Welcome to another episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, featuring the legendary Ray Wang. In this memorable conversation, Christopher and Ray dive deep into the latest developments shaping the world of technology, business, and careers. From dissecting recent tech earnings from giants like Apple, Meta, Tesla and Microsoft to sharing insights from Davos and contemplating the implications of AI for the future of work and entrepreneurship. This episode delivers high-caliber analysis and practical takeaways for anyone navigating today’s rapidly evolving landscape. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Lessons from Davos and the New Economic Realities Returning from a bustling Davos, Ray Wang shares his observations on how global leaders and executives are tackling an era defined by uncertainty, rapid technology adoption and a relentless pursuit of efficiency. One of Ray's core takeaways is the prevailing theme of “margin compression,” where even the world's largest corporations are working harder than ever just to achieve modest growth. Companies are now measured by their ability to scale exponentially, as illustrated by India's ISRO launching rockets at a fraction of NASA's cost, fundamentally altering competitive dynamics across industries. Ray explains that the rise of AI turbocharges this transformation by opening up “infinite possibilities.” Companies no longer just compete on physical or financial assets, but on their ability to harness vast data resources, quickly innovate and make sharp strategic choices about what problems to solve—and, crucially, what not to do. Privacy challenges, especially for companies like Apple, arise in this new era, making it difficult to deliver world-class AI solutions while maintaining rigorous data protection standards. Both Christopher and Ray emphasize that managing growth, inflation and investment are more complex than ever, with the U.S. outpacing much of the world in GDP growth, yet operating in a global environment rife with policy and market uncertainties. AI, Tech Earnings, and the Rise of the New IPO Era The conversation pivots to the massive investment and exuberance surrounding generative AI and tech infrastructure. Ray points out that while there are fears about overbuilding capacity or creating a circular funding loop among AI companies, there is still significant real opportunity. The current phase has seen enormous capital pour into building data centers and scalable AI platforms. Landmark IPOs from OpenAI, Databricks and others are expected to reshape the tech landscape. Despite market fluctuations and some outsized reactions to earnings, the fundamentals for big tech remain robust. Companies like Apple have solidified their status as luxury brands, even as others like Tesla and Meta retool and pivot to sustain long-term relevance and unlock new revenue streams such as robotics and energy. At the structural level, venture capital itself is in flux. Many VC firms have become indistinguishable from private equity, constrained both by too much and too little available capital relative to the demands of today's tech startups. The gap between small angel, family office, or solo GP funds and the mega funds has widened so much that the “middle” has all but disappeared. It is now entirely possible for one-person companies, through the leverage of AI and autonomous agents, to achieve scale and revenues previously thought impossible. Ray predicts it is likely we will see a single founder build a billion-dollar annual revenue company within the next five years, echoing the democratization and disruption that generative AI promises. Building Legendary Companies and Careers in the Age of AI Christopher and Ray close their discussion by exploring what all these rapid changes mean for leaders and individuals. For CEOs and entrepreneurs, the formula for thriving is clear but audacious. Leaders must design their companies to be fully autonomous and authentic, constantly reinventing their business as if they were attempting to disrupt themselves. Boards need to be stacked with people who grasp the new fundamentals: margin compression, exponential scale, and infinite possibilities brought by AI. Combining domain expertise with technical agility is more critical than ever, as the fusion of seasoned judgment and lightning-fast, innovative execution is where breakthroughs occur. On a personal level, Ray stresses that knowledge and execution are becoming commodities, rapidly automated by advances in AI. To stay relevant, individuals must become “macro analysts,” adept at synthesizing big ideas and patterns, deeply immersed in experimenting with new technologies and surrounded by others who are passionate about their own crafts. The traditional playbooks for career building, education, and even family strategies are being rewritten in real-time. The U.S. faces global competition for talent and innovation, and entrepreneurial energy is no longer confined to Silicon Valley or New York. The nature of immigration, investment and even educational choices must be reconsidered for new generations. In a world where the location and structure of opportunity are shifting, only those who embrace change, foster diverse collaborations and pursue purpose will continue to define the next