Bureau of Magical Things, Young Rock, and Wanted. Building the Scene, Leaning on Exposition, and 99 Years of Theatre Americana - Playwright's Spotlight with Donna Scarantino

Send us Fan MailTwo weeks before the opening of her latest piece in the Bellevue Escapades, Donna Scarantino took the time to come sit in the Playwright's Spotlight. We discuss the origins of the Bellevue series and its evolution over the years, her involvement and eventual takeover of Theatre Americana and how playwrights can submit their work, or how actors can become involved in the theatre company. We delve into her growth as a playwright, having a director change your ending, removing oneself from the performance when in one's own piece, her approach to comedy and what farce looks like on the page, leaning too much on exposition, learning to build the scene, and the use of unnecessary language. We wrap things up with Theatre Americana's expectations for submissions, the concept of a play being only as good as its actors, discipline in writing and the first steps after an idea is hatched, playing with structure, the benefits of table reads, and Donna's refraining to submitting to outside entities. It's a lovely conversation that includes a not-so-well known historic opportunity that playwrights may not be aware of. I hope to hear that many of you decided to submit to Theatre Americana after listening to this episode. She has experience in the performing arts industry in Australia and the UK, as a writer, director, performer, stage manager, and production manager. Hayley is also an established poet, who has been a slam finalist in London and Melbourne, and was recently part of the Melbourne Slamalamadingdong Poetry Team. Playwriting is her love language but overall she loves creative writing and expression in all its forms. In this delightful chat, Hayley takes us back to how her love of writing and theatre first evolved, through porridge rituals in the family kitchen and self-driven classroom plays. We reflect on the stories that stay with us, how storytelling can enrich our lives, and how the political is often personal, and the personal is political. Hayley unpacks some of the journeys and challenges that come with taking a show to a fringe festival, how writing is about connection, and how the stage is a structured space that gives you permission to be loud and to be expressive.

Paul is a charming Brit with a background in writing that makes everything sound so easy. That's not to say we don't discuss obstacles and struggles, especially considering entering playwriting at a late stage in life. In a addition, we discuss his shift from poetry into playwriting and being self-taught, drawing from History and his development of The Four Knights in Knaresborough and the following evolution of his play Warsaw and its struggles. We also breakdown the balance and transformation of different stages of life, making characters sound natural, having control of your work (or lack there of) in the mediums of film and television vs stage, being in a completely different country during the rehearsal process, and whether or not there are any secrets to rewrites. Paul's is an inspirational and motivating story for any one hesitant to take any leap into the realm of creativity. Enjoy!Paul Webb wrote his first play, Four Knights in Knaresborough, at the age of 50. It was produced in London, had a national tour and drew the attention of the film industry. He was subsequently commissioned by Stephen Spielberg, Michael Mann and Ridley Scott, working closely with all three over a number of years. He wrote Selma, the 2014 film about the voting rights campaign in Alabama, led by Dr Martin Luther King. Shortly after, Paul turned once again to the theater. His play Hold On! premiered at the St. Louis Black Rep in January 2024. Paul recently completed Six Easy Steps, an intimate history of the marriage between Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and the defining influence of their confidante, Louis Howe. In our next episode of the fAQ podcast, Tai-Danae Bradley sits down with SandboxAQ's Eneko Axpe to explore the creative and resilient mindset required to navigate and lead in deep tech. Innovation at the edge of physics demands more than technical brilliance; it requires the ability to communicate complex ideas, recover from massive failures, and foster healthy, high-performing teams. Eneko shares his incredible journey from a humble upbringing in Bilbao, Spain, where his mother worked as a cleaner. Thanks to accessible, high-quality public education, he was able to follow his passion and eventually become the first Basque