Te Tai Tokerau only just reached the 90 percent first doses target last week. The nurse has noticed growing number of anti-vax signs outside properties and told RNZ reporter Sam Olley she's had enough. The nurse says the protests at Parliament highlight why anti-vax billboards should be ousted. The police are not backing the nurse's actions saying it could inflame the situation, and the person doing the spraypainting could also be liable for the damage they've done.

After a wave of protests against vaccines and vaccine mandates in Europe, it is clear that despite very different policies across Europe, anti-vaccination movements that oppose them are remarkably alike. These movements are tightly linked, even though some of their connections are hidden. They amplify one another, and they have  elaborate ways to support their activities financially - from selling books on Amazon to offering legal services to anyone who feels they have been harmed by vaccination. We had discussed this with disinformation researcher Dr Aliaksandr Herasimenka, so we thought we will come back to this interview and highlight his insights that explain the mobilisation around vaccines these days. A researcher at the Computational Propaganda Project of the Oxford Internet Institute, Herasimenka is a co-author of a paper on misinformation distribution on Telegram. The interview was edited for brevity and clarity. You can read the Alliance for Securing Democracy's research on China's propaganda and search engines here. Are 'vaccine hesitancy', 'vaccine skepticism' and 'anti-vaccination sentiment' synonyms? Do people who say they doubt vaccine safety always refuse vaccines? In this episode Eva and Daiva discuss the challenges researchers face when trying to estimate the size of the anti-vaccination movement and the number of its sympathizers. Our interviewees are: Prof. Maya Goldenberg, Dr Jonathan Kennedy, Prof. Jason Reifler, Dr Samantha Vanderslott. We also thank Col. Gintaras Koryzna for providing valuable data. 0:08 – How long will it take to develop a Covid-19 vaccine, and what can the public expect from the human vaccine trials underway right now? Art Reingold is the Division Head of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. 0:34 – There has been an explosion of Covid-19 cases in U.S. meatpacking plants among workers. Tyson, JBS and Smithfield workers have died from the virus. Investigative reporter Leah Douglas (@leahjdouglas) of the nonprofit investigative news outlet Food and Environment Reporting Network has been tracking the spread of Covid-19 in the food system, and says it is likely being massively undercounted, in part because of the reticence of meat companies to disclose the extent of the sickness. Read Douglas's reporting here. 1:08 – A recent study of misinformation in Nature mapped the online spread of pro- and anti-vaccination views. It suggested anti-vaccination social media posters are more successful at posting their content where “undecided” viewers will see it, even though anti-vaccination advocates are a smaller portion of users. We talk with Neil Johnson, professor of physics at George Washington University and lead author of the study.  1:18 – What's the crossover between anti-vaccination and anti-lockdown views at recent protests at state houses across the U.S.? We speak with Devin Burghart (@dburghart), executive director of the Institute for Research & Education on Human Rights, based in Seattle, which examines racist, anti-Semitic, and far right social movements.  1:34 – An appeals court has paved the way for a massive, polluting coal export terminal at the Port of Oakland. We get the latest update from journalist Darwin BondGraham, news editor of Berkeleyside's forthcoming Oakland newsroom.   Photo by Don Barrett The post Covid-19 cases in meatpacking plants are likely undercounted; Anti-vaccination and anti-lockdown views cross-pollinate online; Appeals court paves way for polluting coal terminal at Port of Oakland appeared first on KPFA.

Episode 6 is here! The growing anti-vaccination movement is building momentum by the minute, and regrettably, their primitive beliefs can and have produced real, substantive harm to the rest of the population! As confirmed by the recent slew of long-dormant disease outbreaks, such as the measles in the US, more and more parents are arming themselves with pseudoscience, and disregarding nearly 50 years of medical science, microbiology and epidemiological studies in an effort to combat the potentially harmful side effects "associated" with vaccines. These vexed anti-vaxxers are taking their fight to the frontlines of Facebook and Instagram to recruit even more thickheaded soldiers to advance all of us further into oblivion! To make this matter even more complex, the vegan community is irresponsibly jumping on this dangerous bandwagon because commercial vaccinations do in fact contain several animal-based products. While this is absolutely true, we do need to consider that not suppressing dangerous pathogens through modern medicine can have pandemic like consequences and directly supports reintroducing diseases from the dark ages back into contemporary times. Regrettably, in order to contend this anti-vaxxer drive, forward-thinking vegans, and non-vegans alike, may have to momentarily set aside their dietary agendas and support vaccine use because right here and right now, it is the only reasonable choice we have as a civilization bursting at the seams in population. Agendas aside, we must do what is best for civilization. BUT FEAR NOT plant eaters, plant-based vaccines are now being created and even administered in other parts of the world. The solution is coming. In the case of vaccinations, the one thing that seems to be contagious is the misleading information that is spread by anti-vaccine movements. This has caused such an immense problem that the WHO has called the anti-vaccine movement a major threat to public health Join the mettlesome trio as they examine the current science surrounding vaccinations and investigate the myth surround complications associated with receiving vaccines. Join Dan, Brian, and Mike as they peek behind this curtain of secrecy to arm listeners with more information to live a disease free life. The RIOT grows! Support the RIOT! The elephant in the room... We look at the horrific hate crime in New Zealand. This was a heinous act. What the hell does the Church have to do before they finally leave? Quack Tracts... The Calgary Health Region has set up a "vaccine hesitancy clinic" whose goal is to convince parents on the fence to get their children vaccinated. In the face of a recent measles warning, at least one clinic in Calgary has asked that parents not bring their unvaccinated children. A father of three young boys with a rare genetic disorder which compromises their immune systems makes an appeal to Albertans to vaccinate. Meanwhile, physicians are urging Health Canada to take action against the sale of homeopathic vaccine "alternatives". Eye on Islam... Measles outbreaks are devastating countries across the globe, linked to a massive drop in vaccination rates. The World Health Organisation has raised the alarm and ranked ‘vaccine hesitancy' as one of the top 10 threats to public health everywhere. Washington state has experienced a measles outbreak in the past month. And South Africa is not immune to this. Dr Yogan Pillay, deputy director general at the Department of Health, said that 85 percent of children in South Africa are fully immunised by the age of one year – but the most recent data from the country's Medical Research Council suggests this figure is closer to 70 percent. There are a number of factors that contribute to this with access to rural areas being one, where parents find it difficult to get to clinics and medical practitioners also finding it hard to reach many in the rural areas. Another factor is, of course, the anti-vaccination drives being fuelled by misinformation and bogus studies that have been debunked at proven to be false. But does religious doctrine and sentiments play a role in the anti-vaccination communities? #Vaccination #Measles Religion