era of legendary achievement. As both Christopher and Ray reflect, living and leading like Rob Burgess—embracing boldness, curiosity and authenticity—remains the path to being truly legendary in this rapidly changing world. It's over! It's all over! Forever! What am I talking about? The 2025 MotoGP-season, of course. Layed to rest in Spain last week, gone but not forgotten, etc. We all had fun, didn't we? Okay, with that out of the way...it's on to the 2026 season! If you are part of our Patreon, you will already have heard Peter talk about the Valencia test in our special crossover episode. But there is a lot more to be said, and it's high time we did so. So, what did we see the teams testing in Spain last week? First of all: lot's of aero. There's no getting around it, but there's definitely different ways of implementing it. And let's just say that not every type is equally enjoyable for any particular rider. But it's not all just hot (and cold!) air. We've got mass dampeners, rigorous rider training regimens, Ducati's naming schemes and much, much more. In this episode, Tony and Austin dive into a wide-ranging, no-holds-barred conversation that blends sharp economic analysis with cultural commentary. They break down the emerging trend of 'subscription housing' and what it means for homeownership in America, dissect the real-world impact of tariffs on consumers and manufacturing, and push back against common political narratives from both sides. The duo also explore generational divides (from Boomer work ethic to Zoomer media habits), challenge persistent cultural stereotypes, and discuss why strong local communities remain the antidote to isolation and declining mental health. Along the way, they touch on the explosion of independent podcasting, the shifting role of formal education, and how everyday people are taking control of the information they consume in an era of legacy-media distrust. Raw, insightful, and packed with tangents that actually matter.linktree.com/thegreatgirthpodcast

After celebrating ten years of Everybody Wants, we're diving back to the very beginning. Forget "Could Have Been Me"; this week on The Struts Life, Luke Spiller reveals the true origin story of the band, hidden within the anthem that started it all: "Where Did She Go." Luke shares the wild tale of how a drunken, teenage walk home in Torquay birthed the melody that became the band's essential DNA, ultimately leading to the first record deal. Beyond the deep cuts and formative rock history, Luke gives an exclusive, detailed look at the creative direction for the new Struts album—a commitment to pure, cohesive, "glam stomping" sing-alongs inspired by the band's earliest tracks. Plus, hear the latest on Luke's mostly sold-out solo acoustic tour and find out what really went down when The Struts recently celebrated their heroes, Def Leppard, at Joe Elliott's Hollywood star reveal. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2022 conversation with Roland Orzabal. ABOUT ROLAND ORZABAL AND TEARS FOR FEARS:Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith formed Tears for Fears in Bath, England, in 1981 and have gone on to sell 30 million albums worldwide. Their major breakthrough in the UK came in 1982 with the Top 5 single “Mad World” and the subsequent platinum-selling album The Hurting. They gained major steam in the US with their sophomore album Songs From the Big Chair, which included the hit singles “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Shout,” and “Head Over Heels.” Featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Songs From the Big Chair reached #1 and was certified five times Platinum by the RIAA. Tears for Fears' follow-up single “Sowing the Seeds of Love” was another massive hit, but Curt departed the group not long after. Following a couple of albums with Orzabal at the helm, the duo reunited for the Everybody Loves a Happy Ending album in 2004. Now, after a long wait of 17 years, Roland and Curt have just released their seventh studio album The Tipping Point, and are embarking on a major tour. Even as they bring us new music, their legacy is well-established as one of the most unique and influential British groups to emerge in the last few decades. Their songs have been covered or sampled by Gary Jules, Adam Lambert, Lorde, Kanye West, Drake, and many others. And, in 2021, the band was honored with the Outstanding Song Collection honor at the Ivor Novello Awards in London. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. “You get a bunch of competitors together, and you're addicted to winning.” We watched “Everybody Wants Some!!” Directed by Richard Linklater, and we were definitely born in the wrong era. This movie is a vibe, and that vibe is athletic college dudes in short shorts, sleeveless muscle shirts, and mustaches— so many mustaches. To be real, the look is very reminiscent of a summer beer bust at your local gay bar, but that may not be what director Linklater was going for. When we say “vibe,” this movie really is one— set in 1980, over the couple of days before class, stars at an unnamed Texas University. We follow the studly baseball team as they break each other's balls, cruise for ladies, and show off their baseball skills. The slice of life gives us a very real look at straight male friendship— constant smack talk, ridiculous one-upmanship, but also an ease of camaraderie when meeting new members of the group. The plot takes its time to unfold, and the movie may not pass the Bechtel Test, but the guys are fun to watch, and it really does feel like a spiritual sequel to Linklater's beloved “Dazed and Confused.” Thank you for listening, and don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Bluesky: @MTMUGPod.bsky.social Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