physicist at NASA.Eneko's path is a testament to the power of resilience. He opens up about the terrifying (and now hilarious) story of his very first PhD experiment, where a broken glass vial led to the accidental creation of a radioactive living cell culture—resulting in an eight-hour lockdown with his PI. He explains how he bounced back from that disaster, adopting a philosophy from an early mentor to "stand up when you fall" and to treat life's massive obstacles like tsunamis to be surfed. By eventually swapping the glass for metal, his experiment ultimately led to a publication in Nature Physics and a spot at Oxford University. We also explore his approach to leadership, deeply influenced by a mentor at Stanford who taught him that a leader's true priorities are ensuring their team is growing and happy. Finally, Eneko illustrates that the best deep tech innovators are often polymaths. He walks us through his 15 years in science radio, writing a hit theater play called "Quantum Adventures" that explains quantum physics to kids using Schrödinger's cat, and his mind-blowing invention of "electro cooking," which uses electrical resistance to cook a kilo of meat in just eight seconds.LinksDelicioso Algoritmo by Eneko Axpe: https://www.amazon.com/Delicioso-algoritmo-Eneko-Axpe/dp/8408297678/ About this podcastThis podcast is hosted by Tai-Danae Bradley and features the stories of amazing people working in science and technology at SandboxAQ and beyond. Send us Fan MailOlivia Dufault took time to sit under the Playwright's Spotlight before the opening of her latest play - "For Want of a Horse." In this discussion, we unpack her introduction and journey into playwriting, learning from past influencers, learning through evolution and gaining focus yet learning from lack of collaboration. We explore her path of starting new work, entering the flow state and giving characters what they want, her impetus of learning structure and the lessons of overwriting, writing in "crazy spaces" and achieving the suspension of disbelief. We delve into the influence and tapping into Greek tragedies, the concept of "Tends to Be" structures vs unconventional approaches, motivation through music as well as keeping outlandish characters real. We wrap things up sharing her experience finding fellowship opportunities and the benefits of them being in-person, the time for being comfortable to share, creating your own group, and building your own community. These are only a few topics amongst others that playwrights of all levels will benefit from. Enjoy! For Want of a Horse opens at the Echo Theater Company in Atwater Village in Los Angeles on April 18 thru May 24. For tickets, visit - https://echotheatercompany.ludus.com/index.phpOlivia Dufault is a playwright, screenwriter and comic book writer. Her plays include Year of the Rooster and The Tomb of King Tot, both named “Critic's Pick” by The New York Times, and The Messenger. Her plays have been performed at the Ensemble Studio Theatre/Youngblood, the Flea Theatre, the Marin Theatre, the 52nd Street Project, the Theater for the New City, UpStart Theater, and the Stray Dog Theater, among others. In addition to the Venturous Playwrights Fellowship, she is the recipient of a Playwrights of New York Fellowship, a Sloan Commission, the David Colicchio Emerging Playwright Award, the Lipkin Playwriting Award, and three Harle Adair Damann Playwriting Awards. To watch the video format of this episode, click - https://youtu.be/iI_QnnUkB0sLinks to sites and resources mentioned in this episode - The Pony Playwriting Contest - https://www.equusippe.comYoungblood Theatre - https://www.ensemblestudiotheatre.org/youngbloodEcho Theater Company - https://www.echotheatercompany.comSocials for Olivia Dufault -IG - @livdufaultWebsites and socials for James Elden, Punk Monkey Productions and Playwright's SpotlightPunk Monkey Productions - www.punkmonkeyproductions.comPLAY Noir -www.playnoir.comPLAY Noir Anthology –www.punkmonkeyproductions.com/contact.htmlJames Elden -Twitter - @jameseldensauerIG - @alakardrakeFB - fb.com/jameseldensauerPunk Monkey Productions and PLAY Noir - Twitter - @punkmonkeyprods                  - @playnoirla IG - @punkmonkeyprods       - @playnoir_la FB - fb.com/playnoir        - fb.com/punkmonkeyproductionsPlaywright's Spotlight -Twitter - @wrightlightpod IG - @playwrights_spotlightPlaywriting services through Los Angeles Collegiate Playwrights Festivalwww.losangelescollegiateplaywrightsfestival.com/services.htmlSupport the show