Step back into 2015 with us as The Struts relive the summer when Everybody Wants first hit U.S. shores. In this nostalgic episode, Adam and Luke crack open their old Spotify playlists, revealing a mix as eclectic as Paolo Nutini, Johnny Cash, Queen, and Arctic Monkeys. They revisit the TV obsessions of the time—Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and the cultural frenzy around Making a Murderer—while laughing at the questionable movies that defined that year (yes, even 50 Shades of Grey). Most importantly, they share their raw first impressions of America: the chaos of Hollywood versus the dream of late-night TV, tea parties with fans in San Diego, and the wide-eyed thrill of playing their first House of Blues shows. It's a time capsule full of humor, honesty, and the fire that fueled a band on the rise. Tune in and see just how much of your own 2015 memories align with theirs. Learn more about your ad choices. This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes head back to 1980 with "Everybody Wants Some!!", Richard Linklater's laid-back, jock-fueled follow-up (spiritually, at least) to "Dazed and Confused".Mike Field, a longtime Linklater fan, is all in on the film's nostalgic energy, naturalistic dialogue, and character-driven charm. Mike Butler? Not so much. While he appreciates the strong direction and rising-star performances from stars such as Glen Powell, Tyler Hoechlin, and Wyatt Russell, the movie's hyper-specific focus on male bonding and college baseball culture doesn't fully land.Still, there's no denying the talent on display or Linklater's knack for capturing the rhythm of a time and place. Is "Everybody Wants Some!!" a dugout classic, or just a foul ball that looks like a homerun? What's your favorite Linklater film? Let us know in the comments below!

To celebrate 10 years of Everybody Wants, we're doing something a little different on this episode of The Struts Life. Instead of our usual chat, we had you, the Strutters, send in your burning questions via voicemail, and let's just say you did not disappoint! Join Luke Spiller, Adam Slack, Gethin Davies, and Jed Elliott as they pull back the curtain on one of the most pivotal times in the band's career. We dive deep into the real stories behind the songwriting, the intense pressure from the record label to change their entire image (picture Luke with short, black hair and Nike trainers), and the surprising truth about their smash hit "Could Have Been Me" – a song they didn't even think was that special at first. Hear the band reveal which songs almost didn't make the cut, what they really think of that dated lyric in "She Makes Me Feel Like," and get some massive spoilers for the upcoming 10th Anniversary Tour setlist. Everybody wants to win. They want to get ahead and get a leg up. But they have to do the work. The year was 2010 and the Dodd Frank Act was passed and my felonious ass could not longer get a job. I knew how to wash cars. I knew how to deal drugs. I knew how to do loans, but I could no longer do it. I spent the best part of a year working my ass off to learn everything I could. If you want to do something more, you gotta be willing to do the work. Get immersed in whatever it is you want in your life. Crack a book. Watch a video. Implement what you learned. Tears for Fears is a duo formed in 1981 in Bath, England by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. They've sold over 30 million albums, starting with their first, The Hurting, which went to number one in the UK. But it was their second album, Songs from the Big Chair, that made them international stars. It came out in 1985, and had huge singles like “Shout” and "Head Over Heels.” But their biggest hit is “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” It won Best Single at the BRIT Awards in 1986, and it's been streamed over 2 billion times. So I talked to the two of them about how they, along with their producer Chris Hughes and keyboard player Ian Stanley, made a song that would help define the sound of the 80s.For more, visit songexploder.net/tears-for-fears.
Some weeks, it just feels like everything is up in the air all at the same time. Nilay and David are joined by The Verge's Jake Kastrenakes to talk about all the unrest, starting with the ever-changing tariff rules that are making gadgets hard to price, hard to find, and hard to bet on going forward. (Maybe that's why it seems everyone on Earth tried to pre-order a Switch 2 this week.) After that, the hosts catch up on the Meta and Google antitrust trials happening this week, and try to figure out who might be interested in the internet's most popular browser. Finally, in the lightning round, we talk Brendan Carr (who is a dummy), the wood-backed Motorola Razr Ultra, and the 20th anniversary of YouTube.