Send a textI stumbled upon Patrick Gabridge on the World Wide Web, and he was kind enough to come on to the Playwright's Spotlight after reaching out to him. If there was a playwright who has been in the spotlight who might have a pathway to success, it would be Patrick Gabridge. With a non-traditional approach to writing, Patrick focuses on site-specific plays that are staged in non-traditional stages. Before we delve into this, we speak about marketing and his networking group - Playwright Submission Binge - and how the market has dwindled and changed over the years and how it has affected non-equity theatre. We discuss his development of Plays in Places and its historical accuracy and use of creative license, how it's opened doors to success, the Secret Sauce, and pitching to non-traditional venues. We also breakdown approaching Youth Plays as an older playwright, writing competition plays, what constitutes high drama and whether or not there is a formula. We wrap things up with achieving exposition in a 10-minute play, experiencing poor productions of one's work, advice for finding/developing a writers group, and networking with playwrights. This is a fascinating conversation that should present any playwright with phenomenal opportunities. I'd love to how things transpire if anyone listening takes this path. Enjoy!Patrick Gabridge is a playwright whose work includes Blood on the Snow, Chore Monkeys, Lab Rats, Distant Neighbors, Fire on Earth, Flight, Constant State of Panic, Pieces of Whitey, Blinders, and Reading the Mind of God, which have been staged in theaters across the country. His plays can found in  Playscripts, Brooklyn Publishers, Heuer, Smith & Kraus and various“Best of” anthologies. He assisted is creating Boston's Rhombus Playwrights writers' group, the Chameleon Stage theatre company in Denver, the Bare Bones Theatre company in New York, the publication Market InSight… for Playwrights, and the on-line Playwrights' Submission Binge. He's also a member of the Dramatists Guild,  StageSource, and a board member of the Theatre Community Benevolent Fund.  In 2013, he co-founded the New England New Play Alliance and still serves as its coordinator. To view the video format of this episode, visit the link below - https://youtu.be/wkpI3jR_Or0Links to sites and resources mentioned in this episode -Playwright Marketing Binge - https://groups.io/g/playwrightbingeSeven Devils New Play Foundry - https://www.sevendevils.orgMid America Theatre Conference - https://matc.usThe O'Neill - https://www.theoneill.orgPlays in Place - http://playsinplace.comBrooklyn Publishers - https://www.brookpub.comHeuer Publishing - https://www.hitplays.comSocials for Patrick Gabridge and Plays in Place - FB - https://www.facebook.com/patrickgabridgeIG/Threads - @patrickgabridge YouTube -  ⁨@pgabridge⁩  FB - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61558727695681IG/Threads - @plays_in_placeWebsites and socials for James Elden, Punk Monkey Productions and Playwright's SpotlightPunk Monkey Productions - www.punkmonkeyproductions.comPLAY Noir -www.playnoir.comPLAY Noir Anthology –www.punkmonkeyproductions.com/contact.htmlJames Elden -Twitter - @jameseldensauerIG - @alakardrakeFB - fb.com/jameseldensauerPunk Monkey Productions and PLAY Noir - Twitter - @punkmonkeyprods                  - @playnoirla IG - @punkmonkeyprods       - @playnoir_la FB - fb.com/playnoir        - fb.com/punkmonkeyproductionsPlaywright's SpoSupport the show

In this episode, I sit down with renowned playwright and theatre innovator Stan Lai for a rich conversation about his extraordinary journey in theatre, his philosophy on creativity, and the cultural forces that shape artistic expression. We explore how his experiences shaped his voice as a playwright and director, and how improvisation became a breakthrough in his early work.Stan shares insights from his book CreativitRy, expanding on his ideas about making space for inspiration by clearing mental clutter and using constraints as catalysts for creativity. He walks me through his Wisdom-Method triangle, a practical framework for unlocking creative energy, and we discuss the habits required to de-label ourselves and unlearn limiting beliefs like perfectionism. Finally, we explore the story behind the Wuzhen Theatre Festival and its role in fostering global cultural connections, nurturing new talent, and building artistic community. Throughout our conversation, we reflect on how Chinese culture informs universal themes in playwriting and how festivals and cultural exchange programs help shape the future of theatre.BioStan Lai has been called ‘the major contemporary Asian playwright of his time, perhaps of all time' (Robert Brustein), ‘the best Chinese-language playwright and director in the world' (BBC), and ‘Asia's top theatre director' (Asiaweek). Send us a textPlaywright, pianist, and composer along with her collaborator Raymond O. Caldwell who is a director, producer, and artistic director of The Fountain Theatre in Los Angeles, CA, stopped by the studio to discuss their latest project - Poetry for the People: The June Jordan Experience. While our conversation did have a few technical setbacks, we were able to get back on track about their budding relationship, Adrienne's personal and collaborative relationship with June, building the team that would encapsulate the life and poetry of June as well as her importance to society and her concept of the "rings of connection." We unpack the process of combining conflicting visions in collaboration, the importance of trust and sharing a vision, and centering on the work. We also discuss introducing new elements durning the last few weeks of rehearsal, the evolution of different iterations, surprise revelations, unconventional storytelling, creating a through line from unconnected sources, and the secret to smooth transitions. It's wonderful back-and-forth that becomes a little silly at the end, but the whole conversation is insightful and entertaining. Enjoy! For tickets to Poetry for the People at the Fountain Theatre in Los Angeles from January 27th through March 29th, visit - https://www.fountaintheatre.com/events/poetry-for-the-peopleAdrienne Torf, is a playwright, pianist, and composer. It is slated to run at the Fountain Theatre in Los Angeles in early 2026.Also set for production in 2026 is For Women Serving Time, an extended poem/opera for which she composed the score, with text by Fatemeh Keshavarz, produced by IN Series Opera in Washington, DC. Caldwell has written and adapted new works for Theater Alliance and the Kennedy Center, including Look Both Ways: A Tale Told in Ten Blocks from the book by 2024 MacArthur recipient Jason Reynolds. Send us a textAfter an excruciating knee-tweak, Catherine Butterfield streamed into the Playwright's Spotlight being laid up on the couch. Proof that playwrights will go above and beyond, so we were unable to do the originally planned in-person interview. In this episode, we breakdown layering stories in the same location throughout different eras, when it's time to share and direct one's work, and "stumbling" upon commissions and opportunities. We also delve into New York being a musical theatre bastion, the effect of AI on creativity, receiving, achieving, and the benefits of awards, and seeking out competitions. We dive into major city and smaller markets, the pros and cons of Equity Theatre, never locking decisions down, multiple drafts and plot twists, and adjusting for casting. If there are layers in playwriting, there are definitely layers to this interview. Enjoy!Catherine Butterfield is a playwright, screenwriter, and director. Her play Joined at the Head won the George E. Oppenheimer/New York Newsday Award for outstanding play by a first-time playwright. She has also received the Kennedy Center-American Express award for outstanding promise as a playwright; the Kaufman & Hart Award for best new American comedy for her play The Sleeper; and the Davie Award for best new play in regional theater for Life in the Trees.  Her play Top of the World was a semi-finalist in the 2018 Eugene O'Neill playwriting competition and has been optioned for production in New York. Other plays include Electra, Revisited, include Life Expectancy, It Has to Be You, The Sleeper, Where the Truth Lies, Snowing at Delphi and Life in the Trees published by Dramatists Play Service, Samuel French and Playscripts, Inc.Her play Brownstone opens January 24th and runs through February 28th at the Atwater Village Theater in Los Angeles, CA. Send us a textIn this episode, musical theatre playwright Isaac Laskin stopped by Playwright's Spotlight to talk about the the development and evolution of his hit L.A. musical Hey, Morgan. He dispels the rumor of being challenged to write a musical about a dear friend, how the origination started as individual standalone songs about his roommate and how it later evolved into a musical. We unpack its growth from a short-run, small-theater production into a bigger, longer running show which included a copy of the soundtrack for the audience to leave with. We discuss the logistics of the cast album, writing multilayered/tracked songs, comedy in the current climate, pushing the envelope and crossing the line, and putting it out into the public for outside production. It's an inspiring conversation, where even the most simple concepts and turn into much more ambitious projects.
